Key Afghan-Pakistan border crossing closed as forces exchange fire: Report

Tata Group's consumer unit is in talks to buy at least 51% of popular Indian snack food maker Haldiram's but is not comfortable with the $10 billion valuation sought, two people briefed on the matter said.

If successfully concluded, a deal would see the Indian conglomerate directly compete with Pepsi and billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail.

Haldiram's, a household name in India, is also talking with private equity firms including Bain Capital about the sale of a 10% stake, they said.

Tata Consumer Products, which owns UK tea company Tetley and has a partnership with Starbucks in India, has baulked at the $10 billion valuation given that Haldiram's annual revenue is around $1.5 billion, the sources said.

Tata Consumer shares surged and closed nearly 4% higher in Mumbai trade after Reuters reported news of the talks.

A third person with direct knowledge of the discussions said Tata wants to buy more than 51% but has told Haldiram's that its "ask is very high."

The potential acquisition represents an exciting opportunity for Tata, the person said, adding: "Tata (Consumer) is seen as a tea company. Haldiram's is huge in the consumer space and has a wide market share."

The sources spoke on condition of anonymity.

A spokesperson for Tata Consumer Products said it "does not comment on market speculation". Haldiram's Chief Executive Krishan Kumar Chutani and Bain declined to comment.

Family-run Haldiram's traces its origins back to a tiny shop founded in 1937 and is well-known for its crispy "bhujia" snack sold for as little as 10 rupees across mom-and-pop stores.

It has almost 13% share of India's $6.2 billion savoury snack market, according to Euromonitor International. Pepsi, famous for its Lay's chips, also has around 13%.

Haldiram's snacks are also sold in overseas markets like Singapore and the United States. The company has around 150 restaurants selling local food, sweets and western cuisine.

Purchasing Haldiram's would significantly expand Tata's consumer products reach.

"If you want to suddenly grow big in size, no one better to provide access than Haldiram's. No other brand attacks packaged food, and food services, with equal panache," said Ankur Bisen, head of consumer and retail at Indian consultancy Technopak.

Tata's consumer unit, which also sells salt, pulses and mineral water, had revenue of $1.7 billion in the past financial year. It is a relatively small part of the Tata Group, whose businesses span autos, aviation and hotels and which had combined revenue last year of some $144 billion.

Haldiram's Chairman Manohar Lal Agrawal last year told CNBC TV18 in an interview the company wanted to attract private equity investors and debut on the stock market in 2-3 years.

Haldiram's - which has multiple registered companies in the country - had revenue of at least $981 million in the financial year ended March 2022, according to regulatory filings. The first two sources, however, said its revenue is now close to $1.5 billion and annual operating profit is around $200 million.

The $10 billion valuation sought by Haldiram's for the deal translates to 6.6 times its annual revenue of $1.5 billion, sources said.

Haldiram's smaller listed rival in India, Bikaji Foods International, has a market capitalisation of $1.5 billion, six times its annual revenue. Shares in Bikaji also rose on Wednesday, climbing around 3 per cent during trade.

China's Premier Li Qiang says need to oppose 'new Cold War'

The first Russian crew to use hypersonic, air-launched Kinzhal missiles during Moscow's military operation in Ukraine has been presented with state awards, the Russian TASS state news agency reported on Monday.

"The Su-34 aircraft used the Kinzhal hypersonic missile during the special military operation," TASS cited an unnamed military source as saying. "The first crew that successfully completed this task was presented with state awards."

Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a "special military operation". Kyiv and its allies say the 18-month-long Russian aggression is an unprovoked war to grab land.

Moscow has said very little so far about the Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missile, but Ukraine's military Kyiv says Russia uses them frequently.

TASS did not say when Russia used the Kinzhal missiles for the first time in Ukraine. The Russian defence ministry said in March that the missiles had been deployed to destroy Ukrainian targets, according to the ministry's Telegram channel.

The Kinzhal is one of six "next generation" weapons unveiled by President Vladimir Putin in a speech in March 2018.

Russia recognises first crew to use hypersonic missile in Ukraine: Report

Lockdowns and strict lockdowns because of coronavirus (COVID-19) have been waning but the fear of coronavirus, which is behind the deadly COVID-19 pandemic is far from gone.

The Covid virus and its various mutations have impacted humans immensely, and a new study has highlighted that the virus also commonly leaps from us to white-tailed deer, and it is probably evolving even more rapidly.

The study titled - Accelerated evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in free-ranging white-tailed deer - was published in Nature Communications. In some regions of the United States, the virus may currently be widespread among white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

Also read: Asian Hornet may have established presence in UK, threatening native bees

The study mentioned that the researchers have detected that SARS-CoV-2 was introduced from humans into white-tailed deer more than 30 times in Ohio, USA from November 2021 to March 2022.

Deer-to-deer transmission thereafter continued for 2–8 months and spread across a vast area, the study said, further adding that the development of SARS-CoV-2 is three times faster in white-tailed deer than it is in humans.

The newly established Bayesian phylogenetic approaches revealed that it is also influenced by different mutational biases and selection pressures.

Given that our animal models using viruses with origins in white-tailed deer did not show any significant phenotypic alterations, the long-term impact of this increased evolutionary pace is yet unknown.

Although SARS-CoV-2 has just recently begun to spread among white-tailed deer populations, any future modifications could have a significant negative impact on both humans and cattle.

As quoted by Science Alert, study co-author Andrew Bowman, who is a veterinary epidemiologist at Ohio State University, "We generally talk about interspecies transmission as a rare event, but this wasn't a huge sampling, and we're able to document 30 spillovers. It seems to be moving between people and animals quite easily."

Bowman said: "And the evidence is growing that humans can get it from deer – which isn't radically surprising. It's probably not a one-way pipeline."

"We expanded across Ohio to see if this was a localized problem – and we find it in lots of places, so it's not just a localized event," Bowman says.

"Some of the thought back then was that maybe it's just in urban deer because they're in closer contact with people," he adds. "But in rural parts of the state, we're finding plenty of positive deer."

Also read: Asian Hornet may have established presence in UK, threatening native bees The study mentioned that the researchers have detected that SARS-CoV-2 was introduced from humans into white-tailed deer more than 30 times in Ohio, USA from November 2021 to March 2022. Also read: Scientists discover mysterious and unique new species of marine bacteria Given that our animal models using viruses with origins in white-tailed deer did not show any significant phenotypic alterations, the long-term impact of this increased evolutionary pace is yet unknown. It seems to be moving between people and animals quite easily." Watch: HPV: The STI that impacts 1 in 3 men worldwide × Bowman said: "And the evidence is growing that humans can get it from deer – which isn't radically surprising. It's probably not a one-way pipeline." "We expanded across Ohio to see if this was a localized problem – and we find it in lots of places, so it's not just a localized event," Bowman says. "Some of the thought back then was that maybe it's just in urban deer because they're in closer contact with people," he adds. "But in rural parts of the state, we're finding plenty of positive deer." WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. COVID-19 in animals: SARS-CoV-2 evolving rapidly in free-ranging white-tailed deer

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet" — This line from Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare illustrates the point that names are not important, or maybe they are.

There is a buzz over India's possible change of name to 'Bharat' is raging, with several people debating what would be the impact. All of this started on Tuesday (September 5) after Indian President Droupadi Murmu referred to herself as the "President of Bharat" in a dinner invitation to G20 leaders, instead of "President of India".

A few hours later, another document circulated that referred to Narendra Modi as the 'Prime Minister of Bharat'. 'Prime Minister of Bharat' is used in a message regarding the Prime Minister's trips to Indonesia on September 6 and September 7 for the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Spokesperson Sambit Patra posted the invite on X, previously known as Twitter. The invite led to criticisms by the opposition party.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh wrote: "Look at how confused the Modi government is! The Prime Minister of Bharat at the 20th ASEAN-India summit. All this drama just because the Opposition got together and called itself INDIA."

Another Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that he hopes the government would not be "so foolish as to completely dispense with 'India', which has incalculable brand value built up over centuries".

BJP president JP Nadda responded to the comments, he said: "Why does the Congress has objection to every subject related to the honour and pride of the country? Why do those who do political tours in the name of Bharat Jodo hate the slogan of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'?"

What's the origin of Bharat?

Is the government really planning to change the name? If yes, what do we know about its origin?

In Indian languages and ancient literature, India is also known by the names Bharat, Bharata, and Hindustan. In normal everyday discourse, both the general population and the governments use these names interchangeably, but high offices in the country have typically stuck to titles such as President of India, Prime Minister of India and Chief Justice of India while communicating in English, especially during and after the colonial regime.

But the Modi-led government is on a path of changing colonial history and imperialist impositions. The plan included changing the names of streets, and museums, also inaugurating the country's new parliament building in New Delhi, as the old one was built almost a century ago during the British colonial era.

The same drive might push the government to adopt the name Bharat, which is a short form of Bharatvarsha, 'the land of the descendants of the Bharatas'. It's not a change of name, since the government has already been using both 'Bharat' and 'India', and it may probably be an attempt to go back to how it was in ancient times.

In history books, 'Bharata' is commonly related to King Bharata, the son of Dushyant and Shakuntala. Bharata, who became the Chakravarti, was a member of the Chandravamsha dynasty. He is regarded to be the ancestor of the Pandavas, the Kauravas, Brihadhratha, and Jarasandha.

In the Vishnu Purana, there is a geographical description of Bharat. It says, "Uttaram yat samudrasya, Himadreschaiva dakshinam, varsham tad Bharatam nama Bharati yatra santatih". It means that Bharatam, or Bharat is the country that lies to the north of the ocean and to the south of the snowy mountains. Some Hindu texts also referred to Bharatvarsha as part of Jambudweepa.

In the latest ebook by Sadhguru, "Bha-ra-ta: The Rhythm of a Nation", he explores the science behind Bharat, India's original name. In one of the interviews regarding his book, when he was asked why "Bharat" matters, Sadhguru elaborated, "Bharat comes from bha – ra – ta. Bhava means sensation. Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching are different types of sensations. Your whole experience of life is sensory right now. Bha means sensation, out of which emotion arises. Ra means raga or the tune. The tune is not yours – existence has already set it. Now you have to find the rhythm, which is the tala. If you find the right rhythm, you are a fantastic human being. If you miss the rhythm, you get crushed by the process of life."

What does the Constitution say?

Article 1 of the Indian constitution starts with "India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States". The Article 1 reads:

India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States.
The States and the territories thereof shall be as specified in the First Schedule
The territory of India shall comprise —
(a) the territories of the States;
(b) the Union territories specified

Bharat is another official name of India, and though there is a surging debate over name change, at most one of the two names may be dropped though the government has not given any such indication. But whether to change the name officially, or to drop one, the government will need to make an amendment to Article 1 of the Indian Constitution which names the country.

Explained | Origin of the name 'Bharat' - India's past, present and future

A new species of marine bacteria that reproduces through a unique budding process and releases viruses to facilitate nitrogen metabolism has been discovered by researchers. A team in China used silt from a cold seep, a particular puddle of nutrient-rich liquid, and dirt from the deep ocean floor to grow the bacteria in a lab.

The research titled — "Physiological and metabolic insights into the first cultured anaerobic representative of deep-sea Planctomycetes bacteria" — has been published in eLife.

It said that researchers have successfully cultured a novel strain of Planctomycetes (strain ZRK32) by using an enriched medium supplemented with rifampicin and different sources of nitrogen.

The research team said that genomic, physiological, and phylogenetic analysis indicate that strain ZRK32 is a novel species, which we propose to be named: Poriferisphaera heterotrophicis. It is a member of a phylum of bacteria that has not received much attention, despite the fact that it can be found in lakes and soils all over the world and is essential for the recycling of carbon and nitrogen.

As quoted by media outlets, microbiologist and lead author Rikuan Zheng from the Chinese Academy of Sciences says, "Most Planctomycetes bacteria have been isolated using growth media that are nutritionally poor."

"So we wanted to see if using a nutrient-rich medium would make it possible to culture and further characterize members of this poorly understood family," Rikuan added.

Dozens of girls were sent back home by French schools for refusing to remove their abayas, an over-garment from the shoulders to the feet worn mostly by Muslim women. This happened on the first day of the school year as a new regulation on uniforms was implimeted. Last month, the French administration banned children from wearing the abaya in state-run schools - a decision that garnered applause as well as criticism, with a government spokesman saying that wearing abaya dresses is a "political attack". Education minister Gabriel Attal told the BFM broadcaster on Tuesday (September 5) that nearly 300 girls showed up Monday morning (Sep 4) wearing an abaya, defying a ban on the Muslim dress. Attal said the girls refused entry were given a letter addressed to their families saying that "secularism is not a constraint, it is a liberty". The minister said that if they showed up at school again wearing the dress, there would be a "new dialogue". An organisation that represents Muslims has requested an injunction against the prohibition on the abaya and the qamis, its male equivalent clothing, with the State Council. Later on Tuesday, the motion from Action for the Rights of Muslims (ADM) will be reviewed. The European nation has enforced a strict ban on religious signs in state schools since 19th-century laws removed any traditional Catholic influence from public education, but it, to some extent, struggled to update guidelines for the Muslim minority. In 2004, France banned headscarves in schools, which was followed by thousands of people, many of them women wearing headscarves, marching on the street to protest the law banning Islamic coverings and other religious apparel in public schools. The polls stated that a substantial majority of French citizens supported the prohibition.
