Ahead of the anniversary of the US Capitol riot, US President Joe Biden said on Sunday (Jan 5) that the events of January 6, 2021, should not be forgotten or &ldquo;rewritten&rdquo;.
Biden took a jab at the President-elect, saying that what Trump did was a threat to democracy.
This comes a day before Trump&rsquo;s second term in office is set to be certified by the US Congress.

<h2>&lsquo;Threat to democracy&rsquo;: What happened at the Capitol in 2021?</h2>
Following Biden&rsquo;s victory in the 2020 elections, Trump, who was president at the time, called for Congress and the vice president to block the Democrat's certification.&nbsp;
He falsely alleged that widespread election fraud had led to his defeat.
On the election certification day, which falls on 6 January as per law, Trump supporters rallied outside the White House before attacking the Capitol building.
Biden&rsquo;s certification was then forced to be delayed until the next morning.
&ldquo;I think what he did was a genuine threat to democracy," Biden said, adding, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m hopeful that we&rsquo;re beyond it.&rdquo;
&ldquo;I think it should not be rewritten, I don't think it should be forgotten,&rdquo; he said during the press conference.

Biden also highlighted his efforts to ensure a &ldquo;smooth transition&rdquo; of power.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve got to get back to basic, normal transfer of power,&rdquo; he said.
Biden often referred to Trump as a threat to democracy during the 2024 presidential race, when he was running as the Democratic presidential nominee against Republican Trump before quitting the race. He had to drop out of the elections, paving the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to challenge Trump unsuccessfully.
Unlike in the last elections four years ago, Biden accepted Trump&rsquo;s win in the 2024 presidential elections and invited him to the White House for a sit-down as a symbol of peaceful power transfer.

In the address, he said, "On January 10, by the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people, I must assume the role of commander-in-chief."&nbsp;
The 75-year-old is the opposition leader against the incumbent Nicholas Maduro and claims that the election results were rigged against the will of Venezuelan voters.
January 10 is a crucial date in Venezuelan election as the president-elect will be sworn in as the leader of the country for the next six years.&nbsp;

South Korean investigators are racing against time to arrest suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol before the arrest warrant expires at the end of the day on Monday (Jan 6). Just a day before the arrest warrant was set to expire, the embattled leader defied it and stayed holed up in his residence.
<h2>Warrant expiry looms</h2>
The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) has announced plans to seek an extension to the warrant, which typically lasts seven days.

Deputy Director Lee Jae-seung told reporters: &ldquo;The validity of the warrant expires today. We plan to request an extension from the court today, which requires stating the reasons for exceeding the standard seven-day period.&rdquo;
Jae-seung also revealed that they are seeking the police's help to detain Yoon because of the difficulties they have faced in arresting him, and said that they would consult the police on the timing of the warrant extension.

Yoon, who faces several charges linked to a bungled martial law decree last month, could face prison or even the death penalty if convicted. Despite this, he has refused questioning three times and last week even thwarted an arrest attempt with the aid of hundreds of security guards.&nbsp;
<h2>Protests intensify &nbsp;</h2>
Amid escalating tensions, both pro- and anti-Yoon demonstrators have gathered outside the presidential residence, braving freezing conditions.
Supporters pledged to shield Yoon from detention, with protest organiser Kim Soo-yong vowing, &ldquo;The Presidential Security Service will protect the President, and we will protect the Presidential Security Service till midnight.&rdquo;

Yoon's legal team has called the warrant &ldquo;unlawful,&rdquo; and &ldquo;illegal,&rdquo; and has vowed further legal challenges against it.
Adding to the tension, South Korea's Constitutional Court is set to begin Yoon's impeachment trial on January 14, a process that will proceed with or without his presence.
The court has up to 180 days to decide whether to formally dismiss or reinstate Yoon. &nbsp;

The head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, Andriy Kovalenko, said on Telegram that defence forces were "working" in the area, without elaborating.
"In the Kursk region, the Russians are very worried because they were attacked from several directions, and it was a surprise for them," he said.
Kyiv seized dozens of villages in the Kursk region shortly after its incursion started on August 6, 2024, but its advances stalled after Moscow rushed reinforcements to the area, including thousands of troops from its ally North Korea.
A Ukrainian army source told AFP last November that Kyiv still controlled 800 square kilometres (around 300 square miles) of the Russian border region, down from previous claims it controlled almost 1,400 square kilometres.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last year the Kursk operation has boosted Kyiv's "exchange fund" -- its negotiating position on swapping prisoners of war -- and diverted tens of thousands of Russian troops away from the eastern front.

In case there's any tie, then the House will vote again to break it, with each delegation representing the electoral college getting one vote. But such a tie hasn't happened in a couple of centuries.
The meeting is presided over by Harris in her role as president of the Senate.
She will eventually declare the winner, who this time happens to be the same person she fought vehemently on the campaign trail.
