Militants have killed at least 40 farmers in Nigeria's northeastern Borno state in the latest violence to hit the conflict-wrought region, a government official said Monday.
Fighters from the Islamic State-aligned Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) late Sunday rounded up scores of farmers in Dumba on the shores of Lake Chad and shot them dead, Usman Tar, Borno state information commissioner said in a statement.
The "initial report indicates about 40 farmers have been killed while the whereabouts of many who escaped the attack are being traced for reunion with their families," Tar said.
The state government has ordered troops fighting militants in the region "to track and obliterate the insurgent elements" operating around Dumba and their enclaves in the wider Lake Chad area, Tar said.

The farmers "strayed off" the safe limit set by troops for farming and fishing in the area that is a sanctuary for militants from ISWAP and its Boko Haram rival and is dotted with landmines and "prone to nocturnal attacks", the commissioner said.
Lake Chad, which straddles Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad, serves as a hideout for Boko Haram and ISWAP who use it as a base from which to launch attacks into the countries.
According to a Nigerian intelligence report seen by AFP, "casualties could be over 100 persons killed in the attack" which it blamed on ISWAP fighters.

The farmers came from the region of Gwoza on the border with Cameroon to cultivate cowpea and onions on the shores of the freshwater lake, according to an anti-militant militia.
"The farmers had a deal with Boko Haram to farm in the Kwatar Yobe and Tudun Kanta near Dumba on the shores of the lake," Babakura Kolo, a militia leader told AFP.
"What they didn't know is that Lake Chad is demarcated between ISWAP and Boko Haram. While Boko Haram controls the islands in the lake, ISWAP controls the areas on the shores," Kolo said.
ISWAP attacked the farmers as punishment for encroaching on its territory without permission and payment of levies it usually imposes on farmers, fishermen and herders who want to operate in the area under its control, he added.
ISWAP and Boko Haram have been locked in deadly infighting for territorial control since their split in 2016 over ideological differences, which led to the killing of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau during clashes in May 2021.

"ISWAP fighters were enraged on discovering the farmers had paid money to Boko Haram to farm in the area and decided to punish them by gathering them and opening fire on them," Kolo said.
He dismissed the death toll given by Tar as a "gross understatement", saying the casualties "far exceed that number."
"We are talking of more than 100 killed in the attack," he said.
Sallau Arzika, a fisherman in Baga who agreed with Kolo's casualty toll, said the farmers took an unnecessary risk by striking a deal with militants.

'Benevolent' Italian court spares man who murdered wife and daughter citing 'understandably human motives'

North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles into the sea Tuesday, according to Seoul's military, in what experts said could be a message to US President-elect Donald Trump's incoming administration.
The launch comes as Japan's foreign minister Takeshi Iwaya visits South Korea for a series of meetings with top officials, with the Asian neighbours seeking to boost bilateral ties before Trump returns to office next week.
"The South Korean military detected several short-range ballistic missiles fired into the East Sea," Seoul's military said, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.
It said the launch took place around 09:30 am local time (0030 GMT) near North Korea's Ganggye area, with the missiles flying 250 kilometres (155 miles) before landing in the sea.
"The intelligence authorities of South Korea and the US have detected and monitored North Korea's missile launch preparations in advance, and immediately detected and tracked them at the time of launch," the military said.
It said it was maintaining "full readiness" and sharing information with the United States and Japan while "strengthening surveillance and alertness" for more launches.
Seoul's acting President Choi Sang-mok slammed the launch, saying it violated UN Security Council resolutions.
"Seoul will respond more strongly to North Korea's provocations based on its strong security posture and alliance with the US," he said.
Experts said the latest launch on Tuesday could be intended as a message to the incoming Trump administration.
"It could be aimed at the US," said Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.
"It may indicate an intention to put pressure ahead of the Trump administration's second term."
Ahn Chan-il, a defector-turned-researcher who runs the World Institute for North Korea Studies, told AFP "it appears to be an intention to assert presence ahead of the Trump administration".
He said it could also be aimed at "destabilising South Korea during Seoul's own period of turmoil", as suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol faces an impeachment trial that begins Tuesday in the Constitutional Court after a failed martial law bid last month.
<h2>Second test this year&nbsp;</h2>
The Tuesday launch is Pyongyang's second this year, after it fired last week what it said was a new hypersonic missile system aimed at deterring the country's rivals in the Pacific.
The location of the test site was undisclosed but images released by North Korean state media KCNA showed leader Kim Jong Un observing last week's launch with his teenage daughter Ju Ae.
Kim said the missile flew 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) -- beyond the 1,100-kilometre (680-mile) figure given by South Korea's military -- and travelled at 12 times the speed of sound before landing in the ocean.
KCNA cited the use of a "new compound of carbon fibre" in the missile's engine, which experts warned could allow Pyongyang to hit further targets with technology to which only the United States, Russia and China currently have access.
The launch also used a "new comprehensive and effective method" for its flight and guidance control system, KCNA said.
Last week's alleged hypersonic missile launch came as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was visiting South Korea.&nbsp;
While in Seoul, Blinken said Russia was increasing cooperation with Pyongyang, adding they were working ever more closely on advanced space technology.
<h2>US warnings&nbsp;</h2>
Blinken also voiced renewed concern that Russia, a veto-wielding UN Security Council member, would formally accept North Korea as a nuclear state in a blow to global consensus that Pyongyang must end its programme.
In late October, North Korea test-fired what it said was its most advanced and powerful solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Days later, it fired a salvo of short-range ballistic missiles.
In response, South Korea fired a ballistic missile into the sea in a show of force.
US and South Korean intelligence also believe that North Korea late last year sent thousands of troops to fight against Ukraine and has already suffered hundreds of casualties.
But neither North Korea nor Russia has officially confirmed that Pyongyang's forces are fighting for Moscow.

Before the meeting, the German foreign ministry told AFP that the talks were "not negotiations" while Iran similarly emphasised that they were merely "consultations".
The talks, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, will cover a "wide range of topics," Iran's foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, said during a weekly press briefing.
"The primary objective of these talks is to remove the sanctions" on Iran, he noted, adding that Iran was also "listening to the topics that the opposite parties want to raise".&nbsp;
ISNA reported that Takht-Ravanchi will meet on Tuesday separately with the European Union's Enrique Mora in Geneva.

On Thursday, France's foreign ministry said the meeting was a sign that the E3 countries were "continuing to work towards a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear programme, the progress of which is extremely problematic".
The talks come with Iran's nuclear programme under renewed focus in light of Trump's return to the White House on January 20.
During his first term, Trump pursued a policy of "maximum pressure", withdrawing the United States from a landmark nuclear deal which imposed curbs on Iran's nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief.&nbsp;
Tehran adhered to the deal until Washington's withdrawal, but then began rolling back its commitments.&nbsp;
Efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear pact have since faltered, and European officials have repeatedly expressed frustrations over Tehran's non-compliance.
Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron said the acceleration of Iran's nuclear programme was "bringing us very close to the breaking point". Iran called the comments "baseless" and "deceitful".
In December, Britain, Germany and France accused Tehran of growing its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to "unprecedented levels" without "any credible civilian justification".
"We reiterate our determination to use all diplomatic tools to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, including using snapback if necessary," they added.

The move, aimed at limiting access to advanced AI technology for China and other rival nations, comes during the final days of Joe Biden's presidency.
Under the new regulations, the number of AI chips exported to most countries will be limited, while unrestricted access to US AI technology will be granted to America&rsquo;s ally nations. However, exports to China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea will remain blocked.

The Boeing 737-800 was flying from Thailand to Muan, South Korea, on December 29 carrying 181 passengers and crew when it belly-landed at Muan airport and exploded in a fireball after slamming into a concrete barrier.

"Improvement was deemed necessary including the localiser and its foundations for a total of nine facilities across seven airports, including Muan airport," the land ministry said in a statement.
The changes would also apply to international airports in the cities of Jeju and Gimhae.
South Korean and US investigators are still probing the cause of the crash, which prompted a national outpouring of mourning with memorials set up across the country.
Attention has focused on several possible causes, but questions have been raised about why the concrete barricade, known as a localiser and used to help planes navigate their landings, was at the end of the runway.
