Rescuers recovered 51 additional bodies from an abandoned gold mine in South Africa on Tuesday, raising the death toll to 60 after nine bodies were retrieved on Monday, the first day of a massive rescue operation.
According to a statement from the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Tuesday night, 106 illegal miners were arrested for illegal mining at the old Buffelsfontein Gold Mine in Stilfontein, North West Province.
Among those arrested on Tuesday are 67 from Mozambique, 26 from Lesotho, and 11 from Zimbabwe, in addition to two South African nationals, SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who visited the site on Tuesday, said the operation was expected to last about 10 days.
Ninety-two illegal miners were rescued during the two-day rescue operation, with all expected to face charges related to illegal mining and immigration violations.

Local community members gathered at the mine, hoping for the return of their loved ones.
Emergency workers have been labouring under intense heat since Monday to rescue the illegal miners, who had been trapped underground since November without vital supplies for much of the time.
"I have hope that our people are going to come out. Our brothers, our friends and us in the first group. We know a lot of guys here. They are our brothers. They are our friends. They have kids. So, we are trying the best we can to help them out, because it will hurt when I see my friend's kid tomorrow running around the streets, and daddy is not around," said Tieho Moabi, one of the miners.
"Some of them are as young as 14, at least according to my estimation. They are just skin and bones. Very, very sad to look at them. So, we brought some soft porridge and we brought some water. They couldn't wait because they have not been drinking water for a long time now. And they are hungry. They are weak," said Bishop Victor Phalana, border member of Benchmarks Foundation.

Community organisations, which have been urging authorities to help the miners, believe the aid came too late for many who failed to survive the ordeal.

"People are really disturbed and people are saying we shouldn't have arrived to this point where we are just taking dead bodies. This could have been arranged a long time ago," said Phalana.
Over the years, many gold mines have closed due to declining production, only to be overtaken by illegal foreign miners seeking gold.

A 14-year-old boy was fatally stabbed on a bus in London, with the police launching an investigation and arresting three people in connection with the crime, according to the British media reports on Wednesday (Jan 15).&nbsp;
The police identified the victim as Kelyan Bokassa who was stabbed on Tuesday. A report by The Guardian said that Bokassa was travelling on a 472 bus to Abbey Wood when he was attacked at about 2.30 pm local time.

News agency AFP also reported citing Palestinian sources close to negotiations that militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad have approved the Gaza ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal.
"The resistance factions reached an agreement among themselves and informed the mediators of their approval of the (prisoner) exchange deal and ceasefire," one source was quoted as saying by AFP on condition of anonymity. Another Palestinian source confirmed their approval of the deal.
Arab officials involved in the talks have speculated that the deal might get final approval within 48 hours.
On the other hand, news agency Reuters quoted a Hamas official as saying that the group is yet to submit its written response to the proposal deal.&nbsp;

South Korea showed the lowest optimism, with 67&nbsp;per cent of respondents saying they felt negatively about the impact of Trump&rsquo;s presidency on their country.

&ldquo;Peace Seekers&rdquo; believe he might improve global stability despite doubts about his domestic impact, while the &ldquo;Conflicted&rdquo; view his policies as favourable for Americans but potentially harmful internationally. Lastly, the &ldquo;Uncertain&rdquo; are waiting to assess his influence&nbsp;both domestically and globally.

But on the eve of the inauguration, Mondlane threatened to "paralyse" the new government with daily demonstrations following his earlier calls for a national strike in the days before the ceremony.
Mondlane, 50, who is popular with the youth, maintains the October 9 polls were rigged in favour of the Frelimo party, which has governed Mozambique since independence from Portugal in 1975.
"This regime does not want peace," Mondlane said in an address on Facebook Tuesday, adding that his communications team was met with bullets on the streets this week.
"We'll protest every single day. If it means paralysing the country for the entire term, we will paralyse it for the entire term."

International observers have said the election was marred by irregularities, while the EU mission condemned what it called the "unjustified alteration of election results".
Neighbouring South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa attended the inauguration, while former colonial ruler Portugal sent Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel.
Ahead of the ceremony, Maputo-based political and security risk analyst Johann Smith told AFP that an absence of a large number of foreign heads of state "sends a strong message".

The extent of the unrest from now on "depends on how Chapo will tackle the crisis", analyst Borges Nhamirre told AFP.&nbsp;
The inauguration of parliamentary lawmakers on Monday was held amid relative calm.&nbsp;
The streets were deserted Monday, with most shops closed either in protest against the ceremony or out of fear of violence, while military police surrounded the parliament building and police blocked main roads.&nbsp;
Still, at least six people were killed in the Inhambane and Zambezia regions north of the capital, according to local civil society group Plataforma Decide.
<h2>Possible concessions</h2>
Unrest since the election has claimed more than 300 lives, according to the group's tally, with security forces accused of using excessive force against demonstrators. Police officers have also died, according to the authorities.&nbsp;

According to official results, Chapo won 65 per cent of the presidential vote, compared to 24 per cent for Mondlane.
However the opposition leader claims that he won 53 per cent and that Mozambique's election institutions manipulated the results.
Frelimo parliamentarians also dominate the 250-seat national assembly with 171 seats compared to the Podemos party's 43.&nbsp;
