Bird feathers and bloodstains were found in both engines of the Jeju Air plane that crashed in December, killing 179 people, according to a preliminary investigation released Monday.
The Boeing 737-800 was flying from Thailand to Muan in southwest South Korea on December 29, carrying 181 passengers and crew, when it belly-landed and exploded into a fireball after slamming into a concrete barrier.
It was the worst aviation disaster on South Korean soil.
South Korean and American investigators are still probing the cause of the crash, with a bird strike, faulty landing gear and the runway barrier being examined as possible issues.
Both engines recovered from the crash site were inspected, and bird bloodstains and feathers were "found on each", the report said.
"The pilots identified a group of birds while approaching runway 01, and a security camera filmed HL8088 coming close to a group of birds during a go-around," the report added, referring to the jet's registration number.
It did not specify whether the engines had stopped working in the moments leading up to the crash.
DNA analysis identified the feathers and blood as coming from Baikal teals, migratory birds which fly to Korea in winter from their breeding grounds in Siberia.
The report also confirmed that both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder had stopped working four minutes before the disaster, leaving a gap in the data.
It did not suggest a cause for the malfunction.
The captain had over 6,800 flight hours, while the first officer had 1,650 hours, the report said. Both were killed in the crash, which was survived only by two flight attendants.
The Jeju plane exploded in flames when it collided with a concrete embankment during its landing, prompting questions about why that type barricade was in place at the end of the runway.&nbsp;
Last week, authorities said they would replace such concrete barriers at airports nationwide with "breakable structures".&nbsp;

Police in Florida, US have arrested a West Palm Beach resident for allegedly threatening to kill US President Donald Trump.

Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Martin Luther King, and Donald Trump with the caption "Unfortunately, one is still alive."
A second post saw Atkins share a post that said "Jan 20th (Trump inauguration day) is the Day of Mourning for USA" along with the caption "Bullets, please. Jesus! Save America".
In yet another post, the Florida man wrote: "I've been banned from X because I said I hope and pray someone kills him. We haven't had an assassination in years."

<h2>Arrest and detention</h2>
Police, as per reports, arrested Atkins on Friday (Jan 24) at around 7:30 pm (local time) near his home in West Palm Beach.
The man was carrying cocaine at the time of his arrest, and later, during the subsequent interview, admitted to making threatening posts against Trump.
He was transported to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Main Detention Center for detention. He faces a second-degree felony of written or electronic threats to kill, do bodily injury, or conduct a mass shooting or an act of terrorism, along with possession of cocaine.

Israel wanted Yehud, who is a civilian, to be among the hostages who were released by the Hamas on Saturday (Jan 25). The militant group however released four female Israeli soldiers instead.
The ceasefire agreement, which came into effect on 19 January, has already seen the exchange of seven hostages and over 200 Palestinian prisoners. Israel, however, claimed Hamas "breached" the deal by not releasing civilian hostages first.&nbsp;

<h2>Return to Northern Gaza</h2>
Israel also said it would allow displaced Gazans to return north of the Netzarim Corridor starting Monday at 07:00 local time (09:00 GMT). This seven-kilometre stretch is controlled by Israel and cuts off north Gaza from the rest of the territory.&nbsp;

The resolution of the dispute over Yehud's release comes after proof of her wellbeing was provided to Egyptian mediators as early as Saturday evening, reports BBC. This breakthrough came hours after US President Donald Trump proposed relocating Gazans to Egypt and Jordan&mdash;an idea condemned by Palestinian leaders and firmly rejected by both countries. &nbsp;
The January ceasefire has paused violence that was triggered by Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack on Israel, which left 1,200 dead and resulted in 251 hostages taken to Gaza. So far, in the war, over 47,200 Palestinian deaths have been reported.

In a more shocking revelation, Balaji's mother claimed that a private autopsy she paid for showed he was shot from above.&nbsp;

Romania's ministry of culture has vowed to take all possible steps to recover the stolen artefacts, which were loaned to the Dutch museum from Bucharest.

Drents Museum director Harry Tupan said staff were "intensely shocked" by the robbery, stressing that it was the biggest incident in its 170-year history.

The escalation in fighting prompted an emergency UN Security Council meeting, originally set for Monday, to be moved up to Sunday. 
Congolese army spokesman General Sylvain Ekenge told journalists his country's armed forces were working to "push back the enemy".
"Rwanda is determined to seize the city of Goma," he said.
The DRC announced it was pulling its diplomats from Kigali in a letter to Rwanda's embassy in Kinshasa.
Urging the rebels to halt their advance, the European Union's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said, "Rwanda must cease its support for the M23 and withdraw."
"The EU strongly condemns Rwanda's military presence in the DRC as a clear violation of international law, the UN charter, and the territorial integrity of the DRC," she said. 
The African Union and French President Emmanuel Macron, who spoke in separate telephone calls with both Rwandan President Kagame and DRC's Tshisekedi, also added their voices to calls for an immediate halt to the fighting.
<h2>'Risk of regional war'</h2>
In Goma, artillery detonations in the distance resonated as far as the city centre.
An AFP reporter saw a burned-out, smoking armoured vehicle of the UN peacekeeping force MONUSCO on the road between Goma and Sake, the scene&nbsp;of intense fighting in recent days.
South Africa's defence ministry said Saturday that the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) "lost nine members by Friday".
Seven of the dead were serving in the regional force sent by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and two were UN peacekeepers, it added.
A Malawian army spokesman said three of its soldiers with the SADC force also died during clashes, while Uruguay's military announced that one of its members serving with the UN peacekeepers had been killed and four others wounded.
Some 15,000 peacekeepers are in the DRC.
The United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) said its Quick Reaction Forces had "been actively engaged in intense combat" with its heavy artillery firing against M23 positions.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed fears on Thursday that the fighting could aggravate "the risk of a regional war".

Since the beginning of January, about 400,000 people have been forced to flee the fighting, according to the UN.

Ahead of the planned India-EU summit this year, European Union sources said, &ldquo;We are bullish on developing relationships with India.&rdquo; The 15th India-EU summit took place in 2020, with leaders endorsing the India-EU strategic partnership and a common roadmap on a joint action plan. Of the over 100 action plans that were agreed on, 80% have been delivered.
Both sides, for the first time, are looking at the India-EU Homeland security conversation with big ticket announcements expected this year. As part of counter-terror cooperation, the EU organised a workshop on the use of commercial drones for terror activities to deal with terrorist threats online.
