New Delhi: India has asked the United Kingdom to assure the safety of Indian diplomatic missions and Indian diplomats in the country amid growing concerns over Khalistani extremist elements. The matter came up during talks between EAM Dr S Jaishankar and UK&rsquo;s Home Secretary Yvette Cooper last week.
A statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs on the conclusion of EAM Dr S Jaishankar&rsquo;s UK visit said, &ldquo;EAM brought up the safety and security of our Missions/Posts and diplomats and reiterated the need to expeditiously bring to justice, the perpetrators of attacks on the premises of HCI London. He also emphasised the need to address the growing concerns over the increasing anti-India activities of PKE elements.&rdquo;

This is not the first time that a major incident involving Khalistanis has happened in the UK. In 2019 and 2023, the Indian high commission in the UK was attacked. In Sept 2023, the Indian High Commissioner was prevented from entering a gurdwara in Glasgow by three Khalistani extremists during a community event.&nbsp; Earlier this year, Khalistani elements disrupted a screening of an Indian film in the UK.

UK&rsquo;s Tower Bridge has been closed on Monday (Mar 10) after a man climbed up the iconic landmark in London. This comes two days after a pro-Palestinian protester caused chaos after climbing the Elizabeth Tower.

The application is facing an uncertain future in the country as a US law ordered the short video platform to divest from its Chinese owner ByteDance or face a ban in the United States.
On being asked if there was going to soon be a deal on TikTok, Trump, aboard the Air Force One, told reporters, "it could."
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re dealing with four different groups. And a lot of people want it, and it&rsquo;s up to me,&rdquo; Trump said.
&ldquo;All four are good,&rdquo; he added, without sharing further details.
The popular short-video platform, which has approximately 170 million users in the US, briefly went offline ahead of a law requiring its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to either sell the app or face a nationwide ban. The law was set to take effect on 19 January.
After assuming office on 20 January, Trump signed an order delaying the enforcement of the ban on TikTok by 75 days. He has since confirmed discussions with various parties about acquiring the application.

Trump confirms US in talks with four different groups interested in acquiring TikTok

Hamas, on Monday (Mar 10), accused Israel of backtracking on a truce deal and refusing to go forward with the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal, as Israeli negotiators were scheduled to discuss a potential extension in Qatar.
"The (Israeli) occupation continues to renege on the agreement and refuses to commence the second phase, exposing its intentions of evasion and stalling," the Palestinian militant group said in a statement.
Hamas, on Monday, said that it was displaying &ldquo;flexibility&rdquo; in Gaza ceasefire deal talks with its mediators as it awaits results of the negotiations by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States with Israel.
&ldquo;We dealt flexibly with the efforts made by mediators and [US President Donald] Trump&rsquo;s envoy, and we await the results of the upcoming negotiations and oblige [Israel] to agree and go to the second phase,&rdquo; the Palestinian militant group said, according to The Times of Israel.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reiterated that Ukraine wants peace, insisting that Russia is the "only reason" the war continues. His comments came on Monday, just before his visit to Saudi Arabia for discussions with US officials.

Iran's mission to the United Nations had indicated Sunday that Tehran might be open to talks aimed at addressing US concerns about the potential militarisation of its nuclear programme -- though not to ending the program completely.
But on Monday, Iran's top diplomat seemed to slam the door on such discussions, saying Tehran's nuclear programme was and always will be entirely peaceful and so there was "no such thing as its 'potential militarization'".
"We will NOT negotiate under pressure and intimidation. We will NOT even consider it, no matter what the subject may be," foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said on social media platform X.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has reinstated his policy of exerting "maximum pressure" against Iran, reimposing sweeping sanctions aimed at crushing its oil industry in particular.
The US State Department said Sunday the decision not to renew Iraq's sanctions waiver was made to "ensure we do not allow Iran any degree of economic or financial relief."
Iran supplies a third of Iraq's gas and electricity, providing Tehran with substantial income.
<h2>'Never take place'&nbsp;</h2>
On Sunday, the Iranian mission to the United Nations had sounded a more conciliatory note, suggested Tehran might be willing to discuss certain issues.
"If the objective of negotiations is to address concerns vis-a-vis any potential militarization of Iran's nuclear program, such discussions may be subject to consideration," said a statement from the mission.
"However, should the aim be the dismantlement of Iran's peaceful nuclear program to claim that what (President Barack) Obama failed to achieve has now been accomplished, such negotiations will never take place," it said.
The waiver for Iraq was introduced in 2018, when Washington reimposed sanctions on Tehran after Trump abandoned a nuclear deal with Iran negotiated under Obama.
A spokesman for the US embassy in Baghdad on Sunday urged Baghdad "to eliminate its dependence on Iranian sources of energy as soon as possible."
"The President's maximum pressure campaign is designed to end Iran's nuclear threat, curtail its ballistic missile program, and stop it from supporting terrorist groups," the spokesman said.
The landmark 2015 deal that Obama helped negotiate between Tehran and major powers promised sanctions relief in return for Iran curbing its nuclear programme.
Tehran, which denies seeking nuclear weapons, initially adhered to the nuclear deal after Trump pulled out of it, but then rolled back commitments.
US officials estimate Iran would now need mere weeks to build a nuclear bomb if it chose to.

Spanish Police arrest 10 Pakistani nationals for promoting terrorism and extremism

Torrential rain from the remnants of&nbsp;Cyclone&nbsp;Alfred&nbsp;flooded swathes of Australia's east coast on Monday, as workers battled to restore power to more than 190,000 homes and businesses.
The weather system, which made landfall on Saturday, has battered a 400-kilometre (250-mile) stretch of coast for five days, claiming one life when a driver was swept off a bridge Friday.
Even as the wind and rain eased, authorities issued a string of flood and severe weather warnings across the region, which straddles Queensland and New South Wales.
"This event is far from over," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told a news conference in the flood-hit New South Wales city of Lismore.
"We need to continue to not be complacent."
The tropical depression dumped 30 centimetres (one foot) of rain in 24 hours over parts of Queensland's capital city of Brisbane, the bureau of meteorology said.
Floodwaters swamped some streets in the city and its surrounds, stranding half-submerged cars in the worst-affected areas, images published in Australian media showed.
Emergency services rescued 17 people from fast-moving waters in Queensland overnight, the state's premier, David Crisafulli said.
"Rainfall is leading to flash flooding as well as river flooding in parts of the southeast," he told a news conference.
"We are urging people to stay connected because of the prospect of more intense flooding during the course of today."
<h2>Flash flooding&nbsp;</h2>
Heavy rainfall, flash flooding and moderate-to-major river flooding remained a risk, bureau of meteorology forecaster Jonathan How said.
"This is all due to the remnants of ex-Tropical&nbsp;Cyclone&nbsp;Alfred," he told AFP.
"It did cross the southeast Queensland coast on Saturday, but it has been very slow moving even as it moved over land. And, quite importantly, it is still dragging a lot of moisture."
Utility companies said more than 185,000 homes and businesses were still blacked out in Queensland, and another 10,000 in New South Wales.
In New South Wales, "helicopters are being used where possible to survey remote areas of the network to help identify the damage", a spokesperson for Essential Energy said.
<h2>'Unpredictable'&nbsp;</h2>
"The weather pattern is still somewhat unpredictable. We're expecting some increased rainfalls over the next 24 hours," New South Wales Premier Chris Minns told a news conference.
Nevertheless, all but one of the evacuation notices in the state have been lifted, he said.
The wild weather has so far claimed at least one life, after a 61-year-old man's four-wheel-drive pickup was swept off a bridge Friday in northern New South Wales.
He tried in vain to cling to a tree branch in the river before disappearing into the rapid waters, police said, and his body was found the next day.

Torrential rain from the remnants of Cyclone Alfred flooded swathes of Australia's east coast on Monday, as workers battled to restore power to more than 190,000 homes and businesses. The weather system, which made landfall on Saturday, has battered a 400-kilometre (250-mile) stretch of coast for five days, claiming one life when a driver was swept off a bridge Friday. Even as the wind and rain eased, authorities issued a string of flood and severe weather warnings across the region, which straddles Queensland and New South Wales. "This event is far from over," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told a news conference in the flood-hit New South Wales city of Lismore. "We need to continue to not be complacent." The tropical depression dumped 30 centimetres (one foot) of rain in 24 hours over parts of Queensland's capital city of Brisbane, the bureau of meteorology said. Floodwaters swamped some streets in the city and its surrounds, stranding half-submerged cars in the worst-affected areas, images published in Australian media showed. Emergency services rescued 17 people from fast-moving waters in Queensland overnight, the state's premier, David Crisafulli said. She had gone with friends while on their spring break and was last seen on March 6 on the beach of the Riu Republica Hotel in Punta Cana.&nbsp;
Amid an extensive search, ABC News on Sunday (Mar 9) reported citing officials that a University of Pittsburgh student who was reported missing in the Dominican Republic is believed to have died by drowning.&nbsp;

"She went to the beach on March 6 early morning around 4 am with friends and some other guys they met at the resort. After that, her friends came back after some time, and my daughter did not come back, did not show up from the beach," her father said, further adding that her friends alerted authorities when she wasn't in her room the following morning.&nbsp;

She and this person went for a swim and were caught by a big wave, the police report said, per ABC.&nbsp;
Her father, Subbarayudu, said earlier he wants local authorities to broaden their investigation.&nbsp;
"They're only looking in the water, but I want them to also investigate other possibilities including whether this is a case of kidnapping or human trafficking," he told CNN.&nbsp;
"We don't think she would be able to survive for more than three days in the water and I think something else might&rsquo;ve happened to her," he added.&nbsp;

The United Nations (UN) called the reports of entire families being killed in north-west Syria as "extremely disturbing". It is being considered as Syria's highest death toll since the start of its revolution in 2011.&nbsp;
"The total number of civilian martyrs who were liquidated amounted to 973, including women and children," SOHR said.&nbsp;
It added that "killings, field executions, and ethnic cleansing operations" were still ongoing following deadly clashes between security forces and Alawite gunmen loyal to toppled president Assad.

It all started on Thursday (March 6) when Syria's government forces attempted to detain a suspect near Jableh but were ambushed by armed Assad supporters.

Canada's next PM Mark Carney warns of existential challenge, says US wants 'our country'

US Secretary of State Marco&nbsp;Rubio&nbsp;was set to head Sunday to Saudi Arabia for talks with Ukraine as President Donald Trump decides whether to relent on an aid freeze to the wartime partner.
The State Department also confirmed&nbsp;Rubio&nbsp;would travel to Group of Seven talks in Canada, making him the senior-most official to visit since the return of Trump, who has launched a trade war with the US neighbor and mocked its sovereignty.
In the talks from Monday through Wednesday in Jeddah,&nbsp;Rubio&nbsp;will discuss how to "advance the president's goal to end the Russia-Ukraine war," State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said, steering clear of pre-Trump phrasing of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously announced that he will be in Jeddah, as has Trump confidant and envoy Steve Witkoff.
Trump suspended aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine after a disastrous February 28 meeting with Zelensky at the White House.

During his interview, Trump said that the US has been taken advantage of by other countries.

"For years, globalists have been ripping off the United States. They've been taking money away from the United States, and all we're doing is getting some of it back, and we're going to treat our country fairly," he said.
"This country has been ripped off by every nation in the world, every company in the world. We've been ripped off at levels never seen before, and what we're going to do is get it back," he added.
Trump has previously imposed tariffs on Mexico and Canada, as well as on China, arguing that these measures are necessary due to border security concerns. He claims that fentanyl is being smuggled into the US through imports from these countries.

While many Canadian and Mexican goods covered under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) were initially exempt from his 25% tariffs, Trump confirmed that these exemptions will end next month.
Explaining his leniency, Trump said, "We're a big, big country, and they do a lot of their business with us, whereas in our case it's much less significant. We do very little with Canada by comparison, and I wanted to help the American carmakers until April 2nd."
On Friday, Trump took to Truth Social and accused Canada of cheating the US, saying, "Canada is cheating the United States Farmers on USMCA."

"In 2024, Canada retained Tariffs on various US Goods, particularly in protected sectors like Dairy that are operated under a supply management system," he said.
He then proceeded to give examples of the unfair Canada tariffs on US and said, "Some examples of Canadian Tariffs on U.S. Dairy outside of the limited quota include: Milk: Up to 243%, Butter: Up to 298%, Cheese: Up to 245%"
