Israel says it struck Beirut, targeted Hezbollah commander behind Golan Heights attack

Israeli army on Tuesday (July 3) said they carried out a targeted strike in Lebanon's capital Beirut, days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government blamed Lebanon-based and Iran-backedgroup Hezbollah for a bomb strike in the Golan Heights that killed 12 children.
A Hezbollah source cited by the news agency AFP said that "two people were killed in the Israeli strike" but later added that the commander who was targeted by Israel had survived. Hours later, it emerged that Fuad Shukr, alias Hajj Mohsin, the commander targeted by Israel, perished in the attack.
The television footage fromLebanon showed plumes of smoke in Beirut's Haret Hreik, widely seen as an area with substantial support for Hezbollah. The state media of the country stated that a drone fired three rockets at Beirut's suburbs.
Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said that Hezbollah had "crossed the red line".
"Hezbollah crossed the red line," Gallant wrote on X, minutes after the Israeli military said it had carried out Beirut strike.

After Israel Defense Forces said that they struck the Lebanese capital, a source close to Hezbollah told news agency AFP that a senior commander was targeted in an Israeli strike on its south Beirut stronghold.

"A leading commander has been targeted" in the strike near Hezbollah's Shura Council, the powerful Lebanese group's decision-making body.
Who is Hezbollah commander targeted by IDF's Beirut strike?
The Hezbollah commander targeted in the IDF strike has been named as Fuad Shukr, alias Hajj Mohsin, a senior adviser to Hezbollah's top leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
Shukr was named by the IDF several years ago as the commander of Hezbollah’s precision missile project, The Times of Israelhas reported.
Shukr is also wanted by the United States for his role in the 1983 bombing of a US Marines barracks in Beirut.
At the time of filing this report, Fuad is reported to have perished inthe strike.
