US President Donald Trump defended his "mission accomplished" statement earlier today. Trump, on Saturday, took to Twitter and praised Western air strikes against the Syrian government as "perfectly executed", and added "Mission Accomplished".

"A perfectly executed strike last night. Thank you to France and the United Kingdom for their wisdom and the power of their fine Military. Could not have had a better result. Mission Accomplished!" read Trump's tweet.

The US President today clarified saying, "I knew they would seize on this but felt it is such a great Military term, it should be brought back. Use often!"

"The Syrian raid was so perfectly carried out, with such precision, that the only way the Fake News Media could demean was by my use of the term 'Mission Accomplished'" Trump said on Twitter.

The phrase is associated with President George W. Bush, who used it in 2003 during the Iraq war but which dogged him for the rest of his presidency.
