Ashwin Ramaswami, first Gen Z Indian-American Democrat, officially launches campaign for Georgia Senate seat

Ashwin Ramaswami, a 24-year old Indian-origin politician from Generation Z,on Wednesday (Mar 20) officially launched his campaign to run for a Senate seat from the US state of Georgia. The Democrat is the first Gen Z Indian-American to pursue a state or federal legislative position in the United States.

“Today, I officially launched my General Election campaign as the Democratic nominee for GA State Senate District 48,” said Ramaswami, in a post on X along with his campaign video.

In the two-minute-long clip, the son of Tamil parents with expertise in software engineering, election security, and technology law, pitched what makes him different and why people should vote for him.

Ramaswami called out his opponent and incumbent state senator Shawn Still for being an “election denier” and called him a “typical Georgia politician”.

Still was among those indicted along with former US president Donald Trump for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state.

“I’m an election security expert running in my hometown against a fake elector who was indicted with Trump for trying to overturn the 2020 election results,” Ramaswami said.

“I’m the son of immigrants. I’m an engineer. I’m Gen Z. And I was born and raised right here in Johns Creek. And I’m ready to get to work building the Georgia that could be the one just over the horizon.”

Ramaswami said he would work to expand Medicaid, pass “common-sense” gun safety measures, and protect reproductive healthcare.

“The only thing standing in our way are the politicians of yesterday…like my opponent, Shawn Still,” he said.

Who is Ashwin Ramaswami?

Earlier this year, he had announced plans to enter the race for the state Senate in Georgia’s 48th district, earlier this year.

Born to immigrant parents from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Ramaswami graduated with a degree in Computer Science from Stanford and is currently attending Georgetown University Law Center.

“For a long time, I was interested in how I could give back to my community. I didn’t want to stay in the Bay. I wanted to come and give back,”Ramaswami told The Stanford Daily, in an interview last month.
