Tunisian opposition leaders launch hunger strike amid Saied crackdown on dissent

Six jailed opposition leaders in Tunisia have begun a hunger strike in protest against what they call President Kais Saied’s authoritarian crackdown. Saied, who dissolved parliament in 2021 and expanded control over the judiciary in 2023, defends the detentions as necessary. The opposition accuses him of muzzling dissent and undermining democratic freedoms.
