Supreme Court: No criminal consequences for not singing Vande Mataram

Carnatic vocalist TM Krishna has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of a law mandating the rendition of all stanzas of Vande Mataram under threat of penal action. During the initial hearing, a three-judge bench noted that conscientious objectors cannot face criminal consequences for refusing to sing the national song on religious grounds.
