Reno wildefire: Hawk fire engulfs 53 square km near Reno
A fast-growing wildfire destroying homes in northwest Reno, Nevada, on Sunday was human-caused and uncontained, authorities said, as they encouraged some 90,000 people to evacuate. The Hawk Fire, which ignited Saturday near Hawk Meadow Trail, exploded to about 13,000 acres by Sunday, driven by strong winds across the Peavine Peak area. Mandatory evacuation orders covered roughly 42,000 residents, with another 45,000 under evacuation warnings. At least six people were injured, including three civilians and three first responders, and several structures were destroyed. Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County, mobilizing the Nevada National Guard and aerial firefighting resources as crews worked with zero containment.
