Maharashtra is considering tighter curbs on social media speech, with the state government exploring an amendment to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) that could make online defamation a criminal offence. A high-level committee led by the Maharashtra DGP is examining ways to tackle unverified, defamatory and potentially harmful digital posts, reviving debate over free speech and criminal liability online.
