Iran's massive aerial attack on Israel was a "spectacular and embarrassing failure". US forces helped shoot down most of the missiles and drones fired by Tehran. US President Joe Biden has proclaimed "ironclad" support for Israel's defence but the White House says it does not want any escalation of the situation or a wider war in West Asia.
