<p>One of Microsoft's AI-powered facial analysis products, which purports to determine emotions based on videos and images of participants, is apparently being phased out of public access. Because there are no universal facial expressions, and even if there were, they would vary between groups, and because it is blatantly unscientific to "equate exterior displays of emotion with inside feelings," experts have long criticised such "emotion recognition" programmes.</p>

<p>Professor of psychology at Northeastern University, Lisa Feldman Barrett, told The Verge that while AI-powered emotion identification programmes may recognise frowns, "that's not the same as recognising fury." The topic of AI-based emotion recognition has been reviewed by Barrett.</p>

<p>The decision by Microsoft to discontinue this specific product is a part of a "bigger revision" of the organization's AI ethics guidelines.</p>

<p>In order to stress accountability and "find out who utilises its services and stronger human control into where these technologies are employed," the corporation has updated its Responsible AI Standards, which were first presented in 2019.</p>

<p><strong>What does this mean, then?</strong></p>

<p>Microsoft will first remove some parts of its facial recognition services from "Azure Face" and restrict access to others. Users will now need to apply to utilise Azure Face and provide specific information about their deployment plans to Microsoft. However, some use cases, such as the automated face blurring in pictures and videos, will continue to be available to everyone.</p>

<p>Microsoft is also retiring Azure Face’s ability to identify attributes like gender, smile, age, hair, facial hair, and makeup.</p>

<p>"Experts inside and outside the company have highlighted the lack of scientific consensus on the definition of ‘emotions,’ the challenges in how inferences generalise across use cases, regions, and demographics, and the heightened privacy concerns around this type of capability," wrote Microsoft’s chief responsible AI officer, Natasha Crampton, in a blog.</p>

<p>According to the corporation, existing users will lose access to these capabilities starting on June 30, 2023, while new customers will no longer be able to take advantage of them starting on June 21.</p>

<p>The twist is now here. Microsoft is ending "public" access to these tools, but they will still be used in "at least one of its own products," according to the company. For people who are blind, this product is an app called Seeing AI that "uses machine vision to describe the world."</p>

We are Germany’s largest cocktail chain, so the bar is to us what to others the kitchen is,” Sausalitos manager Christoph Heidt said in a video by Reuters. The bar designed the unique robot along with Inores Robotics AG.</p>

<p>Meta announced on Tuesday that Whatsapp is beta testing a new feature that would allow Android users to transfer Whatsapp chat history to iOS. Earlier you could either move to the same type of phone, such as Android to Android or move to a different type of phone, such as iPhone to Android.</p>

<p>Making the announcement, Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the ‘ability to securely switch between phones’ is now being added to WhatsApp.</p>

<p>If you’re moving to a different type of phone you can keep your account information including your profile photo, about, individual chats, group chats, and settings.</p>

<p>To transfer chat history, after you have selected the "Move data from Android" option, your new iPhone will look for the Move to iOS app on your older device and create a peer-to-peer connection.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Here, you will be able to choose the apps, files, contacts and more to bring over to your iPhone, and starting today the option for WhatsApp will join that list.</p>

<p>End of an era as after 27 years of service, Microsoft plans to retire the oldest browser, Internet Explorer. It is a discontinued series of graphical web browsers developed by Microsoft, a report by Mashable stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, it was included in the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems and later was provided for free as part of the package. It was first released in 1995. As per a report by Mashable, Internet Explorer will be rendered inoperable from June 15.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the start, the browser was popular and it reached a peak of 95 per cent usage in 2003. However, the user base started to decline dramatically and it was unable to maintain its top position.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Faster internet speeds and better user interfaces offered by other competitors caused Internet Explorer's popularity to decline. It was unable to keep up with the competition.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by Mashable, Sean Lyndersay Microsoft Edge program manager stated that "the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 lies in Microsoft Edge."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The company said: "We are announcing that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Microsoft Edge has Internet Explorer mode ("IE mode") built in, so you can access those legacy Internet Explorer-based websites and applications straight from Microsoft Edge," as per the company release," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"With Microsoft Edge capable of assuming this responsibility and more, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10," the company release said.</p>

<p>As per tech analyst Rob Enderle, the first version of human digital twins may exist 'before the end of the decade'.</p>

<p>The Internet of things, makes use of sensors to connect real life to a digital one and artificial intelligence makes it possible that such digital "twins" can become a reality.</p>

<p>However, as per Enderle, this can be a problem too. A thinking online version of you can be an asset to your employer. What if they choose to replace you with a version they don't have to pay for?</p>

<p>As per him, the ownership of digital twins will be one of the most defining questions of the imminent metaverse era.</p>

<p>But will these twins be able to predict a hundred per cent the course of our lives? Professor Sandra Wachter a senior research fellow in Artificial intelligence at Oxford University says no. As per her AI is not yet good at predicting these complex "single social events". She says that whether someone will be successful or not, commit a crime etc will depend on the much-debated "nature vs nurture debate" and also good, and bad luck, the people that surround us and personal choice.</p>

<p>The real value of this technology lies in its use in healthcare. It can help doctors test out the "what if" scenarios. Let's, for example, say that a patient with a bad heart needs surgery and it is a complicated one, doctors can test out the various procedures on the digital twin of that person's heart and land upon the optimal procedure.</p>

<p>Dassault Systemes' Living Heart has already created an accurate virtual model of the human heart that can be tested and analysed.</p>

<p>Added bonus: this also saves numerous animals from unnecessary and painful experiments.</p>

<p>"Embarrassing typos are a thing of the past," said Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi as he introduced three of the most requested features for the Messages app.</p>

<p>iPhone users can now edit and undo messages in iOS16. So, if you notice a typo after sending a message, you'll be able to edit it. A tiny "edited" appears in the status under the message.</p>

<p>The next new feature is that you can immediately recall a sent message. This feature works by long pressing the text which will then be prompted by many options. Among them, you have to press ‘Undo Send’ to prevent it from being read.</p>

<p>Lastly, you can now mark messages and threads as unread. It will help you to respond to a message sometime later.</p>

<p><strong>New customisable lock screen</strong></p>

<p>Taking a leaf out of the Android, iPhone users can now customise the lock screen in their iPhones, by adding more widgets. This much-needed feature makes it easy to get information at a glance, such as upcoming calendar events, the weather, battery levels, alarms, time zones, activity ring progress, and more. You can also change the colour of the background photo and also the font on the lock screen.</p>

<p>The new Lock Screen gallery will feature a range of options, from a weather wallpaper to see live weather conditions, an Astronomy wallpaper for views of the Earth, Moon, and solar system and more. Users can also create Lock Screens using their favourite emoji or colour combinations. With multiple Lock Screens, users can switch between their favourites with just a swipe.</p>

<p>One of the problems that users faced were the clunky notifications that would pop up on the home screen.</p>

<p>iOS 15 introduced “summaries”, which went a long way towards helping the situation, but they pale in comparison to Android.</p>

<p>In iO16, Apple seems to have addressed the issue in a major way. Under the new software update, notifications have been moved to the bottom of your display. Once you receive them, instead of being compiled into a list, they appear like a vertical carousel. This not only looks better but should be a big help for one-handed use of your iPhone.</p>

Twitter sets eyes on ambitious leap in user growth

<p>Apple announced software update to iPhones on Monday (June 6). The tech giant also unveiled a buy now pay later service. In addition to this, the company introduced a Macbook Air powered by its latest M2 chip.</p>

<p>The launches were announced at the Worldwide Development Conference. It is Apple' second major annual event.</p>

<p>Apple also showed off a new car dashboard that will come in new models including those of Ford and Jaguar, and the iPhone maker rolled out a slew of features for collaboration and data safety.</p>

<p>The latest operating system for iPhones will have a refreshed lockscreen that comes with new widgets, greater personalisation and a new approach towards notifications.</p>

<p><strong>Buy now pay later</strong></p>

<p>Apple Pay Later will allow users to pay using Apple Pay where it is accepted and pay for it in four installments over six weeks, without any additional fee.</p>

<p>Apple has also boosted security features on the new iOS. The company has launched safety check in the settings app. This will enable the user to revoke access to personal data like location etc.</p>

<p>Users can also logout from iCloud accounts on other devices for added safety from the Safety Check page.</p>

<p>The new iOS will have feature fresh updates for CarPlay including new gauge clusters and automakers including Ford Motor Co and Jaguar Land Rover will integrate the feature with their cars.</p>

<p>Apple revealed the M2 chip, the successor to the company's first in-house chip, named M1.</p>

<p>The latest M2 chip, which comes with 24 gigabytes of unified memory, is 18% better than its predecessor and can playback multiple streams of 4K and 8K video.</p>

Worldwide Developers Conference: Apple announces updates, launches buy now pay later service

<p>Nearly 15 years after the iPhone sparked the smartphone revolution, Apple is assembling the pieces for what it hopes will become its next business-altering device: a headset that blends the digital world with the real one.</p>

<p>The company has enlisted Hollywood directors such as Jon Favreau to develop video content for a headset that it is expected to ship next year, according to three people familiar with that work. Favreau, an executive producer of “Prehistoric Planet” on Apple TV+, is working to bring that show’s dinosaurs to life on the headset, which looks like a pair of ski goggles and aims to offer virtual- and augmented-reality experiences, these people said.</p>

<p>Separately, at its annual conference for developers this Monday, Apple plans to unveil software tools that would allow apps to add new camera and voice functionality, laying the groundwork for a hands-free interface that customers will eventually be able to navigate on the headset, according to two people familiar with the project and documents reviewed by The New York Times.</p>

<p>An Apple spokesperson, Trudy Muller, declined to comment on future projects. A spokesperson for Favreau could not comment.</p>

<p>The planned headset will thrust Apple into an emerging competition to define the future of mixed reality. Microsoft, Google and Facebook’s parent company, Meta, are in various stages of developing software and hardware to create environments where 3D digital images and the physical world coexist.</p>

<p>Apple’s development of virtual-reality content and software tools is central to creating experiences that give its future headset purpose. Its last major new product, the Apple Watch, was launched with about 3,000 apps but struggled to take off because tech reviewers said few of those apps were useful. Similar shortcomings have dogged Meta’s Quest virtual-reality headset, which surpassed 10 million sales last year, because many view it as a gaming device.</p>

<p>From its original Macintosh to its iPad, Apple has pursued products that attract a broad swath of potential customers and have an array of uses. It sold an estimated 240 million iPhones last year, accounting for about half of its $366 billion in total sales. To make the headset worthwhile, analysts said, it will need to have utilities that transcend the niche world of video games.</p>

<p>Apple CEO Tim Cook has been talking about the potential of augmented reality for years. In 2016, he told investors that the company was investing heavily in it and considered it a “great commercial opportunity.” Around that time, many employees on Apple’s campus were reading “Ready Player One,” a futuristic novel about virtual reality, and talking about the possibilities of creating Apple’s own mixed-reality world.</p>

<p>Apple hired an engineer from Dolby Technologies, Mike Rockwell, and tasked him with leading the effort. His early efforts to create an augmented-reality product were hobbled by weak computing power, two people familiar with the project said. Continuing challenges with its battery power have forced Apple to postpone its release until next year, those people said.</p>

<p>The augmented-reality initiative has been divisive inside Apple. At least two members of its industrial design team said they had left the company, in part, because they had some concerns about developing a product that might change the way people interact with one another. Such sensitivities have increased inside the company amid rising public concern about children’s screen time.</p>

<p>With Rockwell at the helm, the product would be one of the first to come out of Apple led by its engineering team rather than its co-founder Steve Jobs, who died in 2011, and its former design chief, Jony Ive, who left the company in 2019. The Apple Watch project was led by Ive and his designers, who defined how it looked, operated and was marketed.</p>

<p>Favreau's programming shows how Apple is trying to differentiate its product from Meta’s. It also illustrates how the company is tapping into the relationships it has cultivated in Hollywood since starting Apple TV+ in 2019.</p>

'GoodWill' ransomware: How it entraps victims with unusual demand

<p>Two days after Twitter's shareholders blocked the re-election of Elon Musk's ally Egon Durban, the company has said in a filing that will not accept his resignation from the board.</p>

<p>Outlining a shift by PlayStation away from just concentrating on single-player games exclusive to its platform, Ryan said more PC and mobile titles will be on offer in addition to live service games, which provide continuous updated play.</p>

<p>While PS4 and PS5 titles are expected to make up more than two-thirds of releases this year, PC and mobile titles will make up almost half of new games in 2025.</p>

<p>"The initiatives to broaden our audience... will have a fundamental effect on the shape of our game portfolio," Ryan said.</p>

<p>TAG said it has been tracking 30 surveillance vendors. "We assess with high confidence that these exploits were packaged by a single commercial surveillance company, Cytrox, and sold to different government-backed actors who used them in at least the three campaigns," Google said in its blog.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Where have the strikes been confirmed?</strong></p>

<p>Google's TAG team in a blog said: "Consistent with findings from CitizenLab, we assess likely government-backed actors purchasing these exploits are operating (at least) in Egypt, Armenia, Greece, Madagascar, Côte d’Ivoire, Serbia, Spain and Indonesia."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The blog informed that the hacking took the form of one-time links mimicking URL shortener services to the targeted Android users via email.</p>

<p>"We assess that these campaigns delivered ALIEN, a simple Android malware in charge of loading Predator, an Android implant described by CitizenLab in December 2021."</p>

<p>Google said tracking the commercial surveillance industry would require a "robust" approach which can be done through intelligence teams, network defenders, academic researchers and technology platforms.&nbsp;</p>
