As top executives of Twitter pack their bags in the wake of Elon Musk's takeover, there are reports that the micro-blogging site’s co-founder Jack Dorsey is testing another social network app rivalling the blue bird.

According to People, a week before Musk finalised his acquisition deal, the 45-year-old former CEO released a press release stating that he is seeking beta testers for his decentralized social app Bluesky.

"The next step is to&nbsp;start testing the protocol. Distributed protocol development is a tricky process," the company shared in a news release last Tuesday.

"It requires coordination from many parties once a network is deployed, so we're going to start in private beta to iron out issues."

"As we beta test, we'll continue to iterate on the protocol specs and share details about how it works. When it's ready, we'll move to the open beta," the company’s statement said, sharing a link to sign up for the&nbsp;beta test's waitlist.

In the press release, the company said that the new app will use an Authenticated Transfer Protocol&nbsp;(AT Protocol), which is a federated social network run by multiple sites instead of a single site.

"The word 'Bluesky' evokes a wide-open space of possibility. It was the original name for this project before it took shape, and continues to be the name of our company," the release stated. "We're calling the application we're building Bluesky because it will be a portal to the world of possibility on top of the AT Protocol," it said.

Last week, Dorsey in his Twitter post said that Bluesky will act as "a competitor to any company trying to own the underlying fundamentals for social media or the data of the people using it"

CNBC citing sources said that both of them will not be returning, with Washington Post reporting that Vijaya Gadde, the head of legal policy, trust, and safety who made the decision to ban Trump's account, was also fired.

The 51-year-old billionaire had until October 28 to complete his $44 billion acquisition deal or risk facing a trial in November.

In April, Musk had expressed interest to buy the microblogging site, but later retracted his offer in May.

He then again changed his mind after Twitter took legal action to force Musk to complete the deal.

Musk has been meeting with Twitter employees this week and is&nbsp;expected to address them on Friday.

Meanwhile, the social media platform's shares have been suspended from trading on Friday,&nbsp;according to the New York Stock Exchange's website.

Messaging service WhatsApp has&nbsp;not been working since 12:07 PM (IST) on Tuesday and the operations resumed after more than two hours. According to Indian Express, the outage was confirmed by the online tool Down Detector, and by 1 PM (IST), the website had thousands of complaints from users living in India.&nbsp;

Similar reports were also coming from various parts of the world with Twitter users from the United Kingdom, Turkey and Italy also taking to other social media platforms to report the outage.&nbsp;

"We're aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we're working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible," said a spokesperson of the parent company Meta.&nbsp;

WhatsApp suffers massive global outage that lasted for more than two hours

Google has reportedly removed 16 apps from Play Store as they were found to be draining the battery very fast&nbsp;and consuming a lot of data. The apps were also committing ad fraud by impersonating a user.

The latest cost-cutting measure taken by the online retail giant Amazon is the closure of a company that has been selling fabrics for close to 30 years.

Fabric.com announced its decision to stop selling goods on its website and advised users to make purchases on Amazon in its place. The final day for clients to place orders on the fabric website is Thursday.

Amazon shuts online store fabric.com in cost-cutting move

On Monday, TikTok announced that it is raising the age limit for hosting livestreams on the platform and is also launching adult-only livestreams. The changes will be implemented starting November 23, and the users will have to be 18 years old or above to go live on the platform. Currently, the users have to be 16 or above to host a live stream.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the adult-only livestreams will reportedly be rolled out in the upcoming weeks as the date has not been specified by the platform. Previously the company had begun testing to restrict its livestreams to viewers who are 18 years and above.&nbsp;

The reports have also noted that the “adult-only” restriction will not allow users to broadcast adult content and the platform will still operate in line with their guidelines which prohibit “nudity, pornography, or sexually explicit content.”&nbsp;

The company in a blog post indicated, “We plan to introduce a new way for creators to choose if they’d prefer to only reach an adult audience in their LIVE.” It added, “For instance, perhaps a comedy routine is better suited for people over age 18. Or, a host may plan to talk about a difficult life experience and they would feel more comfortable knowing the conversation is limited to adults.”

This comes months after TikTok also&nbsp;wanted to identify and restrict content appropriate for younger and older teens versus adults and had indicated that they would ask the creators to specify which content is appropriate for a particular audience.&nbsp;

Another minor update to the live streaming feature is that the platform will also allow five other people in the multi-guest stream and they are also updating the app’s keyword filtering feature to send reminders for creators to moderate their comments, said reports.

This move also comes after a BBC report found that hundreds of accounts had been going live from Syrian refugee camps, with children begging for donations with the app’s live streaming tool, “We are deeply concerned by the information and allegations brought to us by the BBC, and have taken prompt and rigorous action.”&nbsp;

The report also alleged that the company has been taking a huge chunk of the money donated. The company has since refuted these allegations and said, “This type of content is not allowed on our platform, and we are further strengthening our global policies around exploitative begging.”

“They built the whole system in China. Unless they’re going to rebuild the system in the United States at great expense, sooner or later, when something goes wrong, there’s going to turn out to be only one engineer who knows how to fix it. And he or she is likely to be in China,” said Stewart Baker, a national security lawyer at Steptoe &amp; Johnson LLP. 
 
TikTok spokesperson Brooke Oberwetter refused to comment on the the company’s discussions with the US government, but said, “We are confident that we are on a path to fully satisfy all reasonable US national security concerns.”

Facebook, rechristened as Meta, is struggling with numbers, nearly a year after the rebranding, as per a report by Wall Street Journal. Horizon Worlds, a flagship product of Meta which attempted to provide a comprehensive Metaverse experience to the users, has faltered to take off. According to the publication, after the launch last year, Mark Zuckerberg-owned Meta had kept an ambitious target of having 500,000 monthly active users on board. However, the current number of users stands at a rather unflattering 200,000, thereby failing to meet internal performance expectations. While the user numbers being low is an alarming situation, what's more distressing is that those logging in to Horizon Worlds, did not return to the platform after the first month. The report states that only nine per cent of the free virtual reality online video game has been explored by at least 50 people while the majority of the Metaverse has been left relatively unexplored. Notably, Horizon Worlds was Zuckerberg's USP for the platform. In the game, individuals can pick an avatar and pop into the virtual space to interact with one another. To double down on his venture, Zuckerberg earlier this week launched the $1,500 Quest Pro VR which contains an advanced mobile Snapdragon computer chip. The attempt is to further drum up excitement around the product Meta has developed. Following the complaints, Meta was quick to acknowledge the error and said that it was working on rectifying the situation. However, no explanation was given about when the error happened.&nbsp;

"We're aware that some people are seeing inconsistent follower count on their Facebook profiles. We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologize for any inconvenience," a Meta spokesperson told PTI when asked about the problems faced by a number of users.&nbsp;

Meta Platforms unveiled its Quest Pro virtual and mixed reality headset on Tuesday, marking a milestone for chief executive Mark Zuckerberg's break into the higher-end market for extended reality computing devices.

The headset, introduced at Meta's annual Connect conference, will hit shelves on Oct. 25 at a price of $1,500, and will offer consumers a way to interact with virtual creations overlaid onto a full-colour view of the physical world around them.

The launch is an important step for Zuckerberg, who last year announced plans for the device — then called Project Cambria — at the same time that he changed his company's name from Facebook to Meta to signal his intention to refocus the social media giant into a company that operates a shared immersive computing experience known as the metaverse.

Zuckerberg has since poured billions of dollars into that vision. Reality Labs, the Meta unit responsible for bringing the metaverse to life, lost $10.2 billion in 2021 and has lost nearly $6 billion so far this year.

In a speech at the event, Zuckerberg, recorded partially in video and partially as an avatar, said he expects the blending of the physical and digital worlds to give rise to new uses for computing.

"You're going to see entirely new categories of things getting built," he said.

The Quest Pro features several upgrades over Meta's existing Quest 2 headset, which overwhelmingly dominates the consumer virtual reality market.

Most strikingly, it has outward-facing cameras that capture a sort of 3D livestream of the physical environment around a wearer, enabling mixed reality novelties like the ability to hang a virtual painting on a real-world wall or have a virtual ball bounce off a real table.

The Quest 2, by contrast, offers a more rudimentary grayscale version of this technology, called passthrough.

The Quest Pro feels lighter and slimmer than its predecessors, with thin pancake lenses and a relocated battery that sits at the back of the headset, distributing its weight more evenly while reducing overall bulk.

For fully immersive virtual reality, Meta has added tracking sensors to the Quest Pro that can replicate users' eye movements and facial expressions, creating a sense that avatars are making eye contact. 
 
PITCHING PRODUCTIVITY

Meta is pitching the Quest Pro as a productivity device, aimed at designers, architects and other creative professionals.

In addition to offering its own Horizon social and workspace platforms, the company has also made virtual versions of Microsoft Corp work products like Word, Outlook and Teams available, a partnership Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella joined Zuckerberg to announce.

Matthew Ball, a venture capitalist whose writings about the metaverse have drawn Zuckerberg's praise, said he considered such partnerships significant because they suggested the companies' commitment to interoperability, or the idea that different systems should connect with each another.

"There is a lot of skepticism in the market as to whether an interoperable and open metaverse is even possible, let alone likely," he said, noting that Microsoft and Meta compete on several products in the extended reality space.

At a preview of Quest Pro days before its launch, Meta gave reporters a glimpse of the type of user it had in mind for its productivity pitch by showcasing apps like Tribe XR, a virtual training environment for DJs.

Tribe XR is already available in virtual reality, but a demonstration showed how passthrough technology may enable DJs to use the app to play real-world gigs, as it means they can look out past their virtual equipment at actual partygoers.

Meta plans to sell the Quest Pro in consumer channels to start, while adding enterprise-level capabilities like mobile device management, authentication and premium support services next year, executives said at the press event.

They said the device is intended to complement rather than replace the entry-level Quest 2, which sells for $399.99.

For now, that means the Quest Pro stops short of enabling the complex commercial applications Meta has suggested it wants its metaverse technology to support.

The company is still working on a mixed reality experience for its Horizon Workrooms app that would make a person's avatar appear to be present in a real-world conference room with other users, which it is calling Magic Rooms.

It is also planning to add legs to its avatars, which are currently displayed from the waist up, Zuckerberg said.

Still, the Quest Pro's price point puts it well under the cost of existing enterprise-focused devices like Microsoft's Hololens 2, which was released for commercial use in 2019 and is already present in operating rooms and on factory floors.

An entry-level Hololens 2 sells for $3,500.

According to reports, people are supposedly getting these calls after answering one of the questions on the app.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the app has largely been dubbed as a failure because of its invite-only system which makes it impossible to join. Furthermore, reports claim there are no women who have signed up for the app.&nbsp;

One of the questions that people are asked while they are making their profile is a finish-the-sentence prompt which reads “January 6 was …”. This of course refers to the January 6 insurrection when Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol after his defeat in the 2020 presidential elections.&nbsp;

<h2>How often can passwords be cracked?</h2>

Two words answer is 'quite often'. The system successfully cracked around 86 per cent of the passwords when a thermal image was clicked within 20 seconds of typing in the secret code or password.

It even successfully cracked long passwords of around 16 characters. However, the success rate for this was lower at 67 per cent.

Shorter passwords had a higher success rate. Up to 12 characters were guessed right on 82 per cent of the tries, eight characters were cracked right on 93 per cent of attempts and six character codes were successfully worked out 100 per cent.

When the time was increased by 10 seconds and the thermal image was clicked in around 30 seconds the success rate dropped to 76 per cent and a further drop to 62 per cent was seen at 60 seconds of typing.

<h2>How does it work?</h2>

When we touch an object a small part of our body heat is transferred via conduction. Thermal images detect this heat and these areas show up a little bit brighter in the picture.

If a user types in his/her password and leaves the device unguarded, any passerby equipped with a thermal camera can capture an image that reveals the heat signature. This 'thermal attack'&nbsp;can then give away your passwords, codes etc.

It even successfully cracked long passwords of around 16 characters. However, the success rate for this was lower at 67 per cent. Shorter passwords had a higher success rate. Up to 12 characters were guessed right on 82 per cent of the tries, eight characters were cracked right on 93 per cent of attempts and six character codes were successfully worked out 100 per cent. When the time was increased by 10 seconds and the thermal image was clicked in around 30 seconds the success rate dropped to 76 per cent and a further drop to 62 per cent was seen at 60 seconds of typing. The report details a recent "roller coaster ride" of an incident at an amusement park in Cincinnati.&nbsp;

A woman's iPhone 14 alerted the authorities of a crash as she enjoyed a ride. The phone's new car-crash detection was triggered as she "enjoyed getting hoisted 109 feet in the air and whipped around at over 50 mph".

The phone placed a 911 call to the Warren County Communications Center with an automated voice message which said “The owner of this iPhone was in a severe car crash and is not responding to their phone.”

It also picked up the background audio from the amusement park; hoots, cheers, music and adrenaline-fueled people having fun.

As per the 911 report, an emergency response team was sent to the location but they couldn't locate any emergency. The iPhone user realised the whole thing and called the emergency services back to tell them that she is okay. Ironically she reassured them that she hasn't been in a car crash from the line for 'bumper cars'.

While the incident is in a certain way hilarious, it also raises the question of how dependable the feature is. There would be nothing funny about receiving an alert that your loved one has been in a crash, only to discover that they were having fun at a fair or amusement park and just forgot to answer their phone.

This is not to say that the emergency call is placed undetected by the user. The feature uses a combination of sensor data to assess a potential crash. If detected, it shows a message on the screen for ten seconds, following which a ten-second countdown happens, accompanied by an alarm.&nbsp;

Only after this countdown, emergency services are contacted. A message is also sent to your emergency contact.

However, as the incident demonstrates you sometimes forget to check your phone.

The false alarms can be scary and they will grow in number as more people buy the new model of iPhone. It has to be acknowledged that technology can make mistakes, for it the difference between a deadly crash and a thrilling ride might be non-existent.

In spite of that, there have already been multiple cases where the feature was literally a lifesaver, in one it alerted authorities to a deadly accident where a car crashed into a tree. The crash had no witnesses and without the alert, the user might have perished.

Even if scary or irritating this feature has saved lives and will continue to do so, one can only hope that Apple will soon launch an update fixing this "bug".

Meta’s researchers said that on most occasions, the malicious apps asked the user to log into their Facebook account to continue and in the process, stole the username and password information.

The number of such apps were estimated to be somewhere around 400 and Meta spokesperson Gabby Curtis confirmed said that the company is trying to ascertain the number of affected users.

“This is a highly adversarial space and while our industry peers work to detect and remove malicious software, some of these apps evade detection and make it onto legitimate app stores,” wrote Meta’s Threat Disruption Director David Agranovich in the company’s official blog.

Meta has already reached out to both Apple and Google to de-list the apps from their online stores and have provided them with a complete report of their findings. The company has also reached out to the potentially affected users to guide them on how to protect their data and Agranovich said that as the activity did not occur on Meta systems, it will be easier for the company to take note of the issues.

A French court on Thursday substantially lowered a fine against iPhone maker&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;Inc for alleged anti-competitive behaviour to 372 million euros ($366.31 million) from 1.1 billion euros previously, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The original fine had been imposed by France's antitrust watchdog in 2020 for what it described as&nbsp;Apple's anti-competitive behaviour towards its distribution and retail network.

At the time, it was the biggest fine levied by the antitrust regulator, which said&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;imposed prices on retail premium resellers so that the prices were aligned with those charged by the California firm in its own shops, or on the internet.

The appeals court backed the antitrust watchdog's charge that&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;abused the retailers' economic dependency on the company but tossed the fixed-pricing charge, one of the two sources said.

It also reduced the time scope of the charge of an alleged restriction of the wholesalers' clientele, the same source said.

The court also decided to significantly lower the rate applied to calculate the overall fine, the source added.

The French antitrust authority had used a high rate in 2020 given the size and financial firepower of&nbsp;Apple, the source said.

Apple&nbsp;said it would appeal the decision. It did not mention the amount of the fine issued by the court.

"While the court correctly reversed part of the French Competition Authority's decision, we believe it should be overturned in full and plan to appeal," the US&nbsp;company said in a statement sent to Reuters.

"The decision relates to practices from more than a decade ago that even the (French authority) recognised are no longer in use."

A spokesperson for the appeals court declined to comment on the exact content of the decision but confirmed the court "partially confirmed" the antitrust watchdog's decision.

What is ‘everything app’

The concept of an everything app, often referred to as a “super app,” is novel in the US, whereas in Asia, it is massively popular, and tech companies across the world have tried to emulate it.

A super app has been described as a platform that can offer various services under one umbrella, leading many to term it as the Swiss army knife of apps, which can offer a range of component tools (mini-apps) that the user can use and remove as needed.

China and Southeast Asia have been sort of a pivot in churning out these ‘super apps’

WeChat, GoJek, and Grab are some that leveraged the opportunity of customer traffic on their platforms that originally came for social media and communication by offering additional services leading to increased revenue realisations.

In India, the Tata Group is planning to come up&nbsp;with its own super app.

Reliance Industries, under its Jio umbrella, is amalgamating its various services such as shopping, content streaming, groceries, payments, cloud services, etc.

Whereas, Paytm, which initially started out as a digital payments company, has been offering other services like ticket bookings, games, online shopping, banking, consumer finance, etc.

India’s homegrown Flipkart Group has tied up its payments app PhonePe with companies such as Ola Cabs, Swiggy, Grofers, AJio, Decathlon,&nbsp;Delhi&nbsp;Metro, booking.com, etc to offer these services from within its own app.

Snap Inc-owned Snapchat earlier introduced peer-to-peer payments called Snapcash, but ended the feature in 2018.

It also made a push into mobile gaming and recently ended that venture as part of cost-cutting plans.

However, once you edit the tweet it will show a timestamp of what time was the tweet edited and people reading the tweet can tap the label to view the edit history of the tweet. The users will be able to see if the tweet is edited or not by the tiny pencil icon next to the timestamp.&nbsp;

Twitter prior to the release told TechCrunch that they will observe how people use the edit button based on which they can change the number of edits available in the approved timeframe. They also indicated it will make this feature available to the paid users first to gather feedback based on which they can tune functionality accordingly.&nbsp;

“For context, the time limit and version history play an important role here. They protect the integrity of the conversation and create a publicly accessible record of what was said”, Twitter wrote on their blog. They made the announcement of the feature rolling out on the platform late yesterday with the following tweet.&nbsp;

Twitter releases edit feature for Blue subscribers in Australia, Canada and New Zealand

China has successfully conducted the test of a new powerful engine for its super heavy-lift rocket for its lunar missions.

According to reports, the engine is being designed to power the third stage of China’s planned Long March 9 —a super heavy-lift rocket which is being designed for space missions such as a crewed lunar landing and exploration on Mars.

On Saturday, the Beijing Astronautics Experiment Institute of Technology (BAEIT) announced that the first prototype of the 25-tonne YF-79 rocket engine overcame technical difficulties.

BAEIT is a unit of the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the country’s space programme which developed the closed-cycle rocket engine.

“Three ground tests of the new hydrogen-oxygen engine were successfully completed on Friday,” said BAEIT in a statement.

Over the past week, the agency held 12 ignition tests on the new engine, as well as a high-thrust hydrogen-oxygen engine and an orbital control engine, BAEIT said without giving further details.

“Our teams … shortened the test cycles and increased test capacity, and achieved consecutive successes,” it said in a statement on its WeChat social media account, the South China Morning Post reported.

According to CASC, the engine uses liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen for propellant and can generate 25 tons of thrust, making it one of the most powerful such engines ever made.

The Long March 9 launch vehicle is currently expected to have its test flight by 2030. It is comparable to NASA's iconic Saturn V or the larger versions of the American space agency's huge new deep-space rocket, the&nbsp;Space Launch System.
