A new attack is affecting SMS messaging with the users never finding out. The attack, uncovered by Motherboard, uses text-messaging management services to redirect messages to hackers from the user.

These services are&nbsp;used by businesses, but now hackers are capitalising on the service’s loopholes. The service essentially provides the hackers access to everything in your texts, ranging from two-factor authentication codes, login links, and one-time passwords that are usually delivered via SMS.

As if that was not enough to scare users, the hackers can also respond to messages on your behalf without you even finding out.

It is common for companies to not tell the user that their messages are being redirected to someone else. And the worst part of it all? Anybody can deploy the attack, and it costs less than $16, as uncovered by a Motherboard reporter, Joseph Cox, who was able to successfully hack his own phone using the exploits already in place within the industry.

Not many companies are doing anything, or worse - lack awareness about the loophole which allows such attacks to continue unabated.

It’s not the attack which could compromise one’s data, but the content of our private SMSs - a service now largely used just for authentication purposes, as users have moved on to app-based messaging like WhatsApp and Telegram.

SMSing has become largely obsolete for private conversations, but could still be exploited to access important links, for companies still using SMSs to send password reset links - ranging from banks to social media companies. In addition, many also send login links on SMS.

The attacker can easily click on these links to change passwords of your important accounts and services. Easiest way to avoid being hacked? Stop using SMS services for anything security-related.

We've all wasted countless precious minutes of our lives tinkering with Google Earth. From trying to find our homes to checking how famous tourist destinations looked from space, we've done it all. But now Google Earth is bringing a function that is being touted to be a 'time machine'. As per reports, the feature will be added to Google Earth's Android app.

Google Earth shows how an area looks now. But with the new feature, you would be able to check how the same area looked in past. The feature is also reported to have a timelapse function that will give us a cool view of how changes took place.

By the looks of it, this function may come in handy for purposes more than just plain time kill. Urban planners and students alike will be able to look at a particular area to get better idea of cities. Citizens will freely be able to check how their cities are evolving and will be able to keep a check on authorities if they choose to.

News reports have mentioned that the feature has been rolled out for San Francisco. But if you are a tech junkie, you can try this:&nbsp;

Geek speak&nbsp;

If you have a rooted phone, toggling with experimental preference menu by either modifying preference file of the app with a root explorer or preference-editing app may help you gain access to this function. Tinkering with Termux commands may help too.

But after all, it is highly recommended that you should wait for this function to be officially and legally available.

The encrypted messaging app Signal, recommended by Tesla's Elon Musk, appeared to have been blocked in China on Tuesday, closing off one of the last US social media platforms still freely available in the country.

Users of the free app, which has surged in popularity globally after rising privacy concerns, were unable to access it without a virtual private network (VPN).

China has deployed a vast and sophisticated system to scrub the internet of dissent and prevent citizens from accessing international social networking platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, in what is known as the "Great Firewall".

Signal's website has been banned since at least March 15, according to the GreatFire.org website which tracks online censorship in China, although the app remains available on China's App Store.

The app was already unavailable on third-party Android stores in China, where Google services are largely blocked.

On several occasions, the app had previously stopped working in China without VPN with no reason given, only for usage to resume.

Signal&nbsp;saw a surge in downloads worldwide after January 6 when WhatsApp updated its privacy terms, reserving the right to share user data, including location and phone number, with its parent Facebook Inc and units such as Instagram and Messenger.

Signal&nbsp;had been downloaded close to 510,000 times on iOS in China, and has been downloaded 100 million times worldwide on the App Store and Google Play combined, according to data company Sensor Tower.

The WhatsApp policy update, later delayed,&nbsp;concerned how merchants using WhatsApp to chat with customers can share data with Facebook, which could use the information for targeted ads, according to the social network.

Signal has stopped working without a VPN occasionally before, although service resumed afterwards.

Co-founder of GreatFire.org Martin Johnson said&nbsp;that its data showed that the app was briefly unavailable in the App Store in&nbsp;2019.

Last month China closed down the Clubhouse app in China, an audio platform which boomed briefly in the country for uncensored discussion of taboo topics.

Electric carmaker Tesla added "Technoking&nbsp;of Tesla" to billionaire Chief Executive Elon Musk's list of official titles on Monday in a formal regulatory filing

The company also added the title&nbsp;"Master of Coin" for&nbsp;finance chief Zachary Kirkhorn it said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The electric-car maker did not elaborate on the reasons for the cryptic new titles in a pair of statements that also said President of Automotive Jerome Guillen had moved to the role of President for Tesla Heavy Trucking, effective March 11.

However, "Elon and Zach will also maintain their respective positions as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer," the filing stated.

Last month, Tesla revealed it had purchased $1.5 billion of bitcoin and would soon accept it as a form of payment for cars, sending the price of the world's most popular cryptocurrency soaring.

Musk's recent promotion of dogecoin on Twitter has also lifted the price of that cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin hit new highs of near $62,000 over the weekend but retreated around 5% early in the European day on Monday.

Norm-shattering entrepreneur Musk, who has more than 41 million followers on Twitter and a fortune now estimated at more than $180 billion, has had frequent conflicts with regulators at the SEC and is not shy about tweaking them on social media.

In 2018, the SEC charged Musk with fraud, slapped him with a $20 million fine and demanded he step down as Tesla chairman after he tweeted out a plan to take the company private.

If you think the 'incognito' mode in your <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/google">Google</a> browser is a safe place to search, you might want to close all the tabs.

It has been revealed that Google secretly scoops out users' data, even in the incognito mode, defying the basic idea of this model.

This was revealed in a lawsuit against Google's parent organisation, Alphabet Inc., by a few consumers who alleged that even if they turn off the option of data collection in Google Chrome, other Google tools still end up collecting personal information and activities of the users.

Following this case, Alphabet Inc. had filed a request to throw out the case, however, the request was denied by a federal judge.

"The court concludes that Google did not notify users that Google engages in the alleged data collection while the user is in private browsing mode," California District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose's ruling read.

These allegations have been denied by Google. "We strongly dispute these claims and we will defend ourselves vigorously against them," &nbsp;Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said in an emailed statement. The complaint was filed by three users of Google who alleged that Google continues a "pervasive data tracking business" even in incognito mode.&nbsp;

However, Google has also issued a clarification stating that the incognito mode is not a synonym of invisible.

"I assume it’s in Apple’s interest to have everyone using an iPhone, I mean, obviously, it is," WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart started his explanation.&nbsp;

Citing Apple's messaging service, Cathcart said the iMessage experience is better if everyone else has an iPhone, and therefore, Apple has been manipulating the users.

"And you look at a place like the US, most people have an iPhone, and the messaging experience works better on iMessage if everyone else has an iPhone."

Leading his point he explained that he feels WhatsApp has been purposely downplayed by Apple. "It's certainly in their strategic interest that people not use something like WhatsApp because they want people to not use an Android phone," he explained.

"If people switch to something like WhatsApp or another service it’s easier for their friends to go back and forth between an iPhone or an Android," he said.

Talking about the privacy labels of Apple, Cathcart said he believes WhatsApp directly competes with iMessage — which, he believes, is more popular in the US.

Dishing out on Apple, he also revealed that he uses an Android phone, even though he has used an iPhone in the past.&nbsp;

"Well, I use an Android because if you look at WhatsApp’s user base, we are very Android heavy. I also use an iPad, I’ve used iPhones for many years, but I really want to actually use the product in the way most people are using it, so I use an Android. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement, which recently stepped up cross-border missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, has in the past threatened to launch strikes on the UAE.

We live in a world with on-demand entertainment now. There's always a song available to soothe our nerves or to complement our 'I feel good' vibe. But there was a time, not too long ago, when all we had was a cassette and had to patiently wait till our favourite song (finally) played. The icon of that nostalgic era, the man who ushered it all, resides now in heaven. Lou Ottens, who invented the cassette and pioneered the CD has passed away. He was 94

As per reports, Ottens passed away on March 6 in Duizel, Netherlands. His daughter has been quoted in news reports as saying that he passed away at an elder care center. The exact cause of his passing hasn't yet been made public.

Ottens and his team developed audio cassette tape in the early 60s. He was head of Philips' product department at the time. After they presented their creation at Berlin Radio electronics fair (1963) the invention changed how everyone experienced music.

Ottens' seemingly small invention led to a revolution. The compact and cheaper device (the cassette) meant that music was no longer restricted to those who could afford. Mass production of audio cassettes meant that music was democratised and even a layman had access to it. Billions of cassettes were sold

Ottens also spearheaded another invention, that of Compact Discs or CDs. He was part of the joint team of Philips and Sony that created the CD.

CDs are relevant till now and audio cassettes had a strong presence till the early 2000s. Mixtapes wwas&nbsp;the word for those who wanted to create custom music collection.

Ottens,&nbsp;though inventor of cassettes was well in tune with the trends decades after his invention.

In 2013, he told Time magazine that cassettes were "history"

"I like when something new comes.” he was quoted as saying.

Microsoft-owned social network LinkedIn has halted new member sign-ups for its service in China while it reviews its compliance with local laws, the company said in a statement.

The careers-focused site has had a Chinese-language presence since 2014, when it decided to expand by agreeing to stick to strict censorship laws, and now has over 50 million users in the country.

It is one of few international tech platforms to enjoy access to China, where all subjects considered politically sensitive are censored in the name of stability and internet giants are urged to block unwanted content online.

"We're a global platform with an obligation to respect the laws that apply to us, including adhering to Chinese government regulations for our localized version of LinkedIn in China," the firm said in a notice dated Tuesday, without providing further details.

Tech giants who refuse to comply with the smothering censorship laws, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, have long been blocked behind the country's "Great Firewall".

Microsoft, however, operates LinkedIn by complying with the rules through a local joint venture.

LinkedIn has been criticised in China for pulling the professional accounts of dissidents -- which it later said was in error -- and scratching politically sensitive content from its pages.

It was not immediately clear which laws had prodded LinkedIn's suspension of sign-ups.

Last week, Microsoft said a state-sponsored hacking group operating out of China was exploiting previously unknown security flaws in its Exchange email services to steal data from business users -- although Beijing has previously hit back at US accusations of state-sponsored cybertheft.

A LinkedIn spokesperson told Bloomberg that the move was not related to the hack.

Microsoft's journey in China has not been entirely smooth-sailing, with the company's search engine Bing temporarily taken offline in 2019 -- prompting speculation it had been blocked by censors.

In 2014, Chinese competition authorities opened an anti-monopoly investigation against Microsoft and its Windows software, with inspectors raiding the group's offices in four Chinese cities, confiscating files and questioning employees.

A House Judiciary panel focused on antitrust will hear from three witnesses on Friday who represent a range of news organizations with concerns about how big tech platforms like Facebook and Alphabet`s Google increasingly dominate their industry.

The antitrust subcommittee leading the charge against tech platforms, and in this instance focusing on their relations with news organizations, will also hear from Microsoft President Brad Smith.

Social media companies use news to attract customers and have been accused by news publishers of not sharing enough advertising revenue with them.

Witnesses for Friday`s hearing include David Chavern, head of the News Media Alliance which includes News Corp and USA Today among others; Emily Barr, who represents the National Association of Broadcasters and Graham Media Group, which has 7 local TV stations; and Jonathan Schleuss, president of the NewsGuild-CWA, a union representing journalists, the statement said.

Bipartisan members of Congress are expected to introduce a bill in the near future that will make it easier for smaller news organizations to negotiate better deals with Big Tech platforms and increase their revenues.

American microblogging and social networking service Twitter is working on a `big overhaul` of its TweetDeck platform, which lets users arrange lists and feeds into easy-to-read vertical rows.

The company plans to share more details about the project publicly later this year, product chief Kayvon Beykpour said in an interview with The Verge on Tuesday.

TweetDeck, an alternative Twitter platform owned by the social networking service, offers a number of different features, such as accessing multiple timelines in columns and scheduling tweets.

TweetDeck has not received any significant updates in the last 10 years. The platform hasn`t seen many changes in the way of design or major feature updates in years.

The app launched nearly 12 years ago and was acquired by Twitter in 2011, and it is more or less still the same vertical grid viewer for your various Twitter feeds it started as. Mostly, Twitter has ported over new functions added to its main website and mobile apps while keeping the core TweetDeck design relatively static.

Beykpour and the product team recognise that they haven`t "given TweetDeck a lot of love recently," and they are actively working on a new TweetDeck they plan to show off later this year.

The upcoming changes to the platform are a part of a broader push to improve Twitter`s developer tools and repair its relationship with app makers, with the latter being a longtime contention between Twitter and the broader software development community.

However, Beykpour did not specify whether the new TweetDeck will be released this year or simply previewed for the public. It is also unclear whether this new TweetDeck would feature a refreshed visual design, all-new features, or both. However, whatever form the new platform takes, it will be a breath of fresh air for TweetDeck`s longtime users.

A new report from The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) has found that recommendations made by Instagram during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic was pushing people towards misinformation about the virus.

In addition, people were exposed to content sceptical of vaccinations, and material promoting anti-semitism.&nbsp; The watchdog claims that new accounts on the platform were exposed to misinformation through the app’s algorithms - the defining character of its “explore” section.

Most of the misleading information was shown to new users, many of whom followed leading faces of anti-vaccination movement.

The report by CCDH is titled “Malgorithm” which noted that volunteers in their study who followed 10 accounts with links to anti-vaccine sentiments were receiving recommendations for way more problematic content, like anti-semitic theories. The most common trope among these recommendations was about playing down the pandemic - urging people to stop wearing masks, and to not get tested.

CCDH’s Chief Executive told The Guardian that it was “beyond belief” how Instagram exposed people to conspiracy theories during a pandemic.

Facebook, the parent company on Instagram has responded to the allegations, calling the CCDH’s findings outdated and misleading.&nbsp;

The company also claimed that they have removed 12 million posts with misleading information about COVID-19 and vaccines, while highlighting how the CCDH’s research uses a sample size of just 104 posts. “We share the goal of reducing misinformation”, the company said.

Over the last few months, social media giants are facing increased scrutiny from governments around the world for the role companies play in limiting misinformation, which in turn affects how individuals behave and the choices they make in the real world - which have more far-reaching implications during a pandemic.

A new report from The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) has found that recommendations made by Instagram during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic was pushing people towards misinformation about the virus. In addition, people were exposed to content sceptical of vaccinations, and material promoting anti-semitism. The watchdog claims that new accounts on the platform were exposed to misinformation through the app’s algorithms - the defining character of its “explore” section. Most of the misleading information was shown to new users, many of whom followed leading faces of anti-vaccination movement. Instagram drove new users to fake news, conspiracy theories during peak of pandemic: Report

Short&nbsp;video sharing app&nbsp;TikTok and its Chinese version&nbsp;its competitor&nbsp;Douyin have become the world's most downloaded non-gaming apps in February.&nbsp;

The apps also&nbsp;remained top-grossing apps for the eleventh consecutive month, according to mobile app data analysis firm Sensor Tower.

Approximately 79 per cent of TikTok’s revenue was from Douyin in China, followed by 8 per cent from the United States and 3 per cent from Turkey.&nbsp;

YouTube&nbsp;was the second highest-earning non-gaming app worldwide for February 2021 with more than $82 million in gross revenue, which represented 23 percent year-over-year growth from February 2020

Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok is famed for trendy and typically urban influencers.

Rapidly growing ByteDance, the owner of TikTok and the similar Chinese short video platform&nbsp;Douyin, has made sizeable inroads into business areas Tencent holds dear - including ads, gaming, live streaming, social media and office software.

In 2018, ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming traded barbs with Tencent founder Pony Ma, accusing Tencent of blocking and copying&nbsp;Douyin, and the feud has since escalated into a volley of lawsuits.

That includes a suit from&nbsp;Douyin&nbsp;last week accusing Tencent of monopolistic behaviour. Tencent said the claims were false, accused&nbsp;Douyin&nbsp;of illegally gaining user information and vowed to file more suits against ByteDance.

Its Beijing-based rival ByteDance spent most of last year battling a potential US ban on TikTok after then-president Donald Trump raised national security concerns about the app.

The White House on Sunday urged computer network operators to take further steps to gauge whether their systems were targeted amid a hack of Microsoft Corp's Outlook email program, saying a recent software patch still left serious vulnerabilities.

"This is an active threat still developing and we urge network operators to take it very seriously," a White House official said, adding that top U.S. security officials were working to decide what next steps to take following the breach.

CNN on Sunday separately reported the Biden administration was forming a task force to address the hack. The White House official, in a statement, said the administration was making "a whole of government response."

While Microsoft released a patch last week to shore up flaws in its email software, the remedy still leaves open a so-called back door that can allow access to compromised servers and perpetuating further attacks by others.

"We can’t stress enough that patching and mitigation is not remediation if the servers have already been compromised, and it is essential that any organization with a vulnerable server take measures to determine if they were already targeted," the White House official said.

Already, a source told Reuters more than 20,000 US&nbsp;organizations had been compromised by the hack, which Microsoft has blamed on China, although Beijing denies any role.

The back channels for remote access can impact credit unions, town governments and small business, and have left U.S. officials scrambling to reach victims, with the FBI on Sunday urging them to contact the law enforcement agency.

Those affected appear to host Web versions of Microsoft`s email program Outlook on their own machines instead of cloud providers, possibly sparing many major companies and federal government agencies, records from the investigation suggest.

A Microsoft representative on Sunday said it was working with the government and others to help guide customers, and the company urged impacted clients to apply software updates as soon as possible.

Neither the company nor the White House has specified the scale of the hack. Microsoft initially said it was limited, but the White House last week expressed concern about the potential for "a large number of victims."

So far, only a small percentage of infected networks have been compromised through the back door, the source previously told Reuters, but more attacks are expected.

In addition to Tel Aviv, a report published in Calcalist Tech claimed that Tesla will set up more such charging stations in Haifa, Eilat, and Be'er Sheva. The report also estimated that a Supercharging station will show up in the city of Eilat during the second quarter of 2021. A station would also be set up in Be'er Sheva.

Tesla has not yet revealed the specifications of charging stations it intends to set up in the country.

What are Tesla's plans for India?

Elon Musk-led Tesla has registered a subsidiary company in Bengaluru as it prepares to create a much-awaited manufacturing plant and R&amp;D unit in India.

The company, registered as Tesla Motors India &amp; Energy Pvt Ltd, has named three directors as part of its team in the country, Vaibhav Taneja, Venkatrangam Sreeram and David Jon Feinstein.

Alphabet Inc's&nbsp;Google has unveiled a&nbsp;$25 million global grant to non-profits and social enterprises globally, including in India, that are working on empowering girls and women.

The company, which has committed support of one million rural women entrepreneurs in India, also stated that its Internet Saathi digital literacy training programme has benefitted over 30 million women across the country.

Google's&nbsp;new Impact Challenge, a philanthropic initiative was unveiled on International Women`s Day by the company's CEO&nbsp;Sundar Pichai.

Google.org, the philanthropic arm of the technology giant, is aimed at addressing systemic barriers and inequities so that women have access to economic equality, the opportunity to build financial independence, and pursue entrepreneurism, said Google chief executive Sundar Pichai at a virtual event.

"We are announcing a new commitment to allow 1 million women in the rural villages to become entrepreneurs, through business tutorials, tools, and mentorship," he added.

"In India, in the past few years, we have invested more than USD 40 million alongside the entrepreneurs, the innovators, the non-profits who are doing amazing work. We announced another million-dollar initiative building on that work, in particular, to help to acquire&nbsp;digital skills to those who are most vulnerable, including women," Jacquelline Fuller, Vice President at Google and President of Google.Org, said in a virtual briefing.

She added that one of the first initiatives under that effort is led by the NASSCOM Foundation, wherein the organisation is getting a $500,000 grant from Google.Org to support one lakh women agricultural workers.

"Whatever these teams need, we are going to be alongside them and help carry out their vision," said Jacquelline Fuller, President of Google.org, at the event.

The company said it will accept applications from teams worldwide until April 9.

Fuller also announced that Google.org is going to invest an additional $1 million to help underserved women in India. Even as India is the world`s second-largest internet market, women make up a small percentage of online users in the country.

Four of 10 internet users in rural India are now women, said Google, up from one in 10 in 2015. The company, citing its own research, said the Internet Saathi program benefited more than 30 million women in India and that it`s now concluding the program to focus on other efforts to continue this mission.

Over 20,000 United States organisations have been compromised in the aftermath of an attack on Microsoft's email software.

According to media reports, the hack has affected more than the download from SolarWinds Corp, which witnessed a massive hack in December 2020.&nbsp;Reuters cited a person familiar with the US government's response on Friday as saying that the organisations suffered after a back door was installed, capitalising on pre-existing flaws in the software.

In addition, the hack has affected thousands of organisations across Asia and Europe. Even then, despite emergency patches, the hacks continue to plague the company. Initially, Microsoft claimed that the hacks consisted of "limited and targeted attacks", but did not comment on the intensity of the issue.

It added, "impacted customers should contact our support teams for additional help and resources." A scan of the connected devices showed that only 10 per cent of the vulnerable had installed the patches by Friday.

Over the years, many countries including the United States have accused China of overseeing cyber espionage activities, something Chinese authorities continue to deny. &nbsp;Even before Microsoft officially acknowledged the hack, the activities of hackers had begun to garner attention from analysts in the cybersecurity community.

Mike McLellan, the director of intelligence for Dell Technologies Inc's Secureworks, was cited by Reuters as saying that they witnessed a spike in activity on Exchange servers over Sunday. Even at that firm, 10 customers have been affected. According to McLellan, hacking activity had gone up with focus on seeding malicious software, which could also highlight potential intrusions that could infect Microsoft's networks.

According to Microsoft, the targets of the Chinese hackers included researchers for infectious diseases, education institutions, defence contractors, policy think tanks, and NGOs.

Over 20,000 US organisations affected by China's Microsoft hack: Reports

Twitter's top boss Jack Dorsey recently listed the first-ever Tweet on the platform for sale. The Tweet, posted by Dorsey himself, said the following - ''just setting up my twttr'' and is being sold as a unique digital signature on a website that sells Tweets as "non-fungible tokens" (NFTs).

Dorsey pushed out the Tweet in March, 2006. Reuters reported that by Friday, he had received offers going as high as $88,888.88 just minutes after Dorsey posted a link of the listing, which was posted on a tweets marketplace called "Valuables by Cent".

Based on old offers already in place, many believe that the tweet was put up for sale in December 2020, with the listing gaining traction on Friday after Dorsey tweeted about the same.

NFTs are digital files that basically serve as digital signatures to ascertain ownership of pictures, videos, and other media on the web. The 15-year-old tweet by Dorsey is one of the platform's most famous tweets ever, and could attract high prices by bidders. On Saturday, the highest bid stood at $100,000.

Valuables by Cent was launched three months ago and compares buying tweets to buying an autographed baseball card.

"There is only one unique signed version of the tweet, and if the creator agrees to sell, you can own it forever", the company was cited as saying by Reuters.

After buying the tweet, the bidder receives an autographed digital certificate which is signed using cryptography, and also includes metadata of the original tweet, the company claims on its website.

Regardless of who the Tweet is sold to, it will continue to appear on the website.

Twitter's Jack Dorsey auctions first ever Tweet!

Britain's competition regulator said on Thursday it has opened an investigation into&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;Inc after complaints that the iPhone maker's terms and conditions for app developers are unfair and anti-competition.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced that it will examine Apple's position regarding the distribution of apps on its iPhones, iPads and other devices in Britain.

Payment policies related to&nbsp;Apple's App Store have for long drawn complaints from app developers as it requires them to use its payment system, which charges commissions of between 15 per cent and 30 per cent.

Apple said in response that it looked forward to working with the CMA to explain how its "guidelines for privacy, security and content have made the App Store a trusted marketplace for both consumers and developers".

The news however comes as Apple also faces a European Commission antitrust probe into its App Store, while the tech titan remains locked in a fierce US legal battle over the matter with Fortnite maker Epic Games.

The App Store is the only way for developers to distribute their apps for use on the US company's devices to the public.

"The CMA's investigation will consider whether Apple has a dominant position in connection with the distribution of apps on Apple devices in the UK," the UK regulator said in a statement.

Last year, the European Commission too had opened a probe into the iPhone maker over App Store commission fee.

Impact on choice and price

The CMA will also examine "whether Apple imposes unfair or anti-competitive terms on developers using the App Store, ultimately resulting in users having less choice or paying higher prices for apps and add-ons".

Apple must first approve all apps before they are placed on the App Store and developers must agree to certain terms.

"The probe has been prompted by the CMA's own work in the digital sector, as well as several developers reporting that Apple's terms and conditions are unfair and could break competition law," the regulator added.

The CMA said complaints highlighted also that Apple required "in-app" features, add-ons and upgrades to use the US group's payment system, rather than any alternative.

Apple charges developers a commission of up to 30 percent on initial app downloads and updates, the CMA said.

"Millions of us use apps every day to check the weather, play a game or order a takeaway," said CMA chief executive Andrea Coscelli.

"So complaints that Apple is using its market position to set terms which are unfair or may restrict competition and choice -- potentially causing customers to lose out when buying and using apps -- warrant careful scrutiny."

Fornite maker's Apple feud

News of the British probe comes two weeks after Epic Games -- best known for massively popular online role-playing hit Fortnite -- lodged a complaint against Apple with EU antitrust authorities, deepening its bitter feud with the iPhone-maker over its app store.

Apple and Epic have also been locked in a fierce battle over whether Apple's tight control of the App Store, and its 30-per cent cut of revenue, is abusive.

That dispute took a dramatic turn last August when Apple expelled Fortnite, one of the world's most popular games, from its App Store after Epic released an update that dodged revenue-sharing with the iPhone maker.

The global war over the App Store has also widened to Facebook, whose CEO Mark Zuckerberg accuses Apple of imposing rules for outside developers that it does not apply to its own services.
