For actor Aahana Kumra, shooting for Zee Theatre’s ‘Sir Sir Sarla’ was an immensely rewarding experience. She says, “The wonderful thing is that during the shoot, I did not lose the flow that I experience on stage while performing the play live. Thankfully the director just let us be and didn’t ask us to give multiple retakes. &nbsp;The whole experience turned out to be absolutely enjoyable.”

The teleplay is available on Dish TV D2H Rangmanch Active.

Aahana attended the first screening of the play at writer, director and actor Makarand Deshpande’s house and says, “Spending time at Mac sir’s place was a really nice way to relive the shoot especially because we have not been able to perform ‘Sir Sir Sarla’ on stage for a live audience due to the pandemic.”

‘Sir Sir Sarla’ explores the story of Professor Palekar and his student Sarla – the pretty, innocent young girl who seems smitten by her mentor – and Phanidhar who shares a love-hate relationship with the professor. The play dwells upon the bond between the students and their professor, which faces many vicissitudes. Secrets are revealed, accusations are hurled, and the three lives remain interwoven for many years to come.

The narrative is very unique and also relatable, says Aahana and adds, “Even though we were travelling extensively with the play before the pandemic, it took me a long time to understand Sarla. Then in cities like Lucknow and Bareilly, I actually met people who were like Keshav and Sarla. They would come to meet me after the show and say, “This is our story!” This was such a revelation and as an artist, I began to feel an added responsibility to portray Sarla in a real and organic way because so many women saw themselves in her.”

With time and experience, the play’s theme began to make more and more sense to her. As she says, “In a world full of hate and anxiety, this play is like a breath of fresh air. It really transports you to a place replete with love and nostalgia.”

'Churails' actor Nimra Bucha will now appear&nbsp;in Zee Theatre's&nbsp;‘Yaar Julahay',&nbsp;a series of dramatic readings featuring stories by writers from the subcontinent.

Nimra will be reading ‘Mughal Bachcha,’ a short story by Padma Shree awardee, novelist and writer, Ismat Chughtai.&nbsp;

‘Mughal Bachcha’ showcases Chughtai's frank and incisive writing style perfectly and deals with the theme of an ego clash that keeps the stunningly beautiful Gori Bi and her dark-skinned husband Kaale Miyan apart. &nbsp;The central conflict is created when Kaale Miyan, a proud Mughal lad is unable to set aside his ego and inferiority complex to lead a happy married life. Nimra immersed herself in Chughtai's narrative and says it was a treat to rediscover classic stories through ‘Yaar Julahay.’ &nbsp;

She adds, ”Today there is a paucity of time and so much is going on digitally that people do not engage with complex texts by stalwart writers. These dramatic readings are a perfect way to engage people who may not be drawn to the idea of opening a book. However, if they watch how a story comes to life, maybe they will go on to explore and read more stories on their own.”

The Zee Theatre teleplay, now showing on Airtel Spotlight,&nbsp;reveals how this one fleeting moment changes the lives of protagonists Sadanand and Meera forever and binds them inextricably to each other.&nbsp;

Well-known theatre, cinema and television actor Aditi Sharma says, “This is the story of two ordinary people to whom something extraordinary happens. I play Meera, a happy-go-lucky air-hostess who is forcibly kissed by Sadanand (played by Zeeshan Ayyub) in Janpath, in full public view. Meera is a small-town girl who is traumatised not just by the incident but by what she is subsequently put through during the police interrogations. Her own family blames her for chasing her ambitions in a big city like Delhi. To complicate matters even more, there is a political pressure upon her to pretend that nothing inappropriate happened to her. The play very incisively depicts the society we live in.”

Aditi was more than happy to fine-tune her performance with the help of seasoned director Ranjit Kapoor. She says, “I am so glad I got an opportunity to work with the absolutely amazing Ranjit sir. My co-star Zeeshan and the other actors closely associated with the Delhi theatre scene were also wonderful to work with.”

Zee Theatre’s contribution towards preserving and popularising theatre is unmatched, says Aditi and adds, “Digitising a play is an incredible way of archiving and disseminating theatrical content. Zee Theatre presents the acclaimed play ‘Aaj Rang Hai’ on March 28t&nbsp;at 2 pm and 8 pm on TataSky Theatre. Written and directed by Purva Naresh, one of the most powerful and influential female voices in contemporary Indian theatre, 'Aaj Rang Hai’ is a musical celebration of India’s syncretic cultural and artistic traditions through the poetry of Amir Khusrau.&nbsp;

A period drama set in post-partition India, Aaj Rang Hai invokes Khusrau’s all-embracing philosophy in an attempt to foster communal harmony in a society that is becoming increasingly separatist. &nbsp;

Purva says, "The play is set in post-partition India but there are many moments in the narrative that remind us of the headlines we see today. Love is the foundation of human existence, art, culture, of everything we are and do. The root word of humanity is human and we cannot be fully human without love. Hate does not just dehumanise the so-called ‘other’, it dehumanises us. What will remain of us if we only keep fighting?"

The concept of teleplay is not new to the end-user of today. While we must not have consumed as much number of teleplays as our parents once did with the advent and subsequent dominance of OTTs, streamers are now increasingly helping in broadcasting what was originally a theatrical play and what was meant to be consumed from across the stage.&nbsp;

Rajeev Siddhartha who was recently seen in Bobby Deol starrer web show titled ‘Aashram’ recently featured in Zee Theatre’s ‘Adhe Adhure’. Directed by Lillette Dubey, ‘Adhe Adhure’ is Mohan Rakesh's timeless classic and one of the most significant plays in the history of Indian theatre. It is the story of a middle-aged woman &nbsp;caught in her destiny and circumstances who tries to find fulfilment in &nbsp;relationships outside her marriage.

In conversation with WION, Rajeev Siddhartha spoke about being a part of this timeless classic, his growth as an actor and much more.&nbsp;

WION: What is ‘Adhe Adhure’ for you?

Rajeev: Adhe Adhure was my first big theatrical production in Mumbai. The writing was absolutely mind blowing and Mohan Rakesh as we all know is a genius. It was my good fortune to be a part of such a play with such an ensemble cast and it provided me with the tools that I needed. The learning has helped me as an actor in the years to come. &nbsp;

WION: Who is Ashok and what are his troubles?

Rajeev: Ashok is a 21-year-old unemployed youth who thinks his family doesn’t get him. He's a rebel who thinks he’s been left to deal with difficult cards in his life. He has a pure heart but the circumstances around him have made him an angry youth.&nbsp;

WION: How does it feel to give a contemporary twist to a timeless classic like this Mohan Rakesh’s piece?

Rajeev: Adhe Adhure is a classic so even if someone performs it a hundred years from now, it will retain its power. Mohan Rakesh was such a great observer of human nature that I feel in some way or another, with some intensity or another, such dynamics are present in almost every family. In that sense, everybody will relate to it and as long as humankind exists, there will be relationships between human beings and there will be some complexity in the dynamics.&nbsp;

WION: Lack of money and its subsets form an essential part of the theme of the teleplay. What is your take on class divide and privilege in the world that arises out of money?

Rajeev: Dissatisfaction in the play among the family members is not only because of money but it does play an important part. I feel dissatisfaction is basically inbuilt in us human beings and as long as people are trapped in thinking that joy and permanent happiness can only be found in external situations, circumstances and things, they will always be dissatisfied. Even if you get for instance, whatever you have dreamt of, or you get as much money as you dreamt of, you will be dissatisfied the next day because you would want more. That’s why I feel Mohan Rakesh was a genius writer to have recognised that and wrote a play like Adhe Adhure.

WION: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years as an actor?

Rajeev: I have always wanted to be a part of great projects, great scripts to work with good directors. So I am hoping that five years from now, I’ll be doing just that.

WION: You were recently seen in Aashram. What is your biggest takeaway from that show?&nbsp;

Rajeev: Working with a legend like Prakash Jha is in itself a learning experience and being a part of such a project on a grand scale was overwhelming. In most scenes, we had almost 100-200 actors at a time. Aashram is the biggest project of mine in terms of scale. The mere fact that I was a part of such a series, having that opportunity to work with such a great bunch of actors, on a great script was fulfilling.

WION: With more mediums opening up for actors, how do you feel about being in the industry at a time when major overhaul is taking place – in terms of diversified content, mediums?

Rajeev: This is a fantastic time to be a part of the industry and the creative field. Was it not for these platforms I think a lot of good quality work would have been undiscovered. It is also fantastic for the audience because even they get to see more quality work.&nbsp;

The play is about a five-member family embittered by destitution and Mohan Rakesh masterfully depicts how unmet needs can drive people to lose their empathy.

Rajeev Siddhartha who plays Ashok in the play says, "To me, Ashok's character basically represents the desire to break free. There is a lot of angst and anger in him. He is like any guy in his twenties who feels that the world cannot understand him. He cannot understand the world either and feels a lot of irritation towards his mother. He wants to be left alone to figure out things on his own. For me it was interesting to play this part because just around this time, I had left my investment banking job to become an actor. &nbsp;In that sense even I was rebelling against the conventional norms of the world. I used that angst within to play my character.”

About Mohan Rakesh's writing, he says, “I remember reading the play for the first time with the entire cast in director Lillete Dubey’s living room and the atmosphere was so charged. That’s when you realise the brilliance of Mohan Rakesh. He was a genius. His writing is sublime and if the writing is good, then you can build on that and create wonders. &nbsp;I feel the most timeless and outstanding aspect of the play is how relationships between the family members are captured. &nbsp;Every character is so well- layered and well sketched. Mohan Rakesh must have deeply observed relationships between different people and families to create such a masterpiece.”

The play is directed by Lillete Dubey. She also stars in the play along with veteran actor Mohan Agashe and Ira Dubey.

With a cross border teleplay ‘Gidh’ running on TV for the first time, Pakistani writer-director Kanwal Khoosat got talking to WION about the idea, its realisation and making intelligent art. She also spoke about producing Pakistan’s official entry to Oscars 2021, ‘Zindagi Tamasha’. Zee Theatre brought ‘Gidh’ to its Indian audience towards the end of 2020, a play revolving around two women protagonists bound together by their shared miseries of life in a patriarchal society. WION: Since Gidh means vulture in literal translation, what symbolic importance does the tenacity of the bird have with the teleplay? Kanwal: 'Gidh,' as a bird carries a lot of negative energy around its name. The traits of the bird are also sometimes considered analogous to a bad omen or bad energy but these are the very qualities that set it apart from other birds. In appearance too, a 'Gidh' is not as pleasing or as beautiful as other birds or is as colorful. However, when you look at the king vulture, it possesses the most vibrant and striking shades of the color palette. But whenever we think of a vulture, we only think of browns and greys and blacks. The same is the case with our story. On the surface level, the lives of Saleema and Salma, the way they dress up, talk about concepts and ideas seem to be very mundane and really dull and boring. But when you find more about them, you come to know that their lives are as interesting and as unique as a vulture itself. Whether we like it or not, it is what makes them stand apart from the rest of the crowd. Also, the way the story is told thrives on the narrative technique called 'deliberate ambiguity'. What begins to emerge are the qualities you associate with a vulture that flies low and then consumes the flesh of dead animals. 'Deliberate ambiguity' gives you many options to draw at the same time and takes you to horizons you have never explored. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it will give you at least two options to consider at any given point in time. So you may think that this is the answer to the questions in your mind and that you know or understand a certain character but then your own perception is defied at some point, giving you at least one more possibility or interpretation of the same text or sentiment that a character has portrayed. WION: How was the play conceptualized and how do you feel about the play being telecast on TV although it's not a new concept? Kanwal: Yes, televising a theatre play is not a new concept. It was practiced on our national TV channels in the 80s, the 90s as well as the early 2000s. It has been very nostalgic because making a teleplay gives me an opportunity to exercise the vocabulary that I had developed by watching those teleplays. Now, in my own little way, I got an opportunity to improve upon the format for a contemporary audience. Conceptualizing this play was the most enriching experience out of the three teleplays that I have produced for Zee Theatre. When I was working on the other plays, to be honest, I was struggling to reproduce the same experience that I had while performing them on stage as a live performance. I didn't really know what should go into a teleplay. Should it look like a recorded theatre experience? Or should it have a language of its own? I don't think I allowed myself a lot of space in this confusion. I thought my comfort lay in reproducing the staged experience but while working on 'Gidh,' I allowed myself space and distanced myself from how I approached 'Jhanjhar Di Panwaan Chhankaar' and 'Mushk.' I allowed myself to develop a vocabulary that involved the camera's gaze in the conceptualization and the visualization of the play. Kanwal: Sometimes in the mainstream media women are shown to be subjects or victims of the patriarchal system of our society. The two women in the play would look like they’d apparently not defy any of these notions. They look and talk like they are part and parcel of the same system and yet when you get to know them on a deeper level, and the story unfolds as they start narrating their own past to each other and how they have coped with their own emotional challenges and their social, familial, and economic limitations, you find that these women have taken charge of their own lives. They are not the subjects or victims of the system, be it patriarchy, consumerism, or capitalism. These are women who have been making their own decisions and also take the responsibility for their actions. They have dealt with their circumstances with the awareness that they will not just sit back and face their fate but will get up and change it. WION: Do you truly believe that art has no boundaries? Kanwal: In today's age and time, nothing has boundaries, and art never had any. Look at our cinema and television industries for example. Even when we could not watch Indian shows, sometimes through our analog antennas, we would catch some signals of Doordarshan in the early 80s when I was a child. We used to be thrilled watching 'Chitrahaar' and other programs on Doordarshan and I guess it was the same with our channels being broadcast in your part of the world. We are such big fans of Bollywood cinema that the popularity of a star is now not just estimated by the volume of their Indian fans but also South Asian fans. Through our plays, films, and our music even before the advent of digital media, we knew a lot about each other's cultures, politics, and narratives. We have come from the same cultural background and now with the provision of social media, we have been brought closer to each other in a global sense as well. Art is something that comes from the heart and goes straight to the heart and transcends all boundaries because it is the portrayal of sentiments and emotions that have a universal appeal and language. WION: What do you want the audience to expect from this teleplay? Kanwal: I would like my audience to not expect anything from this play and just sit back and see what the story has in store for them. Just be ready to be surprised by every plot twist that comes your way and be actively involved. WION: Apart from 'Gidh,' your much-in-news film 'Zindagi Tamasha' is now Pakistan's entry to Oscars 2021. What can you tell us about the film and the hype around it? Kanwal: Yes, with a lot of pride, I can tell you that 'Zindagi Tamasha' has been sent to the Oscars as Pakistan's official nomination. It has made a big splash in the news here as well. I was the producer of the film and after all the ups and downs it went through and the unrest it faced, in a way the universe is really redeeming itself at least in our eyes as makers of the film by getting us a nomination at the Oscars. Kanwal: Because of the COVID-19 situation, the cinemas here are all closed so as soon as the business of life resumes, hopefully, we would like to go for a theatrical run. WION: Why do you think it was labelled blasphemous and how do you deal with restrictions on creative freedom and interpretation of art? Kanwal: Artistic expression is always individualistic and personal. It has to be. Maybe not reacting at all is one way of reacting to any kind of restrictions. The other way is to not grab a headline every time you do something and subliminally keep pushing the boundaries and the envelope. And tell your stories in a more sensible and cerebral way through your art. This is the only way to normalize things by presenting them in a very normal and subtle manner. At the end of the day, whatever stories we may tell have been taken from the world around us unless we are depicting aliens and even then, we draw references from what we know. How can something seem so unfamiliar when it is taken from your own environment? Everything is a representation of our own world and is ordinary and familiar in some way. It might be something that has been overlooked for some time or maybe it will be misunderstood because our own perception, mindset, politics, decisions, and biases will filter it. At the end of the day, anything under the sun is a part and parcel of who we are as people. Kanwal: I seriously don't know where the line should be drawn and who should be drawing that line. As an artist, you may understand that anything that has been imposed upon you is an external factor, that you would try and resist. Anything that imposes limits from within could also be a reflection of what you have been conditioned into believing. So, what should be censored and what should not be and what defines creative freedom, I don't know. There is no one fixed answer to this and as they say in the communications field," you have to know your audience." But then who can have a perfect idea of what and who their audiences are and what is their exact consumption behaviour? You may be underestimating or overestimating your audience or even generalizing them. You may or may not censor something keeping the audience in mind but it could be a wrong assumption of your audience. So, I really don't have the perfect answer. WION: How sensitive is Pakistan in dealing with topics like this that have a religious flavour? Kanwal: Why just Pakistan? I guess this sensitivity prevails in almost every part of the world these days. Anything that has to do with any sort of conservatism is something that is not received very openly. People have become more passionate or maybe it's the group mentality that wants to control people and has become stringent in its approach towards what should be allowed for consumption. I don't know if there's any part of the world where creative ideas have been met with a conducive environment. WION: India-Pakistan ties have been quite sour in terms of cross-cultural exchange of arts and artists, what do you hope for the future? Kanwal: I really hope and pray that cross-cultural exchanges of art and artists are given much more importance. Future is something we as people are going to have to pave a way for. The play uses wit, humour, music, and drama to bring out extremely relevant challenges faced by families and individuals, especially against the backdrop of a big, fat wedding.

Purva Naresh shares, “The play tries to develop a discourse on what is feminine identity and how it is being manipulated through classical texts, through patriarchy, through cultural appropriation and the market. Female identity filtered through the male gaze, is the core of the play. A wedding seemed a perfect setting for this because the bride is the epitome of the feminine and the groom of the masculine. It's a wedding and the bride is getting freaked out. Not just the bride but the groom too is getting freaked out. And then it seems, everyone has a disquiet. As the household prepares for a boisterous sangeet, the disquiet seems to be spreading and growing. And through classical songs, folk songs, Bollywood music we begin to see glimpses of how conditioning works. How prevalent is the male gaze that even women embrace it gladly.”

Joy Sengupta who enacts a pivotal character in the teleplay, says, “I play the complex character of a slightly harrowed father whose truth is revealed only in the second half when the audience learns why he has a problematic relationship with his wife. The tension then builds up to a very cathartic scene where all of his insecurities and secrets tumble out. The two lonely souls want to spend the twilight of their life together but their children are against the idea. &nbsp;The theme of the play revolves around the companionship that a man and woman share and how their relationship goes through various ups and downs. &nbsp;

Directed by Anand Mhasvekar, the play stars Girish Oak and Ila Bhate. &nbsp;

The play narrates what happens when army veteran Major Sudhir decides to visit his widowed friend Rama in Pune. Rama who lives alone is excited to see him but is wary of societal disapproval and the reactions of her neighbours. Seeing them together, people begin to get curious and their probing questions make Rama increasingly defensive and uncomfortable. Will the two tackle the negativity coming their way with courage and stand their ground? Or will they give in and go their separate ways?

The teleplay which stars Makarand Deshpande, Aahana Kumra, Sanjay Dadhich and Anjum Sharma explores different dynamics of a Student -teacher relationship. The play holds a special place in actor Sanjay Dadhich’s life who plays the role of Phanidhar. 
 
The actor gets nostalgic as he looks back at his journey with ‘Sir Sir Sarla.’ &nbsp;He shares, “I used to help backstage when Anurag Kashyap was playing the role of Phanidhar. I have seen him breathe life into the character and wished to be a part of such a classic. My dream came true when I was asked to step in his shoes and play the role of Phanidhar.”

Sanjay further added that Kashyap would often joke with him that he owed his career to him. &nbsp;“Anurag would tell me that if he had not left ‘Sir Sir Sarla, I wouldn’t &nbsp;have been able to play Phanidhar."

When asked about the concept of the teleplay, he said “No matter how much you travel with a play, you can possibly just do 50 shows in a year. A teleplay however can reach even a rural audience that may not have had any access to theatre."

With 'Sir Sir Sarla', Dadich has had the opportunity to work with Makarand Deshpande who he considers as his mentor. "I totally surrender to him when he directs because that helps me grow as a performer."

Together, they decide to do put an end to their suffering. What in fact transpires changes one of their lives forever, but not in the way that she had expected.

After Jhaanjhar Di Paanwaan Chhankaar and Mushk, the journey to Gidh has been more than enriching, engrossing and liberating as I embarked on developing the teleplay vocabulary for it. The development of the play was experimental, energetic and challenging, but overall, I am proud of the team that stood by me and believed in me to create something so authentic and so thrilling.”

Actress Sana Jafri said,&nbsp;"The characters in this play are the antithesis of the stereotypical women we see on TV as good or bad. In the beginning, I thought I was playing a woman very different from myself but ended up realising that we shared so many similarities. Working in a room full of strong women helped me let my guard down, altering my perception of womanhood as I know it. We incorporated all our unique experiences, ideas, stories and manifested it into a piece that didn’t adhere to any specific format."
