A chance for India to wean businesses away from China and bring them home. In fact, foreign businesses based in China want to move out. They are looking at India as their new home. Not one or two but as many as 1,000 companies have reached out to India.

They are engaged in discussions with Indian officials at various levels. At least 3,00 companies are actively pursuing production plans. They belong to industries and sectors like mobiles, electronics, medical devices, textiles and synthetic fabric.

Korean companies are making the first move. Reports say&nbsp;the Korean consulate in Chennai has received a number of requests. Two requests are from iron and steel companies and another one from the hospitality sector.

Some startups have also shown interest in moving from China to India. India is being seen as a solid alternative and as a global manufacturing destination.

Highways have reopened, flights and trains are running again and so, it seems, are the people of Wuhan. A long line of cars wait for the highway to open with more than 55 thousand people set to leave Wuhan within a few hours of the lockdown being lifted.

There was a line of passengers at the airport too. For the people of Wuhan, the threat is far from over. Almost all of them were wearing a mask. Some were in protective suits, even with face shields. These passengers were desperate to leave Wuhan.&nbsp;

Passenger Wang Wenshu travelling home to see her parents, said: "I haven't been out since January 21. this is the first time I left the house today. Now I'm going back home to meet my parents."

The country now fears a second wave of the virus from abroad. Amid recent cases of travellers coming from abroad, the Chinese government announced all nationals returning from the US, Italy and Iran will now have to provide daily updates on their health to a WeChat app for up to two weeks before their flights or be denied boarding.

Chinese authorities reported 32 new cases all of which were from abroad raising fears of a second wave of the deadly virus. There were also 30 new asymptomatic infections, health officials said.

Chinese health officials say nearly 1,000 imported cases of the virus have been reported so far.

According to China's health ministry, 3,331 people&nbsp;have been killed due to COVID-19 in the country with 81,740 people infected even as the global death toll due to the virus crossed 70,000.

WHO relies on its members for funding to operate, such a set up gives wealthy countries like China the upper hand, as well as, considerable influence.

The biggest example of that is how China has been able to effectively block Taiwan's entry into the WHO.

WHO is the only organisation that can declare a pandemic, it is the only world body that can mobilize internationally in the event of health threats, but the current coronavirus outbreak shows that it has a broken setup - one that can be easily influenced by powerful nations.

Boredom is an understatement. You find few people in your colony, fewer on streets and very few inside your office. Markets are closed. People have their mouths covered. You do not get a sense of emotion while speaking to another person. Bottom line - lockdown is both at the physical and emotional level.

Media is part of the essential service, but staff across the companies is being rationed, in case the pandemic goes out of hand as it has happened in Italy.

Like many others, I’m also a willful participant in this long march. My ambition, responsibility and scare to work from home drives me to report to work. Despite the awareness that we are dealing with something grave and very problematic, the feeling of being bored beyond your wits, doesn’t leave me. It’s like time has come to a standstill and work has transformed into statistics and that too of death count and people suffering from a fatal infection.

Every conversation from a local store to office guard is about this invisible virus which has come to define our lives. The weight of the daily chores coupled with lack of conversation becomes such a killer that by the end of the day all you want to do is drown yourself in the unreal world of content platforms like Netflix.

It is not as if the work has become less but the content becomes less diversified and one ends up doing the same thing in the loop again and again. It is not to deny the excitement of covering something dreadful, a feeling which a war junkie reporter would truly understand. You aren’t covering anything novel, but the magnitude of the story defines both you and the world which surrounds you and the story.

Having said that, I would say that my day-2 of lockdown remained fuzzy. The only thing which looked good was blue sky in the morning and cloud cover and breeze in the evening.

Pollution was less, and the noise was missing. As if Delhi has been put to sleep and people have disappeared into the big concrete buildings. Roads looked bigger and by-lanes cleaner.

Yesterday when I was leaving for home, I got trailed by two dogs. I thought they were trying to make a run after me. Soon I realized that they were hungry as Noida has been under lockdown. Most of them in Film city were unfed as local stalls too stayed shut. They were very hungry but definitely didn’t look bored as they had the street to themselves which is rarely a case in this part of the city.

Blog: Day 2 of lockdown - boredom is an understatement

It seems like, this new virus has taken over everything almost everywhere on the surface of the earth. Amidst the wake for Coronavirus and as a preventative measure, the Ministry of Human Resource Development decided to shut down educational institutions and postpone all examinations including ongoing boards like the CBSE and the ICSE.&nbsp;

I’m a student and this particular year, I was having my boards. The postponement was surely a bit shocking to all of the candidates appearing for the boards this year, including me.

Schools have been called off. Colleges and Universities have been shut. Councils have issued notices that the boards would be conducted after March 31.&nbsp;

I really don’t get it how the health authorities think of tackling a pandemic in a week or two. To me, the whole thing is messed up. With Italy reporting the largest number of deaths, reports say India could be the next hotspot. India has till now tackled the situation well and we really hope that things get better.

For the boards, most of the students feel distressed. They feel like all the smoothness is gone. Is it something serious and mandatory to postpone exams?

I really don’t know what others would say but yes, I’m completely in support of the decision. As per the Health Expenditure per Capitalist issued by WHO, India is at the 141st position. If a country like Italy, (ranking second in Healthcare after France), could be devastated by the epidemic, what would happen to India?

Indian Prime Minister and authorities have thus deemed it necessary to prevent the spread at this stage.&nbsp; 
When a person is infected with COVID-19, symptoms appear in two weeks. If you catch it today, you would be unaware of it for two weeks. And that’s where the danger lies. Once you’re affected you go to your educational institution transmit the virus to classmates. Then, they go home and transmit it to their parents and so on. This would cause a chain reaction, rather, ‘Community Transmission’ which would result in condition going out of Indian hands. Thus, to prevent gatherings at assemblies, lectures and others, this step by the government is widely appreciable.&nbsp;

India relies a lot on technology. At this point of time, to prevent the pandemic rise as well as to continue the educational process, it is necessary that every college, university and if possible, even schools, video stream online classes.&nbsp;

For what is to be done by us now, is another question in itself. Students can paint, write, sing and dance and do whatever they find amusing and like! Stay indoors! Stay safe! The most important of all is to follow government advice at all costs. Utilise this so-called ‘holiday’ to get ahead of your peers with the certificate courses being given by various online academies.&nbsp;

What I would prefer for myself, is taking up my hobbies, continuing that in full fledge, and stargazing.

Amidst the wake for Coronavirus and as a preventative measure, the Ministry of Human Resource Development decided to shut down educational institutions and postpone all examinations including ongoing boards like the CBSE and the ICSE. I’m a student and this particular year, I was having my boards. The postponement was surely a bit shocking to all of the candidates appearing for the boards this year, including me. Schools have been called off. Colleges and Universities have been shut. Councils have issued notices that the boards would be conducted after March 31. I really don’t get it how the health authorities think of tackling a pandemic in a week or two. To me, the whole thing is messed up. With Italy reporting the largest number of deaths, reports say India could be the next hotspot. India has till now tackled the situation well and we really hope that things get better. For the boards, most of the students feel distressed. They feel like all the smoothness is gone. Is it something serious and mandatory to postpone exams? I really don’t know what others would say but yes, I’m completely in support of the decision. As per the Health Expenditure per Capitalist issued by WHO, India is at the 141st position. If a country like Italy, (ranking second in Healthcare after France), could be devastated by the epidemic, what would happen to India? Indian Prime Minister and authorities have thus deemed it necessary to prevent the spread at this stage. When a person is infected with COVID-19, symptoms appear in two weeks. If you catch it today, you would be unaware of it for two weeks. And that’s where the danger lies. Once you’re affected you go to your educational institution transmit the virus to classmates. Then, they go home and transmit it to their parents and so on. This would cause a chain reaction, rather, ‘Community Transmission’ which would result in condition going out of Indian hands. Thus, to prevent gatherings at assemblies, lectures and others, this step by the government is widely appreciable. India relies a lot on technology. At this point of time, to prevent the pandemic rise as well as to continue the educational process, it is necessary that every college, university and if possible, even schools, video stream online classes. For what is to be done by us now, is another question in itself. Students can paint, write, sing and dance and do whatever they find amusing and like! Stay indoors! Stay safe! The most important of all is to follow government advice at all costs. Utilise this so-called ‘holiday’ to get ahead of your peers with the certificate courses being given by various online academies. What I would prefer for myself, is taking up my hobbies, continuing that in full fledge, and stargazing. Coronavirus crisis: PM Modi suggests joint SAARC strategy; proposes video conference

When the world was blissfully unaware of this creeping pandemic, when the WHO was dragging its feet on declaring the seriousness of the situation, WION brought to you a series of reports on how the Chinese state is complicit in this outbreak.

Beijing tried to underplay the crisis. It mishandled the situation. The outbreak was first ignored by local officials and whistleblowers in China were muzzled.

And the top leadership in China escaped scrutiny when the crisis peaked. The coronavirus has crossed borders and spread around the world. However, it's important to keep the spotlight on China.

Beijing is doing what it does best - hiding the facts, twisting the narrative, whitewashing the problems and evading scrutiny. &nbsp;

Meanwhile, it's a fact that coronavirus is made in China pandemic. The first cases emerged way back in December. The government not only ignored the spread, it punished the doctors who raised concerns.

Within weeks, the virus spread through Wuhan and then all-over China. People were dragged from their homes to hospitals - doctors ran out of supplies. 60 per cent of China's medical workers weren't even graduates.

Cases were hidden, China slammed countries that issued travel advisories. And soon enough, the virus travelled all over the world.&nbsp;Today, more than one lakh 27 thousand cases have been reported.

According to one estimate, this outbreak could cost the world economy 2.7 trillion dollars. Another estimate claims a three trillion dollar loss.

But why must the world pay for China's negligence? Why shouldn't China foot the bill? Why should China be allowed to hold the world hostage? &nbsp;

If there's one take away for the world from this crisis, it is this - create viable alternatives to China. Help emerging economies to step in and fill the gap, switch suppliers.

If leading companies can ditch their Chinese contracts, Beijing will be forced to concede that it put the global economy at risk by ignoring a health crisis. The loss in business and trade deals will be the ultimate reparation to seek from China. &nbsp;

WION Edit: Should China be made to pay for the coronavirus?

Brand “People’s Republic of China” is wobbling, as if the massive picture of Mao Zedong in Tiananmen Square was swaying with an earthquake tremor. But it can only actually fall if pushed from inside.

The handling of the coronavirus epidemic is undoubtedly sapping confidence in the Communist party and its formerly all-conquering general secretary, Xi Jinping.

Any country or ruling party would struggle if faced with a similarly massive challenge – exacerbated by the great annual domestic migration for Lunar New Year.

But the party and its leader shoulder especially great ambitions of entering a “new era” created by Xi to “realise the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.”

National elders selected Xi as a leader in 2012 to purge corruption and purify the party. He has replaced most senior officials, including in the People’s Liberation Army, with those who supported his rise through the provincial ranks in Fujian and Zhejiang.

Xi has restructured the party, personalised and centralised power. Leveraging the anti-corruption campaign, he has also built the central party’s vast surveillance and control powers.

Losing the ‘mandate of heaven’

The big question now is how this renovated party structure is holding up against the appalling coronavirus epidemic. Particularly as it compounds an economic slowdown already exacerbated by the trade-and-tech war with the US and Beijing’s struggles to subdue its troubled borderlands in Xinjiang and Hong Kong.

It would seem logical that since Xi claims all the glory for China’s economic rise and global influence, he would bear the responsibility for disasters, as well.

This would fit with the old imperial danger of losing the “mandate of heaven” – the notion that only a righteous ruler would retain the approval of the Gods.

But there’s a long history in China of people blaming local officials for problems, while retaining a belief in the power of the emperor or general secretary to resolve them. Hundreds of thousands still annually petition the central party leadership about regional and personal wrongs.

Many are still assessing where to pin the blame for the current crisis and are reluctant to accept what they are told officially. People are adroitly downloading and re-posting censored messages on social media, causing the “net police” constant whack-a-mole grief.

This is why the initial failings of the Wuhan authorities, which likely enabled the virus to spread rapidly, have aroused widespread anger in China. And why many rightly dubbed the whistleblowing doctor Li Wenliang, who died from the disease after being hauled in by police, a martyr.

In recent days, the central government has also blamed local authorities, replacing the party secretary in Hubei province. However, public anger and distrust of the authorities still burns.

Crises like the melamine-laced milk powder scandal that sickened more than 300,000 babies in 2008 and now coronavirus underline a basic reality: for all the vast sums spent on security in China, it remains fundamentally elusive for most people.

Alistair Nicholas, a Sydney-based business consultant with extensive China experience, told me his contacts in China have said, "&nbsp;The poor initial handling of the crisis by the Chinese authorities has ‘left a bitter taste in the mouths of many Chinese.’ Trust with their own government has been broken and those who can leave."

With hundreds of millions still staying largely at home, staring at smartphones, such sentiments seep out everywhere. 
 
Reform remains unlikely 
 
Xi will, of course, be aware it was in Wuchang, a district of Wuhan, where a rebellion began in 1911 that triggered the downfall of the Qing Dynasty.

Today, however, the extent of China’s online and offline controls almost rule out change – or even threat – coming from the “masses”.

They are not trusted to participate in their own governance. They are given no scope to organise. Since seizing power in 1949, the party has drawn a line under further revolutions.

In the last few days, two figures named Xu have challenged Xi, and suffered the consequences.

Xu Zhiyong, a civil rights activist and academic who called on Xi to resign over the virus response, has been arrested by security officials in Guangzhou.

And Xu Zhangrun, a famous law professor at Tsinghua University, has been placed under effective house arrest after posting a lengthy critique that said China’s political system.

There has also been sharp criticism of China’s response to the crisis overseas, but this, too, carries limited weight in Beijing.

Instead, China highlights and relishes the applause its governance receives, especially from agencies like the World Health Organisation. WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus recently thanked China for its “transparency” and heaped particular praise on Xi for his “detailed knowledge of the outbreak”.

There are, of course, questions about when Xi’s knowledge of the outbreak actually began.

But rather than claiming ignorance of the severity of the outbreak at the outset, Xi has decided to take a different course. He’s persisting with his customary claim of omniscience and blaming local officials, while insisting China’s “war” against the virus has been valiant, as attested by the WHO and other international voices.

Who is going to take credible issue with that?

In today’s China, it is not intellectuals or the general public, but the 90 million party members who will determine whether this epidemic demands substantial change.

And that will ultimately depend on the tiny circle of elite cadres surrounding Xi. Unless a convincing crack appears at the top, the crucial band of middle-ranking party managers will sit tight.

‘Not just a problem for China, but for the world’

The personalisation of the system, combined with Xi’s reluctance to groom a successor is, however, steadily raising party anxiety about the future.

Xi said recently, " The long-term sound fundamentals of our economy haven’t changed … The impact of the outbreak will only be short-term."

But the rippling effects of coronavirus threaten to derail Xi’s vision of “rejuvenation” - a Chinese century of power and affluence. Economists ponder whether China will now spring the “middle-income trap” that has restrained the prosperity of other nations, risking a failure to “get rich before it grows old.”

The almost certain postponement of next month’s National People’s Congress is a further mark of a government in crisis. Despite making good health sense, this move would create political risk by acknowledging that even pillar state events are now eluding Xi’s control.

Once eventually summoned, though, the NPC delegates will be expected to cheer to the red rafters Xi’s victory in the “People’s War” against coronavirus.

But what does it mean, asks Jude Blanchette, who holds the Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, for Xi to dominate a party and government, "That appear unable to confront, diagnose, and effectively overcome complex domestic and international challenges? That’s not just a problem for China, but for the world."

Or as the stood-down law professor Xu Zhangrun asks, can a regime that cannot treat its own people well, treat the world well?

The video shows people who had refused to self-quarantine being forcibly taken away from an apartment by local officials in the city of Kunshan. A man and a woman can be seen being dragged away by officials in protective suits. And behind them, a man can be seen lying on the ground trying to resist, before he is lifted by authorities and carried downstairs. China is dealing with this outbreak on a war footing and the person leading this effort is china's Vice Premier Sun Chunlan. "There must be no deserters...Or they will be nailed to the pillar of historical shame forever." Chunlan was quoted as saying. Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that authorities are going from house to house and individually conducting fever checks on people. They are also rounding up patients and warehousing them -- sometimes forcefully. The problem with quarantine centres is that they seldom have treatment facilities. They are meant to isolate patients. Not necessarily cure them. The transport restrictions present another challenge -- shortage of supplies. If vehicles are not allowed to enter Wuhan, it becomes difficult to re-stock pharmacies, supermarkets and hospitals. The situation is quite similar across the Hubei province where 50 million people reside. China is also trying to win the narrative war on social media. Weibo and Tencent -- the 2 internet giants in China are reportedly being regulated to reflect the government's position.
