The United States retained the women's World Cup on Sunday as a Megan Rapinoe penalty and a superb Rose Lavelle strike gave the holders a 2-0 victory over a battling Netherlands side in Lyon.

The whippet-like Lavelle, another stand-out performer over the last month, got the second goal in the 69th minute, killing off Dutch hopes of a comeback.

The victory underlines the USA's status as the dominant force in international women's football as they claim the World Cup for the fourth time in eight editions.

They were already the first team to appear in three consecutive finals, and coach Jill Ellis becomes the first coach to win back-to-back World Cups in the men's or women's game since Italy's Vittorio Pozzo in the 1930s.

The USA had been the only non-European team to make it to the quarter-finals here, but they had already ended the hopes of the hosts and England before denying the Dutch a dream double success, two years after they won Euro 2017 on home soil.

Whether the Americans can continue this domination on to the next World Cup remains to be seen, not least because Rapinoe is already in the twilight years of her career.

Pakistani star all-rounder Shoaib Malik has announced retirement from one-day international cricket after Pakistan's 94-run win over Bangladesh on Friday at Lord's.&nbsp;

"I am retiring from one-day cricket," said Malik, who was dropped after a disappointing World Cup featuring two ducks in three maches.

"I'm sad as I'm leaving the format I loved the most but this will allow me to spend more time with my family and concentrate on the Twenty20 World Cup next year," added Malik, who is married to Indian tennis star Sania Mirza.

Pakistan registered a thumping victory over Bangladesh to finish level on 11 points and games won (five) with fourth-placed New Zealand.

Despite the win and 11 points, Pakistan failed to make to the semis due to their inferior run-rate.&nbsp;

Malik made his one-day debut in 1999 against West Indies has drawn curtains on his ODI career spanning 20 years.&nbsp;

Overall, Malik has played a total of 287 ODI matches. Across format, he has played 433 international games for Pakistan.&nbsp;

In fifty-over format, all-rounder Malik scored 7534 runs and took 158 wickets.&nbsp;

Malik made his last ODI appearance against India in Manchester in the World Cup 2019 tournament when he was dismissed for a duck.&nbsp;

"Yes, I wanted to help my team win the World Cup as a senior but at times things don't go the way you think and that's part and parcel of cricket," he said.&nbsp;

He was unfortunate to miss out on the World Cup after hitting a purple patch of form in the lead-up to the tournament.

"Shaun was obviously very disappointed. He is still in surgery at the moment, so we just wish him a speedy recovery. I think it hit the boys pretty hard," Finch said.

If Maxwell is not fit to face South Africa, Handscomb is likely to be drafted straight into the team.

"He will be 100 per cent ready to go," Finch said. "He was really stiff to miss out in the first place on the World Cup squad and every opportunity he's had recently with bat in hand, in the field, he's nailed."

Victory for Australia would mean they topped the table and set up a semi-final against New Zealand, avoiding two of the pre-tournament favourites in India and England.

"We were able to have a chat and regroup before two very important games and the way the players have been able to adjust after those losses has been fantastic.

"Everyone spoke, including the younger players in the group, and they were very honest about how they were feeling and what they thought they had to do to crack it."

The International Cricket Council has said it will take action against any fans involved in "scuffles" before the Cricket World Cup match between <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-36-pakistan-vs-afghanistan-231448">Pakistan and Afghanistan</a> at Headingley on Saturday.&nbsp;

Videos shared on social media showed supporters of both countries fighting outside the venue and security personnel being forced to intervene, while ESPNcricinfo reported that at least two fans had been evicted from the ground.

"We are aware of some scuffles among a minority of fans and are currently working with the venue security team and the local police force, West Yorkshire Police, to ensure there are no further incidents," an ICC spokesperson said.

"We do not condone this type of behaviour, and will take appropriate action against any anti-social behaviour that spoils the enjoyment for the majority of fans."

Local media reported that the trouble started when a plane towing the message 'Justice for Balochistan' flew over the venue. Balochistan is the largest province in Pakistan and borders Afghanistan to the north.
