After putting Sri Lanka in to bat, South Africa were set a target of 204 as seamer Dwaine Pretorius took 3-25 off 10 overs in an innings that was interrupted by a swarm of bees that invaded the pitch and sent the players and umpires to the floor.

After the early loss of Quinton de Kock, already-eliminated South Africa never looked troubled as Amla (80 not out) and Du Plessis (96 not out) put on 175 for the second wicket, playing with a kind of freedom not seen before by the team in a dismal tournament for the side.

Sri Lanka needed victory to move level with fourth-placed England in the race for semi-final places, but struggled with bat and ball against an opponent who have now beaten them in 17 of their last 19 meetings.

Sri Lanka produced a fast start to their innings that was halted by the immaculate line and length of Pretorius as South Africa limited their opponents to 203 all out three balls shy of 50 overs.

Australia coach Justin Langer thinks it unlikely that frontline quicks Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins will be rested at the World Cup even if the defending champions have already qualified for the semi-finals.

Virat Kohli top-scored with 72 to lay the foundations for India's 268 for seven after electing to bat first at Manchester's Old Trafford.

The Indian bowlers, led by paceman Mohammed Shami, then dismissed West Indies for 143 in 34.2 overs to end the West Indies' hopes of progressing.

India, who have displaced England as the top-ranked one-day team, remain the only unbeaten side in the tournament and need just one victory from their remaining three league games to guarantee a semi-finals berth.

West Indies joined Afghanistan and South Africa as the three teams to bow out of the race for the final four so far.

"We can't complain, we have just become the number one side in the world and we have been playing like that for a while now," said captain and man-of-the-match Kohli.

"Things hadn't gone our way with the bat in the last few games but we have found a way to win."

Shami, who took a hat-trick in the previous game, returned figures of 4-16, removing the dangerous Chris Gayle early after a scratchy innings from the opener.

But it was Kohli who set up the win as he became fastest batsman to reach 20,000 international runs in his 417th innings -- India's Sachin Tendulkar and Caribbean batsman Brian Lara both required 453 international innings to reach the landmark.

Wicketkeeper-batsman M.S. Dhoni and Hardik Pandya boosted the total, putting on 70 runs for the sixth wicket to punish the otherwise-disciplined bowlers.

Pandya hit 46 off 38 balls while Dhoni remained unbeaten on 56, ending the innings with a big six.

Pakistan suffered a bruising 89-run loss to India in Manchester on June 16, a result which sparked a furious backlash from their frustrated fans.

The defeat put Pakistan's hopes of reaching the World Cup semi-finals in grave danger.

And, although they kept alive their slender last-four hopes by beating South Africa on Sunday, Arthur admitted the India loss left him feeling desperately low.

Arthur's emotional comment may have been exaggerated to show how passionate he is about his job.

But some fans feel the South Africa-born coach's words are in bad taste given Pakistan's former coach Bob Woolmer died of natural causes during the 2007 World Cup.

Pakistan lifted Arthur's spirts with an impressive 49-run win against South Africa at Lord's.

World Cup: Australia reach semis with 64-run win over arch-rivals England

On a balmy evening on June 25, 1983, Kapil Dev etched his name in the heart of every cricket fan in India while holding aloft the Prudential Cup in Lord's balcony after beating the mighty West Indies led by the indomitable Clive Lloyd.

West Indies lost the throne and then never got it back again. It was a watershed moment in world cricket and saw the advent of Asia in the game which was otherwise dominated by the big three - England, Australia and West Indies.

On that historic Saturday, Clive Lloyd won the toss and put India into bat. It seemed the West Indies bowlers led by Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Malcolm Marshall and Michael Holding would tear apart the Indian line-up and it went as predicted.

Gavaskar lost his wicket to Roberts with India reduced to 2-1 but his counterpart Kris Srikkanth had other ideas. In true T20 fashion, India's premier blaster layed into the attack hitting boundaries and sixes in a well-planned counter-attack.

Srikkant hit 38 in 57 balls studded with seven boundaries and one six as India pulled back from Gavaskar's early loss. Mohinder Amarnath who was declared the man of the match pitched in with 26(80 balls) with three boundaries to keep India in the game.

Sandeep Patil, the six-hitter par excellence who was known for his hook shots made a quickfire 27 in just 29 balls with one six but others failed to capitalise as India folded for just 183 in 54.4 overs.

Andy Roberts picked up 3 wickets with Marshall, Holding and Larry Gomes pitching in with two wickets respectively.

Then began India's fairytale...

West Indies batsman started their innings and began falling by the wayside. Opener Greenidge left with just 5 runs on the board, Haynes was no better scoring just 13. Viv Richards kept West Indies in the match but after Kapil Dev took his catch running back to a well-pitched Madan Lal delivery with West Indies on 57-3, Indian supporters felt their nerves tingle.

Madan Lal picked up three crucial wickets - Haynes, Richards and Gomes and Amarnath dislodged wicketkeeper Dujon, Malcolm Marshall and last man&nbsp; - Michael Holding as India n fans ran into the pitch to hug their heroes.

On a balmy evening on June 25, 1983, Kapil Dev etched his name in the heart of every cricket fan in India while holding aloft the Prudential Cup in Lord's balcony after beating the mighty West Indies led by the indomitable Clive Lloyd. Sandeep Patil, the six-hitter par excellence who was known for his hook shots made a quickfire 27 in just 29 balls with one six but others failed to capitalise as India folded for just 183 in 54.4 overs. Andy Roberts picked up 3 wickets with Marshall, Holding and Larry Gomes pitching in with two wickets respectively. Then began India's fairytale... West Indies batsman started their innings and began falling by the wayside. Opener Greenidge left with just 5 runs on the board, Haynes was no better scoring just 13. Viv Richards kept West Indies in the match but after Kapil Dev took his catch running back to a well-pitched Madan Lal delivery with West Indies on 57-3, Indian supporters felt their nerves tingle. Madan Lal picked up three crucial wickets - Haynes, Richards and Gomes and Amarnath dislodged wicketkeeper Dujon, Malcolm Marshall and last man - Michael Holding as India n fans ran into the pitch to hug their heroes. It was 36 years ago today, but for Indian fans it happened yesterday. Although Team India went on to win another World Cup after 28 years in 2011 at the Wankhede in Mumbai under MS Dhoni, the feeling of the first Cup never subsided. "I had to work really hard with the bat. I think the five wickets gave me greater pleasure, it was important," Shakib said.&nbsp;

Bangladesh, winners against South Africa and the West Indies earlier in the tournament, are up to fifth place in the 10-team group stage.

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell ruled out of World Cup with injury

Pakistan knocked South Africa out of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=cricket+world+cup">World Cup 2019</a> on Sunday keeping their own semi-final dream alive.

The Men in Green won despite dropping at least six catches during the match, and by being consistent in their sloppy fielding in the tournament.

Sloppy fielding, almost as regular a feature of Pakistan cricket as dazzling fast bowling, continues to let Pakistan down.&nbsp;

In the six matches played so far in the World Cup, Pakistan have now dropped 14 catches in this World Cup - the most of any team in the tournament - an analysis of teams' performance shows.&nbsp;

India, on the other hand, have been having exceptionally well in terms of fielding and have dropped only one catch in the four complete matches they have played.

"For me at the moment, it's a confidence thing. The guys are playing with low confidence and therefore making more mistakes," he said.

"The responsibility lies with every player to try and make sure that he comes to the park and gives everything, and if confidence is an issue, you need to sort it out yourself.

"You know, if I could I would get my wand out and get some runs on the table for our batters. But I can't, unfortunately."

Rabada and Du Plessis said the team had lessons to learn, and that they would be fighting to get things right next time.

"We'll definitely be back firing, looking to nail some of the things that we wanted to nail in this tournament," Rabada said.

Mohammed Shami's last-over hattrick Saturday saved India from a mighty scare after they managed to pip Afghanistan by 11 runs to inch closer towards World Cup semi-finals. &nbsp;

Shami (9.5-1-40-4), playing his first match, not only successfully defended 16 runs off the last over but also dismissed the dangerous Mohammed Nabi (52 off 55 balls), Aftab Alam (0) and Mujeeb ur Rahman (0) off successive deliveries to complete the rare feat.&nbsp;

Afghanistan were bowled out for 213 in pursuit of a manageable 225 run target which at one stage looked gettable after the Indian middle-order flopped in their first World Cup test.&nbsp;

"This game was way more important for us, because things didn't go as planned. That's when you need to show character and bounce back," Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.&nbsp;

Drafted into the playing eleven in place of injured Bhuvneswar Kumar, Shami Saturday became only the second Indian cricketer to register a hattrick in World Cup after Chetan Sharma, who achieved the feat in 1987.&nbsp;

Kohli, thus, was effusive in his praise for the speedster.&nbsp;

"Everyone's waiting for an opportunity. Shami was really good today. He was making the ball move more than anybody. We knew these guys were hungry," he said.&nbsp;

Rating the win over Afghanistan as a special one, the India captain said the wicket was a difficult one for stroke-making because of its two-paced nature.&nbsp;

"This is right up there (as a win). You win the toss, and you decide to bat and then you see the wicket slow down. You think 260 or 270 would be a good total," he said. &nbsp;

"At the halfway stage, we had our doubts in our minds, but we also had self-belief in the change rooms. As soon as I went in, I understood the pace of the pitch. Cross-batted shots aren't on, and a lot of horizontal bat shots cost us on this pitch." &nbsp;

Kohli also praised man-of-the-match Jasprit Bumrah for his impressive bowling display that brought India back into the contest. &nbsp;

"It's simple - we want to use him (Bumrah) smartly. When he takes one or two wickets, he can go on, but otherwise we try to ensure the opposition knows that he has seven or so overs to go," he said.&nbsp;

Man-of-the-match Bumrah (2/39) said Kohli's belief in his ability spurs him to do do better every time he runs into bowl. &nbsp;

"That gives you a lot of confidence when the captain has so much trust in you. Helps me keep a clearer head," he said.&nbsp;

Bumrah also elaborated on India's strategy while defending the low total.&nbsp;

"We saw the wicket getting slower and slower. You had to be accurate and it's a big ground, so you had go for the yorkers and bowl wicket-to-wicket. &nbsp;

"What we wanted to do was that when you run behind wickets, you don't get wickets. Our plan was to get the run-rate high and create chances," he said.&nbsp;

"That's very good, because it gives us healthy competition within the side. We discuss what the plans are, and it's great when everybody is chipping in with wickets," he said.&nbsp;

Afghanistan skipper Gulbadin Naib showered praise on his bowling unit but said Bumrah eventually made the difference. &nbsp;

"We bowled really well, and everybody in the batting lineup was strong. We did well in the batting too, but credit goes to Bumrah for the way he bowled in the last three overs. He was superb," he said. &nbsp;

"The wicket was really good for batting during the first half. The spinners stuck to the plan, and they did really well. We had other options than Rashid (Khan) and Mujeeb (Ur Rahman), but in the backend, Aftab (Alam) and I also bowled well, but India is a good side, and a favourite side." &nbsp;

He, however, said such tough games against strong teams like India will do a world of good for Afghanistan. &nbsp;

"The total was not that much (to chase) but in the middle, we needed some 80s and 100s, 20s and 30s aren't enough against a team like this. When chasing 220s, you need some batsmen to take responsibility and go longer.

"We have lost four games very badly, but last two games we have played really well. This is tough cricket against high-ranking teams, and you have to fight your best," Naib said.

The Pakistan team under captain Sarfaraz Ahmed have failed to live up to their country's expectations and there will be a "robust review" of their performance in the last three years, the Pakistan Cricket Board said on Wednesday.

Pakistan are still trying to salvage their World Cup campaign as they languish ninth in the 10-team standings with one win from five matches.

They are still smarting from Sunday's heavy defeat by arch-rivals India.

The PCB is expecting the team to stage a comeback in the tournament but they would need something extraordinary to finish the group stage in the top four and make the semi-finals.

"The BoG had a discussion on the Pakistan cricket team’s recent performance across all formats," the PCB said in a statement after a Board of Governors meeting in Lahore.

"The members agreed the team’s performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 to date has been below expectation, but expressed faith, support and confidence in the side, and hoped they will ... bounce back strongly and finish on a high.

"...following the World Cup, the PCB will carry out a robust review and analysis of the side’s and the team support personnel’s performances in the past three years and submit their recommendations to the Chairman and the BoG for their consideration."

The 1992 world champions next play South Africa at Lord's on Sunday.

Bangladesh's outstanding run chase against West Indies has given them the confidence to beat any team in the World Cup, captain Mashrafe Mortaza said ahead of Thursday's clash with in-form Australian at Trent Bridge.

Even though bottom of the table Afghanistan, suffering their fifth defeat in five matches, posted their highest World Cup total of 247-8 they were never up with the required run-rate.

There was a worrying moment when Hashmatullah Shahidi, on 24, was hit on the side of the helmet by a Mark Wood bouncer and fell to the turf.

But after several minutes' on-field treatment, Shahidi resumed his innings in a new helmet.

Shahidi completed a gutsy 68-ball fifty on his way to 76, while his fourth-wicket stand of partnership of 94 with Ashgar Afghan (44) was a record for any Afghanistan wicket at a World Cup.

On being asked how quickly can Roy recover from a torn hamstring, the skipper gave a witty reply.&nbsp;
