"There should not be any backlash for the decision taken," the former India opening batsman added.

'All the best to team India,' says Gautam Gambhir ahead of Cricket World Cup 2019

Leg spinner Rashid Khan is already on his way to becoming Afghanistan's first sporting superstar and the 20-year-old is determined his first World Cup will be remembered for his country achieving something rather than just taking part.

The world's best Twenty20 bowler, Rashid was just 18 when he exploded onto the world stage with the fourth best haul in one-day international history, taking seven for 18 to help Afghanistan beat West Indies in St Lucia.

Rashid was already an ODI veteran by then, having made his debut soon after his 17th birthday, and has since taken his career figures to 125 wickets at an average of 15.33 in 59 matches -- good enough for third spot in the ICC rankings.

His batting is good enough -- 798 runs at an average of 22.80 -- that he is number two in the world all-rounder rankings in ODIs but it his leg spin, most notably his devastating quick wrong 'un, that sets him apart.

"Rashid Khan is a once-in-a-lifetime bowler," Australia's Adam Zampa purred after a recent net session with the Afghan.

"The reason he runs in so fast is because he’s got really thick fingers and holds the ball right at the end. He bowls it right at the end and he's so hard to pick because he just uses the end of his fingers.

"I tried doing it but they were just slipping out, I was like 'this bloke is unbelievable'."

It is not only his wicket-taking that makes Rashid such a threat but his ability to contain batsmen as they look to pour on runs in the latter stages of an innings, a skill he illustrated in this year's Indian Premier League.

His teammate and fellow spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman is the only active bowler more economical than Rashid in ODIs, even if much of their careers have been spent playing against teams from the lower end of the rankings.

Rashid did experience victories over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as well as a tie with a weakened India side when Afghanistan finished second at the Asian Cup last year but he knows the World Cup will be another step up.

Debutants without him at the last World Cup in 2015, Afghanistan secured just one victory over Scotland and were humbled by eventual champions Australia, who they meet in their opener at this year's edition on June 1 in Bristol.

They will continue to be an inspiration to their compatriots in their war-ravaged country whatever they do, of course, but Rashid thinks it is high time Afghanistan turned their undoubted talent into some kind of success.

"We have the skills, everything," Rashid told Adelaide's Advertiser newspaper earlier this month.

"We need to show the world we are not only good on paper ... We didn't do well in the past under pressure but I think this World Cup is about beating big teams and play good cricket like we did in the Asia Cup.

"It is time for us to deliver something."

Ahead of the World Cup, warm-up matches will take place.

Each team will get an opportunity to play two games.

India will face New Zealand on May 25 in its first warm-up followed by a match against Bangladesh on May 28.

"We are going into the World Cup as a balanced and strong side. You saw in the IPL as well. All the players in the squad are in great form and playing really well. I think from that point of view, we just expect ourselves to play the best cricket we can," the Indian captain said.

All the 10 teams will face each other in a Round Robin format.

Calling it the most challenging World Cup, Kohli said, "It`s the most challenging one of all three that I've been part of because of the format. Looking at the strength of all the sides as well. If you look at Afghanistan from 2015 to now, they are completely different side. Any team can upset anyone on their given day. That's one thing we have in our mind."

"Now it's about what we are going to do in the World Cup. Obviously, it`s the coach's duty to get the best results from the players, and he wants players that can win matches for the team. I also wanted to be in the team, the only difference is I missed two years of (international) cricket. Now I am in and want to prove him (Arthur) wrong and justify my opportunity," ESPN Cricinfo quoted Riaz, as saying.

In 2018, Arthur had criticised Riaz for his work ethic and even went on to say that the pacer has not won them a game in two years.

Riaz has not played an ODI match since June 2017 and was not named in the 17 men who were in England recently for a five-match ODI series.

However, Riaz remained optimistic throughout and said that he does not want to waste the opportunity he has got.

"You can't say it was unfair (that I was selected). I kept on hearing that I might be chosen for the Australia series or the one against England, but it didn`t work out. "Being named in the squad and then not being able to perform will be another unfortunate thing as there is a lot of expectation. I hope for the best and want to take this opportunity to move on and perform," he added.

However, after Riaz's inclusion, Junaid Khan did not find a spot in the final squad even after being named in the preliminary 15-member team.

Riaz stated he understands Khan's situation and says he has also gone through similar situations.

"Every player wishes to play for Pakistan and the World Cup is the biggest challenge in your career. Obviously, he will be saddened and very frustrated, and must be thinking he had been treated unfairly. But when I was out for two years, I was thinking the same. At the end, this is the Pakistan team and its selectors, coaches and captains make the decision. He missed the ODI series against Sri Lanka earlier this year, with Aiden Markram taking his place as an opener alongside vice-captain Quinton de Kock in the series.

Amla was also missing in action at the IPL and he says the long break helped him to sharpen his game.

"Things happen that you don't anticipate and I did not anticipate how things have gone recently. But I am a firm believer that when something happens, there is some good in it. I have had time away and now I am really looking back to wearing the green and gold again," Amla was quoted as saying by the ICC.

"I am hungrier than ever before, there is no doubt about that. I have been blessed to have this shirt for a while but the time off has made me want to come back stronger.

"This is my third (World Cup) so I know what it is all about. I have a strong record in England and I have always enjoyed coming here", Amla said.

The 36-year-old has already featured in two World Cups for South Africa but New Zealand ended their run in both the editions -- quarter-finals in 2011 and semi-finals four years ago.

South Africa will open their campaign against World No. 1 England, a side tipped to win the World Cup, and Amla believes the underdog status will suit South Africa.

"It is the best first game we could have asked for. We have played England recently and had some success against them, I have done well against them too," he said.

"This year, you don't see the same big names and that is why the focus is not on us but that has some good in it. There has not been much chat about us winning in comparison to the past but I don't think that played a part in how we performed.

"At the end of the day, we always gave our best and played to win. The fact there has not been a lot of chat at this World Cup means there is less expectation but in the team, we think we can do well", Amla said.

Time away from the game has made him "hungrier than ever before" says South Africa batsman Hashim Amla, gearing up for his third World Cup. With more than 18,000 international runs under his belt, Amla was once a batting mainstay for Proteas but lost his place in the team due to a dip in form.

"He's got a good record, wonderful yorker, good pace," added the Australian, a member of the 2003 World Cup winning side.

Besides Bumrah, Lee picked compatriots Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummings as the other two fast bowlers who will do well at the quadrennial tournament.

"You'd have to stick with Mitchell Starc," Lee told cricket.Com.Au.

Starc, a left-armer, had suffered a chest injury last February and is nearing peak fitness.

"He's still got that quality. When that pace is up he's hard to go past," Lee said of Starc, who was the 2015 Player of the Tournament for his 22 wickets at 10 runs apiece.

Heaping praise on Cummins, Lee said, "Pat Cummins - pace, accuracy, variations. He can do it all."

In six matches this year, Cummins has taken 17 wickets at just 14.29.

"The thing that will define Australia's success in the World Cup is, one, how well they bowl spin and, two, how well they play it," Ponting was quoted as saying by the 'Sydney Morning Herald'.

"That's been their Achilles' heel the last 12 or 18 months. With (Adam) Zampa bowling well now, Nathan Lyon's obviously in the squad and Glenn Maxwell's done a good job with the ball whenever he's played", Ponting said.

Ponting said there were concerns about the middle-order's ability to play spin a year ago but the return of David Warner and Steve Smith has strengthened the team.

"And I think some of our middle order are probably slightly better players of spin now than they were 12 or 18 months ago," said the 44-year-old, who won Australia the 1999 World Cup as a player, before guiding the team to successive titles in the next two editions as a captain.

"With Warner there now and Steve Smith coming back in, the middle order looks a lot better against spin bowling than it probably was", he added.

Warner and Smith had served a 12-month ban for their respective roles in the ball-tampering scandal that rocked Australian cricket in March last year.

They returned to competitive cricket at the Indian Premier League with Warner amassing 692 runs in 12 matches and Smith scoring 319 runs in 12 matches and leading Rajasthan Royals to three wins in five matches.

"They're both playing really well. Steve Smith still thinks he's not probably 100 per cent fit just yet - but he's not far away. And Warner's been the dominant batsman in the IPL," Ponting said.

There are concerns that Smith and Warner will be targeted by the crowd during the World Cup with English cricketer Moeen Ali urging the spectators to treat them with respect.

"Those two coming in, obviously they're class players - they'll have their fair share of issues to deal with from the crowds and stuff when they get over there," he said.

"But they're big boys. They've been there and seen it all before. I'm sure they'll be fine", Ponting added.

Australia will begin their campaign against Afghanistan on June 1 at Bristol.

Ricky Ponting: How Australia bowl and play spin will define their success in World Cup 2019

Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and the head coach Ravi Shastri addressed a press conference before leaving for the World Cup, which is scheduled to kick off from May 30.

During the press conference, Kohli said, "Handling pressure is the most important thing in the World Cup and not necessarily the conditions. All our bowlers are fresh, no one looks fatigued."

"I think the only expectation we have is to play really good cricket and that's been our focus," Kohli added.

"The team has been together for past four-five years and bowled together as unit. All players complement each other and can adjust accordingly," said Kohli on the Indian squad.

The skipper also reflected his thoughts on England's pitches.

"Our mantra is to be flexible in the last 10 overs, pitches are going to be flat but overcast conditions will also have to be taken into consideration. It will also depend on venue to venue, so you have to be prepared for that and be flexible," Kohli said.

On the other hand, coach Ravi Shastri said, "World Cup might be a stage but the stage is to be enjoyed, if we play to our potential then the Cup might be back here."

On the changed format of the World Cup, Shastri said, "Format is also challenging, the gap between team is also very close. It's a very strong competition. It will be fantastic. The plus side is you have nine games."

"It's a strong competition, even Bangladesh and Afghanistan are much stronger than in 2015," Shastri added.

Virat Kohli: No fatigue due to IPL, World Cup conditions not a challenge

Former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has revealed his childhood dream which can be his post-retirement career option. He said that since childhood, he wanted to become a painter and also shared two of his paintings. Dhoni said that he will soon hold an exhibition of his paintings and asked for suggestions and advice from his fans in this regard.

In a video shared on Instagram, Dhoni said, "I wanted to share a secret with all of you. Right from when I was a kid I always wanted to become an artist."

"So decided I have played a lot of cricket and it's time for me to take up what I really wanted to become. And I started getting into painting."

Twitterati was rather stunned as one user wrote, "@msdhoni is this happening for real? Unbelievable!"

Another user suggested, "Chill out folks. @msdhoni's video is nothing short of a comedy sketch and is meant to be taken that way."

Well, it is difficult to guess that paintings are made by Dhoni or his daughter Ziva.

Right from when I was a kid I always wanted to become an artist." "So decided I have played a lot of cricket and it's time for me to take up what I really wanted to become. And I started getting into painting." Twitterati was rather stunned as one user wrote, "@msdhoni is this happening for real? Unbelievable!" Another user suggested, "Chill out folks. @msdhoni's video is nothing short of a comedy sketch and is meant to be taken that way." Well, it is difficult to guess that paintings are made by Dhoni or his daughter Ziva. Watch the video to see the paintings! South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis on Sunday said that the team wanted to do play like a superhero in the previous editions of the World Cup, adding that his team leaves no stone unturned in giving their best during such tournaments.

"In previous World Cups, we wanted to do Superman things. We thought we had to be more special, we had to do something more than we usually do, and we did not do what was good enough before," International Cricket Council (ICC) quoted Du Plessis as saying.

"We haven't always got that right in the past, to play our best cricket at the World Cup, because we put so much pressure on ourselves. We want to just focus on enjoying our cricket," he added.

South Africa has built a reputation for themselves of "chokers" after losing big matches. The team has never gone past the semi-final stages of the World Cup.

Du Plessis highlighted that the team needs to overcome its fear of failure to succeed in the World Cup.

"We started a year or two ago with a real focus on mental preparation and, as a captain, I probably speak more about that than previous captains. But I really believe it's an area we can get better in. I've been there and I know the pressures, I understand how to deal with them," Du Plessis said.

"There's a reason why we want the guys to play freely - because we don't want them to have a fear of failure, which is what the World Cup is for some of them. Our success in England over the next couple of months depends on how well we release that aspect of our play - we need that for the team to be at our best. Each player needs to find out his own strengths," he added.

The 34-year-old also said that the team would go with the best possible playing XI in every match, hinting that Hashim Amla's form in the warm-up matches will play a key role in his selection in the playing XI in the first match against England.

"In terms of team selection, that's a call we will make when we get to that first game. We have two warm-up games. Generally, we want to pick on form. If we believe Hash Amla is the guy with the best form for the first game, then he will be picked. But if we feel there are other guys that are more in form we will pick them," Du Plessis said.

South Africa will take on Sri Lanka and West Indies in the warm-up matches before the World Cup on May 24 and May 26.

The team will face England in the opening match of the World Cup on May 30.

Throwback to ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: Starc emerges as Australia rules

Australia wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey stated that his team will focus on playing on their strengths rather than changing their game plans according to the oppositions in the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) Men's Cricket World Cup.

"We have got a certain game style which has been successful in the last eight games, against quality opposition. For us, it is playing to our strengths. Every team in the World Cup has got their strengths. We aren't too much about opposition's game style. That's where we get distracted from what we are really good at," ICC quoted Carey, as saying.

"So for us, it's building on our success in the last few months. David (Warner) and Steve (Smith) comes back in. Quality players. Aaron Finch is in really good form. Our quicks (are in good form as well). We got a lot of exciting players," he added.

Other than having 'exciting players', Carey feels confident going in the premier tournament along with the former World Cup winners, Ricky Ponting (Assistant coach) and Brad Haddin (fielding coach), who will be in their support staff.

"We've got a lot of knowledge. Brad Haddin played in the last World Cup, we've got Ricky Ponting coming in, we've got a number of players who played in that last World Cup," he said.

"We've got lots of knowledge around the group of guys to access. When we get into it, that's when the high-pressure (experience) comes into it," Carey added.

Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar was recently named in the fifteen-member World Cup squad and the player is likely to bat at number four position for the team.

Shankar believes how he prepares will be the key factor going into the tournament.

At the time of announcing the squad, chief selector MSK Prasad said that Shankar is being viewed as a number four batsman.

Ambati Rayudu was seen as a potential number four batsman, but Shankar was given a nod ahead of him in the final squad due to his three-dimensional abilities.

"There's a difference between batting at number four position and batting in the lower order. How I prepare myself will the real challenge for me. I need to be in good shape, the most important thing will be how I play according to the situation. I should be equipped to play in any condition," Shankar told ANI.

"Number four slot, there have many been speculations about that slot. It is really important for me to keep things simple. Other things are not in my control, I should try to control what I can control," he added.

Shankar will be playing for the first time in the World Cup.

The player said being part of the World Cup-bound team is really special as the tournament happens once every four years.

"Everyone's dream is to first play for the country. Whenever you step in, you are wearing the Indian jersey and it is very special. The World Cup experience is all the more special as it happens once in four years and being named in the fifteen-member Indian squad, I am very happy about it," Shankar said.

Shankar who has been bogged down by injuries in the past said he has learnt a lot from those hiccups and he has come back stronger.

"It is a very good journey, to be honest. The most important thing is that I had many injuries in the past and I missed a lot of cricket. But these injuries taught me a lot of things, how I should focus when I was in the rehab and lot of many other things," Shankar said.

The 28-year-old Shankar played for the Hyderabad in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL).

The player said he plays every match with the same intensity and looks to take something out from the match.

"So wherever I play, I try to play with the same intensity. Every game I play, I try to make sure I get something out of that match. So as a cricketer I feel, you have to move forward and keep believing in your ability," Shankar said.

Shankar believes that it is his duty to learn from the senior players in the team as they have more experience of playing in every type of situations.

"Someone like him (MS Dhoni) has done a lot for the country, He has won many matches for the team. It is important for me to learn many things from him. Everyone in our team has achieved a lot of things and I should learn from everyone. Mahi bhai, has played in every type of situations, so it's my duty to learn from him," Shankar said.

Excited for my first World Cup, says Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal

India's spinner Kuldeep Yadav believes he wouldn't have been successful at the world stage had it not been for skipper Virat Kohli, who gave him the freedom to attack.

"You need a skipper who backs you and believes in your ability to shine on the big stage. You think we could have been so successful if Kohli bhai had not given us the freedom to attack? I don't think so," Kuldeep told PTI in an interview.

Kuldeep, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders, was badly let down by the batting-friendly conditions at Eden Gardens in this year's IPL as he returned with just four wickets from nine matches before being dropped by his franchise in the business end of the tournament.

The 24-year-old said he is looking forward to put the IPL disappointment behind with a spectacular performance in the upcoming World Cup beginning May 30.

"IPL is very different than World Cup. There are players who have done well in IPL but have struggled to make a mark for the country. I've matured as a bowler and by no means it will affect my performance in the World Cup," Kuldeep said.

"It's (T20) such a format, you may have a bad day where you're hit for runs. I'm not a magician who will do well in every match. You cannot say I will take so many wickets."

By his own standard, an average of 71.50 in IPL is something he would look to forget.

"If I'm not getting wickets it does not mean I'm not bowling well. Now I play as a mature cricketer and think more about the team," Kuldeep said.

Kuldeep also spoke about the recent controversy about his comments on Mahendra Singh Dhoni that sometimes the former skipper "goes wrong" with his tips.

"How can a youngster like me make such comments on a senior member of the side? My comments had been misinterpreted by media to create a controversy," he said.

"There is no doubt that his tips have been invaluable not only for me but for the entire team. His presence behind the stumps makes our job easy and nobody can change that fact. We wouldn't have been half as effective without his inputs."

Andre Russell was a terror in the IPL with his batting exploits and single-handedly turned KKR's fortunes before they failed to make the playoffs.

Kuldeep said he has learnt a few tricks which he would employ against the West Indian in the World Cup.

"He has some problems facing a turning ball. If the ball is turning, then he has a weakness. It's not just this, I've different plans to unleash against him in the World Cup. I know how to stop him and I'm very clear in my mind," he signed off.

Indian World Cup team lacks one more quality fast bowler: Gautam Gambhir

Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly picked Pakistan alongside India, Australia and England as the four semifinalists in the upcoming World Cup, saying their records in world tournaments in England is remarkable.

England has been a 'lucky' venue for Pakistan, who had won the 2017 Champions Trophy beating India and had also bagged their maiden World Twenty20 title in 2009.

"Pakistan's record in world tournaments in England is remarkable. They won the Champions Trophy two years ago, they won the 2009 World T20 in England", the former captain added.

He also cited the recent example of Pakistan's second ODI against England, in which they almost chased down a mammoth 374 before going down by only 12 runs.

"Pakistan always play well in England. You see the last game in England. England got 374 and Pakistan just lost by 12 runs. They also beat England in England in Test matches there because of their bowling lineup", Ganguly said.

Ganguly, however, was quick to add that Virat Kohli's men should not be wary of Pakistan and they would prove to be strong contenders.

"I don't believe in records. Both of them will have to play well on that particular day. India will be a very good side. They will be very hard to beat. A team which has the likes of Kohli, Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan can't be weak", Ganguly said.

Asked to compare this team with that of his team of 2003 that lost to Australia in the final, Ganguly said, "Both the teams are of different generations. We played the final in 2003. I hope they play the final and win it.''

"Indian cricket is so strong. And we have been strong for the last 25-30 years. Every world competition that we play, we will have a chance. This team has as much chance as we had in 2003", he added.

Starting as one of the favourites, India would be under tremendous pressure but Ganguly felt it would bring out the best from Kohli and Co.

"So it's good that India is under pressure, every other team in the World Cup will be under pressure. You don't want to turn up like a Nepal or an Ireland where the entire world thinks that you're not going to win'', the former captain said.

"You rather turn up like an India or an Australia or an England where everybody says this team is going to win the World Cup. So Virat, probably being the best player of the world at the moment, is as much under pressure as anybody else and that will be good for him because he will turn up, work hard, he will be pumped and get India going", Ganguly added.

Ganguly said it would be an interesting World Cup as all 10 teams will play each other before the best four qualify for the knockouts.

"This team has as much as an opportunity. It's a great World Cup because all 10 teams play against each other and the best four qualify. There are strong teams and you realise England, Pakistan, West Indies all can win'', Ganguly said.

"So it's good that India is under pressure because it will help them perform and it's going to be exciting 55 days of cricket," Ganguly added.

In a first, all the 10 participating teams of the upcoming ODI World Cup will have a dedicated anti-corruption officer attached with it to deliver a corruption-free tournament, according to a report.

The report in the 'Daily Telegraph' said the ICC will attach an anti-corruption official with each team starting from warm-up matches till the end of the tournament.

"By being with teams throughout the competition, it is also thought that anti-corruption officials will be better placed to spot any potential corruptors who lurk near players or back-room staff and so identify any behaviour that may be suspicious," the report further stated.

Smith and Warner have returned from year-long bans following a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa which also prompted Lehmann to step down as coach of the side in March last year.

The top order duo made an impressive return from elbow surgeries for their respective franchises at the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament and Lehmann was convinced they will shine at the World Cup in England and Wales.

"People are worried about the break they've had with 12 months out, but you see them in the IPL performing and making runs'', Lehmann added.

"David Warner is an excitement machine, at the top of the order, he can set it alight. If he has a really good tournament, he set us on the road to winning a lot of games in the last World Cup. If he does it again at the top of the order with Aaron Finch, they'll be hard to stop", Lehmann said.

England and their narrow Cricket World Cup misses! Will the Eoin Morgan-led side win this time?

Australia coach Justin Langer said his team won't be rattled by a hostile reception at the World Cup as England's Barmy Army gave them a taste of what to expect.

The defending champions are on a hot run of one-day form and have been boosted by the return of Steve Smith and David Warner after their one-year bans for ball-tampering.

But a trip to England is never easy, and the visit for the World Cup -- followed by an Ashes Test series -- is shaping up to be even more challenging than usual after the cheating row.

England's fiery Barmy Army supporters rarely need much incentive to get stuck into their arch-rivals and got the ball rolling on Twitter Thursday with a brutal pot shot.

In a taste of what to expect from British crowds, they doctored an image of Warner's official World Cup player portrait, replacing 'Australia' on the front of his shirt with 'Cheats'.

They also photo-shopped Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon holding sandpaper.

Smith, Warner and Cameron Bancroft were all banned over the scandal last year in Cape Town involving sandpaper to alter the ball.

"We're ready for it, If we're under siege the second we get off the plane, we're ready for it", Langer told SEN sports radio late Thursday.

"The World Cup might be a bit different to start off, but certainly once the Ashes kicks off there will be plenty of commentary", he added.

Warner returned to the Australian team this week after prolific form at the Indian Premier League, while Smith stroked an unbeaten 89 in Brisbane against a New Zealand XI on Wednesday.

Langer said Warner "has got this look in his eye at the moment" while praising Smith's innings as a "tutorial in batting".

"It's great for the team, I can honestly say I don't think we could be in a better position'', he added.

"It's a bit like facing fast bowling, you worry, worry, worry and once you get out in the middle, it's ok. The worst time to face fast bowling is in bed the night before", Langer said.

"There's been a huge lead-up to this (Smith and Warner's return) and the boys have come in so far quite seamlessly", Australian coach said.

Heading into this week's 'unofficial' three-match one-day practice series against a New Zealand XI, Australia had won eight one-dayers on the trot, against India and Pakistan.

They won the opening match against New Zealand before losing the second.

The games are not counted as full internationals.

"My main concern is we've had a month's break at the end of the Pakistan series," Langer said.

"Guys were weary at the end of long taxing summer but we were match-hardened and battle-hardened and had a great sense of confidence. We're working back up towards it. That's why we're having these practice games", Langer added.

Hope has been in tremendous form in the ongoing tri-nation series against Bangladesh and Ireland.

The batsmen recorded his career-best score of 170 runs in the opening match against Ireland and along with fellow opener John Campbell, he registered the highest ever ODI opening partnership of 365 runs.

"I'm happy with how things have gone so far. I think the guys have been working really hard, they`ve been very disciplined. "We saw Jos (Buttler) coming back into the test side last summer after a brilliant IPL. The competition over there can only improve your skills. I genuinely think I'm still learning and improving", he added.

England batsman Jonny Bairstow said he would rather win the 50-overs World Cup than the Ashes series against Australia if he was given the chance to claim only one. World Cup returns to England and Wales after 20 years and Bairstow said England deserved to win their maiden title after all the hard work they had put in over the past two years to become the number one ranked one-day team. "I am going (to pick the) World Cup because it's been so long since we've had an opportunity to win one," Bairstow told Sky Sports. "I think that the amount of work that has gone into this group of players over the last couple of years, building and building, I firmly believe we've put an amount of effort in that gives us the best chance. Guys have worked day in, day out, taking their games to places that they weren't at 18 months, two years ago. That's from the vision Morgs (England captain Eoin Morgan) has had and the way we are playing our one-day cricket", said the England batsman. Bairstow also credited the Indian Premier League (IPL) for sharpening his skills and improving his form ahead of the World Cup. England's Jonny Bairstow picks World Cup glory over Ashes win

The 22-year-old, who made his one-day international debut in January last year, will be replaced by namesake Kane Richardson after failing to recover from a shoulder dislocation he suffered playing against Pakistan in March.

"This is obviously very disappointing news for the team and for Jhye, who has been exceptional throughout his rehabilitation process," team physiotherapist David Beakley said in a Cricket Australia news release.

"After his most recent assessment and attempting to bowl in the nets, it was clear that Jhye was not progressing as fast as required and therefore, in consultation with selectors, we made the decision to withdraw him from the squad.

"Jhye will continue with his rehabilitation and we will look to resume bowling in the coming weeks," Beakley said.

Kane Richardson, who has taken 29 wickets in 20 ODIs, was already at the pre-World Cup training camp in Brisbane and got the nod over test paceman Josh Hazlewood, who is on the comeback trail after a back injury.

Hazlewood was a key member of the team that won the World Cup in 2015 but will also be vital to Australia's hopes of winning the Ashes series in England that follows the World Cup.

Australia's first match in their World Cup title defence is against Afghanistan in Bristol on June 1.

Revised squad:

Aaron Finch (captain), Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Lyon, Adam Zampa.
