England captain Eoin Morgan said the side let themselves down with poor fielding in their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pakistan-stun-england-by-14-runs-in-cricket-world-cup-224013">14-run loss to Pakistan in the World Cup</a> at Trent Bridge on Monday.

After beating South Africa at The Oval in London last Thursday to get their campaign off to a winning start, the hosts and pre-tournament favourites narrowly failed to reach the huge 349-run target set by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/inept-to-inspiring-i-always-say-be-patient-with-us-says-captain-sarfaraz-after-beating-england-224025">Pakistan </a>in Nottingham.

Their fielding, in particular, was scrappy, with preventable boundaries and an important but relatively easy catch dropped by Jason Roy.

"We've gone from probably one of our best performances in the field at The Oval to not extremely bad, but it's cost us probably about 15 or 20 runs in the field, which is a lot in a one-day game," Morgan told reporters.

"Fielding is an attitude thing, so it's a matter of taking maybe our stand-off attitude today that we had in the field and getting it back to our positive attitude,&nbsp;going for everything, playing with that fearless nature, maybe taking a half chance instead of standing off a normal chance,'' Morgan said.

"You can play against a side that's better than you or just have an off day. Same with the ball. But when it comes down to the difference in the sides being in the field, it's even more frustrating," he added.

Nevertheless, Morgan felt the side had done a good job with their bowling and said the 130-run partnership between <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/englands-joe-root-scores-first-hundred-of-cricket-world-cup-2019-223998">Joe Root</a> and Jos Buttler had kept the game alive.

"They never really got away with us given that the wicket was good and the outfield was very fast. And when we recovered with the bat with that substantial partnership, we were never really out of the game probably until the early 40s over," Morgan&nbsp;said.

"There are some really good positives to take out of our batting and our bowling," added Morgan.

World Cup 2019: England skipper Eoin Morgan says fielding let team down in loss against Pakistan

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said his struggling side could still reach the World Cup semi-finals, even after talisman paceman Dale Steyn was ruled out of the tournament with a shoulder injury.

The 35-year-old fast bowler had been battling to be fit in time for Wednesday's crucial clash against fancied India in Southampton after two defeats in two matches for South Africa.

But the seamer has been forced to admit defeat, leaving head coach Ottis Gibson's side short of firepower.

"Steyn has suffered a second shoulder injury which has not responded to treatment and has ruled him out of bowling for the foreseeable future," Cricket South Africa said in a statement.

South Africa have called up left-arm pace bowler Beuran Hendricks as a replacement for the remainder of the tournament, with Lungi Ngidi also nursing a hamstring problem.

Paceman Anrich Nortje was ruled out with a thumb issue before the World Cup even started.

But Du Plessis said despite their injury problems and their poor start to the tournament, South Africa were aiming to reach the last four of the round-robin event, in which all 10 teams play each other.

"Six games is the target, and there's seven games left," the skipper told reporters during his pre-match press conference at the Ageas Bowl.

"It would be great if we could start that tomorrow. There's no easy games any more in the World Cup.... Whether it's winning or losing, the main thing is getting to the semi-finals."

South Africa, who have never won the World Cup, have endured a wretched start to the tournament, losing to hosts England by 104 runs then slipping to a 21-run loss to Bangladesh on Sunday.

Top-order batsman Hashim Amla returns for the India game after missing the second match following a hit on the head during the tournament opener against England.

Stay positive

Du Plessis said he it was important to stay "strong and positive" despite the challenge of working with limited resources.

"Naturally, guys will have a little bit of confidence that's been chucked away and that is normal, that is part of being human," he said.

Hendricks will arrive on Wednesday but will not be available to face India.

Du Plessis said he hoped Steyn's international career was not at an end.

"It's been a tough two-and-half years for him, and he would need support right now," he said. "The team and management will put things in place to look after him. He needs love at the moment, he tried really hard to get fit for this campaign."

Du Plessis admitted South Africa's injury problems had forced him to draw up a new plan.

"I think we'll really have to look at that now, there's only 14 players to pick from now. There's not a lot of options for the bowling attack," he said.

"You have to decide whether you go with all your all-rounders in your team, bat deep and try to get a big score."

India skipper Virat Kohli also sympathised with Steyn and wished his Indian Premier League teammate, for Royal Challengers Bangalore, a "speedy recovery".

Key players in India vs South Africa World Cup clash

Pakistan lived up to their 'unpredictable' billing by beating world number one <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pakistan-stun-england-by-14-runs-in-cricket-world-cup-224013">England in a World Cup match</a> on Monday, just three days after losing to world number eight West Indies in their first game of the tournament.

An aggressive Pakistan team turned up at Trent Bridge to deservedly beat pre-tournament favourites England by 14 runs.

It was in marked contrast to Pakistan's seven-wicket humiliation by the West Indies at the same venue on Friday.

Yet England, perhaps, should have seen it coming for all they beat Pakistan, who had lost their 11 previous completed one-day internationals, 4-0 in a recent series.

After all, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/englands-joe-root-scores-first-hundred-of-cricket-world-cup-2019-223998">2017 Champions Trophy in England</a> and Wales saw Pakistan start the tournament with a 124-run defeat by India only to thrash their arch-rivals by 180 runs in the final.

The lows and highs of Pakistan cricket were neatly summed by former England captain turned commentator Nasser Hussain.

"Pakistan cricket at its best, one minute down, next minute up," said Hussain when Azhar Ali dropped India captain and Virat Kohli off Mohammad Amir in the final and the very next ball Shadab Khan took a sharp catch to dismiss the star batsman.

Sent into bat by England on Monday, Pakistan posted their second highest World Cup total of 348 for eight, just one short of their score against Zimbabwe at Jamaica in the 2007 edition.

It was the complete opposite to the way they batted on Friday when they were shot out for 105 - their second-lowest World Cup total - by the West Indies pace trio of Oshane Thomas, Jason Holder and Andre Russell.

West Indies polished off the low target for the loss of just three wickets in a mere 13.4 overs, with Pakistan seemingly completely demoralised by the drubbing.

But amid a chorus of criticism from former players and fans back home, Pakistan roared back right from the start against England, scoring 69 without loss in the initial 10-over powerplay.

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed accepted his team could go from the inept to the inspiring in just a few days.

"That's the interesting thing about Pakistan, so I always say be patient with us," Sarfaraz told AFP after the match. "We told the players to show aggression against England and stage a strong comeback."

"I am happy that they did that," added Sarfaraz who made a valuable 55 in an innings where Mohammad Hafeez's 84 was the top score.

"The most important thing was to put a decent opening stand and once we did that we posted a good total and then the bowlers did very well," the wicket-keeper explained.

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur said last month that he and his backroom team were fed up with the cliched description of the team's form swings.&nbsp;

"'Unpredictable' –- that's a word that us as coaching staff hate," Arthur said.

Pakistan's performances in their first two matches of this World Cup indicate, however, they may have to live with the tag for a while yet.

And Wasim Akram, a member of the Pakistan side that heeded the words of then captain and now prime minister Imran Khan to "fight like cornered tigers" as they came back from the brink of elimination to win the 1992 World Cup, suggested that perhaps they just ought to embrace it.

"Even I don't know why we are so unpredictable for so many years," the left-arm fast-bowling great said at Trent Bridge on Monday.

"But it's the beauty of Pakistan cricket and why people follow the team."

List of challenges Team India faced ahead of World Cup campaign opener

Jason Roy and Jofra Archer have each been fined 15 per cent of their match fees for incidents during <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-2019-england-skipper-eoin-morgan-says-fielding-let-team-down-in-loss-against-pakistan-224075">England's World Cup defeat by Pakistan</a> at Trent Bridge.

The International Cricket Council found opener Roy had breached level one of its code of conduct, using an audible obscenity after a misfield during Pakistan's innings.

Fast bowler Archer was found guilty of dissent towards an umpire's decision following a wide delivery.

Both players have also had one demerit point added to their records.

Pakistan won Monday's match by 14 runs after setting England a target of 349.

It was an occasionally fractious encounter, with the umpires warning England skipper Eoin Morgan about his side throwing the ball in on the bounce and later issuing the same reminder to Sarfaraz.

The tactic is often used to scuff up the ball and promote reverse swing.

Morgan said,&nbsp;"There were discussions throughout the whole of the two innings. The umpires came to me mid-innings and seemed to think that we were throwing the ball in on the bounce too much or it was being over-exaggerated.

England batsman Jos Buttler appeared to take a look at the ball on his walk back to the pavilion after his knock of 103 came to an end.

"They emphasised it would be the same for both. The conversations that were stopping the game were that Pakistan were&nbsp;doing the same thing,'' Morgan said.

"Jos was just intrigued to see the ball. When the ball is hit against the LED boards it does scuff it up quite a lot so he was just interested to see if the ball was more scuffed up," the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/englands-joe-root-scores-first-hundred-of-cricket-world-cup-2019-223998">England </a>captain added.

South Africa's troubles compounded after young fast bowler Lungi Ngidi was ruled out of the team's next World Cup game against India here Wednesday.&nbsp;

Ngidi had suffered a left hamstring injury during <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bangladesh-beat-south-africa-by-21-runs-in-cricket-world-cup-223723">team's defeat against Bangladesh on Sunday</a> and hobbled out of the field bowling only four overs.

"Ngidi suffered a sharp discomfort in his left hamstring. We decided he had a hamstring strain. He will be out for at least week to 10 days," team doctor Mohammed Moosajee told the media persons after the match against Bangladesh at the Oval.

"He will have a scan tomorrow and hopefully ready for the West Indies game."
Ngidi has had injury issues having missed IPL due to a side strain while playing a home series against Sri Lanka.

Ngidi's ideal replacement should be Dale Steyn provided he gets fit in time. Steyn bowled a couple of overs in the nets but there is still no clarity on his availability for the India game.

If Steyn doesn't make it, all-rounder Chris Morris could possibly be an ideal replacement candidate.

There was however some positive news for the Proteas as senior batsman Hashim Amla seems to have recovered from the concussions suffered after being hit in the helmet by Jofra Archer.

"The plan is to have him ready for the India game in Southampton. His initial reports on concussion was inconclusive. The next test showed he could bat. However he felt some symptoms and was rested for the Bangladesh game," Moosajee said.

World Cup: South Africa aim to bounce back against injury-stricken Bangladesh

Bangladesh's injury woes continued with opener Tamim Iqbal suffering a wrist injury while batting in the nets ahead of their opening <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/i-am-a-fast-bowler-thunders-andre-russell-after-startling-pakistan-in-their-world-cup-opener-223332">World Cup</a> match against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-were-better-than-us-in-all-facets-of-the-game-says-faf-du-plessis-after-defeat-in-world-cup-2019-opener-223068">South Africa</a> at The Oval here on Sunday.

The experienced left-handed batsman was immediately rushed to the dressing room along with physio Thian Chandramohan after being hit on his left wrist during the practice session.

He is expected to undergo a precautionary X-ray.

"It's too early to say anything specific but we will have an X-ray and if there is a fracture, then he won't be available," selector Habibul Bashar said.&nbsp;

"But if that is not the case, then we can hope he will be available for the opening game,"&nbsp;Bashar said.&nbsp;

Tamim is Bangladesh's batting mainstay, having played at the 2007 World Cup. He played an important role by blasting two fifties during their tri-series ODI win in Ireland earlier this month.

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell reminded that he is a fast bowler to all who are only in awe of his incredible power-hitting.&nbsp;

"A lot of people have been saying I'm in the team as a big-hitting batter but they don't remember I'm a fast bowler," said Russell after the World Cup match against Pakistan.

Russell returned with figures of 2/4 in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/west-indies-beat-pakistan-by-seven-wickets-in-cricket-world-cup-223250">West Indies' seven-wicket thrashing of Pakistan</a> at the Trent Bridge, starting their campaign in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-world-cup-2015-firmly-behind-kane-williamsons-new-zealand-as-they-reunite-with-sri-lanka-223318">World Cup</a> on a high note.

"I think they underestimate me. I've been jealous in the past couple of years because people have me down as a medium-pacer. When I see 'Andre Russell' come up on the big screen and I see 'medium-pacer', I'm like, who are they talking to?" said&nbsp;Russell.&nbsp;

"Actually, I'm annoyed. Who's responsible for that stuff should change medium-pacer to fast."

Russell lit up the Indian Premier League with a flurry of fours and sixes, the incredible hitting drowning the fact that he can also bowl fast.

"At the end of the day I've shown them I can bowl 90mph. I think they should put some respect by my name. Today, when you turn up and see a (bouncy) pitch like that, it gives you a vibe to bowl fast, an energy to bowl fast," he added.&nbsp;

Russell is confident he will be fit for the side's second match against Australia on June 6, despite limping heavily after his match-turning spell in the thumping win.&nbsp;

"I've been playing for years with these knee injuries," Russell said after the match.

"And sometimes it feels worse than some days but, at the end of the day, I'm a professional. I know what to do to get back. I think I have five days before the next game so that is more than enough time to get my knee back to normal and get it settled,'' he said.

"Let's just see what happens. I have a good physio team, massage team, here so they're going to be working with me closely for the next couple of days," Russell said.&nbsp;

"A lot of people have been saying I'm in the team as a big-hitting batter but they don't remember I'm a fast bowler," said Russell after the World Cup match against Pakistan. Russell returned with figures of 2/4 in West Indies' seven-wicket thrashing of Pakistan at the Trent Bridge, starting their campaign in the World Cup on a high note. "I think they underestimate me. I've been jealous in the past couple of years because people have me down as a medium-pacer. When I see 'Andre Russell' come up on the big screen and I see 'medium-pacer', I'm like, who are they talking to?" said Russell. "Actually, I'm annoyed. Who's responsible for that stuff should change medium-pacer to fast." Russell lit up the Indian Premier League with a flurry of fours and sixes, the incredible hitting drowning the fact that he can also bowl fast. "At the end of the day I've shown them I can bowl 90mph. I think they should put some respect by my name. Today, when you turn up and see a (bouncy) pitch like that, it gives you a vibe to bowl fast, an energy to bowl fast," he added. Russell is confident he will be fit for the side's second match against Australia on June 6, despite limping heavily after his match-turning spell in the thumping win. "Let's just see what happens. I have a good physio team, massage team, here so they're going to be working with me closely for the next couple of days," Russell said.

'I am a fast bowler,' thunders Andre Russell after startling Pakistan in their World Cup opener

New Zealand are confident wicket-keeper Tom Latham will be fit for their opening game of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-world-cup-2019-jofra-archers-impact-makes-england-an-even-tougher-force-223067">2019 ICC Cricket World Cup</a> against Sri Lanka on June 1.

The wicket-keeper's fitness had been a doubt after he broke his finger during a warm-up game in Australia earlier this month.

Latham trained fully for the first time on May 30 and said he felt no pain or discomfort as he batted in the nets and caught balls at full pace.

He remains on track to be available for selection for their first game.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead confirmed that signs were positive for Latham, but said they still need to monitor him in the coming days.

"He's probably slightly ahead of time. So far Tom's reached all the milestones that we've wanted him to, and today was another step, taking balls with more heat on them and making him dive and jump around a wee bit more. It's a bit bent from what happened, but he's had no pain so far, which means the bone has knitted back well," Stead said in a press conference.

Explaining the condition of his finger, Latham said, "It's nice to get through training but we'll still wait and see how it pulls up tonight and tomorrow.

"If Latham needs more time to nurse his injury, the Kiwi side will call up their back-up keeper Tom Blundell, who is yet to make his ODI debut.

Blundell scored a century in New Zealand's second warm-up match against the West Indies.

"He played a fantastic inning. Even the way he went in Australia before we came over here, he's certainly hitting the ball really well and the ball looks like it's going into the gloves nicely. It's a nice confidence boost for him to get some runs against a good West Indies attack and Australia as well," said Latham.

South Africa captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/south-africa-outplayed-but-not-downbeat-says-faf-du-plessis-222986">Faf du Plessis</a> lauded England saying the host were better than them in all three facets of the game.

However, he stressed to put the first loss behind and focus on Proteas'&nbsp;next ICC Cricket World Cup game.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-beat-south-africa-by-104-runs-in-cricket-world-cup-opener-222946">South Africa were handed a 104-run defeat</a> at the hands of Eoin Morgan-led England in the curtain raiser of the 50-over tournament at the Oval.

Chasing a challenging total of 312, the Proteas were bundled out on 207 inside 40 overs.

"This is where it's important for us to make sure that you look at the World Cup for what it is. You know, you`re going to play games. You're going to come up against quality opposition. England was better than us in all three facets of the game. They show why they are such a good cricket team, and now we have to look at the league. It's a league competition," ESPNcricinfo quoted du Plessis as saying.

"As disappointed as we are with our performances today, you have to make sure you learn from it quickly and put every single dart to bed because there is the next game and you have to make sure you play good cricket again," he added.

Having known that England have a long batting line-up, South Africa restricted the host for 311/8.

The Proteas conceded just 76 runs in the last 10 overs, which made it seem the du Plessis-led side had won half battle.

One of their go-to bowlers, Lungi Ngidi picked up three wickets, including ending the innings of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-ben-stokes-takes-mind-boggling-catch-to-dismiss-andile-phehlukwayo-222966">Ben Stokes</a> for 89.

Veteran leg-spinner Imran Tahir and Kagiso Rabada returned with two wickets each.

"Yeah, I thought after the first half, that we did a good job with the ball. You know, as I said before this game, England more so than any other team in this World Cup, bat longer than anyone else. So if you can stop them with the long batting line-up you have, then you`re doing a great job with the ball," the South Africa captain said.

"For them to score as little runs as they did the last 15 overs and us picking up as many wickets as we did, was a great achievement by our bowling units. But yeah, as I said, 310 is still a big score, so what you need to do is you need to start well, and we didn`t have that luxury," he noted.

The chase looked achievable until Hashim Amla retired hurt after getting hit by a Jofra Archer bouncer.

The setback disrupted the South Africa batting and a wobble took place too before Quinton de Kock held his nerves to rebuild the side.

In the 23rd over, Liam Plunkett dismissed de Kock which broke the backbone of South Africa.

Amla returned to bat but it was too late as his side was at 180/7 and eventually South Africa folded.

"When you are chasing a big score like 310 what you need is a good start. You need to make sure that you settle the bats in the dressing room with a good partnership, whether it's zero down or one down, but a good start is really important and obviously with him (Amla) coming off, and then a few overs later, Aiden (Markram) got out and then one or two overs later, I got out. When you go three-down on a big score like that, you're making it really tough for our batting unit to perform. And then the score just looks big. It looks too far," du Plessis said.

England were better than us in all facets of the game, says Faf du Plessis after defeat in World Cup 2019 opener

Australian opening batsman David Warner's participation in the team's opening <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/south-africa-outplayed-but-not-downbeat-says-faf-du-plessis-222986">World Cup</a> match hangs in the balance as the player suffered from a sore glute in Australia's warm-up match against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-world-cup-2019-jofra-archers-impact-makes-england-an-even-tougher-force-223067">England</a> on May 25.

The left-handed batsman needs to be cleared by the medical staff to take part in the team's opening match against Afghanistan on Saturday.

Australs head coach Justin Langer said that the fitness test of Warner would be conducted on Friday as they don't want to make a decision on the match day.

"We'll have a pretty good idea today. But what I have expressed to him is it's really important to be fair to the other players, we don't want to be getting to Saturday morning and making a call, when a couple of other guys are wondering if they are going to play or not going to play," cricket.com.au quoted Langer as saying on Friday.

"The earlier we can make the decision, the better. Hopefully, we can make it tonight where he says 'yep, I'm ready to go', or 'I'm not sure'&nbsp;if he pulls up sore in the morning," he added.

Warner would come out to bat as an opener if he is able to prove his fitness.

If he is not fit enough to take part in the match, one of Usman Khawaja or Shaun Marsh will open the batting alongside skipper Aaron Finch.

Langer said that Warner is, however, 'desperate to play'&nbsp;in the match, but the team does not want to rush him.

"He's obviously desperate to play. Like all 15 players would, he is jumping out of his skin, his energy is up and he's laughing a lot, which is a really good sign," Langer said.

"But we've just got to make sure he can move, particularly in the field.

Batting seems okay, running in a straight line seems okay, but going side to side - we've just got to make sure we don't aggravate it," he added.

Australia won both their warm-up matches against England and Sri Lanka ahead of the World Cup.

David Warner's fitness a concern ahead of Australia's opening World Cup 2019 match

Up front, seated a few feet away behind a table as he addressed the media gathered inside the basement of The Oval a day before the ICC Cricket World Cup begins, Faf du Plessis looks like he’s aged.

It’s not a slight. It’s in the context of his cricket; where he’s reached, what he’s gone through leading South Africa through some good times and some tough times, and of where he sits today. It is visible in the creases on his face and the way he his eyes slit when he emphasises certain words.

Du Plessis is only 34, but he looks like he’s been through a lot more.

In the context of where he and the South African cricket team are a day before the World Cup opener at The Oval against host and top-ranked England, du Plessis did not try and mask his emotions when asked about what he feels right now, about his career and his drive.

This is du Plessis’ third World Cup, and first as captain. Asked before the opener about about how he’s changed as a cricketer and individual, his answer was revealing: “Like anyone sitting here today, whether you’re playing cricket or in business or in life or in sport, it’s no different. You know, the older you get, the wiser you get. You know, being a father now, everything gets put into perspective.

“Cricket is a very important aspect of all of our lives, but it’s not everything. You know, life, there’s a lot more bigger things than winning and losing games of cricket. And that, perhaps, has changed for me. The fact that I’m no longer desperate; I want to win cricket games but I don’t need to win them.

“I think as a team, hopefully that can filter through, because no one taught me that four, five years ago, playing in these events, and hopefully that gives the guys on the rest of the team just a little bit more of a relaxedness to them; that the absolute worst-case scenario, you don’t make it, and that’s okay, life will go on. And if players are a little bit more free, and can just play their best version of themselves, then that’s great. That’s all I’m looking for.”

This should not come as bad news for South African cricket fans. Far from it. Du Plessis’ response reveals his state of mind, and it is refreshing. This is a game, after all, not war.

For du Plessis, winning cricket games at the World Cup is the target, definitely. The difference now, as leader and a senior statesman, is his outlook on the sport.

“As I’ve said, a lot of times my most enjoyable times playing cricket is when I do captain any cricket team, and especially this one,” continued du Plessis. “I’m just excited that it’s another opportunity for me to go and do that. You know, get my brain nice and active on the field and tactically thinking about the game all the time. I just feel that puts me in the space that I want to be playing cricket, so it’s just another opportunity for me for me to do it.”

South Africa have, surprisingly, flown under the radar in the buildup to the World Cup. Ever since their reintroduction to international cricket in 1992, not a World Cup has gone by where South African teams have not been spoken of highly. But from 1992 to 2015, their ending at the tournament has come in heart-breaking scenes.

This team is ranked third in ODIs. In 2019, they’ve swept Sri Lanka 5-0 and beaten Pakista 3-2, all at home. South Africa will be without Dale Steyn for game one of the World Cup, with the veteran fast bowler not 100% fit. The team is putting a lot of faith on the sturdy shoulders of Kagiso Rabada, ranked five in ODIs but playing his first World Cup. Hashim Amla‘s inconsistent form is not a worry, says du Plessis, after the veteran scored half-centuries in both World Cup warm-up matches.

There are younger players like Aiden Markram and Andile Phehlukwayo, whom South Africa want to use to their maximum potential in the tournament.

For du Plessis, keeping the mood in the camp positive and “fun” is more important than getting carried away with pre-tournament chatter and expectations.

“For me as captain, it’s about making sure that we can try and put the noise to one side and just relax as much as we can, try and have fun, control the things that we can do,” he said. “You know, practise hard. Practise well. Have a good culture, have a good language in our culture, and then completely release the outcome and hopefully that frees up the players to play their best cricket.

“It’s just about making sure — there is probably a little bit more noise around a first game; there’s probably a little bit more noise because it’s a World Cup.”

Du Plessis, as captain and pivotal middle-order batsman, is intent on keeping the mood upbeat. In contrast to former captain AB de Villiers’ talk during the 2015 World Cup, du Plessis is not talking about the weight of history of pressure to win the tournament. He is focused on keeping the mood upbeat.&nbsp;

“Rreally, really excited to see the young guys, how well they are going to step up in this tournament, and then the older guys, yeah, as you said, some guys have stated that they finishing after this tournament, you know, but that’s not — that’s not the focus,” he said.

“For me, the focus on making sure that we can look at playing the style of cricket we want to do, and whether that guarantees success for some of the older guys or not, that’s not the focus. They are here to make sure that they enjoy every day as best as possible. I think when you get a little bit older, that becomes a little bit more natural. You take the pressure off. This is something I have to do or need to do to something that I love to do.

“So you go back to that younger version of yourself, so hopefully that will free some of the older guys up a little bit.”

Du Plessis’ statements today will draw mixed responses from fans of South Africa, but underneath what he says lies a refreshing positivity. Whether it remains positive is an aspect of this team that is sure to draw a lot of attention.

South Africa may be under the radar so far, but it won’t be the case from May 30.

“It’s just about making sure — there is probably a little bit more noise around a first game; there’s probably a little bit more noise because it’s a World Cup.” Du Plessis, as captain and pivotal middle-order batsman, is intent on keeping the mood upbeat. In contrast to former captain AB de Villiers’ talk during the 2015 World Cup, du Plessis is not talking about the weight of history of pressure to win the tournament. He is focused on keeping the mood upbeat. Watch: Jamie Alter's report from ground zero ahead of the opening match between England and South Africa × “Rreally, really excited to see the young guys, how well they are going to step up in this tournament, and then the older guys, yeah, as you said, some guys have stated that they finishing after this tournament, you know, but that’s not — that’s not the focus,” he said. “So you go back to that younger version of yourself, so hopefully that will free some of the older guys up a little bit.” Du Plessis’ statements today will draw mixed responses from fans of South Africa, but underneath what he says lies a refreshing positivity. Whether it remains positive is an aspect of this team that is sure to draw a lot of attention. South Africa may be under the radar so far, but it won’t be the case from May 30. Cricket World Cup 2019: There's a lot more bigger things than winning and losing cricket games, says Faf du Plessis

Biggest cricketing tournament, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-world-cup-2019-jofra-archers-impact-makes-england-an-even-tougher-force-223067">ICC Men's Cricket World Cup</a>, kicked off on May 30 and former cricketer and Committee of Administrators (COA) member Diana Edulji feels that India should focus on one game at a time in the premier tournament.

"The team should concentrate on one game at a time and should not think about the semi-finals and finals. This team has the capability. I am sure they will do it. It's a big tournament and a long tournament, you will have to play in every country. So, let`s hope for the best and good luck to the team India," Edulji told ANI.

Edulji feels that no team should be taken lightly in the tournament because a team can be favourite on paper but it all depends on how they perform on that given day.

"Every team is good. You cannot take any team lightly in this format. I think it is an open tournament. You may be favorite on paper but it's an open tournament. It also depends on how you play on that day. So I will not predict who is going to win or favorite," she said.

Edulji also expressed her thoughts on 2011 World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni and wished him all the best.

"I don`t wish it will be the last world cup for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-ms-dhoni-sets-field-for-bangladesh-while-batting-in-world-cup-warm-up-match-222476">MS (Dhoni)</a>, looking at his form, he will be 37. So why are we cutting, I played till the age of 40. I still feel if the team can deserve him nothing like that. I wish him all the very best and may he have the successful world cup," she said.

The 63-year old also opined over the highly-anticipated India-Pakistan clash but did not pick a side and said 'may the best team win.'

"I know India-Pakistan match generates a lot more interest and excitement but may the best team win and whoever will play good cricket on that day and sustain the pressure will come up," she said.

Smith and Warner, who are returning after serving suspensions for their involvement in the infamous ball-tampering episode in South Africa in 2018, have already witnessed hostile crowd during Australia's two World Cup warm-up games.&nbsp;

"I don't think they have got a point to prove, they will just be happy to be back playing for Australia," Lee said.

Lee said Australia are peaking just at the right time and Aaron Finch's men have it in them to win the title for the sixth time.

"We need a couple of good games back-to-back, it will be phenomenal if Australia can win a sixth title, I know what it means to win a World Cup and it is the best feeling in the world," Lee said at the official tournament opening ceremony here on Wednesday.

"I think they can (win it), I am quietly confident with the Aussies, they have got a great team, a great squad, they tick every box, they bowl pretty well at the death and they field pretty well. I would never back against the Aussies, put it that way.

"It's also about peaking at the right time when you go into a World Cup. I think Australia are doing that, although we haven't played a lot of great cricket back-to-back in the last 12 months," Lee added.

Renowned wax museum Madame Tussauds on Wednesday unveiled India captain Virat Kohli's statue at Lord's Cricket Ground here to mark the launch of the ICC World Cup. The wax statue of one of the world's leading batsmen will be on display at Madame Tussauds from Thursday until July 15, remaining at the museum for the duration of the World Cup. Steve Davies, General Manager at Madame Tussauds London, said, "Cricket fever is set to sweep the nation in the coming weeks so what better way to unveil our new figure of Virat Kohli than with the help of our neighbours at Lord's.'' "We hope that cricket fans will enjoy not only watching their hero on the pitch but taking to the crease with him here at Madame Tussauds London," Davies added. Pictured for the first time at the iconic Lord's, the statue is dressed in the official Indian kit as well as shoes and gloves donated by the sportsman himself. From Thursday onwards, Kohli will sit alongside legends such as Usain Bolt, Sir Mo Farah and fellow Indian cricket star Sachin Tendulkar. Tarah Cunynghame, Head of Retail & Tours at Lord's Cricket Ground, said, "Lord's is the perfect backdrop to reveal this fantastic figure of Virat Kohli on the eve of the Cricket World Cup. The anticipation of the exciting summer of cricket has already started, with thousands of visitors coming to the Ground and enjoying a tour of Lord's and around the MCC Museum. "The figure of the famous batsman will delight any cricket fans visiting Madame Tussauds London," Davies said. India eased to a 95-run victory over Bangladesh in their final World Cup warm-up match on Tuesday after centuries from Lokesh Rahul and Mahendra Singh Dhoni helped them post a mammoth total of 359.

Bangladesh won the toss and opted to field first but, despite removing openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma cheaply, they failed to take advantage of bowler-friendly conditions in the morning session in Cardiff.

The partnership came to an end with the dismissal of Rahul, who finished with 108 off 99 balls with 12 fours and four sixes.

Rahul made the squad as a back-up opener but he is also competing for the number four spot alongside all-rounder Vijay Shankar and wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik.

Bangladesh openers Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar made a steady start to the run chase before they were rattled by Jasprit Bumrah's double strike in the 10th over.

Sarkar was caught behind for 25 and Shakib perished to a perfect yorker for a first-ball duck.

Das (73) and Mushfiqur Rahim (90) offered some resistance with a 120-run partnership for the third wicket but they failed to step up the scoring rate against India's wrist spinning duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in the middle overs.

Das was dismissed by Chahal in the 32nd over, triggering a batting collapse as Bangladesh went from 169-2 to 216-8.

Both Chahal and Yadav finished with three wickets each as Bangladesh were bowled out for 264.

Kohli was pleased with his bowling unit ahead of their tournament opener against South Africa on June 5.

"Bumrah got us the breakthrough and Chahal and Kuldeep got us six wickets," he said.

"In the second half (in the coming matches), the ball might turn a little bit but initially the ball will swing and seam, which will be the most important phase," Kohli said.

MS Dhoni, KL Rahul hit tons as India beat Bangladesh in World Cup warm-up

Former England left-arm spinner Phil Tufnell on Wednesday labelled all-rounder Moeen Ali as 'truly fantastic' and said that the player gives the team fantastic depth and cited him as the key player in the upcoming Cricket World Cup.

"Moeen Ali is a truly fantastic all-rounder. Coming in later in the order, he would be as able as anyone to get a run-a-ball century, just as much as any of the lads at the top of the order," International Cricket Council (ICC) quoted Tufnell as saying.

"He gives us fantastic depth and bowls his off-spin very, very nicely. I see him as a lot more than a part-time bowler, he has got rid of that tag now. Ali is a genuine off-spin bowler for England now, and bowls it really well, so he is going to have a big role to play in those middle overs," he added.

Tufnell played 42 Test matches for England and took 121 wickets in them.

He believes that England has a very good chance of lifting the <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/steve-smith-shines-as-australia-edge-out-england-in-world-cup-warm-up-221710&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwicv-Tl5cDiAhUH3Y8KHSrjCKgQFjADegQIDhAC&amp;usg=AOvVaw3A3jlGTfBWL778aeOSwq99">World Cup</a> trophy this year.

He even said that the tag of 'favourites' will have no effect on Eoin Morgan-led side.

"People have been talking about the pressure of playing at home, but I see it as a good thing. The guys will feel at home with the conditions and pitches, having played at all these grounds before. And this time, they will be cheered on by that home crowd," Tufnell said.

"The best players in the world are here, and there is going to be some truly fantastic cricket. I think we are going to win it, but of course, I am going to say that," he added.

England was able to win their last warm-up fixture against Afghanistan by nine 9 wickets on Monday ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

However, the team had initially lost their opening warm-up match against Australia by 12 runs on May 25.

On the 500-run mark, Shai said that it is definitely a goal and they can achieve it at some point with the batting power they have.

"It is definitely a goal we can try to achieve at some point," Hope said.

"Definitely, it would be great to be the first team to cross that 500 mark, and I am sure we have the batting firepower to do it," said Shai Hope.

Talking about the team performance batting all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite said that the tailenders can't contribute the same as they played against New Zealand, Also, it depends on the intent, situation, and execution from the batsmen.

"However, in a real game, you probably won't have the depth in batting at 10 and 11 that we had today. So you need to be a little real about the target," said Carlos Brathwaite.

"But what I will say is the intent and the execution from batsman to batsman, situation to situation, believe it or not, there were some times when we consolidated. So that was beautiful. Just to play what was probably the perfect batting innings as a team. Hopefully, we can get 325 consistently. That is probably about par in these conditions. And then, the odd day we can get 400 and give the bowlers a little bit of leeway," added Brathwaite.

Further, Carlos applauds Andre Russell over his batting style and his big hitting capabilities.

"Russell is just incredible, a freak of nature, really. I don't really know what to say about him. He just hits it, and once he hits it, it goes for six. It is a pleasure to be on the same team as him, I can tell you that. If you are on the field, you are not sure what you are going to bowl at him. It is just nice to enjoy from the inside," said Brathwaite.

A big part of West Indies chances of making 500 is Andre Russell, who brought his unreal form in the Indian Premier League to this match.

He made 54 from 25 balls and had he stayed at the crease for longer, West Indies would have been looking at 450-plus.

West Indies will take on Pakistan in their opening match of the World Cup on May 31 at Trent Bridge.

West Indies miss 500-run mark in World Cup warm-up match agaisnt New Zealand

Sachin Tendulkar believes the quality of India's batting is sufficient to make up for the deficiency of left-handed batsmen in the lineup, the cricketing great told Reuters in a wide-ranging interview ahead of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=cricket+world+cup">World Cup</a>.

A left-right batting competition is of significant value in modern one-day internationals but two-time champions India&nbsp;have only one frontline southpaw in opener Shikhar Dhawan.

Spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja could make that two if he is picked in the playing side, but Tendulkar is confident the team have enough firepower to overcome the shortage of left-handed batsmen.

"Ideally left-right combination is something which disturbs the bowler's line and length and also the captain has to readjust his fielding," Tendulkar, 46, said in an interview ahead of the World Cup, which starts in England on Thursday.

"But if you have good quality batters, which we do, then it really doesn't matter whether it is a left-hand right-hand combination. We have some solid batters who can deliver the punch."

With the experienced partnership of Rohit Sharma and Dhawan locked in as openers and captain Virat Kohli coming in at first drop, the 1983 and 2011 champions have a top order the rival of any in the game.

But they will go into this year's World Cup with a soft underbelly having failed to settle on a number four, with KL Rahul the favourite to fill the position after his century in Tuesday's practice match against Bangladesh.

Following next in the batting order will be veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni, whose 341 ODI appearances makes him the most experienced player at this year's World Cup.

India's 2011 World Cup winning captain is considered the best finisher in contemporary cricket and his inputs from behind the stumps would be as important, said Tendulkar.

"It's important that someone who's standing behind the wickets has played for such a long time and has also led India and is in the best possible position to figure out what's happening off the surface," Tendulkar said.

"Whether the ball is stopping, bouncing, or skidding, whatever it is, he knows exactly how the ball is coming and he knows where the gaps are and how to close those gaps. His contribution and inputs are always going to be important.

"Other keepers also try and do the same thing but MS's experience is going to count a lot."

India boast of world's top-ranked ODI bowler in quick Jasprit Bumrah while wristspinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal also feature in the top 10.

Tendulkar, who remains the only cricketer to score 100 centuries across formats, played six consecutive World Cups from 1992 and holds the records for most runs and centuries in the tournament's history.

He is confident India have a "complete" bowling attack to win their third 50-over title.

"We have someone like Bhuvneshwar (Kumar) who swings the ball, (Mohammed) Shami who is skiddy off the pitch, Bumrah who is the number one bowler in the world in this format," said Tendulkar, a member of India's 2011 World Cup triumph at home.

"We have someone like Chahal and Kuldeep who are wristspinners. So there is variety also in the middle overs. Ravindra Jadeja can keep things tight.

"And we have supporting bowlers in Hardik (Pandya), Vijay Shankar and Kedar Jadhav. So all in all a well-balanced bowling attack I would say."

2019 Edition

The World Cup returns to the 10-team format to maintain quality of the competition after featuring 14 in each of the last two editions.

The decision was criticised by former players and associate nations, who are upset at being denied the chance to rub shoulders with the top sides of the world.

"Ideally if it's called the World Cup then the world should be participating. We need to find ways to engage more teams yet keep that standard of playing high," Tendulkar said.

"It's not going to happen overnight. We need to find ways to do that. I will love to see more than 10 teams participating but also at the same time not compromise on the standard of playing.

"It's going to be a lengthy process. Lesser teams should get more exposure to get ready for big tournaments."

India suffered the ignominy of being eliminated in the opening round of the tournament in 2007 while 2019 hosts England met the same fate last time the showpiece event was held in Australia and New Zealand four years back.

But this year's format -- which will see all teams playing each other with the top four advancing to the semi-finals -- will ensure teams have a shot at redemption, according to Tendulkar.

"This format still gives you a chance to come back. You are not out even before you wake up," Tendulkar said.

Here is the complete fixture of Cricket World Cup 2019:

India suffered the ignominy of being eliminated in the opening round of the tournament in 2007 while 2019 hosts England met the same fate last time the showpiece event was held in Australia and New Zealand four years back. But this year's format -- which will see all teams playing each other with the top four advancing to the semi-finals -- will ensure teams have a shot at redemption, according to Tendulkar. "This format still gives you a chance to come back. You are not out even before you wake up," Tendulkar said. Here is the complete fixture of Cricket World Cup 2019: "Sometimes it can be harsh. Since this is the World Cup, one would want to get another chance. If it's a bad day then you have time to recover and this format allows you to recover."

Southpaw shortage not a concern for India's batting: Sachin Tendulkar

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ms-dhoni-kl-rahul-hit-tons-as-india-beat-bangladesh-in-world-cup-warm-up-222416">KL Rahul's century</a> in Tuesday's warm-up match against Bangladesh suggested he could be the answer to India's search for a reliable number four batsman at the World Cup but the right-hander says he is happy to bat anywhere.

Two-time champions India continue to fret over the problematic batting position after a number of candidates failed their auditions in the buildup to the World Cup.

Chief selector MSK Prasad had made it clear that all-rounder Vijay Shankar was the first choice for the spot while Rahul, generally an opening batsman, was another option.

Batting at number four, Rahul managed only six in Saturday's warm-up match against New Zealand but followed it up with 108 off 99 balls in their 95-run victory in Cardiff.

Rahul's assured innings, which included 12 boundaries and four sixes, seems to have sealed the deal with Indian captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-mohammad-saifuddin-dismisses-virat-kohli-with-a-stunning-yorker-in-warm-up-match-222319">Virat Kohli</a> saying his contribution was the "biggest positive" from the game.

"I'm really happy with how I've bounced back and this gives me lots of confidence," Rahul told reporters after the game.

"Where I play is not for me to decide. It's a team game and you need to be flexible. You need to be ready to bat, whatever role you are given, you have to take what is thrown at you," Rahul said.

Rahul built a 164-run partnership for the fifth wicket with wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who scored a century of his own, to give India a commanding total of 359.

"(Dhoni) just dominated the spinners and is striking the ball so well. It's a great sign for us and it's just a pleasure to watch him from the other end when he is playing like that," Rahul added.

India begin their quest for a third World Cup title on June 5 when they take on South Africa at The Rose Bowl.

KL Rahul answers India's number four conundrum for World Cup with Cardiff ton

Hopes are pinned on a born-again West Indies to relive their glory days but skipper Jason Holder says the upcoming World Cup is "a case of creating our own legacy".

Windies have a proud history at the World Cup, winning the first two editions of the tournament and making the final of the third. After struggling for nearly two decades, a few stunning wins against England recently lifted their spirits.

"Not personally," Holder told the ICC when asked if he feels pressurised to re-establish their dominance, adding, "It's just a case of us creating our own legacy.

"We obviously know our history what the past players have done. We will take it stage by stage, step by step, not get too far ahead of ourselves." The presence of big players such as Andre Russell and Chris Gayle have helped, acknowledged the 27-year-old skipper.

"Guys like Andre Russell make it easy for me, they tend to give a lot of support. I can't thank them enough for the support they have given me, I know they continue to rally behind me.

"It's important for us to continue to build as a group. It's a relatively young side and we have got one or two experienced heads in the cam it's a good mix."

He has rated hosts England as the favourites in the showpiece.

"England are the number one side in the world for good reason, you now they are playing some very good cricket, lot of hype around them, they have obviously got the home advantage.

"I guess got to give them respect being the number side in the world ... All teams are practically equally matched, they are well-balanced sides, sides that can defeat anyone on any particular day.

"We have just got to take it game by game, give everyone the respect they deserve and we will have to execute our plans," Holder said.

"It's a dream," opener Evin Lewis was quoted as saying by the International Cricket Council's website when asked about the prospect of West Indies lifting the title.

"Everyone will be glad to be playing in the World Cup. When we won the T20 World Cup in 2016, it was a great feeling, just looking forward to the fifty-over World Cup this year. Hopefully, we can get over the line."

All-rounder Carlos Brathwaite, whose heroics won West Indies the World T20 title in 2016, echoed those sentiments.&nbsp;

"Being here with the team, preparing for the World Cup means a lot to me," he said.&nbsp;

"As I always say, putting on the West Indies shirt is always a great feeling and a privilege ? to do it on the world stage, with the ten best teams fighting it out for the trophy, is something special."

It's a case of creating our own legacy: Windies skipper Holder on World Cup

Defending champions Australia rode on Steve Smith`s century to beat England by 12 runs in a closely-fought World Cup warm-up match in Southampton on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 298 to win, England were bowled out for 285 in the final over but the tournament hosts will be more concerned about injuries than the result.

With<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-captain-eoin-morgan-to-have-x-ray-in-pre-world-cup-scare-221392"> captain Eoin Morgan</a> not playing due to a fractured finger, England had another scare when fast bowlers Mark Wood and Jofra Archer sustained injuries.

Wood was troubled by his left foot and bowled only three overs before leaving the field for treatment while Archer injured himself while sliding to save a boundary before returning 30 minutes later.

"Mark Wood is to have a precautionary scan," the England Cricket Board said in a statement, as reported by ESPN.

"England`s medical team want to ensure there is nothing serious in the build-up to the start of the World Cup."

Smith hit eight fours and three sixes in his 116 off 102 balls before he was caught and bowled by Tom Curran in the final over.

"To get 300 was superb," Australian skipper Aaron Finch said. "Steve played an unbelievable knock."

England`s Liam Plunkett conceded 69 runs in his nine overs but picked up four wickets -- including top-order batsmen David Warner (43) and Shaun Marsh (30).

"The pitch was slower than some of the pitches we`ve played on before," England`s acting captain Jos Buttler said. "It was still a good wicket, but didn`t have the pace it normally has."

England`s top scorer was James Vince, who hit a patient 64 off 76 deliveries before he was caught by Nathan Lyon attempting to cut a short ball. Buttler chipped in with a quick-fire 52 off 31 balls which included three sixes.
