A 26-year-old woman shared a shocking diagnosis she went through after she suffered a knee fracture while sitting on the toilet seat at her home.

According to a report published by New York Post, Bethany Eason had been experiencing knee pain for seven years and had been referred to a doctor.

The woman was advised to get an X-ray done of her knee. After checking the X-ray, the doctor told her there was "something there" and asked Eason to visit a therapist for treatment, stated the outlet.

In February 2017, the woman was facing extreme pain in her left leg while climbing the stairs. Later when she sat on the toilet seat, her knee bone fractured.

Giant cell tumour in knee

On visiting the hospital, Eason was informed it happened because of the presence of a giant cell tumour in her knee because of which her bones and surrounding soft tissue had weakened.

The diagnosis was earth-shattering and beyond Eason's imagination as she had just graduated from college.

"It just shattered,” Eason said, while speaking about her “one-in-a-million” happening. “I felt this immense pain and it was almost like a pop — it was really traumatic," she added.

Eason was informed by the doctors that she needs to undergo both a knee and thighbone replacement because of the tumour.

"I was heartbroken - I used to dance, run and swim and thought I would never be able to do those things again. At that moment in time you don't see a way out - I was told when I had surgery that 99 per cent of patients wouldn't have full mobility after surgery," she said.

However, defying the odds, Eason was able to regain full mobility. “I said, ‘Well, one per cent can and I can be that one per cent and prove you wrong,’ and I did,” said Eason.

She went through intense physical therapy for seven weeks and worked on strengthening her new leg for a year through home exercises and finally wore her pair of heels.

“I didn’t know what my life was going to look like. Now I can do all those things they thought I wouldn’t be able to — I can kneel and run after my little boy,” Eason further explained.

UK: Woman's knee bone shatters after sitting on toilet seat. Here's her shocking diagnosis

India's High Court in Kerala on Monday ruled that the right of autonomy over a person's own body is generally denied to women and that they are bullied, discriminated against, persecuted and isolated for making choices about their bodies as well as their lives. The High Court was discharging a women's rights activist who was facing charges under various provisions of POCSO.

Various charges were levied against activist Rehana Fathima under provisions of the POCSO, Juvenile Justice and the Information Technology (IT) Acts for sharing a video in which she was seen posing semi-nude in front of her minor, permitting them to paint on her naked body.

Justice Kauser Edappagath, discharging the activist from the case, said that the allegations fail to infer that her children were used for any simulated or real sexual acts, especially for sexual gratification.

The court stated that she only permitted her children to use her body as a canvas to paint on.

"The right of a woman to make autonomous decisions about her body is at the very core of her fundamental right to equality and privacy. It also falls within the realm of personal liberty guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution," it stated.

The order was given by the court after Fathima had filed an appeal against the decision of the trial court.

Protest against society's default view of female's naked upper body

The activist, in her appeal, stated that the body painting was a political statement against society's default view that the female's naked upper body is sexualised in all contexts, whereas the male's naked upper body is not seen as default sexualisation.

Agreeing with Fathima's contentions, Justice Edappagath stated that children painting on the mother's upper body as an art project "cannot be characterised as a real or simulated sexual act nor can it be said that the same was done for the purpose of sexual gratification or with sexual intent".

The judge stated that it was "harsh" to term such an "innocent artistic expression" as a way to use a child in a simulated or real sexual act.

"There is nothing to show that the children were used for pornography. There is no hint of sexuality in the video. Painting on the naked upper body of a person, whether a man or a woman, cannot be stated to be a sexually explicit act," the court stated.

"Nudity should not be tied to sex. The mere sight of the naked upper body of the woman should not be deemed to be sexual by default. So also, the depiction of the naked body of a woman cannot per se be termed to be obscene, indecent, or sexually explicit," Justice Edappagath stated.

India: Nudity of woman's upper body not always obscenity, says Kerala High Court

A young women's rights activist in Saudi Arabia was detained and imprisoned for having Twitter and Snapchat profiles that supported recent social advances while also demanding greater fundamental rights within the kingdom.

In November 2022, Manahel al-Otaibi, a 29-year-old certified fitness instructor and artist who regularly promoted female empowerment on her social media handles was detained. Saudi officials accused Otaibi, among other things, of using the hashtag #societyisready to push for an end to male guardianship regulations.

Otaibi is still being held without being convicted or punished. Previously, public demands for core women's rights, such as inheritance rights and the opportunity to leave a marriage with an abusive spouse, have been ruled seditious.

The case is the latest in a series of arrests and imprisonments of Saudis for using social media profiles to promote change or question Saudi authorities. Salma al-Shehab, a Saudi woman and former PhD student at Leeds University, was condemned to more than three decades in prison by a terrorist court for having a Twitter account and following and retweeting dissidents and activists.

Otaibi's social media handles present her as a young and progressive woman who enjoys fitness, art, yoga, and travel, as well as championing women's rights.

Accused of not wearing 'decent' clothes

As per court records, Otaibi is accused of not wearing "decent" clothing in addition to her usage of social media, which was reported to authorities by religious police. Pregnant woman escapes Sudan defying all odds, gives birth to 'Miracle Baby'

Saudi Arabia's Rayyanah Barnawi has become the first Saudi woman astronaut to venture into space. She, along with 3 others took off in Space X Falcon 9 rocket, headed towards the international space station. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket took off from the Kennedy space center at cape Canaveral of Florida.

Women achieve new heights every day, but some days the accomplishments are literally out of this world. Saudi Arabia is getting ready to launch its first female astronaut into space, six decades after the first woman was sent into space. Of course, better late than never.

Rayyanah Barnawi first Saudi woman to be on a space mission

Rayyanah Barnawi, the first Arab woman astronaut will go to space as part of Saudi Arabia's maiden space mission on May 21, as per reports citing the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). On board will be another Saudi astronaut, Ali al-Qarni. The two astronauts will go to the International Space Station in a historic space mission that will be launched from the United States. “I am honoured and happy to represent all the dreams and all the hopes of the people in Saudia Arabia. And also the hopes and dreams of all the women in the region,” said Barnawi in a pre-launch conference.

After delays, Axiom Space's Ax-2 first private mission would launch no later than May 21, according to a statement made earlier this month by NASA Space Operations. According to SPA, the astronauts will carry out 14 ground-breaking scientific experiments in microgravity that will aid in the development of new methods for creating circumstances that would allow people to explore space more effectively.

The astronauts will live-stream three educational awareness exercises to 12,000 Saudi youngsters. The outcomes are anticipated to not only strengthen the Kingdom's position in space exploration on a worldwide scale but also to boost Saudi research facilities and improve the field of space exploration.

Once completed, the trip will make the Kingdom one of the select few nations to have sent two astronauts to the International Space Station at the same time. According to SPA, the Kingdom's astronaut programme, which started in September 2022, is part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 ambitions to develop space research.

Saudi Arabia's first woman astronaut set to blast off into space on a private mission

A Chinese woman has been sued by a restaurant for $6,500 (Rs 5.3 lakh) as compensation for stashing her leftover food in her handbag and for wasting food by overordering, as per a report by the South China Morning Post. The woman visited the restaurant five times over the course of two weeks in August 2022 in the Guizhou region of southwest China, according to the restaurant manager who reviewed CCTV footage.

She covertly put leftovers into plastic bags, which she cunningly stashed in her handbag, after ordering more food than she could reasonably consume. The management asserts that this was not an isolated incidence because the woman had been frequenting the eatery regularly since March 2021.

Even though the cost per person was 218 yuan (about Rs 2,500), SCMP claims that Wen often bought more than 10,000 yuan (roughly Rs 1.1 lakh) worth of food, which was 10 times more than what most customers would typically consume at the buffet. As per reports, the restaurant has a policy in place that prohibits customers cannot take leftover food outside the premises.

Chen, the restaurant owner, claims that the woman also exclusively ordered pricey meals including salmon, goose liver, and sweet prawns.

On one bill, the woman paid for 140 servings of meat and dessert, as well as 45 servings of three sweet shrimps for 48 yuan (about Rs. 567) apiece and 20 servings of three salmon sashimi for 38 yuan (roughly Rs. 449 each).

Woman buys three houses for only '$3.30' in Italy. Here's how

A 95-year-old woman, who is a patient with dementia, suffered life-threatening injuries after she was tasered by a police officer at a care home in Australia.

The woman was admitted to the hospital. Police officers reached Yallambee Lodge in Cooma after they received reports of Clare Nowland carrying a knife.

The incident sparked an outcry as advocates called the action of police officers a “disproportionate response”. The New South Wales (NSW) police chief stated that she shares the concerns raised by the community and that an investigation is going on.

The police officers found Nowland in her room "armed" with a steak knife on Wednesday morning, said Assistant Police Commissioner Peter Cotter, while speaking to media on Friday.

He added that the care home staff and police officers made efforts to de-escalate the situation.

"At the time she was tasered, she was approaching police but it is fair to say at a slow pace. She had a walking frame, but she had a knife,” said Cotter during a press conference.

Nowland's family friend Andrew Thaler claimed she was struck twice, in the back and the chest, after which she fell and suffered a fractured skull as well as a serious brain bleed.

"The family are shocked, they're confused... and the community is outraged. How can this happen? How do you explain this level of force? It's absurd,” he added.

Community groups, which include People with Disability Australia (PwD) and NSW Council for Civil Liberties, have criticised the response of the police.

"She's either one hell of an agile, fit, fast and intimidating 95-year-old woman, or there's a very poor lack of judgement (from) those police officers," said PwD President Nicole Lee while speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"She needed somebody to... handle her with compassion and time, and not Tasers,” he added.

An investigation into the critical incident has been launched by NSW Police which Commissioner Karen Webb stated is being treated with "the utmost seriousness".

India: Scorpion bites woman on board Air India flight

The issue of human-animal conflict in the Kashmir valley has grown tremendously in the last few years, and that kept Kashmir's sole female wildlife conservationist Aaliya Mir extremely busy. Aaliya has been rescuing and rehabilitating wild animals for over 17 years.

She has become a household name in the Kashmir region after her videos of rescuing wild animals went viral a few years ago. She is Kashmir valley's first female wildlife rescuer and is also the programme head with Wildlife SOS Jammu and Kashmir.

Aaliya has been rescuing snakes, bears, birds, leopards, and other animals. However, her videos rescuing snakes from gardens, houses, schools and roads went viral and made her famous in the valley.

And it was not the team she worked with but the people on the ground which were a challenge to her. The people never at first believed that she was leading the team and always ignored her till they would see her rescue the animal.

''There are difficulties everywhere, but it also depends on the team you are working with. I can't be thankful enough to the almighty, that I have the best teammates and the working atmosphere was encouraging. The team did not make me feel that I am the only woman in the field.
"The challenge is when we go among the local people, there you feel that the people listen to men more over women. But I have been able to make that impression through my work. The people always thought I was just a part of the team, and some would even tell me to go home, but when they saw that I was leading the team and saw me work, the mindset would change within sometime after that. I am thankful to Allah that I have been able to break the stereotype and change the perception,'' said Aaliya Mir, Project Head, Wildlife SOS Jammu and Kashmir.

Aaliya is a postgraduate in science and mathematics and started her journey into the wildlife as a student only. I got the chances, and I utilised them in the best possible way. I am so content by doing this work, at the end of the day you are happy that you have been able to save a life, no matter how small or big. This work gives me a lot of happiness and satisfaction, '' said Mir.

Brown bear was a dream to see in the valley, but now you put out some waste outside and you will see a brown bear, why is this happening? Waste management is a failure, all wild animals get attracted to the waste. Leopards come as they see a lot of dogs near the waste dumps. That's why leopards are roaming in cities and not jungles.
The website Dictionary.com has announced ‘woman’ as its Word of the Year for 2022 since according to them it “continues to be a source of intense personal importance and societal debate”. In a statement, the website also said that the searches for the word “spiked significantly” several times during separate high-profile events.

“Our selection of woman…reflects how the intersection of gender, identity, and language dominates the current cultural conversation and shapes much of our work as a dictionary,” said the statement. Furthermore, the site also witnessed a noticeable increase in people looking for the definition of ‘woman.’

Dictionary.com, which defines ‘woman’ as “an adult female person”, said that the searches for the word at one point increased by more than 1,400 per cent which is a significant leap for such a common word. This resulted in double the typical annual search volume for the word overall.

The biggest spike was noted at the end of March after Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing who went on to become the first Black woman in the United States supreme court.
Furthermore, significant increases in searches were also noted when the US supreme court’s draft opinion to overturn Roe v Wade leaked in May. The trend continued till July when the court formally ruled on overturning Roe and thereby revoking the constitutional right to abortion in the country.

“Unsurprisingly, it resulted in both polarization and galvanization. That dynamic played out in November’s midterm elections, which upended trends and expectations,” said the website.
Additionally, key moments also included freedom protests led by women in Iran following the 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini's death who was allegedly in the custody of the government’s morality police. The statement also attributed the tennis player Serena William’s retirement announcement; ongoing debates about transgender athletes; WNBA star Brittney Griner’s arrest and subsequent release as some of the key events.

In Ireland, doctors removed 55 AA and AAA batteries from a woman's gut and stomach after she swallowed them in a deliberate act of self-harm.

According to a report published by the Irish Medical Journal on Thursday, the 66-year-old woman was getting treated at St. Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin after devouring an initially "unknown number" of cylindrical batteries, reports Science Alert

The doctor in their report said that this was the highest reported number of "batteries ingested at a single point in time."

The case perplexed the doctors as several reports published in medical journals mentioned instances of a child swallowing small, button-style batteries.

"The deliberate ingestion of multiple large AA batteries as a form of deliberate self-harm is an unusual presentation," the doctors reported.

In the most common cases of battery ingestion among kids, the batteries can sometimes pass through a child's body without causing damage. However, if they get stuck in the throat, they can cause severe and even life-threatening injuries, according to UCSF's Benioff Children's Hospitals.

This is because saliva kick-starts an electric current in the trapped batteries, spurring a chemical reaction that can burn the esophagus and can lead to severe tissue damage and bleeding.

"The potential of cylindrical batteries to result in acute surgical emergencies should not be underestimated," the case report states.

In the woman's case, an X-ray revealed that the batteries in her abdomen did not appear to be obstructing her gastrointestinal (GI) tract and no batteries showed signs of structural damage.

After a week of observation, the doctors performed laparotomy on the woman, in which surgeons made an incision to access her abdominal cavity. They found that the stomach, pulled down by the weight of the batteries, had become distended and stretched into the area above the pubic bone

They then cut a small hole in the stomach and removed the batteries from the organ.

Imagine you return from a nice vacation, are happy and content that your escape from everyday cycle was a fulfilling one. You unpack your suitcase planning to take out the souvenirs you bought and see 18 scorpions pop out. It is not known whether a woman in Austria was thinking about souvenirs she bought from her Croatia vacation (if she indeed buy) but she was nonetheless startled to see 18 scorpions when she opened her suitcase.

Newsweek reported that the woman lives in Natternbach in Austria, a city close to Linz. The 18 scorpions included a mother scorpion and her babies.

The woman, surely scared as hell, managed to take a picture of the arachnids and then called Tierhilfe Gusental, an animal rescue service which made a Facebook post in German.

“This afternoon, we were contacted by a lady from Natternbach because blind passengers had settled in her luggage on her Croatia trip,” says the FB post.

New York Post has reported that there are plans to send the animals to Croatia, their native country.

This is reportedly the third case of Croatian scorpions ending up in Austria. A woman in Linz found a scorpion in her apartment last month. The scary part is that the woman had been home for three weeks after her trip abroad before she discovered the scorpion.

A 26-year-old female cop is drawing a lot of attention in Pakistan. Not only because she is employed in a profession that is considered “manly” in a male-dominated country, but also because she belongs to the minority Hindu community.

Manisha Ropeta has become the first woman from the minority Hindu community in Pakistan to become a Deputy Superintendent of Police. She had cracked the coveted Sindh Public Service Commission exam to attain the top post.

Stating the reason why she joined the police forces, Ropeta was quoted as saying, “Women are the most oppressed and the target of many crimes in our society and I joined the police because I feel we need 'protector' women in our society.”

Ropeta, who belongs to a middle-class family from Jacobabad in interior Sindh province, wants to end the preconceived notion that girls with a good family background should not have anything to do with the police or district courts.

“From childhood I and my sisters have seen the same old system of patriarchy where girls are told if they want to get educated and work it can only be as teachers or doctors,” Ropeta said.

Though she is currently under training, Ropeta will be posted in the crime-infested area of Lyari, according to PTI news agency.

She feels that working as a senior police officer really empowers women and gives them authority.

Though she had aspirations to become a doctor initially, there was one turning point in her life that made her choose a different career.

“I had failed to clear MBBS entrance examination by one mark. I then told my family that I was taking a degree in physical therapy but at the same time I prepared for the Sindh Public Services Commission examinations, and I passed that getting 16th position among 468 candidates,” she added.

Her three other sisters are all doctors and her youngest brother is also studying medicine.

“I want to lead a feminisation drive and encourage gender equality in the police force. I myself have always been very inspired and attracted to the police work,” the DSP says.
