“It’s not really got that energy that you would expect from a healthy animal, so I’d say it’s resting, and I think at the moment it’s protecting one side of itself from any predators, positioning itself in a way that we might expect in an animal who’s not well and needs to rest,” Cugley was quoted as saying by The West Australian last weekend.

“At times, it became grounded on shallow sand bars, and it would swim off again, then it would get grounded again, so it’s concerning, and that’s why we need to fully assess its health,” he had added.

<h2>Whale seemed&nbsp;to be stressed out</h2>

The official added that the whale was stressed as it exhibited a higher respiration rate.&nbsp;

To keep the animal safe, wet and comfortable, authorities said they kept pouring water on it.

Kings Park will be home to the bold reimagining of Boorna Waanginy: The Trees Speak which attracted 300,000 people when it opened Perth Festival in 2017 and 2019. 
 
Boorna Waanginy: The Trees Speak will transform Kings Park with a display of light, sound and projections - telling the stories of Noongar culture and the beauty and biodiversity of Australia's SouthWest. The Supreme Court Gardens will play host to Song Circle, a live performance and celebration of Noongar song and dance set in a future-focused immersive wonderland.

The doors to Government House Gardens will also be opened to the public as it is transformed into Fire Gardens, a dreamscape of leaping flames, shadow and wonder. The event will be free to attend but will require a ticket to gain entry. EverNow event will run for an initial two years, with the intention for the event to become an annual staple on the State's major events calendar.

Drone footage captured this rare phenomenon as the whales tightly grouped together at Cheynes Beach, about 60&nbsp;km east of Albany before the tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday evening.&nbsp;

By the next morning, over 50 of the majestic creatures lay lifeless on the shore, leaving volunteers, government workers, and scientists scrambling to rescue the remaining 46.

Reece Whitby, WA's environment minister, shared that researchers across Australia were baffled when they witnessed the unprecedented behaviour of the pod before the stranding. He called the images "unique" and said, "It is pretty incredible from a scientific basis in terms of learning about strandings."&nbsp;

Whitby said that the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions sought advice from other jurisdictions that had experienced similar events, but the consensus was "We have never seen this before."

Efforts to save the stranded whales commenced with a rescue operation on Wednesday. Slings were deployed to drag the massive — about 1,000 kg and up to 4 metres long — animals back to the sea.&nbsp;

A massive team of more than 70 volunteers and 90 government agency staff working in shifts supported the whales, many of whom were weak and struggling to stay afloat in shallow water.&nbsp;

However, the attempt to coax some of the pilot whales into deeper waters later in the day was unsuccessful, and they beached themselves once again, reports The Guardian.

The animals were then dragged onto the sand, where they were carefully assessed by veterinarians from Perth Zoo and Albany, with animal welfare rather than rescue becoming the priority. Volunteers tirelessly poured buckets of water over the distressed whales in an attempt to alleviate their suffering.

<h2>Why did the whales choose mass stranding?</h2>

Murdoch University marine biologist Dr Joshua Smith speculates that since pilot whales share a tight-knit social network, it might explain why they stuck together during the incident.&nbsp;

As the rescue efforts continued, volunteers faced the bitter cold of the ocean, enduring temperatures that made their dedicated work even more remarkable.

Dr Vanessa Pirotta, a wildlife scientist from Macquarie University, speculated that illness or disorientation might be responsible for the unusual incident.

"The fact they were in one area very huddled and doing really interesting behaviours and looking around at times suggests something else is going on that we just don’t know."

However, even as experts investigate the cause of the stranding, the whales' behaviour remains an enigma.&nbsp;

Mass strandings of whales are distressing events that puzzle scientists and spark concern for marine conservation. Scientists baffled as pilot whales form a 'heart' before mass stranding in Australia

At&nbsp;least 51 pilot whales have died, hours after being stranded on a remote beach in Western Australia. Despite marine experts and&nbsp;volunteers attempting to return the pod of 70-odd whales back to the waters overnight, their efforts yielded no result.&nbsp;

"Sadly, 51 whales have died overnight after a mass stranding," Western Australia Parks and Wildlife Service said in a statement. "(We) are working in partnership with registered volunteers and other organisations to try to return the remaining 46 whales to deeper water during the course of the day."

The incident took place at Cheynes Beach, located more than 450 kilometres southeast of Perth. Initial reports after the&nbsp;

The mass stranding at the beach has forced the state authorities to launch a shark alert.

"It is possible dead and injured animals will act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming close into the shore along this stretch of coast," the state government's Shark Smart states, according to the Australian news outlet.

"While it's not uncommon for sharks to be present off the Western Australian coast throughout the year, people should exercise additional caution.

"Officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, along with staff from other agencies, are monitoring the situation and providing advice to relevant authorities."

Experts are unsure what caused the pilots to beach.

<h1>Officials on toes</h1>

The state’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is now “leading a response and managing the incident”.

State’s Park and Wildlife Service told 7News that its staff is at the beach and will maintain a presence overnight to monitor the welfare of the whales.

“A team of experienced staff are currently being deployed, including Perth Zoo veterinarians and marine fauna experts, along with specialised equipment, including vessels and slings,” the service said.

“Our team will camp on the beach overnight and are setting up a safety zone around the stranding area. At this time, volunteers and the public are requested to not attend the beach overnight for their safety.”

Local media reports point out that Western Australia has a history of whale stranding events.

In 2005, 19 whales beached at Geographe Bay. In 2018, more than 130 whales died in a mass stranding at Hamelin Bay, south of Perth.

The largest mass stranding of whales in WA happened in 1996 when 320 long-finned pilot whales stranded themselves in Dunsborough.

It was the first fatal shark attack in the Swan River since a 13-year-old boy was killed in January 1923 in the Perth suburb of Claremont, according to reports at the time and a database run by Taronga Conservation Society.

McGowan's tough border stance had proven popular with voters in his home state but a growing number of other state and federal leaders, unions and business groups had expressed concern about the economic impact of isolating Western Australia without a clear end date.

Under Western Australia's current border controls, people have to apply for permission to enter the state from elsewhere in the country, usually based on urgent family or business matters. If granted permission to enter, they are required to do seven days of quarantine and a series of rapid antigen tests - effectively keeping out most travellers.

Hermit kingdom no longer: Western Australia to open borders after two years

An elongated millipede with more legs than any other known species has been discovered by Australian scientists.&nbsp;

The first "genuine" millipede, has 1,306 legs and a 95mm long elongated body.

The creature is known as discovered about 60 metres (200 feet) below in a mining zone in Western Australia.&nbsp;

The new species has been given the name Eumillipes persephone, after Persephone, the Greek goddess of the underworld.

Illacme plenipes, which is found in central California and has up to 750 legs, held the previous record.&nbsp;

"Previously, no known millipede actually had 1,000 legs despite the name millipede meaning 'thousand feet,'" said Virginia Tech entomologist Paul Marek, lead author of the research published in the journal Scientific Reports.

"In my opinion this is a stunning animal, a marvel of evolution," said study co-author Bruno Buzatto, a principal biologist at Bennelongia Environmental Consultants in Perth, Australia.

"It represents the most extreme elongation found to date in millipedes, which were the first animals to conquer land. Until now, the leggiest animal known was Illacme plenipes, a California millipede species with 750 legs.

According to the researchers, Eumillipes may have benefited from having so many legs.&nbsp;

In an underground habitat rich in iron and volcanic rocks, the species lives in utter darkness.

Because it lacks eyes, it must rely on other senses such as touch and smell to detect its surroundings.

The researchers believe it eats fungi since it belongs to a family of fungal-eating millipedes.

It was discovered in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, where miners look for gold and other minerals, including lithium and vanadium.

The study documented four Eumillipes individuals, and another four have been discovered.

None of them have been found alive.

The study's adult females had 1,306 legs on one side and 998 on the other.

The two mature guys had 818 and 778 legs, respectively.

Because millipedes moult—shedding their tough outer coat—grow and add four-legged segments throughout their lives, the number of legs varies by species.

According to Meyers, their successful find will lead to more discoveries.

“There’s probably quite a few more out there,” he said. “We’ve probably been hit by more asteroids than we thought. If we start recognising more of these, then the landscape begins changing, and we have to ask ourselves what’s the frequency and why are they happening?”

Meyers said more discoveries could help scientists better predict when a meteorite may next strike Earth.

“If we can understand more of the geological history, we can predict when the next event will happen, or see when another rogue asteroid could hit us.”

Its latest assertion was its most insistent yet and was based on a review of satellite images provided by the French military intelligence service and France&#39;s national space agency, CNES, which showed 70 pieces of debris with a dozen of those &quot;probably&quot; man-made.

&quot;We think it is possible to identify a most-likely location of the aircraft, with unprecedented precision and certainty,&quot; the CSIRO said.

CSIRO oceanographer and the report&#39;s lead author, David Griffin, SAID that if the debris spotted in the pictures was authentic, then it supported previous ocean-drift analysis pointing to a crash zone just to the north of the area that was most thoroughly searched.

&quot;It all fits together so perfectly, the only thing missing is proof that those actually are pieces of plane,&quot; Griffin said.

Australia has not ruled out resuming the search for the airliner but has said that would depend on finding credible evidence about the plane&#39;s whereabouts.

Australian transport minister Darren Chester said the new analysis &quot;does not provide new evidence leading to a specific location of MH370&quot;.

Malaysia&#39;s deputy transport minister Aziz Kaprawi declined to comment on the agency&#39;s report, saying that he was awaiting further information from Australian authorities.

But he said Malaysia has not given up on the search and it had called for a meeting with Australian and Chinese authorities to discuss an offer from a private seabed exploration firm, Ocean Infinity, to resume the search.

&quot;No decision has been made but we are definitely considering a new search. We will seek input from our counterparts,&quot; he said.

Malaysia said this month Ocean Infinity had offered to search for free and would seek payment only if the aircraft was found. A company spokesman declined to comment.

The company says on its website it has the world&#39;s most advanced fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles for seabed mapping, survey, and search.
