Health officials in Europe have issued travel warnings to tourists after cases of Oropoche have been reported in people returning from Brazil and Cuba.

There were at least 19 cases of Oropouche virus disease reported for the first time in Europe. Among these, 12 were in Spain, five in Italy and two in Germany. All these were imported cases, with 18 infected people having travelled to Cuba and one to Brazil.

Oropouche virus (OROV) disease is the most prevalent insect-borne viral disease in South America after Dengue virus.

OROV disease has been reported in South America, Central America and the Caribbean this year, mainly in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Cuba.

Oropouche virus or OROV is a rare zootonic disease that infects humans through bites from infected midges, gnats and mosquitos. The main vector is a midge called Culicoides paraensis, prevalent in the Americas, but absent in Europe.

Fatalities are extremely rare for Oropouche virus disease, which is why the deaths in Brazil are concerning.

There have been no recorded cases of human-to-human transmission of OROV disease.

China is battling an extreme heatwave which has not only affected people but also damaged their cars. A video of ballooning cars in China was shared on the social media platform X, and it went viral as netizens wondered why cars are appearing "pregnant". Because of the increasing temperatures, the protective films on the car blew up and swelled, which made them appear pregnant. 'Made-in-China cars get pregnant' post goes viral, garners attention “No joke! Made-in-China cars get pregnant when it’s too hot,” wrote Jennifer Zeng, a US-based reporter in China. She often posts anti-CCP material on X and YouTube. The post went viral on X and garnered more than 357.2K views. In the video, various cars are parked in the open and have blown-up protective films. In the video, multiple car models are present which include an Audi model as well. No joke! Also Read: China auto sales lower in July, exports surge by 20 per cent “The joke is on you that you don’t even realise these are aftermarket wraps,” wrote Wan Chun Hung, reacting to the post. "Yeah, I wouldn't want to pop it at; you just don't know if it has chemical gases inside it or not," a user Nick said. "Bad paint protection film wrapping.
The Paris Olympics 2024 edition continues to make news. An image from the mega event is making heads turn on social media platforms. Most of the sports lovers have already seen the image. A news agency photographer named Jerome Brouillet, working with AFP, clicked Brazilian Olympic surfer Gabriel Medina paddle into one of the day’s biggest waves at one of the world’s heaviest surf breaks during the men's surfing Round 3 on Monday (July 29). Little did Brouillet know that his picture, where Medina is kicking out of the wave after a ride that led to a record Olympics score, in Tahiti, would be regarded as a global sensation.

Notably, Brouillet was on a boat in the channel — an area of deeper, calmer water to the side of the wave without a clear line of sight of the initial action. He, however, was in prime spot waiting for the Brazilian to "kick out" -- exit the wave face at the conclusion of his run when Brouillet clicked him. The moment of capture is so brilliant that it shows the surfer leaping from his surfboard and raising his finger in celebration of his Olympic triumph, with his surfboard pointing skyward parallelly.

As a result, even Medina shared the click courtesy an Instagram post.

Captioned “Don’t think that is the brightest idea,” the video was reposted by the Instagram account Influencers in the Wild. The original footage was posted about eight months ago by a user named AJ Ellis. The video shows a woman posing for the camera before calling a child to join her for a photo. She then takes the camera to take a picture of a man with the child, all while being dangerously close to the alligator. Shocking video shows parents making kids pose with alligator in US

For decades, the joke about psychiatrists interpreting every dream object as a phallus has persisted. This supposedly reflects Sigmund Freud’s views. However, a new edition of Freud's seminal work, 'The Interpretation of Dreams,' revised by a modern scholar, is challenging these misconceptions.

The man behind this revised understanding of Freud's work is Mark Solms, a South African psychoanalyst and neuropsychologist.

His revised edition, a comprehensive 24-volume collection, was commissioned by the British Psychoanalytic Society and marks the 50th anniversary of the last segment of Freud's works. It will be unveiled at the Freud Museum in London on 19 September, ahead of a special conference at University College London.

Freud's understanding of sexuality

Mark Solms, as per The Guardian, clarified that Freud's understanding of sexuality was far broader than commonly perceived.

"Freud had a very broad understanding of sexuality," Solms explains.

"For him, any activity that was pleasure-seeking in its own right—anything that one does for the purposes of pleasure alone, as opposed to practical purposes—was 'sexual'."

Thus, simple pleasures like a baby sucking a dummy, a child kicking a football, or swinging on a swing, were described by Freud as "sexual," purely because they provided enjoyment. This broad definition led to significant misunderstandings of Freud's theories, and "Late in his life, Freud acknowledged as much," he added.

The new edition by Solms rectifies several translation errors from James Strachey’s standard English translation of the 1950s and 60s.

Solms, fluent in German and raised in Namibia where an older form of the language is still spoken, has corrected these mistakes and contextualised the word "sexual."

"I've been correcting some errors: Strachey was elderly, and his sight was poor," said Solms. He has also updated some outdated technical terms and included essays, lectures, and other writings not present in Strachey's version.

The birth of surrealism

Freud's theories on sexual urges, the meaning of dreams, and the quest for emotional freedom, which inspired the surrealist art movement a century ago, were also misinterpreted. Surrealists like Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Giorgio de Chirico were influenced by Freud's work, although they misunderstood him as a radical.

In reality, "None of them understood that Freud was a rather conservative gentleman and shared none of their revolutionary social inclinations," said Solms.

The Chinese social media is praising a newly married man whose story of spending six hours daily commuting from his office to his house and vice-versa has gone viral.

The man has been making a 320-kilometre round-trip to ensure that he is back home for his wife, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

Lin Shu, 31, shared his videos on Douyin, a Chinese version of TikTok, and spoke about his daily journey which he called “the longest commute distance”.

The man wakes up at 5:00 am (local time) and starts his journey from Weifang, Shandong province in eastern China at 5:20 am (local time).

It takes him 30 minutes to reach the station with the help of an e-bike and then he boards a train at 6:15 am (local time).

He gets some time to have breakfast in the canteen of his company before he starts his work at 9:00 am (local time).

After finishing his work, he again travels for three or four hours to reach his home.

Lin's wife is from Weifang in Shandong province and hence they decided to purchase a flat there so that she can have a “sense of security”.

However, the man said that he will not be commuting like this for his entire life as his wife is searching for a job in Qingdao and they may settle there if everything goes as planned.

He further said that he did not find commuting difficult because of “the convenience of intercity transport”.

Netizens appreciate Chinese man for his 'love' for his wife The social media users appreciated the man for commuting for so many hours to live with his wife and said that the hard work was worth it “because of love”. One of the netizens calculated that commuting must cost the man around 1,600 yuan (US$220) every month.
When United Kingdom's Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak gave his resignation speech on a sombre day outside 10 Downing Street after disastrously losing the snap elections, his wife Akshata Murty stood behind holding an umbrella and wearing a dress that many found 'awful'.

Murty was wearing an Indian label dress which cost more than Rs 42,000 ($503.13). Interestingly, the dress contained all the colours of Britain’s national flag - which are blue, red and white stripes. Soon, the dress became viral as netizens found it very amusing.

The internet users said that the dress had arrows pointing down and the bottom section was red which appeared like a metaphor to indicate how the Conservative Party has slumped in the 2024 general election after losing to the Labour Party.

Here's the risk involved in water fasting

Water fasting helps in weight loss while restricting calorie intake and forces the body to burn stored fat for energy.

It gives the digestive system a break, improves insulin sensitivity, increases autophagy and improves mental clarity. However, water fasting also has some detrimental effects on the body.

Water fasting involves long periods without food which leads to deficiencies in nutrients like electrolytes, vitamins and minerals. This can lead to weakness, dizziness and other severe health issues.

Water is important for hydration, however, consuming excessive water without electrolyte balance leads to electrolyte imbalances and dehydration.

Prolonged water fasting also slows down metabolism when the body adjusts to conserving energy and leads to a rebound in weight gain after fasting comes to an end.

Medically supervised fasting programmes or intermittent fasting are safer options in comparison to water fasting. Such regimes can prove beneficial for the body.

Woman prison officer in UK charged with misconduct in public office after sex video with inmate surfaces

Defending champions England rode on Phil Salt's 87*, Jonny Bairstow's 48* and a disciplined death-over bowling to beat unbeaten co-hosts West Indies by eight wickets in the second game of the Super 8s in the ongoing T20 World Cup on Wednesday (June 19, local time). After restricting the Rovman Powell-led Windies for 180/4, thanks to Adil Rashid's 1 for 21 and Jofra Archer's 3 for 34, Jos Buttler & Co. made merry courtesy of Salt's brilliant knock and Bairstow's counterattack. However, it was the 16th over of England's run-chase which made heads turn as Romario Shepherd conceded 30 due to Salt's masterful strokeplay.

Talking about the 16th over, England needed 40 off the last 30 deliveries when Shepherd came to bowl. The pacer, in his second over, was clueless against Salt's onslaught as the right-hander smashed the ball to all parts of the ground. He punished the full as well as the short-length deliveries, timed one above the keeper's head for a four and smashed some maximums to send the English fans into a frenzy. As a result, 30 came off the six deliveries -- including three sixes -- as England killed the contest.

Here is the video of Salt's onslaught:

Talking about the WI innings, several batters such as Nicholas Pooran, captain Powell and Sherfane Rutherford came up with vital contributions but none made a solid impact. Thus, the two-time winners managed a par score in St Lucia, posting 180/4. In reply, England openers Buttler and Salt added 67 for the first wicket and while they were reduced to 84 for 2, Bairstow-Salt's unbroken 97-run third-wicket stand helped them win in 17.3 overs.

With this win, England started the Super 8s of the mega event, being held in the West Indies and the USA, in style. At the post-match presentation, Player-of-the-Match Salt said, "I like batting here, but I'm more happy to have contributed to a good team win. It was tough against spin in the middle overs, but I knew pace would come at some stage, the wind was blowing at one end, there was one short boundary and I backed myself to take on him (on his 30-run over against Shepherd). There was a period where I didn't face too many balls, the boundaries had dried up, but Jonny (Bairstow) took the pressure off me with his calculated hitting, his knock was very crucial."

Here is the video of Salt's onslaught: View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × Most expensive overs in Men’s T20 WC 36 - Stuart Broad (England) vs IND, Durban, 2007 36 - Azmatullah Omarzai (Afghanistan) vs WI, Gros Islet, 2024 33 - Jeremy Gordon (Canada) vs USA, Dallas, 2024 32 - Izatullah Dawlatzai (Afghanistan) vs ENG, Colombo (RPS), 2012 30 - Bilawal Bhatti (Pakistan) vs AUS, Mirpur, 2014 30 - Romario Shepherd (West Indies) vs ENG, Gros Islet, 2024 -- Most by a West Indian Also read: T20 World Cup: 'Please let Virat Kohli....' - AB de Villiers requests India before Super 8 tie vs Afghanistan Talking about the WI innings, several batters such as Nicholas Pooran, captain Powell and Sherfane Rutherford came up with vital contributions but none made a solid impact.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned against allowing any role for artificial intelligence in the decision to launch nuclear weapons.

He told a session of the Arms Control Association (ACA) that "humanity is on a knife's edge", with the risk of nuclear conflict at "heights not seen since the Cold War".

UN chief's warning

"States are engaged in a qualitative arms race," Guterres said.

"Technologies like artificial intelligence are multiplying the danger. Nuclear blackmail has re-emerged with some recklessly threatening nuclear catastrophe. Meanwhile, the regime designed to prevent the use, testing, and proliferation of nuclear weapons is weakening. Dear friends, we need disarmament now."

Team India is gearing up for their T20 World Cup opener versus Ireland, on Wednesday (June 5) in New York. The one-time winners are preparing hard for a fine start and had an intense training session ahead of their clash versus the Irish clash. Virat Kohli, who missed India's sole warm-up match versus Bangladesh, headlined the Men in Blue's practice session where he batted for close to 40 minutes as the national side trained for close to three hours, at the Nassau County Cricket Ground on Monday evening. Kohli was up against the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal during his 40-minute batting session. The right-hander took time to get going, as he assessed the conditions, before playing his shots. Kohli judged the bounce on the training pitches, being fully well that the Nassau County Cricket Stadium has aided the fast bowlers so far in the 20-team tournament.
