Shot across Mumbai, London, and New York, Vir Das: Fool Volume is a deeply personal and unconventional comedy special born out of an unexpected challenge: Das losing his voice shortly before he was due to shoot the show. The experience led him to rewrite the special in silence and perform it largely without rehearsal, turning what began as a setback into the foundation for the special’s central themes of silence, happiness, foolishness and finding one’s voice.

‘I literally lost my voice’

Speaking about the nomination, Vir Das said, “There’s something wonderfully strange about being nominated for an International Emmy for a show called Fool Volume. This special came from a period when I literally lost my voice, so to see something that began in silence travel this far is pretty surreal. For India was the first time I understood that our comedy could find a home on a global stage, Landing gave me an Emmy, and now Fool Volume has brought me back into that conversation. I’m incredibly grateful to Netflix, my team, and everyone who helped make this very strange, very personal show. Three nominations is something I never imagined when we made the first one, so I’m just going to enjoy the fact that the fool keeps getting louder.”

Also Read: Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos review: More chaos than comedy?

The third International Emmy nomination further cements Das’ position as one of India’s most internationally recognised stand-up comedians, with his work continuing to find audiences across borders and cultures.

On the work front, Vir Das was last seen in the spy comedy film Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos alongside Mona Singh, Mithila Palkar, Imran Khan and many others and was co-produced by Aamir Khan Productions.

Playing the Royal Albert Hall is incredibly special, it’s a venue that carries so much history and has hosted some of the greatest performers of all time. To bring an Indian stand-up show to that stage is both surreal and deeply humbling. I can’t wait to share this moment with the audience."

Known as one of the most legendary performance venues in the world, the Royal Albert Hall has hosted some of the most celebrated artists and historic performances in entertainment history, from bands like Led Zeppelin and The Beatles to modern icons such as Adele and Eric Clapton.

Vir Das to take his Hey Stranger world tour to London's Royal Albert Hall

It’s all there, but not quite. Vir Das, known primarily for his stand-up comedy, co-directs (with Kavi Shastri) and co-writes (with Amogh Ranadive) Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, which starts on a promising note, but the chaos and the humour that come along with it runs its course midway through the film. I was seated when the film began, which showed Aamir Khan as a dreaded gangster in Goa’s fictitious Panjore out on a killing spree and engaging in a gun fight with two British agents.

Khan’s character bumps off quite early, along with Sumukhi Suresh (who plays a dutiful maid busy cleaning the room amid firing). Wasted potential, really, as both actors would have accelerated the story’s absurdities better than the protagonist Happy Patel does.

What’s the plot of Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos?

Happy Patel (Das) is raised as a Brit by two ex-MI7 spies. The two ‘Dads’, as he keeps calling them, want him to become a spy for the British government and train him as well, but Happy keeps failing the MI7 entrance test. His interest lies in food and he knows what ingredients to use to make bland dishes taste delectable. When an Birtish scientist, the brain behind a revolutionary fairness cream, goes missing in India, Happy is recruited by MI7 and sent off to Goa, to feed all stereotypes around the West’s obsession with the beach state and also find the missing lady. Happy is also told that his origins lie in Goa, and in a three-week crash course, he is taught to be Indian. His crash course includes eating with your hands instead of a spoon, spreading arms like SRK to seduce women, and speaking Hindi the wrong way.

In Panjore, he meets Geet (Sharib Hashmi), his local handler who sips tea to speak in code language, Roxy (Srushti Tawde), the handler’s handler and a techie genius and Rupa(Mithila Palkar), an aspiring dancer. His search for the missing lady takes him to Mama (Mona Singh), the local don, who also runs a catering business and is obsessed with cutlets. But how to connect the dots between Mama, the missing expat and Happy’s own back story? Chaos, confusion and dollops of comedy ensue.

What works and what does not

Lots of meta references, including one brief reunion of sorts of the Delhi Belly cast compising of Das, Imran Khan (god, how much he has been missed), and Kunal Roy Kapoor and double-meaning dialogues with Hindi gaffes make you laugh out loud. Das is almost everywhere, he sings, dances, woos the girl and even dances off in the middle of a gory fight with the villain. The film takes digs at NRI stereotypes, their obsession with Goa, Hindi films, blind love for SRK kind of romance, politics and more. While the first half is enjoyable, in the second, the chaos overpowers logic, and the humour fizzles out.

I was keen to watch more of Sumukhi, Aamir and Mona on screen- all of whom are not used to their potential. Neither is Mithila Palkar, a gifted performer, who is reduced to being just a petty face in the film.

The film has a lot of Vir Das. While the comedian’s act on stage has been well-received across the world, he is not the right choice to play a leading man in a comedy film. His British-accented Hindi sounds annoying after a point, even though he keeps it consistent, unlike the comedy. Das grimaces and shrugs through the two-hour-long comedy and shines mostly in the first half. His aide, Sharib Hashmi, has a more natural flair with his comic timing on screen, but gets limited scope to shine.

There are jokes and gags in plenty. A Sikh Man dreamily says ‘Daddy’ whenever Happy spreads his arm wide, SRK style, the subtitles are misspelt purposely to reiterate Happy’s wonky Hindi, there is a cook-off right in the middle of a climax featuring Sanjeev Kapoor, a gun wielding gangster’s answer to the question ‘what’s happening?’ is “murdering”, Happy shields himself from a butcher knife attack by performing some signature steps from iconic Bollywood songs.

Final verdict

Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos is a comedy for a select few. On paper and while writing, the jokes may have felt funny but not all land that effectively. It’s mad and chaotic, as it should be for a comedy, but perhaps Das’s performative humour doesn’t land as effectively as his comic sets on stage.

Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos is now running in theatres.

Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos is co-directed by Vir Das and features him as the lead protagonist. The Spy parody is backed by Aamir Khan, who also features in a cameo role along with Imran Khan.

Air India aircraft to London with 242 people onboard which crashed in Gujarat's Ahmedabad is one of the deadliest aviation accidents in recent times. The incident took place in the Meghani area, five minutes after take-off. Several celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma, and Ranveer Singh extended their prayers and condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy. Actor and comedian Vir Das, however, is facing backlash for his comments in regard to the issue and even deleted the tweet he had replied to the user, which has now gone viral.

Why Vir Das is facing the ire of netizens for his comments on the recent Air India crash?

Recently, Vir Das took his official X handle and wrote, "I flew Air India home from London. It was all great. The crew, happy to report, still the kindest in the sky". To this, many taunted him by asking if he was getting free tickets for complimentary meals every time. But, one user wrote, "The only thing I have to say to whoever came up with this lame PR unit at @airindia. This is just sad, you're embarrassing yourselves at this point". To this, Vir Das, replied, which has now been deleted, "I should clarify. I support the airline because I have a very biased history with them. My grandfather worked at Air India. It is an airline with problems I know".

Also read: Ahmedabad plane crash: Music director goes missing, wife's desperate search continues

He further wrote, "I have flown every circuit and every seat class through my career. But as someone who is three world tours in and has flown every airline in every country make no mistake...no crew will judge you less, welcome you more and it's a shame that no one acknowledges their loss too in a tragedy. That warrants my support".

Also read: Tanvi The Great New York premiere: Robert De Niro's surprise appearance makes Anupam Kher 'shocked', says ‘Highlight of my career’

He wrote, “The plane burst into flames after piercing through a medical college mess, where young doctors were having their meals. It is not an airline without problems but without fail, I know them to be the best crew in the sky. Time will tell what happened on this tragic flight. Vir Das' dig Cannes 2025 red carpet rule Vir Das took to Instagram to share a post and wrote, "It's with deep regret that I announce I will no longer will be attending the Cannes film festival because of the new red-carpet rules. For multiple generations nude voluminous gowns with large trains have been culturally specific to the comedy community." But, I can't wear a Gota original, I refuse to let our culture be shunted. I was planning on taking multiple selfies of cultural significance. But someone has to take a stand. Vir Das turns author! Comedian to share hi journey in a new memoir - The Outsider

Comedian-actor Vir Das created history on Monday night as he became the first Indian to host the International Emmy Awards. The comedian-actor presented the 2024 edition of the popular TV and streaming awards in a starry event held in New York. Das charmed the audience with his wit and made jokes about anyone and everyone.

The award ceremony was not streamed or telecast in India and many other countries – which became a subject of joke for the comedian. Vir couldn't help but point out the irony of the situation that an awards night honouring the best of OTT was not available for viewing on any of the OTT spaces. In a clip shared by the comedian himself on Instagram Stories, he says, "All the major platforms are here and humbly, I feel that next year, one of you should really broadcast this show. What do you think?"

As Vir's statement was met with cheers and applause from the crowd, he asked, "Who does Will Smith have to slap tonight for us to get some eyeballs, guys?" The joke was a reference to the infamous incident from the 2022 Oscars when actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage after he made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett.

Continuing his monologue, Vir added, "I'm kidding. We are foreigners. You can't slap foreigners with anything but sanctions...sorry tariffs."

What do you think?" As Vir's statement was met with cheers and applause from the crowd, he asked, "Who does Will Smith have to slap tonight for us to get some eyeballs, guys?" The joke was a reference to the infamous incident from the 2022 Oscars when actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage after he made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett. Continuing his monologue, Vir added, "I'm kidding. We are foreigners. You can't slap foreigners with anything but sanctions...sorry tariffs." Vir Das' Instagram post for a designer

Vir's look was put together by an Indian designer called Shubhangi Bajpai. In September Vir put out an Instagram post calling for designers who would be eager to dress him for International Emmy Awards 2024.

What started with ‘Attention new designers’ became a young, talented Shubangi Bajpai’s dream come true moment. Vir was very clear in the post he shared that he wasn’t going to pick an outfit from a fancy fashion designer, instead wanted to celebrate budding talent at the prestigious awards ceremony. “I’m going to wear something Indian from home. I’m also not going to wear a fancy designer. They have enough cash and clients," expressed Vir, on his Instagram post.

On Monday, hours before he took up hosting duties, Vir took to Instagram to introduce Shubhangi and her label Salooka to the world.

“As promised. I will be wearing a brand new designer for the Emmys. As promised, I know nothing about fashion. But she does and she worked super hard. Her name is Shubhangi Bajpai and she is from Delhi. Happy to show you her work soon. Do keep in mind, she doesn’t have much to work with here," expressed Vir Das, on his Instagram post.

International Emmy Awards 2024: Vir Das, Aditya Roy Kapur bring Indian flavour to the red carpet

In a few hours from now, popular Indian comedian-actor Vir Das will take up hosting duties at the International Emmy Awards 2024. Das is the first Indian to host the award show that honours the best of TV and Web content from across the world. Ahead of the award ceremony, Das candidly admitted that he is 'nervous' to be hosting the show.
The actor is not new to the International Emmy stage. He had won an International Emmy in 2023 for his Netflix special Landing.

While speaking to AP, Das admitted he was nervous about capturing the feeling in the room. “I'm very nervous. I'm not going to lie. I, you know, it's a weird month to be a foreigner in America hosting a massive award show, you know, in a room full of foreigners in a hotel in New York City. I don't think it gets quite as timely as that, you know. And so I think I'm nervous about capturing the feeling in the room and capturing the feeling of the country and making it a celebration of underdogs, which is who I think the people who come to the International Emmys are underdogs," said the comedian while referring to the recently concluded US presidential election results.

Das, one of the most popular stand-up comics in India, also remarked that comedy had changed in the last five years.

"I think comedy turned a corner five, six years ago. I started coming to America to kind of just learn how to be good at stand-up in 2015-16, right after this sort of a nine-year stint in movies in India. And you still at that point had to kind of bend to the local version of you that Americans understood, you know? So it was a lot of like, 'Here's the five things they know about India and do jokes about those five things,' right? So doctors, blah blah blah, etc. etc.. And then Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, etc. etc. and now it's kind of more important to do you. And no matter where you are in the world, can I take you home with me? Not literally, but, can I - like a (Dave) Chappelle takes you to Ohio, and I've never been, you're coming to Mumbai with me."

Back in September, Das had sought for a designer on Instagram who could dress him up for the awards night. Stating that he did not want to wear a fancy designer for the occasion, Das had requested interested people to reach out to his team so that he could 'wear something Indian from home.'

Not literally, but, can I - like a (Dave) Chappelle takes you to Ohio, and I've never been, you're coming to Mumbai with me." Back in September, Das had sought for a designer on Instagram who could dress him up for the awards night. Stating that he did not want to wear a fancy designer for the occasion, Das had requested interested people to reach out to his team so that he could 'wear something Indian from home.'

‘I love conspiracy nuts...’: Vir Das has the most fitting comeback to ‘mediocre’ remark

Actor-comic Vir Das, who is set to host the upcoming International Emmy Awards, on Sunday invited aspiring designers, labels and students to design him an outfit for the awards ceremony.

The comedian will take over the hosting duties of the event in New York in November, a year after he won the trophy for his comedy special "Landing".

In an Instagram post, Das asked budding talent to put together "super formal stuff", for which they will be duly credited and paid.

"I'm going to be the first Indian to host the International Emmy Awards. I'm going to wear something Indian from home. I'm also not going to wear a fancy designer. They have enough cash and clients. So we're gonna launch someone new," he wrote, urging designers to submit their work via email.

Indian comedian Vir Das to host 2024 International Emmys

In Bella Chowdhary’s world, there’s no such thing as too many bags and in a world of fakes, she is on a path to become a Birkin. But it’s a path that she hasn’t chosen for herself, rather, a tragedy has led her there.

Bella AKA Bae (Ananya Panday) was born with a golden spoon in a Delhi-based wealthy family. Upon the brink of losing their wealth, the family hacks Bae’s love story with a business tycoon Agastya Chowdhary (Vihaan Samat). But everything that glitters is not gold. She may have all the luxuries one can ever wish for, but none of them fulfilling enough to help her cope with her loneliness. Her world comes crashing down when a rather private moment becomes a public affair.

Both her families disown her and the scandal leaves her stranded - until she begins to find her own hat. Bella must now navigate a life without the prestigious privileges that she is known to live with or in other words, learn to live like a middle-class girl in Mumbai.

Call Me Bae lands the aesthetics

Created by Ishita Moitra and co-written by Samina Motlekar and Rohit Nair, Call Me Bae has been helmed by Collin D Cunha. First things first, it’s a visually stunning series, where apt attention has been paid to sets and Bae’s costumes. The aesthetic aspects are all in place with the addition of viral-worthy songs. But the story never fully feels convincing. It’s partly because it all seems extremely easy for Bae -or if she would’ve put it, the struggles aren’t struggling at all.

Transitioning to Mumbai, bumping into new people, finding a home, landing a job, and even getting her first big breaking story as a journalist - it all seems too easy and if not a golden spoon, there’s still a platter for Bae.

The show spoofs the extravagant world of celebrity weddings with a scene inspired by Kiara Advani and Sidharth Malhotra’s wedding, scatters references of social media fame (cue a random scene featuring Orry) and downfall, spills prominent names like it’s no big deal. At one point, Bae is angry with her husband for picking a meeting with Elon Musk over spending time with her.

The wealthy parodical world that’s built in the beginning is silly but comical, and you understand why. It’s sharp writing with solid meta references thrown all around, including Panday and Siddhant Chaturvedi’s infamous ‘struggle’ exchange and several nods to Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Poo. But it’s the world that comes after that doesn’t fully feel authentic. Perhaps a little less froth and more depth would have helped.

What works is Ananya Panday as Bae

What does work for Call Me Bae is Ananya Panday. Panday holds the show together with her charming performance. Even as you can spot glimpses of Alexis Rose from Schitt’s Creek, Emily from Emily In Paris and Two Broke Girls in both her performance and the storyline, Panday’s persona and dialogue delivery manage to work. It also works in her favour that her heiress-to-hustler character is the only one that’s fully fleshed out, wherein her costumes, too, play a pivotal role in storytelling.

The series introduces viewers to ‘Behen-code’ - a promise that’s older than The Da Vinci Code and stronger than brocode with the help of Bae’s new-found friends, Saira Ali (Muskkaan Jaferi) and Tammarrah Pawwarh (Niharika Lyra Dutt) and both do justice to their parts. Vir Das, who plays the role of TRP-greedy TV anchor Satyajit Sen, is certainly having fun. Lisa Mishra essays the role of his show’s producer and girlfriend Harleen. While the two deliver decent performances, one wishes their roles were layered. The minute glimpses of Sen and Harleen’s personal life had ample scope of further character development.

Call Me Bae also stars Varun Sood as Prince, Vihaan Samat as Agastya, Gurfateh Pirzada as Neel N, and Mini Mathur as Bae’s mother Gayatri but sadly, none of them get enough space to play around.

Also read: Top filmmakers Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra in talks to launch SRK's son Aryan Khan?

The intent and ambition are right, but the execution not so much. Call Me Bae is a self-aware show but it doesn’t scratch beneath the surface. Even when it sets out to explore darker themes, both of which are timely and if well executed, could've had a better impact. Overall, style trumps substance in the story. What essentially works for rich-person-turns-poor tropes is the character evolution, remember Annie Murphy’s Alexis Rose’s arc from Schitt’s Creek? And while Bae does evolve through the six-episode series, it’s not satisfying enough.

Watch Call Me Bae trailer here: Call Me Bae also stars Varun Sood as Prince, Vihaan Samat as Agastya, Gurfateh Pirzada as Neel N, and Mini Mathur as Bae’s mother Gayatri but sadly, none of them get enough space to play around.

International Emmy award-winning comedian Vir Das has commented on Indian celebrities promoting tourism in Lakshadweep Islands. Das' comments come amid tensions between India and the Maldives following a tweet by a Maldives minister slamming the picturesque islands of Lakshadweep as also disparagingly targeting PM Narendra Modi.

Several Bollywood celebrities including Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Sara Ali Khan have since then expressed their support for the archipelago and encouraged Indians to explore its beauty.
