"Together, we've built a strong rapport, guiding India to key successes, and I'm thrilled to reunite with him. It, however, will be Rathour’s second stint with any franchise in the IPL, having worked with Punjab Kings earlier.&nbsp;

Previously, he worked as the director of cricket at Himachal Pradesh.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) appointed Rathour and former Sri Lanka spin legend Rangana Herath as their batting and bowling coaches, respectively, for the Sri Lanka series.&nbsp;

Though Herath’s contract will run through till the end of the India Tests, NZC appointed Rathour for the ongoing SL series.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Rathour and Dravid will work on finalising the retention list as BCCI nears announcing revised IPL retention rules.&nbsp;

While NZC appointed Herath as the spin bowling coach for one Test against Afghanistan and two against Sri Lanka,&nbsp;Rathour will be part of their coaching staff for a one-off Afghanistan Test starting September 9 in Greater Noida.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said both men are regarded highly in world cricket for their contributions on and off the field.&nbsp;

Considering NZ has three left-arm orthodox spinners, Ajaz Patel, Rachin Ravindra and Mitchell Santner, in their squad, Herath’s inputs will benefit them all.&nbsp;

"Both men are held in high regard in the world of cricket, and I know our players are really looking forward to the opportunity to learn from them," New Zealand coach Gary Stead said.

With New Zealand set to play six Tests in Asia, including one against Afghanistan (which is not part of the WTC cycle), two versus Sri Lanka and three against India (in Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai, respectively), they will bank on their spin department to win matches in sub-continent.

Apart from the three left-arm spinners, NZ also has Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell in the side for the AFG and SL Tests.&nbsp;

New Zealand is yet to announce the Test squad for the India series.

Herath, a former Sri Lankan great, picked 433 Test wickets during his almost two-decade-long cricket career and was part of Bangladesh’s backroom staff until recently. He has replaced former Pakistan spin king Saqlain Mushtaq, who is now among the five-member unit the PCB named to uplift their domestic cricket.

Rathour, who also played six Tests for India, was part of Rahul Dravid-led backroom staff, working as the batting coach. Before his tenure ended in June earlier this year, he guided Team India to its second T20 World Cup title in the Americas.

"His first quality is that as a batsman, he is a phenomenal player. I think he is someone who understands his game really well. He always has a clear game plan. Even as a leader, you will have to lead from the front. You have to perform to set the example. And since he has become the captain, he has always led by example," Rathour continued.&nbsp;

Detailing further on what made him believe that Gill has both confidence and game awareness, Rathour recalled an instance ahead of the England Tests earlier this year, when Gill approached the leadership group to take up the number three role willingly. Although he was out of touch, having failed to score a fifty in the past 12 innings in the lead-up to that, Gill slammed a stunning hundred in the second innings of the Vizag Test.&nbsp;

“The talk came from him. He felt that No 3 was an ideal position for him to bat, and the management group backed him. It was his decision, which was backed by Rahul, myself and Rohit, and he turned it around in the England series,” Rathour continued.

The former batting coach also shared what he thought of Gill when he first saw him bat in the nets.

“When I first saw him in the nets, my first impression was like everybody else’s. I saw exactly what a lot of people were talking about and spoke about his special talent. When the first time I saw him playing, the immediate thought that went into my mind was ‘Whoa this kid is extremely talented’.

T20 World Cup 2024: 'Love it...,'  India batting coach on team winning without Virat Kohli's runs

India's batting coach Vikram Rathour opened up on the Ranchi pitch ahead of Rohit&nbsp;Sharma &amp; Co.'s fourth and penultimate Test versus England, which gets underway on Feb 23 (Friday). A lot has been said and written about the Ranchi pitch, which is said to have a lot of&nbsp;cracks. It is expected to&nbsp;assist the spinners the most so far in the ongoing five-match series.

With India resting ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, it is a strong indication that the Ranchi pitch will favour spinners. Thus, Rathour also joined the bandwagon and commented on the pitch in the pre-match presser on Thursday (Feb 22). The batting coach admitted that the surface will offer spin but isn't sure by when the spinners will come into play.&nbsp;

"Every time we play in India, there's a question mark on the pitch. It's a typical Indian wicket. There are cracks. It will turn. But how much and from when we aren't sure," Rathour said to the reporters.

India will be tempted to bring in another spinner in place of Bumrah. Axar Patel can feature in the playing XI, strengthening the spin department which comprises R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. However, if India opt for four spinners, Mohammed Siraj will have a huge responsibility acting as the sole pacer. “Could they have batted with more discipline? Maybe they could have. That’s what they need to decide and come up with their plans.”&nbsp;

“But, they need to score runs by playing their shots, as you need to back your strengths. Batting is always about scoring runs. It’s not about not getting out but how many runs you put on the board,” noted the batting coach further.

"We can't judge him on basis of one innings. He has a lot of time. He has the technique and temperament to play time if required and can also play an attacking game when a move on is needed. He can move the game forward. That is what we need at No. 3 as it can be advantageous," Rathour added.

Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal (171) and Rohit Sharma (103) had scored a century each as openers while Virat Kohli scored 76 at number four as India amassed 421 runs in their first innings.

Young Jaiswal was given Player of the Match award for scoring a ton in his debut game. Apart from him, veteran off-spinner Ravi Ashwin took 12 wickets in the match.

"He will be a finisher at number five or six, he knows that. Nobody is pushing him to get a hundred in ODIs. He will always be an impact player and if he is consistently getting 40-50 and winning it for the team, then that is fine," Rathour added.
