Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has a doomsday prediction for the likes of Google, Amazon and other tech giants. Speaking at an event in San Francisco, Gates said that a future Artificial Intelligence (AI) personal assistant would be so efficient and profound that other competitors will not be able to stand their ground.

Gates said the first company to develop such a programme will be the market leader and could potentially alter user behaviour for good.

“Whoever wins the personal agent, that’s the big thing, because you will never go to a search site again, you will never go to a productivity site, you’ll never go to Amazon again,” said Gates.

Gates posited that there is a 50-50 chance that the future AI winner will be either a startup or a tech giant.

Gates remains bullish about AI

Gates is one of the few industry giants that is extremely bullish about the future of AI. Last month, he said AI might be able to teach children how to 'read and write' in the coming year or two.

“If you just took the next 18 months, the AIs will come in as a teacher’s aide and give feedback on writing. And then they will amp up what we’re able to do in math. Our bottleneck in math really is more of how we fit in the overall system and getting that teacher adoption," wrote the billionaire on his website “Gates Notes”.

He said AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT Plus may charge for the service, but they will still be more accessible and affordable compared to traditional human tutoring.

LLMs and their future

Large Language Models like OpenAI's GPT-3 powering ChatGPT and Google's LaMDA powering Bard are exceptionally good at learning and executing tasks on the fly.

Within a few months of ChatGPT's debut, the AI field has made tremendous strides. With future LLMs expected to build upon previous knowledge, just the way humans do, according to a recent MIT study, Gates' theory might come to fruition, in reality, sooner than expected.

WATCH | Race for powerful AI tools heats up × Gates posited that there is a 50-50 chance that the future AI winner will be either a startup or a tech giant. “I’d be disappointed if Microsoft didn’t come in there. But I’m impressed with a couple of startups, including Inflection,” said Gates, referring to Inflection.AI, co-founded by former DeepMind executive Mustafa Suleyman. Know how to access Google chatbot, all you need to know Gates remains bullish about AI Gates is one of the few industry giants that is extremely bullish about the future of AI. Within a few months of ChatGPT's debut, the AI field has made tremendous strides. With future LLMs expected to build upon previous knowledge, just the way humans do, according to a recent MIT study, Gates' theory might come to fruition, in reality, sooner than expected. US debt ceiling: Biden to ring McCarthy from Air Force One to restart negotiations

President joe biden told g7 leaders that Washington will support providing advanced warplanes, including f-16s, to Ukraine; and will back efforts to train Kyiv's pilots. The U.S. Move signals a major breakthrough for Kyiv. Ukraine has repeatedly, and until recently, unsuccessfully pushed its Western supporters to agree to provide high-tech jets as it fights to fend off Russia's invasion. Momentum has been building for providing high-tech warplanes to Ukraine, but u.S. Support is key. Remember, Washington legally has to approve the re-export of u.S. Equipment purchased by allies. F-16 jets appear likely to join the list of other systems, such as tanks and long-range weaponry, that Ukraine's supporters have agreed to provide after initial reluctance. With depleted strength and dated aircraft, the Ukrainian air force is struggling. The Ukrainians fly Soviet-era jets like Sukhoi & MIGs. The country's current fleet of warplanes is older than modern Ukraine itself.

Congress earlier this year extended the statutory debt limit to $31.4 trillion. However, the weak economic fundamentals and overflowing expenditures mean that the US will be breaching the limit. Consequently, Congress has been engaged in a fierce tussle to raise the limit. According to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, even the extraordinary measures, if implemented will only buy the government a limited amount of time. "It is therefore critical that Congress act in a timely manner to increase or suspend the debt limit. Failure to meet the government's obligations would cause irreparable harm to the US economy, the livelihoods of all Americans, and global financial stability," warned Yellen earlier this year.
US Supreme Court on Thursday ruled in favour of Google, Meta and Twitter, stating that the social media giants cannot be held responsible for posts carrying content supportive of terrorist groups such as Islamic State (ISIS). Two cases were filed by a US victim of the 2015 Paris attacks while the third case was brought by the family of a victim of a 2017 attack by ISIS group on an Istanbul nightclub. The justices noted that the cases against social media companies did not amount to a liable infraction.

Court refused to recommend changes to Section 230

The victims of the terrorist attacks who filed cases against social media companies were seeking changes to a law called Section 230, which gives online platforms blanket immunity from liabilities arising from third-party content on their sites. The immunity prevails even if the platform recommends offensive content to its users.

Section 230 became law in 1996 and was meant to uphold the freedom of speech in the United States. However, experts are increasingly crediting the law for the increase in hateful content on social media platforms.

The judgment on Thursday came as a big relief to social media companies. They believe that without the protective immunity from Section 230, the websites will be open to lawsuits for content posted by users. An association representing US tech companies said the decision was good news.

The report released by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Monday provided a comprehensive view of religious freedom in nearly 200 countries across the world. However, akin to the previous iterations of the report, the 2022 version took a special inkling towards India and its treatment of minorities. India's ruling party Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) was mentioned 28 times in the report while Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal were mentioned 24 and seven times respectively. WATCH | India rejects US global religious freedom report × Rashad Hussain, ambassador at large, Office of International Religious Freedom stated that "far too many governments, including Russia, India, China and Saudi Arabia, continue to freely target faith community members within their borders". The report claimed that various state governments in India took evasive actions against minorities, especially Muslims. "In June, several parts of the country reported violent protests and acts of arson after spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal from the country's ruling BJP made televised remarks about the Prophet Muhammad which were widely seen as offensive by Muslims," highlighted the US report. It also pointed out the 2020 Delhi riots, alleging that there were “multiple instances of apparent police complicity” in violent actions against protestors, who were mostly Muslim. The report also targetted India's Union Home Minister Amit Shah, claiming that the BJP leader in a public meeting in Hyderabad, promised to end employment and educational quotas for religious minorities in Telangana if his party was voted to power. The Congressional-mandatory annual report becomes the subject of intense scrutiny every year when released. New Delhi, however, has never taken its findings too seriously. Dillon Reeves, a seventh grader who recently stopped a school bus from crashing in Michigan after the driver lost consciousness was able to perform the heroic task because he was the only passenger who was not distracted by an electronic device. According to Dillon’s father, Steve, the parents had decided to not provide him with a cell phone - a decision that paid off in a big way during the crisis. “What else are you going to do when you don’t have a phone? You’re going to look at people, you’re going to notice stuff. You’re going to look out the window. It’s a very powerful lesson, maybe a change-the-world kind of lesson," Steve was quoted as saying by CBS. Steve added that when the police called him regarding his son, he was anticipating the call to go in another direction. "'Are you the parent of Dillon Reeves?'" Steve Reeves recalled the police asking him. "And I said, 'Yes.' And I go 'What'd he do?' And he goes 'No, this is a good phone call. Your son is a hero. He stopped the bus.'" While Dillon was busy accessing the situation and saving the day, other students were seemingly engrossed in their smartphones, blissfully unaware of the tragedy waiting to unfold. “I had my AirPods in,” said one student, while another added: “I was looking on my phone.” “I was on my phone playing a little game," added the third student.
