US orders temporary, partial evacuation of some embassy staff from Niger

Over a fortnight after Russia killed the Black Sea grain deal which allowed safe passage to Ukrainian ships carrying grain shipments, the United States has said Kremlin might be prepared to return to talks, according to Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US envoy to United Nations.

At a press conference on Tuesday Thomas-Greenfield said if Russia's demands are met, it could return to the grain deal.

"We have seen indications that they might be interested in returning to discussions. So we will wait to see whether that actually happens," said the ambassador.

Aftermath of the deal cancellation

Ever since Russia pulled out of the deal, the fighting between both sides has intensified. Russia initially pounded the port cities of Ukraine such as Odesa and Mykolaiv with missile attacks, killing several innocent civilians in the process. Moreover, Kremlin said it was keeping a close tab on the Ukrainian vessels, and would consider them as potential military targets.

Last week, Russia's FSB security service turned away a cargo ship bound for the port of Rostov-on-Don after finding "traces of explosives" on it.

Meanwhile, Kyiv returned the favour by targeting Moscow with indiscriminate drone attacks, which might have spurred the 'returning-to-table' talks.

What is the Black Sea grain deal?

Ukraine is one of the world’s biggest exporters of food grains, such as wheat and corn, and has played a significant role in the UN’s food aid programmes. Therefore, when Russia invaded and blocked Ukrainian ports, prices of food grains soared across parts of the world.

Aftermath of the deal cancellation Ever since Russia pulled out of the deal, the fighting between both sides has intensified. Ukraine is one of the world’s biggest exporters of food grains, such as wheat and corn, and has played a significant role in the UN’s food aid programmes. Therefore, when Russia invaded and blocked Ukrainian ports, prices of food grains soared across parts of the world.
A $2 million lawsuit has been filed against Delta Airlines after a man sexually assaulted a mother and her teenage daughter during a nine-hour flight in the US, according to Fox Business.

The lawsuit, filed in the Eastern District of New York, claims that a man on the flight was served at least 10 vodka drinks and a glass of wine while he groped a 16-year-old girl and slid hands under the mother's clothes.

"The intoxicated Delta passenger appeared to be getting drunker and drunker as the Delta flight attendants continued serving him alcohol," the complaint states.

It added that Delta flight attendants "blatantly ignored" the pleas for help by the mother who wanted the intoxicated male to be escorted out to a different place.

The incident took place on the July 26 flight where the unidentified man claimed that he was from Connecticut. According to court documents, after getting drunk, the man started making obscene gestures and started harassing the minor by asking for her personal information including her address.

After being told by the mother that the girl was a minor, the man said he did not care and proceeded to reach over the 16-year-old to grab at the mother’s arm. At this point, the mother had pleaded to the flight attendants multiple times to do the needful but all she received was a "be patient" remark, the complaint read.

Also read | Funding cuts force UN to pull the plug on feeding 100,000 Haitians this month WFP said it has been forced to cut the number of people receiving the aid by 25 per cent in July, meaning at least 100,000 vulnerable Haitians will be without WFP support. The abduction comes days after the US issued a level-four "do not travel" advisory because of the unrest in the country. All non-emergency government personnel and their family members have also been ordered to leave Haiti. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup will be co-hosted by former two-time winners West Indies and newcomers USA from June 4 to 30, 2024, per the latest reports. Cricket's apex body - the ICC, is understood to have inspected several venues in the USA that will stage international cricket matches for the first time.

While Florida remains the only venue that hosted cricket matches in the past, Morrisville, Dallas and New York are looked upon as other potential grounds.

Given Lauderhill in Florida is slated to stage the final two T20Is between India and West Indies in a fortnight, Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Church Street Park in Morrisville and Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, New York, are yet to get international venue status by ICC - something that is important to international cricket matches. Meanwhile, Morrisville and Dallas are currently hosting the inaugural edition of Major League Cricket (MLC) in the country.

In consultation with Cricket West Indies and the USA, the ICC will take the final call on the venues in the coming months.

Teams, format and Moto

The 20-team tournament will see hosts West Indies and the USA - the top eight teams at the previous edition - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and the Netherlands getting qualified directly for the Men's T20 World Cup 2024. Alongside them, Bangladesh and Afghanistan - on the virtue of their T20I rankings also made the cut.

Besides these 12 teams, three more, including Ireland and Scotland (for securing the top two spots in Europe Region Qualifier) and Papua New Guinea (PNG), made the list after guaranteeing a first-place finish in East Asia-Pacific Qualifier.

With 15 out of the 20 slots filled, the remaining five will get determined from Qualifiers from the Americas (for one spot), Africa (two) and Asia (two) in the coming months.

Meanwhile, unlike the format in the previous two editions, this tournament will see a new one in place. All 20 teams will get divided into groups of four, with each group containing five teams.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 round, where four teams will again be placed into two groups, and the top two sides there will further move to the semis.

For those wondering why the USA got the hosting rights for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2024, the ICC has two major reasons behind it - with the first being the board finding North America has a potential future market, and second to push cricket's case to get included in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.

Nearly a fortnight after mummified bodies of three people were found in a remote Rocky Mountains camp in the US state of Colorado, authorities have revealed that they were family members who were attempting to live off the grid and escape civilisation.

The bodies have been identified as those of sisters Christine Vance, 41, and Rebecca Vance, 42, as well as Rebecca’s 14-year-old son. The family of the deceased said the trio had set off for the remote area last summer to escape the world despite not having survival experience.

Trevala Jara, the women's stepsister, said they had only done research online and watched YouTube videos on the subject.

“We tried to stop them,” Jara was quoted as saying by the Gazette. “But they wouldn’t listen. Their minds were made up.”

The relative added that the sisters were worried about the state of the world, especially Rebecca, whose worldview had been altered by the pandemic.

“The fear overwhelmed her, most definitely,” said Jara, who recounted that Christine only joined her sister and nephew so that the pair wouldn't be alone.

Peter Francis Stager, an Arkansas resident who beat a police officer during the US Capitol Hill riots on January 6, 2021, has been sentenced to more than four years in prison.

During the riots, Stager struck a Metropolitan Police Department officer at least three times using a flagpole attached to an American flag. While Stager inflicted the physical damage, his fellow rioters pulled the officer, head first, into the crowd, outside the Capitol. Additionally, Stager stood over and hurled profanities at another officer, who was seriously injured at the time.

“Stager joined a prolonged, multi-assailant attack on police officers, which resulted in injuries to the officers," the court noted.

“Stager himself wielded a flagpole and used it to strike at a vulnerable officer, who, lying face down in a mob of rioters had no means of defending himself.”

According to the court filings, Stager was working as a truck driver when he found himself in Washington DC on January 5, 2021, due to a scheduling conflict with his dispatch. After delivering the load of produce he was transporting nearby, Stager decided to not leave for Arkansas due to the cost of fuel and the fact that he would not be making money on an empty load.

As Trump was holding the "Stop the Steal" rally on January 6, Stager decided to watch the speech, a decision that he will regret for the rest of his life - his lawyers told the court.

Amid the ongoing chip wars, China's new envoy to the US has issued a warning that Beijing will retaliate if the Biden administration imposes new restriction on technology.

Ambassador Xie Feng, during the Aspen Security Forum China said his country did not want a trade or technology war but its leaders won't sit on their hands if the US had something up its sleeve once again.

"The Chinese government cannot simply sit idly by. There's a Chinese saying that we will not...make provocations, but we will not flinch from provocations," said Xie.

"China, definitely...will give our response. But definitely it's not our hope to have a tit for tat. We don't want a trade war, technological war, we want to say goodbye to the Iron Curtain as well as the Silicon Curtain."

Xie, who took over the position in May, dropped a cheeky analogy, suggesting the US wanted to handicap China by creating unfair competition.

“This is like restricting the other side to wear outdated swimwear in a swimming contest, while you yourself are wearing a Speedo,” he said. “So this is not fair.”

We don't want a trade war, technological war, we want to say goodbye to the Iron Curtain as well as the Silicon Curtain." Xie, who took over the position in May, dropped a cheeky analogy, suggesting the US wanted to handicap China by creating unfair competition. “This is like restricting the other side to wear outdated swimwear in a swimming contest, while you yourself are wearing a Speedo,” he said. “So this is not fair.” WATCH | Micron fails China's security check Washington mulls comprehensive ban Xie's statement comes in the backdrop of reports claiming that Washington was planning to wrap up a proposal for a long-delayed programme to screen and possibly prohibit investment in China’s semiconductor, quantum-computing and artificial intelligence sectors. I think there have been a few guys, kind of questioned around what it was going to be like but it shot the lights out here," said the South African, one of several players with a background in the world's top Twenty20 competition, the Indian Premier League (IPL). MLC has backing from four IPL franchises including the Mumbai Indians, whose New York team began play on Friday. England opening batsman Jason Roy, Australian batsman Aaron Finch, South African pace bowler Kagiso Rabada and West Indies spinner Sunil Narine are among the foreign players drafted by the six teams. Other games will be played in Morrisville, North Carolina, before the playoffs and final return to Texas. As well as the involvement of IPL teams, Australia's Cricket Victoria has a high-performance partnership with the San Francisco Unicorns and Cricket New South Wales has a similar role with the Washington Freedom. The league has broadcast deals with streaming service Willow TV, whose owners are also investors in MLC, and also with Viacom18 in India.
A new, terrifying drone footage captured off the coast of California has shocked the netizens, showing how close the great white sharks swim to humans. The footage shot by wildlife photographer Kevin Christopherson at San Onofre State Beach, a popular surfing destination in San Diego shows the moment unsuspecting surfers received the company of these sharks.

In the video, at least three huge great white sharks can be seen swimming around at least a dozen surfers. Most of them did not seem to have any clue that the apex predators were a few metres away from them.

This is not the first instance when sharks have been spotted near the beach. Last year in October, during one of the surfing competitions, veteran surf photographer Jordan Anast managed to capture a great white rocketing out of the water and then splashing down.

Notably, a recent study by California State University found that sharks swim much closer to humans than previously imagined. The researchers arrived at the conclusion after conducting over 1,500 drone flights spanning two years in southern Santa Barbara County and central San Diego County.

"In both spots, the sharks were observed swimming near humans on 97 per cent of the days surveyed, and often within 50 yards of wave breaks. The sharks generally came closest to surfers and stand-up paddle boarders," the study revealed.

Panama stunned the United States on Wednesday by winning their CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-final 5-4 on penalties in San Diego to set up a final with Mexico. Mexico, record eight-times Gold Cup champions, reached Sunday's decider with a 3-0 win over Jamaica in Las Vegas. Mexico will start as favourites against a Panama team that have never won the regional competition for North and Central America and the Caribbean --- but have reached the final twice before, losing to the USA in 2005 and 2013.

The USA, who selected a squad without their main Europe-based players, miss out on a place in the final for only the second time since 2003. They bowed out on penalties after the game ended 1-1 after extra time. "Getting into this final is the dream of every Panamanian. We had to suffer to get this victory but that is how it is best savoured," said Panama coach Thomas Christiansen.

The USA started brightly in the late afternoon Californian sunshine, with Cade Cowell hitting the post in the first minute. Panama had an effort from Edgar Barcenas in the 29th ruled out for offside and American goalkeeper Matt Turner had to be alert in the 53rd minute to keep out a header from Ismael Diaz. Brandon Vazquez, given a start after three goals in the tournament as a substitute, then missed a good opportunity, firing high from close range after good work from Cowell.

There was drama in stoppage time when Diaz had the ball in the net but was flagged for offside. Panama claimed that Djordje Mihailovic had handled the ball but VAR found nothing and backed the offside call. The USA had needed extra time and penalties to get past Canada in their quarter-final, but they were short of creativity against a determined Panama.

Panama grabbed the lead in the ninth minute of the first period of extra time when Adalberto Carrasquilla lofted the ball over the top and Ivan Anderson went round the out-rushing Turner and slotted into the unguarded goal. But six minutes later the USA levelled through a Jesus Ferreira volley after Jordan Morris had headed down a long ball into the box.

Painful defeat

With both sides tiring in the heat, the game went to the shoot-out. There was an unsavoury moment when US defender Matt Miazga, after converting his kick, shouted in the face of Cecilio Waterman as he walked up to the spot. The Panama forward kept his cool and slotted home. That kick took the contest into sudden death and goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera was the hero, diving to save Cristian Roldan's effort. That left Carrasquilla needing to convert for victory and the midfielder made no mistake to set off the celebrations for the Central Americans.

USA interim coach B.J. Callaghan, who will now be replaced by the returning Gregg Berhalter, said despite the defeat his young team had gained valuable tournament experience. "What I said to the guys was I'm super proud of them. I'm super proud that they stuck together, they continued to respond to adversity," he said. "This is going to hurt in the short term, but I truly believe in the long term we've gotten a lot of players a lot of experience, and it's going to pay dividends for us in the future."

Mexico got off to a flying start against the Reggae Boyz, taking the lead in the second minute through a clinical finish from Henry Martin. Luis Chavez doubled the lead on the half hour with a magnificent free-kick which rose over the wall and then dipped under the bar into the top corner. Michail Antonio went close twice for Jamaica in the second half but Mexico remained in control and made sure of victory and a place in the final in Las Vegas when Roberto Alvarado side-footed home a low cross in stoppage time.

Donald Trump might be staring at an uphill legal battle after the Department of Justice (DoJ) on Tuesday reversed its earlier position in a lawsuit brought by writer E. Jean Carroll.

The Justice Department said it will not argue that Trump's derogatory statements regarding Carroll in 2019 were made in an official capacity as the president. Up until now, both under Trump and President Joe Biden's tenure, the department had been steadfast that Trump was acting in official capacity when he called Carroll a liar and denied her rape accusations.

However, in the court documents filed on Tuesday, the department said new evidence had surfaced since Trump left office, including the recent civil trial, in which the Republican leader was forced to pay $5 million in damages by the Manhattan grand jury for sexually assaulting Carroll.

WATCH | Donald Trump sexually abused writer E Jean Carroll, US jury rules

The reversal leaves Trump exposed to further damages who will now have to turn to his own legal team rather than one from the government to bail him out. When Carroll first sued Trump, William P. Barr, the then attorney general, intervened under a law that substitutes the government as the defendant when a federal official is sued for official acts, leading to automatic dismissal of the case.

Contrasting statements from both sides

Carroll's attorney Roberta Kaplan said they welcomed the decision taken by the DoJ.

“We are grateful that the Department of Justice has reconsidered its position. We have always believed that Donald Trump made his defamatory statements about our client in June 2019 out of personal animus, ill will and spite, and not as president of the United States," she said.

"Now that one of the last obstacles has been removed, we look forward to trial in E Jean Carroll’s original case in January 2024.”

Meanwhile, Trump's side said the Joe Biden administration was "politically weaponising the justice system" against him. Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump dismissed the DoJ's move as “a partisan sham”.

Also read | 'This verdict is for all women': E. Jean Carroll after jury holds Trump guilty of sexually abusing her

WATCH | Donald Trump sexually abused writer E Jean Carroll, US jury rules × The reversal leaves Trump exposed to further damages who will now have to turn to his own legal team rather than one from the government to bail him out. When Carroll first sued Trump, William P. Barr, the then attorney general, intervened under a law that substitutes the government as the defendant when a federal official is sued for official acts, leading to automatic dismissal of the case. Contrasting statements from both sides Carroll's attorney Roberta Kaplan said they welcomed the decision taken by the DoJ. “We are grateful that the Department of Justice has reconsidered its position. We have always believed that Donald Trump made his defamatory statements about our client in June 2019 out of personal animus, ill will and spite, and not as president of the United States," she said. "Now that one of the last obstacles has been removed, we look forward to trial in E Jean Carroll’s original case in January 2024.” Meanwhile, Trump's side said the Joe Biden administration was "politically weaponising the justice system" against him. Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump dismissed the DoJ's move as “a partisan sham”. Also read | 'This verdict is for all women': E.
In a seal of approval on India's growth story, investment bank Goldman Sachs has said the country is poised to become the world's second-largest economy by 2075, surpassing the likes of Japan, Germany and the United States.

The recent report states that favourable demographics, innovation and technology, higher capital investment and rising worker productivity will drive India's growth. Currently, India is ranked the world's fifth-largest economy, trailing Germany, Japan, China and the US.

India to overtake US to become second-largest economy by 2075: Report

The southern states of the US housing nearly 50 million Americans are expected to face dangerously high temperatures this week. From Texas to Florida to Arizona to Southern California, heat advisories are in effect with the public warned that triple-digit temperatures may remain the norm.

According to experts, currently, a ridge of high pressure, also called a heat dome, is developing over the southern states. The ridge, growing in size over New Mexico is bringing hot, dry and sinking air. In the coming days, it will swell from California and Mexico’s Baja Peninsula to the Deep South. Meaning, the jet stream and cooler winds will be blown to the northern US states while the south bakes.

“Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities,” warned the National Weather Service in Las Vegas.

Reports stated that California, Arizona and New Mexico will witness the hottest temperatures. The Death Valley in California may see temperatures in excess of 52.7C (127F) with the possibility of touching 54.4C (130F). If that happens, it will be among the highest temperatures ever reliably recorded on the planet.

The financial and entertainment city of Las Vegas may hit 117F on Sunday, tying its highest temperature on record. In Texas's border city of El Paso, the record for most consecutive 100F days was broken on Sunday. The new record is 24, beating the 23 days set in 1994.

Why is the heat dangerous?

The heat in the southwest region is dangerous because it dehydrates people. With bone-dry humidity, any sweat on the human body evaporates before it can perform its natural, cooling action.

The problems will be compounded as overnight temperatures may not dip below the mid-30s (80F). While cooling shelters are open in the daytime, very few remain open 24 hours a day. Those working outside or homeless will be the most vulnerable of the lot.

Nearly 50 million in southern US states to bake under scorching heatwave

US President Joe Biden provided ammo to his critics once again after he appeared dazed and confused during his visit to the United Kingdom.

Biden met King Charles III for the first time since the latter's coronation earlier this year. The US president had skipped the ceremony at the time, setting some bitterness between the two parties. On Monday, Biden paid a visit to the king but the headlines took a different turn.

In a video clip going viral on social media, the pair can be seen greeting each other and later taking part in the inspection of the guard outside Windsor Castle. Biden seemingly walked in front of the monarch, a breach of protocol, repeating the mistake of his predecessor Donald Trump when the Republican leader meted the same treatment to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

At the end of the line, Biden stopped and started speaking to a guard. The conversation went at length and a visibly agitated King Charles III could be seen trying to lead Biden away from the guard. During the incident, Charles appeared to direct his anger at the guard before walking away.

Despite the king's insistence, Biden continued speaking to the guard. It was only after a few moments that Biden looked back and forth between the monarch and the guard and decided to follow the king, away from the lineup of soldiers.

After whisking the president away, Charles put his hand behind Biden's back. A few moments later, Biden also put his hand behind the king, sparking speculations that it was a breach of the protocols. However, a Buckingham Palace source told People that Biden did not break any protocol as the monarch was "entirely comfortable" with the encounter.

How is this even real? King Charles has to show Biden where to go. We are a laughing stock. pic.twitter.com/ZvWfAlbxeL — Ryan Fournier (@RyanAFournier) July 10, 2023 × Netizens question Biden The internet, however, was split on Biden's actions. A section took to Twitter, widely sharing the video and criticising Biden for once again looking absent-minded. "How is this even real? King Charles has to show Biden where to go. We are a laughing stock," said one netizen while another added, "74-year-old King Charles has to lead 80-year-old Biden around." Biden last had formal talks with Charles at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow in November 2021.
Safe Street Rebel, an organisation batting for pedestrian safety and reducing the number of cars on roads, has employed a novel method to lodge its protest against driverless cars. In the US city of San Francisco, the members of the group are placing traffic cones on the hoods of driverless vehicles which bring them to a halt.

A video of the protest with step-by-step instructions on how to disable autonomous vehicles (AV) is going viral on social media platforms. According to the group, the cone protest is a way to build 'cone-sensus' against driverless cars.
