The National Weather Service said that a total of nine tornadoes were reported in Kansas and Oklahoma.&nbsp;

During the severe weather, more than 175 storms were recorded. The affected areas were hit by wind and hail, with most of the storms being reported in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Winds gust equivalent to that of a Category 3 hurricane were recorded In Memphis, Texas.&nbsp;

The tornado in Norman Sunday night was at least an EF-2, an initial survey information by the National Weather Service office has confirmed. The path of the tornado will continue to be surveyed “where significant damage is reported to have occurred,” the weather service said. More details about the tornado will be released once the survey is complete.&nbsp;

On Monday afternoon, tornado watches were issued for parts of Ohio, northeastern Kentucky, western West Virginia, eastern Indiana and far northern Kentucky.&nbsp;

In Nevada, blizzard conditions battered Crystal Bay, on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Strong wind and icy conditions could be seen at Tahoe-lake-level. The storm is expected to blast through the area from Monday to Wednesday, bringing with it up to 1.8 metres (6 feet) of snow and 160 kilometres per hour (100 mph) wind gusts. Vessels in the Tahoe Lake are in danger of being toppled by huge waves. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel for the duration.&nbsp;

A blizzard warning is also in effect for the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, with the area likely to receive between two and six feet of snow.

Meanwhile, questions are being raised against the response of the authorities, with Poloncarz calling the city's handling "embarrassing".

Criticisms are being specifically directed to the delay in issuing travel ban orders by the officials.

'Once-in-a-lifetime' weather disaster leaves at least 60 dead in US

A devastating winter storm is&nbsp;wreaking havoc in the eastern US leaving millions of Americans fighting brutal weather with at least 55 people in the United States killed so far,&nbsp;including 25 in western New York's Erie County, local media outlets reported.&nbsp;

Buffalo, in western New York, is currently being slammed by a blizzard, creating a crisis situation since emergency services are unable to reach high-impact areas.&nbsp;

Erie County executive Mark Poloncarz said in a press briefing:&nbsp;"In addition to the 13 confirmed deaths yesterday, the Erie County Department of Health medical examiner's office has confirmed an additional 12 deaths, bringing the total for the blizzard to 25 deaths county-wide."&nbsp;

"It is (like) going to a warzone, and the vehicles along the sides of the roads are shocking," said New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a native of Buffalo, where eight-foot (2.4-meter) snow drifts and power outages have made for life-threatening conditions.&nbsp;

Hochul told reporters Sunday evening that residents were still in the throes of a "very dangerous life-threatening situation" and warned everyone should remain indoors.

Historically dangerous conditions are being reported from the Buffalo region where people are witnessing hours-long whiteouts. Emergency workers are struggling to search for those in need of help with dead bodies being found in vehicles and under snow banks.&nbsp;

The city's international airport remains closed until Tuesday and a driving ban remained in effect for all of Erie County. This year's storm is officially the deadliest winter storm the region has witnessed, surpassing the prior landmark snowstorm of 1977 in "intensity, the longevity, the ferocity of the winds."

"We now have what'll be talked about not just today but for generations (as) the blizzard of '22," Hochul said.&nbsp;

Due to frozen electric substations, some residents were not expected to regain power until Tuesday, with one frozen substation reportedly buried under 18 feet of snow, a senior county official said.

Over 200,000 people across several eastern states were without power on Christmas morning. Holiday travel has been hit, leaving several travellers stranded owing to the five-day-long storm featuring blizzard conditions and ferocious winds showed signs of easing. All 48 contiguous US states witnessed below freezing temperatures over the weekend.&nbsp;

The chill is expected to stay for the Christmas weekend, making this the coldest Christmas in about 40 years, say forecasters.

Those hoping to spend the Christmas holidays with their loved ones were left disappointed after the airlines cancelled more than 2,200 US flights by 1 pm ET on Thursday, and proactively cancelled more than 900 flights on Friday, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware.

And the flight delays were even more pronounced, affecting more than 3,700 on Thursday.

Chicago and Denver were hit hardest by flight cancellations on Thursday, FlightAware data show.

At Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport, flights delays were averaging 159 minutes, as snow and ice made it impossible for an early take off, the Federal Aviation Administration stated in a notice, reports CNN.

Anticipating further travel disruptions, major airlines like United, Delta and American, have started to waive fees for travellers who wish to reschedule their flights.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden warned US citizens travelling during the Christmas week to be careful and leave early if possible to avoid the massive storm expected to hit several states.

“This is not like a snow day when you were a kid. This is serious stuff,” Biden said.

According to the NWS, bone-chilling temperatures of -50F (-45C) and -70F were expected by the end of this week in some parts of the country.

Weather forecasters believe that this winter storm could transform into a "bomb cyclone", a type of powerful, rapidly strengthening storm, by Friday.

The winter storm is expected to trigger snowfall and powerful winds, causing damage and power outages in the Midwest and Canada.
