On Tuesday (March 14), a Russian Su-27 fighter jet forced down a United States MQ-9 (Reaper) drone over the Black Sea. Following the collision, US officials called the crash "reckless." The US State Department summoned the Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov over the incident. Responding to Washington's claims, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned that the relations between the two countries are at their lowest. But lowest since when? The Black Sea collision is not the first confrontation between the two, and there have been multiple, and much worse, incidents. Below are some of the worst US-Russia confrontations in the recent past:

During the times of erstwhile Soviet Union, there have been several nuclear close calls during the Cold War, the Cuban missile crisis and many more. The downing of the U-2 spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers in 1960 is the most famous incident that created major embarrassment for the US.

Why was the US drone flying over the Black Sea?

The United States reconnaissance missions have been a regular practice over the Black Sea and the area has been heavily militarised since Russia annexed Crimea in the year 2014.

Why the fury over the downing of Reaper? The ongoing war in Ukraine is one reason, where the Russians for instance have capitalised on Kyiv and has caused damage worth billions of dollars.

US-Russia conflicts:

In February 2018, a US contingent in eastern Syria clashed with a force advancing their military base including members of Russia's private military group "Wagner." However, Moscow back then denied the existence of its mercenary group but also highlighted the presence of a long stand "deconfliction line" between the US and Russia.

The United States also called for air strikes and artillery on the other group, killing dozens of Wagner mercenaries and the Syrian allies. As per CNN, the battle between the two was the deadliest encounter between US forces and Russian fighters since the end of the Cold War in the 1990s.

Another instance was the Korean war when the US fighter pilots engaged in several aerial combats against Soviet MiGs. Washington even carried out several surveillance flights.

One of the declassified instances was the one that occurred in Soviet Armenia, where the downing of Flight 60528, a US C-130 on a spy mission killed 17 people.

The US also acknowledged that over 40 reconnaissance aircraft were shot down between 1945 and 1977 on such spy missions.

Drone downing is latest in US-Russia confrontations. Here's a list of past faceoffs

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, on Friday (March 17) awarded the two pilots who were involved in intercepting a United States MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Black Sea amid Moscow’s ongoing “special military operation” in Ukraine. This comes after the US has previously accused Russia of an “unsafe” and “unprofessional” intercept of its MQ-9 Reaper surveillance drone which eventually crashed in the Black Sea on Tuesday.

The Russian military has said that they scrambled the air defence unit jets after detecting the US drone but has denied causing the crash and said that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) had lost control, a claim the US disputed. While repeating its version of the events, the Russian ministry announced the awards on Friday.

“As a result of sharp manoeuvring around 9:30 am (Moscow time), the MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle went into uncontrolled flight with a loss of altitude and collided with the water surface,” said the Russian military in a statement, as per Reuters.

The defence minister Shoigu presented the awards to the two Su-27 pilots for “preventing” the US drone from “violating” international airspace restrictions placed by Moscow amid what it describes as its “special military operation” in Ukraine, reported The Moscow Times.

The statement added, “The drone flew with its transponders off, violating the boundaries of the area of the temporary airspace usage regime established for the special military operation (and) communicated to all users of international airspace.”

The US military, which also released a 42-second video on Thursday of the incident said that the drone was on a routine mission when it was intercepted over the Black Sea in international airspace. It also alleged that the fighter jets dumped fuel on the drone during the encounter that lasted 30-40 minutes before one of MQ-9 Reaper drone’s propellers got damaged and it crashed into the sea.

Russian mercenary group Wagner’s chief reveals ‘political ambitions’, to run for Ukraine’s president in 2024

The head of the Russian mercenary group Wagner has warned that unless his troops are fortified with ammunition, Moscow's position in the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut is in peril. This, as per Reuters, can be seen as the latest sign of tensions between the Kremlin and the private militia chief. Ukrainian military officials and analysts too have reported reluctance on the part of Russia's 155th brigade leaders. Reportedly, after sustaining severe losses in fighting near the town of Vuhledar, south of Bakhmut, they are resisting orders to attack.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner chief, said that Russia's front lines could collapse if his forces did not receive the ammunition that Moscow had promised in February.

"For now, we are trying to figure out the reason: is it just ordinary bureaucracy or a betrayal," said Prigozhin on Telegram. He was referring to the absence of ammunition.

Germany’s foreign minister on Sunday said that her government would not stand in the way of Poland sending its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. For Ukrainian officials who have been calling on its western allies to supply them with german-made tanks for months, this could be the big breakthrough Kyiv has been waiting for. Berlin has till now stood in the way of sending the tanks itself or allowing other NATO nations to do so.

Replying to a question about Germany’s reaction to Poland possibly sending the Leopard 2 tanks without Germany’s permission, Annalena Baerbock, the German foreign minister said, "for the moment the question has not been asked, but if we were asked we would not stand in the way." Baerbock was in a conversation with France’s LCI TV.

Russia using its New Year's assault to 'kill as many civilians as possible', claim Ukrainian officials

Russian Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday issued an ultimatum to Ukraine and said that "the enemy" knows Moscow's proposals for settlement and that if Kyiv fails to fulfil them for good the Russian army will take the matter into their own hands and decide the issue.

"Our proposals for the demilitarisation and denazification of the territories controlled by the regime, the elimination of threats to Russia's security emanating from there, including our new lands, are well known to the enemy," said Lavrov as per a TASS agency report.

Defiant Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine will not bow down, but create its own ‘Christmas miracle’

Despite repeatedly denying needing more recruits for its war in Ukraine, Russia as per reports has begun a propaganda campaign to try and enlist volunteers. For this, the country is using narratives like patriotism, morality and money.

As per a CNN report, the said videos have been posted on social media networks in the past few days.

One video reportedly posted on December 14 shows a young man opting to fight instead of partying with his peers. In the next segment of the video, he can be seen buying himself a car he made from the fighting while on a military contract to fight in Ukraine.

Another video shows a soldier being hounded by his ex-girlfriend to get back together. Purportedly the said woman is impressed by his "courage".

Yet another shows a factory worker leaving a low-paying job to sign up for a comparatively lucrative military contract.

German chancellor Scholz says 'Russia has stopped threatening to use nuclear weapons'

German chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday said that it would be a grave mistake to completely stop talking to Russia and its President Vladimir Putin.

Scholz's remarks come just two days after he held a telephone conversation with Putin. During their conversation on Friday (December 2), the chancellor reportedly pressed the Russian leader to seek a diplomatic end to the war in Ukraine.

Referring to the call, Scholz as per Reuters said "I have spoken to him (Putin) repeatedly since then because I am firmly convinced that it is a grave mistake if, despite all the differences, and this is, after all, a small word for huge differences, we no longer talk to each other at all."

He added that "it is also important that the French president and I, as representatives of the G7 countries, as two NATO countries, keep seeking dialogue again. However, we do so without any illusions because they are always long conversations and because all the public statements we hear to justify this war are repeated there."

In a statement released after the one-hour call, Scholz's spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit said that the chancellor condemned Russian airstrikes on civilian infrastructure "and stressed Germany's determination to support Ukraine in ensuring the defence capability against Russian aggression".

However, as per AFP Putin accused the West of pursuing "destructive policies" and also warned that the attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure are "inevitable", adding that thanks to the "political and financial support" from its western allies, " Kyiv completely rejects the idea of any negotiations".

Ukraine provides proof to back its claims of fresh Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure

The United States and its allies will soon announce a price cap on Russian oil exports, as punishment for the country's invasion of its neighbour Ukraine.

As per Reuters, the Group of Seven (G7) nations, the European Union and Australia are slated to begin implementing the price cap starting December 5th and the coalition will probably adjust the level a few times a year and not monthly.

This cap aims to keep oil flowing to international markets and prevent price spikes while depriving Moscow of a key source of revenues for its war machine.

As per an AFP report citing a senior US Treasury official, the European Union is talking with its members about the price level.

Once the EU's procedure is complete, the broader coalition will take action to apply the cap.

US and allies to announce price cap on Russian oil; move will help cut Moscow's revenues for its war machine

A bipartisan group of 16 US senators in a letter have asked the joe Biden administration to carefully reconsider giving Ukraine the lethal Gray Eagle drones to fight Russia.

Several senators, including Republican Joni Ernst and Democrat Joe Manchin, who are both members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, have expressed alarm at US opposition to the proposal and stated that providing the armable drone "demands careful reconsideration."

Reuters reports that the group has asked Pentagon to explain why Ukraine's request for the drones has so far been rejected. Ukraine has made multiple appeals for the said drones. Here's all you need to know:

Why are these drones special?

The MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone as per Reuters has an operational ceiling of 29,000 feet. This capability can go a long way in helping Ukraine in its defence and would "represent a great technological leap" for the country.

Does Ukraine only want these particular drones?

No, as Russia increasingly uses kamikaze drones and targets civilian infrastructure, Ukraine has made several requests for the United States to give it sophisticated drones. Its most recent request was for anti-drone missiles.

Why is the US hesitant to grant Ukraine's request?

While the Pentagon hasn't publicly stated its position, it is believed that the denial was motivated by worries that the drones could intensify the conflict and the belief that they are not necessary for Ukraine's military effort. Additionally, there are concerns that drones might be shot down.

The senators as per a Wall Street Journal report have given Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin until November 30 to respond to their questions. They want to know why the Pentagon considered the drone, produced by General Atomics, was inappropriate for the conflict in Ukraine; whether US worries about technology transfer could be alleviated; and whether the Pentagon feared that launching the drone would further enrage Russia.

The United States on Monday said that Russia in its invasion of its neighbour had engaged in a number of atrocities, including the murder, torture, and kidnapping of Ukrainian citizens, crimes which might implicate high-ranking authorities in war crimes.

US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Beth Van Schaack was quoted by AFP as saying that there was mounting evidence that the invasion "has been accompanied by systemic war crimes committed in every region where Russian forces have been deployed."

The United States on Monday said that Russia in its invasion of its neighbour had engaged in a number of atrocities, including the murder, torture, and kidnapping of Ukrainian citizens, crimes which might implicate high-ranking authorities in war crimes. US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Beth Van Schaack was quoted by AFP as saying that there was mounting evidence that the invasion "has been accompanied by systemic war crimes committed in every region where Russian forces have been deployed." Van Schaack called the situation a "new Nuremberg moment," referring to the war crimes trials that took place in the German city at the conclusion of World War II. Also read | What are war crimes? As per AFP, Sullivan also said that the longer-term threat posed by Russia to other southern Ukrainian cities, such as Odesa, will be lessened, and that the Russian pullback will have broader strategic implications.

"It's a big moment and it's due to the incredible tenacity and skill of the Ukrainians, backed by the relentless and united support of the United States and our allies," said Sullivan.

US hails Ukraine’s ‘extraordinary victory’ in Kherson, says it will have ‘broader strategic implications’

The US and Russia have decided to resume talks related to the New START nuclear arms reduction deal, which was put on hold since before Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

New START, or Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, was signed between the United States and Russia. Its formal name is Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms. It is the only surviving weapons control pact between the two biggest nuclear powers in the world.

The bilateral consultative committee (BCC), the mechanism for its implementation, will meet "in the near future," said Ned Price, spokesperson for the US State Department, on Tuesday.

Moscow blamed travel restrictions put in place by Washington and its allies in response to the invasion of Ukraine in February for this move. Despite this, Russia claimed that it was still committed to observing the provisions of the treaty.
