The 2026 US Open is drawing to a close, with only a handful of matches remaining in the men's and women's singles events before the winners are decided. There's one player, however, who has stolen the spotlight: Teo Davidov, the 16-year-old US prodigy from Denver, Colorado, who is captivating fans at the US Open Boys' Junior event. What makes him unique is his ability to hit a forehand and serve with both hands, rarely relying on a backhand. He is the only player in the men's, women's, or junior events at this year's US Open who plays almost exclusively with forehands. He can hit a backhand but doesn't bother with it, being the ambidextrous player he is.
Who is Teo Davidov?
Davidov has been on the junior circuit for five years now, and a four-year-old video of him outplaying Carlos Alcaraz's brother Jamie at a tournament in Greece in 2022 is wildly popular on YouTube. Now, the teenager is 5-foot-7 and has become much sharper in his shot-making.

Aryna Sabalenka is unstoppable right now, and her US Open 2026 women's singles opponent Jessica Pegula agrees after being on the receiving end at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Thursday (Sep 10).
Wimbledon takes a firm stance against influencers
In light of the chaos in New York, Wimbledon has chosen a strictly anti-influencer approach. According to the Press Association, Wimbledon organizers do not plan to offer a special accreditation category for influencers and will prohibit or confiscate equipment that could disrupt play, such as ring lights.Adding to the criticism of crowd behavior at Flushing Meadows, Adrian Mannarino spoke out after his match: "People are allowed to move around in the crowd during points. Poland's six-time Grand Slam singles champion Iga Swiatek sailed into the second round with a straight sets victory over China's Wang Xiyu. Eighth-seeded Swiatek, who defeated Sabalenka on the way to her lone US Open triumph in 2022, eased past Wang 6-2, 6-3 in 1hr 28min. "It was a good day in the office," Swiatek said afterwards. "I felt pretty good right from the beginning and I had the energy and the intensity. I want to keep it that way." Elsewhere Frenchman Arthur Fils, flying high after his first ATP Masters title in Cincinnati, was brought back to earth by Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 4-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-1, 6-4. Tsitsipas bagged his first win over 22-year-old Fis in six encounters. "I am speechless, I don't know what to say," said Tsitsipas, a former top five player who has slumped to 53 in the world. "It's an amazing start to the tournament." With top-seeded German Alexander Zverev due to open his campaign on Tuesday, Monday night's showcourt action on Ashe saw American eighth seed Ben Shelton overcome a rocky start before booking his place in the second round with a four-set defeat of the Netherlands' Tallon Griekspoor. Shelton looked out of sorts as Griekspoor roared through the first set with three breaks of serve to win 6-1. But Shelton turned the tables to score a 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 victory in 2hr 35min. "Started off with a little bit of nerves tonight, but I found my rhythm," Shelton said. The final game on the Ashe court sees Naomi Osaka, whose four Grand Slam titles include two US Opens, take on Anastasia Zakharova.

Alcaraz is trying to bookend his season with Grand Slam titles after his Australian Open triumph in January made him the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam.

US Open 2026: Serena-Alcaraz crash out in mixed doubles quarter-final

The US Open 2026, year's last tennis grand slam to be played from Aug 30, will be played without players protesting over the prize money as they had done prior to French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year. This comes after the US Open announced a 20 percent increase in prize money, making it $5.5 million for the winners of men's and women's singles. The total prize money at the Flushing Meadows would be a record $108 million. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz set to comeback in US Open

The French Open has become the first grand slam to offer players a share of tournament revenue, marking a big shift in the ongoing prize money row between organisers and players. Roland Garros officials made the offer to players' representative Larry Scott during talks held at Wimbledon about two weeks ago. While nothing has been finalised yet, the move puts Roland Garros ahead of the other three majors and turns up the heat on the US Open, which is set to announce its own prize fund for this year's edition early next month. Also Read - FIFA 2026 | 'I am truly sorry': Argentina's Enzo Fernandez, who get red card in final, reacts to loss
What is the row over prize money and how it affects US Open?
The dispute goes back to All England Club chair Debbie Jevans' comment last month that tying prize money to tournament revenue made "no sense" which didn't go down well with players, who briefly threatened to boycott media duties during Wimbledon's opening week before calling it off. The 32-year-old former US Open champion, who has been open about seeking redemption after an infamous locker-smashing incident at Oakmont following last year's missed cut, began on the back nine and looked in imperious form throughout. Clark hit a bogey at the par-three second before bouncing back with consecutive birdies, capping his extraordinary back nine with a clutch three-foot eagle putt at the par-five fifth to reach six-under par before safely parring holes six and seven as darkness descended.
Clarks chases history on Day 2 US Open
Clark will return Friday (Jun 19) morning to complete the round on holes eight and nine, and if he holds his lead, he will make US Open history not since 1933 has any player led the championship by four strokes after 18 holes. The feat underlines just how dominant his unfinished card has been in punishing, wind-swept conditions that tested the entire field. Sharing second place in the clubhouse at two-under par 68 were amateur Ryder Cowan and fellow Americans Sam Stevens and Max McGreevy, all well adrift of Clark's stunning pace. Four major champions remained on the course at two-under: Spain's Jon Rahm (13 holes), Dustin Johnson and Gary Woodland (15 holes), and England's Matt Fitzpatrick (16 holes). Also Read - Colombian fan cycles over 4,000km across capitals to support team at World Cup
Top 10 leaderboard after Round 1 (suspended)
Wyndham Clark: 6-under (incomplete, 7 holes remaining) Ryder Cowan: 2-under Sam Stevens: 2-under Max McGreevy: 2-under Jon Rahm: 2-under (incomplete, 5 holes remaining) Dustin Johnson: 2-under (incomplete, 3 holes remaining) Gary Woodland: 2-under (incomplete, 3 holes remaining) Matt Fitzpatrick: 2-under (incomplete, 2 holes remaining) Rory McIlroy: 1-under (69) Ludvig Aberg: 1-under (69)

Djokovic, 38, continued his latest bid for a record 25th Grand Slam singles title with a brisk 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 defeat of unseeded German Jan-Lennard Struff. "It definitely helps if you serve well. I think I had a great serving performance last round and also tonight," said Djokovic. "That helps make it easier on the court." Djokovic faces a quarter-final on Tuesday against fourth seed Taylor Fritz, the lone American man left in the draw. Fritz sprinted into the last eight with a brisk 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 defeat of the Czech Republic's Tomas Machac in 1hr 38min. Fritz is carrying hopes of first US men's Grand Slam champion since Andy Roddick in 2003 following the exits of fellow seeds Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe. But Fritz will head into his quarter-final against Djokovic with history stacked against him. Djokovic has won all 10 of their past meetings, including a 2023 quarter-final win at the US Open. "I think the first, almost like seven or eight times I played him, I probably just wasn't a good enough player to really have that much of a chance," said Fritz. "I think only the last couple times we've played I think I've been this just better player that can, you know, I'd say compete and have chances." Sabalenka balance In the women's draw, Sabalenka never looked troubled in a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Moldova-born Spaniard Cristina Bucsa, ranked 95th in the world. Sabalenka has now reached the quarter-finals or better at 12 straight Grand Slam tournaments, a consistency she attributes to striking a balance in her life on and off the court. "I'm super proud, I think that's an incredible achievement," Sabalenka said. "I think for me the key was balancing on and off-the-court life. I think I've done a great job on balancing really hard work and also great recovery and some fun time outside of tennis court. I think that's been the key." Sabalenka faces a quarter-final against either ninth seed Elena Rybakina or the Czech Republic's Marketa Vondrousova, who were playing later Sunday. In other women's draw action on Sunday, the Czech Republic's unseeded former French Open and Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova conjured a remarkable escape to oust Taylor Townsend, saving an incredible eight match points before digging out a 1-6, 7-6 (15/13), 6-3 victory. Krejcikova fought off a match point on her own serve at 5-4 down in the second set, and then somehow survived seven match points in an enthralling tie-breaker to move on. "What a match," said Krejcikova, who revealed she had wondered if she would ever play tennis again after missing the opening months of the season with a back injury. "I was sidelined for six months and didn't know if I would ever play again. I'm super happy I can be here." Krejcikova will face American fourth seed Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals. Pegula, beaten in the final last year, advanced to the last eight after breezing past compatriot Ann Li 6-1, 6-2 on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

US Open 2025: Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka won their respective singles R4 matches to enter the quarter-finals in the year's last grand slam.

She took only two sets to beat Minnen 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the second round where she'll now face home town girl Hailey Baptiste. While Osaka has definitely aced her outfit and appearance, she'd like to go to distance in the year's last major and possibly end the grand slam drought which is going on since she won Australian Open in 2021.

Naomi Osaka's sprakly red roses in ponytail along with a ‘Billie Jean Bling’ Labubu doll stole the limelight at the US Open 2025 during her 6-3, 6-4 first round win over Greet Minnen in straight sets.

Naomi Osaka won her first round women's singles match in the US Open 2025 in straight sets against Greet Minnen but it was her outfit and Labubu doll which created more buzz. The former world number 1 and two-time US Open winner (2018 and 2020) is currently seeded no. 23 and is vying hard to regain her lost position in women's tennis. It was a perfect start for her at the Flushing Meadows which she matched with her sparkly roses in her hair. Naomi Osaka US Open 2025 outfit The Japanese player, after the win, spoke at length about her appearance in Nike outfit - something which was in works for a long time. The outfit included a red outfit with sparkles, red roses with more sparkles in her ponytail and a sparkly Labubu doll to go with which she named "Billie Jean Bling" after famous American women's tennis player Billie Jean King. Alex Eala has made the kind of history that transcends sport. At just 20 years old, she became the first player from the Philippines to win a main-draw singles match at a Grand Slam, defeating Denmark’s Clara Tauson in a dramatic opening-round match at the US Open on Monday (August 25). The three-set score line — 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11) — barely captures the intensity of the battle. Eala led with composure in the first set, faltered in the second, and looked on the brink of defeat in the third when Tauson surged ahead 5-1. But the young Filipina, backed by a noisy crowd that included many from New York’s Filipino community, dug in with remarkable resilience. Point by point, she clawed her way back, eventually forcing a tiebreak that stretched into the kind of nail-biting finish that tests every ounce of nerve. When Tauson’s final shot drifted wide, Eala dropped to her knees in tears, overwhelmed by the magnitude of the achievement.
A major breakthrough
For the Philippines, a country with a rich sporting culture but little tradition of tennis success, Eala’s victory is a breakthrough decades in the making. No Filipino player, male or female, had ever advanced beyond the opening round of a Grand Slam singles draw. Eala’s triumph not only rewrote the record books but also sent a surge of pride across her nation, where she has long been seen as a trailblazer. Eala herself was quick to acknowledge that the moment was bigger than her. “It’s not just about me,” she was quoted saying courtside. “This is about inspiring kids back home, about showing them that we can belong on this stage.”
Rising through the ranks
Eala’s rise has been steady, marked by milestones that hinted at this historic breakthrough. As a teenager, she trained at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain, a move that sharpened her technical skills and exposed her to world-class competition. In 2022, she won the US Open girls’ singles title, becoming the first Filipina to capture a junior Grand Slam trophy. That triumph signaled her potential, but the path to the professional level was anything but straightforward. Injuries and the pressures of transition slowed her early steps on the WTA Tour, yet Eala kept pushing. This year has been her true coming-of-age. She made headlines at the Miami Open by beating former Grand Slam champions and reaching the semifinals, a first for a Filipino player. Later, on grass, she reached the final in Eastbourne, again breaking new ground for her country. Each of those moments felt historic, but nothing compares to what she achieved in New York.
Filipino diaspora at Flushing Meadows
The Filipino diaspora made its presence felt at Flushing Meadows, waving flags, chanting her name, and transforming the Grandstand Court into a sea of blue, red, and yellow. For many, it was a moment of collective identity — watching one of their own succeed at the sport’s highest level. Back home, news of Eala’s win spread rapidly. Social media lit up with messages from fellow athletes, politicians, and fans who hailed her as a symbol of perseverance. For a country where basketball and boxing dominate the sporting spotlight, Eala’s success is broadening the horizons of what is possible.
The road ahead for Alex Eala
Eala’s journey at this year’s US Open is far from over. Her second-round match will offer a fresh test, but regardless of how deep she goes in the draw, her place in history is already secure. What matters now is how she builds on this moment. With confidence growing and experience under her belt, Eala has the chance to carve out a long and impactful career on the WTA Tour. But perhaps the greater story lies beyond her individual success. Eala’s win will likely inspire a new generation of young Filipinos to pick up a racket, dream bigger, and believe that global stages like Wimbledon, Roland Garros, and the US Open are not out of reach.
A new era for Filipino tennis
Every so often, sport delivers a moment that feels like a turning point. For Philippine tennis, Alex Eala’s breakthrough in New York may be just that. The tears she shed after match point were not just the release of personal emotion but a reflection of what the victory means for her country.

Former US Open champion Novak Djokovic kick-started his campaign on Sunday (Aug 24) as he got the better of American teenager Learner Tien. Playing at the Arthur Ash Stadium, Djokovic dispatched Tien 6-1, 7-6(3), 6-2 to book his place in the second round and continue his pursuit of an unprecedented 25th major title. After the match, the Serb was quick to mention his hunger and stated that he still wants to compete and win big.
Djokovic hungry for more success
“At times I wish I was younger, but I can only be grateful for the amazing career I’ve had here in New York and worldwide. US Open 2025: Novak Djokovic hungry for more success, says 'I still want to compete'

The final stop in tennis’s Grand Slam calendar has always carried a unique energy. The US Open is not just about crowns and prize money — it is about endurance in the humid August heat, the roar of the Arthur Ashe night crowd, and the ability to withstand chaos in the city that never sleeps. The 2025 edition promises all of that and more. With defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka under pressure, young contenders ready to pounce, and veterans preparing their farewell tours, this year’s US Open looks set to deliver a fortnight of drama worthy of its history.
The Weight of Defending a Title
For Jannik Sinner, 2024 was the year he finally stepped out of the shadow of potential and claimed the biggest prize in New York. The Italian has since risen to world no. 1, bringing a new consistency to his powerful baseline game. But the challenge of defending in New York is always immense. Unlike Wimbledon or Roland Garros, where traditions run deep, the US Open thrives on unpredictability. For Sinner, the spotlight will be blinding — can he back up his dominance, or will Flushing Meadows remind him how fickle success can be? On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka faces a mountain even higher. No woman since Serena Williams’ three-peat from 2012 to 2014 has managed to defend a US Open title. The Belarusian is the reigning queen of Flushing Meadows, but history has a cruel way of humbling champions here. Her power game thrives on hard courts, yet she knows better than anyone that pressure, expectation, and the depth of the women’s field make back-to-back glory a near-impossible task. If the men’s field has a central storyline, it is the growing rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Their matches over the past year have been box-office events, filled with momentum shifts, dazzling shot-making, and the sense that tennis is witnessing its next great duel. Alcaraz, the 2022 US Open champion, relishes the energy of New York. For him, it is about reclaiming the crown and proving that Sinner’s rise has not left him behind. And then there is Novak Djokovic, the ageless titan. Each tournament could be his last real shot at a Slam, yet time and again he finds ways to remind the tennis world of his genius. Though younger rivals now often outlast him in grueling five-setters, Djokovic’s tactical mind and resilience make him a dangerous presence no one wants in their draw. Alexander Zverev continues to hunt for that elusive Slam breakthrough, while Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton carry the hopes of American men desperate to see a homegrown champion again. Frances Tiafoe, a semifinalist two years ago, remains the crowd’s favorite showman, capable of igniting Ashe Stadium on any given night. If the men’s side feels like a duel with supporting actors, the women’s tournament is an ensemble drama with multiple headliners. Iga Świątek enters the Open on a hot streak, having conquered Wimbledon and Cincinnati. Her ability to absorb pace and turn defense into attack makes her the most complete player in the world, and she could very well leave New York with both the trophy and the No. 1 ranking. But this is also the tournament of Coco Gauff. Two years removed from her 2023 breakthrough title, the American teenager returns home with the weight of expectation and the full support of the crowd. For Gauff, New York is not just about performance — it is about continuing her journey as the face of American tennis. Naomi Osaka, back on the Slam stage, is another wildcard. A two-time US Open champion, she has the pedigree and the comfort of playing in New York. If she finds her rhythm, she could easily derail higher-ranked players. Emma Raducanu, who shocked the world in 2021, still carries unpredictability — if her fitness holds, she remains one of the most dangerous unseeded players in the field. Beyond them, the women’s draw carries layers of history. Petra Kvitová and Caroline Garcia will bid farewell at this Slam, ensuring emotional nights as fans salute their careers. Venus Williams, making yet another appearance, enters as the oldest woman to contest a US Open singles draw in decades — her mere presence adds gravitas.
Farewells and Fresh Starts
The US Open has always been a place where eras end and new ones begin. Pete Sampras retired here. Serena Williams said goodbye here. In 2025, it could be the last hurrah for a few household names, while simultaneously becoming the launching pad for the next generation. American men like Shelton and Fritz are desperate to seize the moment, while the likes of Mirra Andreeva on the women’s side represent the youthful wave that is already crashing into the sport’s upper tier. The Open thrives on chaos — that unexpected run to the semifinals, that teenager who topples a champion, that night when a crowd decides to carry a player on its shoulders. And in 2025, with so many narratives colliding, the stage seems set for plenty of those moments.
What’s at Stake

For Sinner: A chance to prove that his No. 1 ranking is not just a number but a reign.

For Alcaraz: Redemption, and the reminder that he still belongs at the very top.

For Djokovic: Legacy — perhaps one last chapter in his storied career.

For Sabalenka: Breaking a decade-long curse and stamping herself as the game’s most dominant force.

For Swiątek: The opportunity to reclaim hard-court supremacy and the No. 1 throne.

For Gauff: The dream of a second US Open crown, this time as America’s established superstar.

For the veterans: A farewell under the Ashe lights, the kind of goodbye only New York can give.

The New York Factor
More than any other Slam, the US Open feeds off its setting. The late-night finishes, the raucous New York crowd, the swirling humidity — they shape champions and crush pretenders. It is the Slam where endurance meets entertainment, where athletes must not only beat their opponents but also embrace the stage. For players like Gauff, Tiafoe, and Osaka, the crowd can feel like a third weapon. For others, the noise and chaos become hurdles to overcome. Over two weeks, from August 24 to September 7, Flushing Meadows will once again become tennis’s epicenter. Every night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium promises storylines, from Sinner’s march to Sabalenka’s defense, from Alcaraz’s hunger to Swiątek’s dominance, from emotional farewells to shocking breakthroughs. The US Open has always been the Slam of surprises. Yet one thing is certain in 2025: with legacies at stake, rivalries peaking, and a city that thrives on drama, this year’s edition will demand nothing less than greatness.

The US Open 2025 is scheduled to start from Sunday (August 24). Ben Shelton will play his first match against Ignacio Buse, while Emma Raducanu will face Ena Shibahara in first round

When Aryna Sabalenka walks out on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows, she carries not just the burden of defending a title but also the weight of a peculiar curse. Since Serena Williams’ last successful defense in 2014, no woman has managed to win back-to-back US Open title. Every champion since—whether it was Angelique Kerber, Naomi Osaka, Emma Raducanu, or Sloane Stephens—has stumbled the following year, unable to cope with the dual pressures of expectation and a relentlessly competitive field. That makes Sabalenka’s mission unique. The defending champion tag brings with it a spotlight that can magnify every weakness. Rivals study you harder, the media narrative hovers over every match, and the crowd waits to see whether you can measure up to your own past. The Belarusian isn’t just playing opponents—she’s playing against history, against fatigue, and against the whispers that defending in New York is nearly impossible. What makes the US Open especially unforgiving is its atmosphere. The noise, the late-night battles under floodlights, and the unpredictable rhythm of New York all test a player’s resilience. Many champions have struggled to reset after reaching the summit here. Osaka, for instance, won in 2018 and 2020 but fell prey to inconsistency and emotional struggles soon after. Stephens, the 2017 champion, could not maintain her momentum. Raducanu, whose fairytale 2021 run electrified tennis, has since battled injuries and dips in form. Defending this title requires not just talent but an ability to thrive under chaos—something Sabalenka is still sculpting into her game.
From Frustration to Opportunity
For Sabalenka, 2025 has been a season of almosts. She reached finals, contested semifinals, but missed the catharsis of major victories. Each loss was a reminder of both her potential and her volatility. Earlier in her career, such near-misses might have derailed her, feeding doubts and frustrations. This year, however, her approach feels different. She has spoken about the importance of mental resets, skipped tournaments to prioritize recovery, and leaned on performance data to understand her body’s needs better. This maturity could be her sharpest weapon in New York. At her best, Sabalenka’s power game is overwhelming. Her first serve is one of the most destructive in women’s tennis, her groundstrokes flatten out rallies, and when confidence flows, she bulldozes opponents. The question has always been whether she can balance that aggression with composure when matches tighten. Her journey this season suggests she has been working toward that balance deliberately. But the field is fierce. Iga Swiatek, fresh from reclaiming dominance at Wimbledon and Cincinnati, remains the most consistent force in women’s tennis. Coco Gauff, last year’s finalist, will have the full backing of the home crowd. Behind them is a younger generation—Mirra Andreeva, Victoria Mboko, Amanda Anisimova—eager to announce themselves on the biggest stage. The margin for error is razor thin, and Sabalenka will need to channel frustration into fuel, especially if she faces a high-stakes clash against one of these hungry challengers.
What Is Really at Stake?
The US Open represents more than just a trophy for Sabalenka. It’s her chance to reshape the story of her season. So far, 2025 has been about what she almost achieved. New York offers her one final, defining opportunity to turn those near-misses into a lasting legacy. Winning here would silence questions about her consistency, solidify her hold on the No. 1 ranking, and mark her out as a champion who can sustain excellence—not just taste it in flashes. Defending a Slam is one of the hardest tasks in tennis. It’s about proving that your first triumph was not the peak but the beginning of an era. Sabalenka’s quest mirrors that of many before her who faltered under this challenge. If she succeeds, she will do more than break a decade-long jinx; she will position herself alongside the greats who redefined eras through consistency. Yet even if she falls short, how she fights in New York will set the tone for her future. Another early exit could fuel doubts about whether she can convert talent into dynasty. A deep run, even without the title, would still underline her resilience and readiness to keep pushing boundaries. For now, the mission is clear. Aryna Sabalenka has the power, the ranking, and the experience. What remains to be seen is whether she can stitch it all together under the bright lights of Flushing Meadows. If she does, this US Open won’t just be a defense—it will be a statement.

Former tennis world number one Novak Djokovic says the expansion of most ATP Masters 1000 events to 12 days makes them "just way too long for me" as he focuses on his pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam title. "To be quite frank with you, I don't enjoy the two-week Masters events anymore," Djokovic said Friday as he spoke to reporters before the Sunday start of the US Open -- the last Grand Slam of 2025. "It's just way too long for me. My focus is mostly on the Slams, and I have said that before. "But I also like other tournaments. Novak Djokovic, long an advocate for player input in matters such as scheduling and player compensation, said he does not see how the Masters 1000s -- which shifted this year from one-week to 12-days -- could go back to the previous format.

Novak Djokovic narrows focus in pursuit of 25th Grand Slam ahead of US Open 2025

Emma Raducanu returns to Flushing Meadows with a sense of deja vu, but the stakes are very different. Back in 2021, she was the teenager who shocked the sport by winning the US Open as a qualifier, producing one of the most improbable Slam runs in modern tennis. Four years later, she arrives in New York not as a reigning champion or headline act, but as a player looking to rebuild her career brick by brick. The question is no longer whether she can repeat her fairytale—it’s whether she can reinvent herself.
The Blessing and the Curse of 2021
Raducanu’s maiden Slam win came with the euphoria of triumph but also the baggage of expectation. She was thrust into a spotlight few 18-year-olds could handle: multimillion-dollar sponsorships, constant scrutiny, and the burden of being Britain’s next superstar. The narrative quickly shifted from celebration to skepticism when she struggled to back up her breakthrough. Her game—fluid, attacking, instinctive—was suddenly micro-analyzed. Every defeat was treated as a crisis, every coaching change as a sign of instability. Injuries, most significantly her recurring wrist and ankle problems, kept her off the tour for extended spells. In hindsight, her 2021 US Open feels both like a once-in-a-generation triumph and a poisoned chalice.
The Injuries and the Reset
The past 18 months have been brutal. Surgeries on both wrists and an ankle meant Raducanu effectively pressed the reset button on her career. For a player whose movement and timing are central to her game, the layoffs disrupted rhythm, match fitness, and confidence. Yet, paradoxically, this enforced break may have given her something she lacked post-2021: perspective. Stripped of ranking points and spotlight, she’s been allowed to work on her body, her mindset, and the fundamentals of her game without the crushing weight of public expectation.
A Lower Base, A Clearer Mind
Unlike her peers, Raducanu enters this US Open without the suffocating pressure of defending big points. Her ranking has dipped outside the top 100, meaning she comes in as an underdog rather than a headliner. That shift in perception could be liberating. For the first time since her breakthrough, she has space to be judged not by past glories but by present progress. Every match won feels like a step forward, not a standard she must replicate. This is Raducanu 2.0: not the teenage sensation of 2021, but a player in transition, learning to build a sustainable career rather than chase lightning in a bottle. Technically, Raducanu’s baseline aggression, clean ball-striking, and court intelligence remain undimmed. What’s been missing is continuity—stringing together matches and tournaments without interruption. Her recent outings show flashes: the forehand winners, the fearless returns, the ability to disrupt opponents’ rhythm. But Raducanu 2.0 isn’t about fireworks. It’s about grit, endurance, and redefining what success looks like. Making the second week in New York, or simply playing without physical setbacks, would be victories in themselves. The narrative around Raducanu now has less to do with Grand Slam titles and more with credibility. Can she establish herself as a regular force on tour, competing week in, week out? Can she stay healthy long enough to let her tennis evolve naturally? The endorsements, the spotlight, the media frenzy—they will always follow her. But if Raducanu 2.0 is to succeed, she must carve out a new identity: not as the prodigy who shocked the world once, but as a professional capable of building longevity in a ruthless sport. In many ways, this US Open is less a continuation of Raducanu’s story than a fresh start. The Emma Raducanu of 2021 was a dreamer who caught lightning in a bottle. The Emma Raducanu of 2025 is a fighter, reshaping her game, her body, and her narrative. Raducanu 2.0 doesn’t need to win the title. She needs to show that she can play, compete, and grow without the burden of her past weighing her down. And in doing so, she may just set the stage for a more sustainable, more authentic version of success.
