In the one-of-a-kind cross talk extravaganza, Donald Trump dusted off a series of falsehoods, & Joe Biden (when he was allowed to speak uninterrupted) floated some inaccuracies too. WION brings you a detailed report on the CLAIMS & the FACTS

US Election 2020: Series of falsehoods & inaccuracies

The US President Donald Trump missed the opportunity to condemn the actions by White supremacists groups during the first presidential debate that took place in Ohio on September 29.

When the debate moderator Chris Wallace asked Trump if he was willing to call out and reject the various racist and militia groups, such as Proud Bys, he tried to deflect the question.

However, when pressed upon the subject, Trump said 'Give me a name and I will say it', and then called out to Proud Boys and said, "Proud Boys -- stand back and stand by."

He quickly tried to jump from the subject by blaming all chaotic situations on the left-wing movement Antifa. "But I'll tell you what, I'll tell you what, somebody's got to do something about Antifa," he said.

The statement garned a lot of criticism on various social media platforms.

An American journalist published a screenshot of several posts of the members of the 'Proud Boys' group on various social media platforms in which they can be seen rejoicing in the fact that only were they mentioned in the debate, but were also sent a message by the President and claimed to be "ready".

Earlier, The New York Times published an article on Sunday claiming that Trump paid $750 each for 2016 as well as 2017 and that he paid no income taxes at all in ten of the previous 15 years. The president dismissed the claims as another piece of "fake news" in a series of tweets, adding that he was entitled to depreciation and tax credits like everyone else.

Biden's tax records showed he and his wife, Jill Biden, collectively earned $517,334 in 2019 and paid $346,204, while receiving a refund of $46,858.

US elections 2020: Trump says paid 'millions of dollars' in income tax

During the first Presidential Debate for the upcoming US elections 2020, the US President Donald Trump and his opponent Joe Biden took to the stage for a face-off.

While talking about the novel coronavirus, Trump was seen boasting about the huge turnout at his election campaigns. Talking about how 'Sleepy Joe' was always conducting online campaigns, Trump even took a hit at Joe Biden laughing "nobody would come".

Trump said he went ahead and conducted the campaigns in open-air, mainly near or at the airports where he says, "thousands of people turn up within 24 hours notice".

He was seen boasting about how thousands of people turn up at his election campaigns, but failed to address the lack of social distancing and masks.

He also mocked Joe Biden for wearing masks. To this, Biden recalled the incident when a journalist approached Trump and he took a step back asking 'Have you been tested?' claiming that Trump only cares about himself, and nobody else.

'You graduated lowest of your class'

The two also participated in bitter banter where Biden called Trump to be not that smart, to which the President replied "There's nothing smart about you" because "you graduated the lowest of your class".

"Don't ever use the word smart with me. Don't ever use that word with me. There's nothing smart about you, Joe," Trump said.

The two leaders did not also shake hands at the beginning of the debate. While the primary reason behind the same can be the fear of contracting coronavirus, it also pointed towards the bitterness between the two leaders.

The first Presidential Debate that took place in Ohio on September 29 was one of the few times that the country saw such a heated debate between the two candidates.

Biden continued accusing Trump of lying to everyone, and only caring about himself, and nobody else.

"The fact is that everything he is saying so far is simply a lie. I'm not here to call out his lies. Everybody knows he's a liar," Biden said.

Trump, predictably, denied these accusations claiming to have never lied to the people of the US.

The Dmeocratic opponent, while talking about how Trump has been lying to the nation, especially related to the novel coronavirus, called Trump to be 'not very smart'.

Trump slammed back at Biden by saying "There's nothing smart about you, Joe. Forty-seven years, you've done nothing."

When the frontrunner Biden was constantly being interrupted by Trump, Biden snapped and said, "It's hard to get a word in with this clown." This is probably the first time such a remark has been passed in the Presidential debate.

US presidential debates 2020 - The United States presidential election is inching closer every minute, and the fierce battle between incumbent Republican Donald Trump and the Democrat rival Joe Biden is picking up pace.

Recently, Trump demanded a drug test from “sleepy Joe Biden”, claiming there is no other explanation for Biden to appear the way he does at all events. Naturally, Trump also offered to get himself tested for any drug consumption. But, it looks like none of that is on the cards.

US presidential debates: "No drug tests" No drug tests have been conducted or will be conducted before the first debate between the two leaders kicks off on Tuesday. Additionally, no handshakes will be permitted, and the candidates will directly dive into the debate. On Monday, Trump claimed that Biden has refused to undergo drug testing. “Joe Biden just announced that he will not agree to a drug test,” Trump had tweeted. He topped with a classic Trump remark - “Gee! I wonder why?” Also read: US elections 2020: Biden compares Trump to Nazi Goebbels; ready for personal attacks A lot of the Trump campaigning has surrounded Joe Biden’s alleged drug consumption. Trump has repeatedly touted Biden as physically and mentally unfit for the presidency. Trump’s allies have also claimed that Biden is performing well because of performance enhancing drugs. “He’s almost - no. I have no comment,” Biden had said while referring to the viability of a drug test. In fact, Biden’s official campaign told Politico, “If the president thinks his best case is made in urine, he can have at it.” The debate is set to be moderated by Fox News’ Chris Wallace. Handshakes? Drug tests? What to expect from the first round of US presidential debates

In less than 10 hours from now, the biggest event in the election calendar will take place with the US presidential debates set to kick off.

US President Donald Trump will come face-to-face with Democratic nominee and former vice-president Joe Biden in Cleveland, Ohio. There will be six segments of approximately 15 minutes each and the moderator will open each segment with a question.

Trump and Biden will have two minutes each to respond. They will also be allowed to rebut each other.

The six segments include Trump and Biden's records, the Supreme Court, Wuhan virus pandemic, US economy, race and violence in US cities and the integrity of the US presidential elections. The segments may change in case of a big news development.

Fox News host Chris Wallace will be the moderator of the first presidential debate. Wallace has said that he won't fact-check Trump or Biden given the president's love for alternative facts it will be interesting to see if Biden spends his time fact-checking the president or whether he will use it to put forward his argument.

Another thing to look out for will be the impact of Trump's tax report. Reports claim that the US president has not been paying his taxes for years.

The presidential debates are an old tradition in the US and have been happening for decades.

A Google search will tell you that the first televised presidential debate was held in 1960 between Democratic nominee John F. Kennedy and Republican vice president Richard Nixon. However, the first televised debate was held four years earlier in 1956 as Democratic candidate Adlai Stevenson challenged incumbent Republican president Dwight Eisenhower but the men did not appear for debates, their representatives did!

Former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt represented the Democrats, she was taken on by Republican Senator Margaret Chase Smith. So technically, the first televised "presidential" debate featured two women. What happened over the next four years was very interesting as the candidates were new to television camera, Kennedy knew how to use the camera to engage his voters. He looked straight into the lens, Nixon, on the other hand, kept looking from one side to another as he addressed the reporters in the studio instead of addressing the voters.

So, Kennedy ended up looking confident and Nixon seemed disinterested. It did not help that Nixon also looked shifty and sweaty, the vice president was recovering from a hospital visit and had reportedly refused to wear make-up to the debate. The result was Nixon looked very sick on-air and went on to lose the election. The debates went on to become a case study on the importance of body language - television dos and don ts and the role of charisma in the US elections.

However, there's no proof that these debates influence election results. Former President Barack Obama did not have a great debate season against Mitt Romney in 2012, but Obama sealed his re-election anyway as personal insults dominated Hillary Clinton and Trump's 2016 debates, Clinton spoke about Trump's sexually aggressive remarks on women but that did not stop Trump from winning the election.

This year's debates mark the 60th anniversary of the Kennedy-Nixon debates but 2020 is a little different, courtesy the Wuhan virus. A large portion of the US electorate is voting early either in-person or in mail. Many of them would have voted before the third debate. So, if at all, the debates have the potential of swinging votes, the first and the second one will be the game-changers.

Trump-Biden first TV debate may prove to be a gamechanger in US elections

President Donald Trump's campaign is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on lawyers to litigate voting by mail, including in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, Federal Election Commission (FEC) data showed.

The campaign paid more than $250,000 to Porter Wright Morris & Arthur, the law firm representing it in lawsuits over the use of drop boxes and other changes to Pennsylvania's mail-balloting procedures, according to the data.

In the Nov. 3 elections, more voters are expected to cast their ballots by mail instead of in person because of the novel coronavirus pandemic but Republican Trump has repeatedly linked mail-in voting to voter fraud without providing evidence.

More than 200 election-related lawsuits have been filed, many of them focusing on mail-in ballots, which Democrats are more likely to use, according to some opinion polls.

Porter Wright did not respond to requests for comment. Trump campaign spokeswoman Thea McDonald declined to comment.

The Trump campaign in August paid out over $980,000 for legal services that month compared to about $332,000 in July, FEC data showed. It has spent over $3.9 million on legal services between March, when Biden began to emerge as the leading Democratic presidential contender, and August, according to the data.

Democratic candidate Joe Biden's campaign by comparison spent about $660,000 on legal services during that period, the data showed. Nearly $472,000, went to the campaign's outside general counsel firm Covington & Burling, home to former Obama administration Attorney General Eric Holder.

Biden spokesman Michael Gwin said in an email Tuesday that the campaign has "built a top notch legal team to support our campaign in critical ways, including through an unprecedentedly large voter protection effort focused on ensuring access to the ballot box."

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled on Sept. 17 that state officials could accept mail-in ballots up to three days after Nov. 3, as long as they were mailed by Election Day.

Porter Wright - which has most of its offices in election battleground states Pennsylvania, Florida and Ohio - was in August the Trump campaign's second-highest paid firm. The top paid firm was Jones Day, the campaign's outside general counsel.

Jones Day, which also has attorneys working on the Pennsylvania litigation, court records show, got nearly $350,000 in August - its biggest monthly payment from the Trump campaign this year, according to FEC data.

Jones Day did not respond to request for comment.

Reuters analyzed the campaign's spending on lawyers using reports submitted to the FEC on Sept. 20, which cover spending up to Aug. 31. Those reports do not include spending by political action committees.

The legal services funding data isn't broken down to show what litigation money was spent on, but it can be parsed by which law firm was paid, how much a firm received and when.

Porter Wright began receiving payments from the Trump campaign in June 2020, when it filed the Pittsburgh federal lawsuit. The Trump campaign paid the firm $25,000 in June and about $37,000 in July, FEC data shows.

Trump has declined to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses the election to Biden and has said he expects the election battle to end up before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Biden campaign has added top lawyers to its staff and established a "special litigation" team as it braces for potential legal fights. Those additions include former Obama administration attorneys and Marc Elias, a top elections lawyer at Perkins Coie, the Democratic Party's go-to law firm.

Covington spokesman David Schaefer confirmed the firm is serving as the Biden campaign's outside counsel but declined further comment.

Donald Trump wants drug test for Joe Biden before US presidential debates 2020

The US President Donald Trump has made it clear that for him election campaigning is more important than the novel coronavirus that has affected more than seven million lives in the US.

During one of his election campaign rally in Newport News, Virginia mocked his rival Joe Biden for doing the opposite of what Trump ignores — staying indoors.

Trump completed a packed three-state schedule within three hours, and during his last rally in Newport News mocked Joe Biden by passing a remark on him, "This guy never goes out. It's terrible huh?"

He further continued the joke by saying, "If I lose to a man who doesn't campaign... I don't know", which attracted fits of laughter and applause from his supporters.

The rallies that took place on Friday saw very less people wearing face masks, and none of the campaigns followed social distancing regulations set by the experts.

Biden had travelled from Delaware to Washington on Friday to attend a ceremony held in the honour of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The ceremony was held at the US Capitol and Biden was seen attending it to pay respects to the famous and inspirational RBG.

However, the Democratic nominee did not schedule any campaign for the day. Biden has been trying to arrange his election campaign rallies virtually to make sure the rallies do not contribute to the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Biden has accused Trump of mishandling the novel coronavirus for his personal gains. "Since President Trump's last visit to Florida just two weeks ago, over 40,000 more Floridians have tested positive for coronavirus and the state marked 13,000 Covid-related deaths," Biden said Thursday as Trump flew to a Jacksonville rally.

US elections 2020: Trump mocks Joe Biden for 'staying indoors'

A recent survey has revealed that there are several factors that makes US President Donald Trump closer to Indian-Americans than his Democratic rival Joe Biden.

US Election 2020: What are the choices that voters face in key states?

The crowds at election rallies are gaining strength. Doubts are being cast on the fairness of the election process. A fierce debate has ensued over the peaceful transition of power. And Donald Trump has reiterated his offer to mediate in India-China standoff.

Speaking to reporters outside White House earlier today, Trump delved into his nomination for the Nobel Prize and then switched to the ongoing India China face-off.

He said that two countries were having "substantial difficulty" and if America could help, it would love to help. Trump's own endless wars with China notwithstanding, he is convinced that he is the best person to negotiate peace.

The election battle has entered the final six-week stretch. Trump has upped the ante. He campaigned in two states in one day. He travelled to North Carolina and then to Florida. The rally venues were packed.

In his speech, Trump called Kamala Harris the 'furthest left' in the US Senate. And Joe Biden the 'lowest energy individual' he had ever seen.

"Supposing he never campaigns and he wins, you know how badly I'm going to feel. I'm working hard and you got to work hard. And you know what? I said it today. We cannot have a low-energy individual as our president. We can't. And he's the lowest energy individual I've ever seen...," said Trump.

"Kamala, you know, Kamala is further left than Bernie. I didn't know that. She is the furthest left in the U.S. Senate," he added.

Meanwhile, the transition of power after elections has become a subject of debate. Trump has refused a peaceful transition of power casting doubts on election process. but his fellow republicans do not support his stance. They think he is pushing it too far. This includes Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell. Republican Senator Marco Rubio, and Republican lawmaker Liz Cheney.

They all have reaffirmed their faith in the final results. They are promising a peaceful transition. The democrats have found new fodder.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi slammed Trump for disrespecting his oath to office. And she reminded him that he is not in North Korea.

"...I remind him that you are not in North Korea. You are not in Turkey. You are not in Russia, Mr President. And by the way, you are not in Saudi Arabia. You are in the United States of America. It is a democracy. So why don't you just... try for a moment to honour your oath of office," she said.

Speaking of the constitution, Donald Trump went to pay his repects to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the deceased Supreme Court judge. First lady Melania Trump accompanies him. Both of them had their faces covered in masks. As the couple emerged on the steps of the Supreme Court building, something unusual happened. The people who had gathered started shouting "Vote him out!"

From “black-ish” to a “West Wing” reunion, television shows are using the power of entertainment in new ways to encourage more Americans to participate in the Nov. 3 election.

Thirty years after “Rock the Vote,” a liberal nonprofit group, fused pop culture and politics, TV makers are seeking to make dry topics like registering to vote, filling out the census and finding polling places feel vital and fun by writing them into the plots of popular shows.

In “Black Ink Crew,” a reality show about a tattoo parlor in Harlem, the Black owner registers to vote for the first time and designs a tattoo to mark the occasion. The Cuban-American family comedy “One Day at a Time” ran an episode about a census worker who comes to their home.

“We’re seeing a reshaping of how Americans are encouraged to think about civics, not only through a 30-second PSA (public service announcement) but also through integrations into storylines on some of our major shows,” said Steven Levine, director of the Civic Alliance.

The Civic Alliance, launched in January, is supported by more than 180 companies including ViacomCBS Inc VIACA.O, Spotify SPOT.N, Univision and Hollywood's Creative Artists Agency (CAA).

Earlier this year, ViacomCBS rolled out a Civic Storylines Toolkit and organized workshops that have been attended by more than 200 writers across comedy, drama and reality shows.

The toolkit provides a road map on how to “infuse storylines around voting and voting culture directly into our content, instead of the more traditional approach of PSAs,” said Brianna Cayo Cotter, senior vice president of social impact at the ViacomCBS entertainment and youth group.

“Television can really shape the way people think and feel around major issues. But that philosophy had never been applied to civic engagement,” Cayo Cotter said.

Many of the shows are aimed at millennials and Gen Z, who together outnumber baby boomers for the first time in the U.S. electorate, according to a 2019 report by the Pew Research Center.

An upcoming episode of comedy “black-ish” will focus on first-time voter Junior, who discovers he has been dropped from voter lists and wants to find out why.

The main cast of White House drama “The West Wing,” which finished its run in 2006, is reuniting for a special episode aimed at promoting voting in November.

Actor Kal Penn, from stoner movie franchise “Harold and Kumar,” is launching comedy show “Kal Penn Approves This Message” on the youth-oriented Freeform channel that will tackle topics like healthcare and climate change as well as information about how and where to vote.

“It’s very important for the show to be funny and non-partisan,” said Penn. “Younger people tend to not be affiliated with a political party the way older audiences are. They tend to care more about issues,” he said.

The initiatives are already yielding results. Appeals by Trevor Noah on “The Daily Show” have resulted in more than 100,000 people signing up to be poll workers through dedicated links on the show’s website, ViacomCBS said.

Trump refuses to commit on peaceful transition of power after US elections

Facebook, already under fire for its handling of misinformation and fake news, is going to launch its independent Oversight Board in mid to late October. This will put the board in action just before US Presidential elections due to take place on November 3. Facebook had plans to launch the Oversight Board last year but it was delayed due to coronavirus pandemic.

The board will initially have the power to review decisions to take down posts from Facebook and Instagram and recommend policy changes.

Oversight Board member Alan Rusbridger told Reuters in an interview that the board was now aiming for an October launch. A spokesman confirmed that timetable, saying the launch, originally planned for last year, had also been slowed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Rusbridger said he did not know whether the board would hear cases about content connected to the U.S. presidential election.

Although this is a step towards improving Facebook's handling of problematic content, some experts have said that that it will not be able to help combat misinformation as the board won't have authority to evaluate posts that the company decides to leave up.

Facebook has been on the receiving end of criticism about the kind of content it allows on its platform, especially political and social.

In addition to concerns surrounding content, Facebook is facing flak for privacy issues as well. On September 18, Bloomberg reported that a lawsuit was filed against Facebook for allegedly spying on Instagram users through phone camera. Facebook owns Instagram. Facebook had declined to comment at the time.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray told US Congress that Russia was interfering in US Presidential Elections and was releasing steady stream of misinformation that aimed Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden. He said that Russia was even making efforts to diminish Americans' confidence in the election process.

He said his biggest concern is a "steady drumbeat of misinformation" that he said he feared could undermine confidence in the result of the 2020 election.

Multiple reviews by US intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia acted to boost now-President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and undermine his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. The Republican president has long bristled at that finding, which Russia denies.

Regarding China, Wray said that the FBI is so active in monitoring Chinese efforts to acquire U.S. technology and other sensitive information that it is opening a new counterintelligence investigation related to China "every 10 hours."

Wray said the FBI is conducting multiple investigations into violent domestic extremists following months of street protests against racism and police brutality. He said the largest "chunk" of investigations were into white supremacist groups.

On Thursday Trump wrote on Twitter, without evidence, that they could make it impossible to know the election's true outcome.

Multiple reviews by US intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia acted to boost now-President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and undermine his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. The Republican president has long bristled at that finding, which Russia denies. Regarding China, Wray said that the FBI is so active in monitoring Chinese efforts to acquire U.S. technology and other sensitive information that it is opening a new counterintelligence investigation related to China "every 10 hours." Wray said the FBI is conducting multiple investigations into violent domestic extremists following months of street protests against racism and police brutality. He said the largest "chunk" of investigations were into white supremacist groups. Russia interfering in US elections, targeting Joe Biden: FBI

We are just 46 days away from the voting day for US Presidential elections. There is a new controversy each day and both sides are making new promises to win public sentiments.

A promise is being made to deliver coronavirus vaccine as soon as possible. The vaccine has taken centre stage in the race to the White House.

However, Donald Trump and Joe Biden seem to have very little to offer. Trump has unveiled the largest, fastest and most advanced vaccine distribution plan in American History. Under this plan, Trump administration is promising to swiftly deliver the vaccine to all Americans free of cost. Trump is saying that the vaccine will be available in a matter of weeks.

"We're on track to deliver and distribute the vaccine in a very, very safe and effective manner. We think we can start sometime in October. So as soon as it is announced, we'll be able to start. That will be from mid-October on, may be a little bit later than that, but we'll be all set," said Trump

However, just hours before Donald Trump unveiled this plan, Director of US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention Robert Redfield testified before a US Congress panel and said that a vaccine won't be available to American public before second and third quarter of 2021.

"I think there will be a vaccine that will initially be available sometime between November and December, but very limited supply and we'll have to be prioritized. If you're asking me when is it going to be generally available to the American public, so we can begin to take advantage of the vaccine to get back to our regular life? I think we're probably looking at third, late second quarter, third quarter 2021," he said.

But Trump said Redfield made a mistake when he said that

"No. I think he made a mistake when he said that. It's just incorrect information. And I called him and he didn't tell me that. And I think he got the message may be confused. Maybe it was stated incorrectly, said Trump.

There's no telling what is the real situation. But let's hope that vaccine Trump is promising to deliver next month is not that disinfectant which he once promoted as a remedy for the Wuhan virus.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden has had a lot of complaints against Donald Trump. He says he is fed up with the President's inaction.

Biden wants Trump to take responsibility and come up with a real plan to combat the virus.

"All the President had to offer last night, President Trump, was the same weak and feckless inaction, the same lies and empty promises that we've seen from the very beginning. He still won't accept any responsibility. He still won't offer a plan. And last night he repeated what he's said so many times before - that even if he continues to offer only failing indifference, someday the virus is going to go away by a miracle. Even if he does nothing, it's going to go away by a miracle. It won't go away by a miracle," he said.

Biden has a lot to say about Trump's failures. But just like Trump he has no solutions to offer.

Both Biden and Trump are trying to woo voters across communities. They're eyeing the Hispanic voters as well.

Earlier this week, Trump bragged about a non-existent award that he apparently received from Cuban-Americans

Joe Biden tried courting Hispanic voters by talking about the 'divisive immigration policies' of Trump.

And he stated his address by playing Despacito, the hit Latino song from 2017.

US Elections can really be likened to a reality show. The President is refuting health experts in public, the opponent is dancing to Despacito. Truly there is no dearth of entertainment in the race to White House.
