As the US inches closer to the day of voting, climate change is increasingly becoming a hot topic for debates. There are wildfires raging through California, Oregon and the state of Washington, moulding the narrative of presidential campaigns.

4.5 million acres of land has burnt since August, 6,200 homes and structures have been destroyed, and 3 million more homes are at risk of being ravaged. 36 people have died so far. And 64,000 people have been forced to evacuate. Additionally, the air quality has worsened.

Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump have laid out their vision to tackle this natural disaster.

Donald Trump

Donald Trump has never really been a believer in climate change, and has often called it a hoax. But he landed in Sacramento, California for a briefing about the wildfires, where officials from other political backgrounds were also present. This included Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, and Wade Crowfoot, the Secretary of California’s natural resources agency.

The two men urged Trump to understand the science behind these wildfires.

“If we ignore that science and sort of put our head in the sand and think it's all about vegetation management, we're not going to succeed together protecting Californians”, Crowfoot said.

“It'll start getting cooler. You just watch”, Trump then said.

Crowfoot went on to say, "I wish science agreed with you." Trump fired back with “I don't think science knows”.

Trump had also earlier claimed that COVID-19 would disappear as months get hotter. He is now hopeful that the fires will disappear when things start getting cooler.

Joe Biden

Joe Biden thinks Donald Trump is the one setting these fires. Speaking in Delaware, Biden called Trump a "climate arsonist".

“If you give a climate arsonist four more years in the white house, why would anyone be surprised if we have more of America ablaze? If you give a climate denier four more years in the White House, why would anyone be surprised when more of America is underwater? We need a president who respects science, who understands that the damage from climate change is already here. Unless we take urgent action, it will soon be more catastrophic”, Biden said.

The Democratic Party says this bug has been fixed, but questions are being raised on whether this bug was intentionally placed.

Campaigning woes

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign too is struggling with a fair share of controversies. The latest one is gaining mileage through a hashtag.

US Election 2020: Where do Trump and Biden stand on climate change?

US presidential elections are inching closer, and Joe Biden and Donald Trump are headed for a fierce competition.

Social media and technology play a huge role in any modern elections, and the same holds true for the upcoming US elections.

"Vote Joe"

However, technology has its own set of loopholes. For instance, The Democratic Party’s prime candidate Joe Biden runs an official campaigning smartphone application. Much to everyone’s dismay, the application reportedly gave access to sensitive voter information on millions of Americans, a security researcher recently found. “Vote Joe”, the official name of the app, gives a platform to Biden supporters to garner more support for him among friends and family, and to encourage others to vote in the upcoming elections.

As part of this process, users are required to upload the details of contacts on their phone to check whether they are registered to vote. Based on data from the user’s phone, the application cross-checks voter data to ascertain whether one is set to vote this year.

The data is supplied by TargetSmart, a political marketing firm which has files on over 191 million Americans. Once matched, the app displays details of the voter, including name, age, and birthday. It also informs the user of which election the searched party last voted in.

According to the app, this helps “users find people you know and encourage them to get involved”. Even though a lot of this data is publicly accessible, the bug in the application enabled anyone to easily access voter information.

Personal details divulged

This was discovered by The App Analyst, a mobile expert who divulged the details of his findings on his blog.

The expert found that the app can be easily manipulated by creating a contact on one’s phone with any voter’s name. Following this, one could access all the details available on the person.

In conversation with TechCrunch, the expert claimed that the application also pulls in a lot more data than it claims to. The application reportedly saves voter’s home address, gender, date of birth, political party affiliation, and ethnicity.

The bug, though, has been fixed and an update was released on Friday.

“We were made aware about how our third-party app developer was providing additional fields of information from commercially available data that was not needed,” Biden campaign’s spokesperson Matt Hill told TechCrunch.

“We worked with our vendor quickly to fix the issue and remove the information. We are committed to protecting the privacy of our staff, volunteers and supporters will always work with our vendors to do so”, he added.

Hill also disputed the claim that the app was giving out private information.

TargetSmart, the firm behind data management of voters claimed that only a “limited amount of publicly or commercially available data” could have been accessed by voters.

In the US, another book bomb has struck the Trump campaign. There are new allegations of election interference. And a race to secure Nobel Prize seems to have overshadowed the presidential race.

Bob Woodward, a veteran journalist, has written a tell-all book on the US President. It's titled 'Rage'. It will release next week.

Some excerpts are out.

This one is about the murder of Saudi Arabian dissident Jamal Khashoggi and Donald Trump's role in proving that the Saudi crown prince was innocent.

According to the author, Donald Trump often bragged about the way he protected Mohammed Bin Salman after Khashoggi's assassination.

The book claims that Trump boasted about how he was able to get the US Congress to leave Mohammed Bin Salman alone.

We all remember that CIA had concluded that Mohammed Bin Salman had personally ordered Khashoggi's assassination.

Woodward's book says that Trump did not think so and that he used executive power to block congressional efforts to cut ties with Riyadh.

We don't know how true these claims are.

But they have provided enough fodder for the democrats to sustain their attacks on Donald Trump.

Then there's talk about election hacking.

Tech-giant Microsoft has warned that hackers with ties to Russia, China and Iran are trying to interfere in the presidential race.

But there are no favorites this time.

According to Microsoft both, Republicans and Democrats are apparently on target. According to Tim Burt, the Vice-President of Microsoft, most of the infiltration attempts in recent months have been halted by the company's secure software.

However, he has refused to comment on who may have been successfully hacked or impacted.

Russia and China have dismissed the allegations like always. Iran has not even cared to respond.

On our third big development for the day. And this is huge.

Donald Trump has been nominated for the Nobel

A Norwegian lawmaker has nominated Trump for 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. Name of the lawmaker is Christian Tybring Gjedde

He is the same man who nominated Trump for the same prize in 2019 for restoring ties with North Korea.

What's his reason this time?

"I nominated President Trump because he made a great achievement by facilitating the peace agreement between Israel and the UAE, and he set an example for the development in the Middle East and, hopefully, that will have an effect that other nations will join the peace agreements and be a part of it and to normalise the relationship between Israel and the Middle East and more countries in the Middle East," he said.

Trump is going to town bragging about Israel-UAE peace deal. It is a sort of a big thing.

But he is upset that the American media is not covering the news enough.

"I don't say this out of ego, but I was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Now, I have to tell you, that's sort of a big thing. And the networks and most of the news didn't cover it. Can you imagine when Obama came to office, they said, we're going to give him the Nobel Peace Prize? He actually said, what did I do? I didn't do anything. He didn't do anything for eight years, frankly. But he said, what did I do? They gave it to him in a matter of weeks. Right. Weeks. And with us, we've done so much with, we have done so much on so many different fronts. Remember North Korea? Remember, they were going to be at war with North Korea. Where's the war? Where's the war? Where's the war?" said Donald Trump.

Well, Mr President has a point. But we are not sure which prize does the President want.

January 20, 2021: Inauguration Day. The winner and his running mate are sworn in as president and vice president at the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

Facebook Inc has decided to conduct a study on its impact on the society during the US Presidential elections scheduled on November 03 this year.

The social media giant will be partnering with external researchers for this study, and is expecting to publish the research by the middle of 2021.

The study will be conducted by a group of 17 independent researchers specialising in elections, democracy and social media. The group will comprise of leading academicians who study political impacts of social media.

The study will be an addition to Facebook's Social Science One project. Facebook is estimating participation between 200,000 and 400,000.

The researchers will be provided data of what these participants see, like and post on Facebook and Instagram related to the US elections. This will help study the behaviour and any change in behavioural pattern of the participants during the course of the US Presidential elections.

The researchers will be provided internal data and the assistance of Facebook's data scientists to conduct this research. However, the data provided will be aggravated to protect the privacy of the users participating.

During the course of the research, Facebook will be bringing in specific changes for the targeted audience, such as advertising or types of posts shown to them.

The study will be under close observation, especially after the social media giant has been accused of fake news reporting and misinformation campaigns during the 2016 presidential elections. Facebook has cleared the air by announcing that the researchers will not be restricted or paid for their findings — the cost of the resources used in the research will be borne by Facebook, though. However, the company has added that it is entitled to review the research results before it is published for the public eye.
