Ukraine on Tuesday (March 11) backed the US proposal for 30-day ceasefire in war with Russia. This comes after officials from Washington and Kyiv engaged in talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.&nbsp;
In turn, the US has lifted restrictions &nbsp;on military aid and intelligence sharing.&nbsp;
"Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the US proposal to enact an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties, and which is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian Federation," according to the joint statement.
The United States will immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine.
It added that the US will communicate to Russia that "Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace."
Both delegations agreed to name their negotiating teams and immediately begin negotiations toward an enduring peace that provides for Ukraine&rsquo;s long-term security.&nbsp;
<h2>'Minerals deal to conclude ASAP'</h2>
After holding talks in Jeddah, the two sides agreed to conclude "as soon as possible" a deal on Ukrainian minerals.&nbsp;
"Both countries&rsquo; presidents agreed to conclude as soon as possible a comprehensive agreement for developing Ukraine&rsquo;s critical mineral resources to expand Ukraine&rsquo;s economy, offset the cost of American assistance, and guarantee Ukraine&rsquo;s long-term prosperity and security," it added.&nbsp;
Earlier during the talks, a senior aide in Zelensky's presidential office stressed that work is in "progress", hinting that the Ukraine peace talks were going well, days after Trump-Zelensky's showdown at the White House.
Andriy Yermak, the most senior aide in Zelensky&rsquo;s presidential office, took to X, saying, "Work in progress."&nbsp;

US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning for Canada on Tuesday (March 11) over electricity surcharge in three US states, stressing that they will pay a "financial price" for this.
Canada's most populous province Ontario announced a 25 per cent surge in electricity export tariffs on Monday, for nearly 1.5 million Americans living in Minnesota, New York, and Michigan.&nbsp;
Trump in a social media post said, "Why would our Country allow another Country to supply us with electricity, even for a small area? Who made these decisions, and why?"

Earlier, Trump said in another post that he would shortly declare a 'National Emergency on Electricity' within the "threatened area", which he said would allow the United States to take responsive action to "alleviate this abusive threat" from Ottawa.
He also announced to double the tariff on all steel and aluminum imports from Canada, hiking it from 25 per cent to 50 per cent.
Calling Canada "one of the highest tariffing nations anywhere in the world," he said that the import duties will go into effect "tomorrow morning (Mar 12)".

In the summer of 2020, George Floyd's death in Minneapolis, US, after police brutality sparked nationwide outrage. In the aftermath, protesters marched with placards against intolerance and racial discrimination during President Donald Trump's first tenure. Tens of thousands of undeterred demonstrators fought against societal evil; that's when 'Black Lives Matter' was coined and became a movement.
In October 2021, Black Lives Matter Plaza was established at Lafayette Square of President's Park in Washington, DC - one block from the White House. It was looked at as a statement and a voice against injustice.
Now, after nearly four years, it is being brought down&mdash;during&nbsp;Trump's second term in office. After a crew razed the arena on Wednesday (Mar 5), DC Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a statement: "We have long considered Black Lives Matter Plaza's evolution, and the plaza will be part of DC's America 250 mural project, where we will invite students and artists to create new murals across all eight wards."

It further added, "The mural inspired millions of people and helped our city through a very painful period, but now we can't afford to be distracted by meaningless congressional interference. The devastating impacts of the federal job cuts must be our number one concern. Our focus is on economic growth, public safety, and supporting our residents affected by these cuts."
People are upset, and they look at it as a downgrade, more like going back to square one, making their fight against racial injustice insignificant.

President Donald Trump made it clear during his address at a joint session of Congress that he would work to protect the police force. He had said, "I've already signed an executive order requiring a mandatory death penalty for anyone who murders a police officer. Tonight, I'm asking Congress to pass that policy into permanent law."
"I am also asking for a new crime bill getting tough on repeat offenders while enhancing protection for America's police officers so they can do their jobs without fear of their lives being destroyed. We are not going to let them be killed," he added.

One block from White House, Black Lives Matter Plaza 'dismantled'

Greenland voted Tuesday in legislative elections which could yield a timeline for independence for the Danish self-governing territory coveted by US President Donald Trump.
Trump, determined to get his hands on the vast Arctic island "one way or the other", tried until the last minute to influence the vote, sparking astonishment, rejection, and, to a small degree, enthusiasm among the 57,000 Greenlanders, most of whom favor independence.&nbsp;
After waiting in a long line with other voters, Greenland's outgoing Prime Minister Mute Egede -- who celebrated his 38th birthday on Tuesday -- cast his ballot shortly after polls opened at 9:00 am (1100 GMT).&nbsp;

"Our country is in the eye of the storm," he said in a video posted to Facebook just hours before the vote.
"The international community is watching us closely, and we have recently seen how much they are trying to influence our country," said Egede, leader of the left-green party Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA).
Polling stations close at 8:00 pm (2200 GMT) and first results are expected several hours later. &nbsp;
The lead-up of the election to choose the 31-seat parliament, the Inatsisartut, was mostly marked by debates on healthcare, education, and future ties with Denmark, which still controls foreign, defence and monetary policy.
Greenland's inhabitants -- almost 90 percent of whom are Inuits -- say they are tired of being treated like second-class citizens by their former colonial power, which they accuse of having historically suppressed their culture, carried out forced sterilisations and removed children from their families.
All of Greenland's main political parties back independence but disagree on the timeframe.

<h2>Independence now or later?&nbsp;</h2>
Some, such as the nationalist Naleraq party, the main opposition faction, want to seek independence quickly.
Others prefer to wait until the island is financially independent, including the two parties that make up the outgoing coalition, IA and social democratic Siumut.
The island, covered 80 percent by ice, depends on its fisheries sector, which accounts for almost all of its exports, and annual Danish subsidies of more than $565 million, equivalent to a fifth of its GDP.

The most impatient independence backers believe Greenland will soon be able to stand on its own thanks to untapped mineral reserves, including rare earths crucial to the green transition.&nbsp;
But the mining sector is still in its embryonic stages, hampered by high costs due to Greenland's harsh climate and lack of infrastructure.
"We are about to make a huge change towards Greenland's independence and the fight for who we are as Inuit," influencer Qupanuk Olsen, a mining engineer standing for the Naleraq party, told AFP before she cast her ballot.

<h2>More polarisation&nbsp;</h2>
Trump floated the idea of buying Greenland during his first mandate, a bid swiftly rejected by Danish and Greenlandic authorities.
Back in the White House, he has circled back on the ambition with greater fervour, refusing to rule out the use of force and invoking US national security.
Late Sunday, Trump invited Greenlanders "to be a part of the Greatest Nation anywhere in the World, the United States of America", promising to make them "rich".
The most recent polling on the issue, published in January, shows 85 percent of Greenlanders are opposed to Trump's idea.
"I've had enough of his empty threats," Anders Martinsen, a 27-year-old tax service employee, told AFP.
"There are a lot of Greenlanders who see the US differently with Trump as president, who are a little less inclined to cooperate even if that's what they would really want to do," he said.
"They can't own us," insisted Aka-Mark Thor-Moller, a 28-year-old accountant.&nbsp;
He said Greenland should seek independence "as soon as possible but not right now. We have to plan our economic development first."
The statements by Trump -- whom Prime Minister Egede has described as "unpredictable" -- sent a jolt through the election campaign.
Naleraq's nationalists say his remarks have given them leverage ahead of independence negotiations with Denmark.
But the comments have also chilled some independence supporters, making continued ties with Copenhagen more attractive to them, at least for now.&nbsp;
"Staying with Denmark is more important than ever right now because I think Denmark has mostly been good to us," said one voter who identified himself only as Ittukusuk.
"If we become independent, then Trump might get too aggressive and that's what scares me."
Political analysts say Trump's meddling in the election contributed to a more polarised debate by reinforcing each side's convictions, but overall it was not expected to influence the result.

Recession fears in the US are reflecting in Wall Street's meltdown since last week, with the selloff extending to Asian markets. Wall Street saw a deep selloff overnight, marking its worst drop since September 2022. The selloff was fueled by investor fears over mounting trade tensions and recession risks. This comes as President Donald Trump refused to rule out an economic downturn.

Imagine a scenario where Europe’s skies are patrolled by advanced fighter jets, sleek, powerful, and ready to defend the continent’s sovereignty. Yet, with a single command from the Pentagon, these very aircraft could be rendered inoperative, grounded not by enemy action, but by the decisions of an ally. This unsettling possibility stems from Europe’s heavy reliance on American-made military hardware, particularly the F-35 and F-16 fighter jets.

Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has urged leaders to &ldquo;not give in to bullies&rdquo; following a scathing social media post from US President Donald Trump.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform just before midnight on Sunday, and criticised Turnbull&rsquo;s leadership and his understanding of China.
&ldquo;Malcolm Turnbull, the former Prime Minister of Australia who was always leading that wonderful country from &lsquo;behind&rsquo; never understood what was going on in China, nor did he have the capacity to do so. I always thought he was a weak and ineffective leader and, obviously, Australian&rsquo;s agreed with me!!!,&rdquo; Trump wrote.

The comments appeared to be a response to an interview Turnbull gave to Bloomberg, in which he suggested that Trump&rsquo;s erratic leadership style was playing into China&rsquo;s hands.
&ldquo;President Xi will aim to be the exact opposite of Trump: where Trump is chaotic, he will be consistent. Where Trump is rude and abusive, he&rsquo;ll be respectful. Where Trump is erratic, he will be consistent,&rdquo; Turnbull said.
He warned that the world was now witnessing an &ldquo;undiluted&rdquo; version of Trump, arguing that his unpredictable nature made Chinese President Xi Jinping a more appealing partner for many nations.

&ldquo;For countries forced to choose between &lsquo;China on the one hand, and Trump on the other&rsquo;, many would &lsquo;find China a more attractive partner&rsquo;,&rdquo; Turnbull added.
<h2>Turnbull dismisses Trump&rsquo;s criticism</h2>
Following Trump&rsquo;s post, Turnbull told The Guardian that his Bloomberg comments &ldquo;speak for themselves.&rdquo;
&ldquo;His [Trump&rsquo;s] post proves that my comments hit the mark,&rdquo; he said.
During an interview on ABC&rsquo;s 7.30 with Sarah Ferguson on Monday night, Turnbull described Trump&rsquo;s remarks as &ldquo;rude and abusive&rdquo; and reiterated his belief that Trump&rsquo;s behaviour was pushing nations closer to China.

Trump and Turnbull have clashed before. In 2017, they had a tense phone call over a refugee resettlement deal brokered by Trump&rsquo;s predecessor, Barack Obama. Trump was highly critical of the agreement, saying accepting it would make him look like a &ldquo;dope.&rdquo;

Reports suggest that the U.S. has told its allies that it will not participate in any future military exercises in Europe. This is the latest move in Trump's effort to drift away from NATO and will see America out of drills beyond those already scheduled for 2025. The U.S. military is the largest in the NATO bloc. U.S. President Donald Trump has, on many occasions, criticized the bloc for not spending the current goal of 2% of GDP on defense, arguing that the disparity puts an unfair burden on the United States.
