As global economies show worrying signs of rising food prices, soaring gas prices and high inflation rates, oil super majors witness record-breaking profits. How? Well, the Russian invasion of Ukraine is driving these stunning profits for the oil giants.

WION Fineprint: Oil & gas price surge amid Ukraine war

As a result of the war in Ukraine and the drought in Canada, mustard seeds are in short supply in France. The few French consumers who have been able to find mustard in stores are paying a premium, since retail prices have increased by 14% this year.

Some French farmers want to take advantage of the chance to increase their domestic mustard seed production.

If not outrage, then at least a great deal of unease has been raised by the strange disappearance of mustard from store shelves in France.

Since losing the condiment that gives a steak frites edge, life to a grilled sausage, depth to a vinaigrette, and richness to mayonnaise, France has been searching for substitutes in quiet desperation.

The candidates now include shallots, horseradish, wasabi, Worcestershire sauce, and even creams of Roquefort.

Some people feel personally affected by the severe weather that destroyed the supply of mustard seeds in and outside of France, as well as by the supply chain disruptions brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, which are still having an impact today.

Calls to domestically produce mustard seeds are being made in response to the shortage in order to rely less on foreign suppliers.

According to reports, Russia has lost over 75,000 soldiers in the Ukraine war who have either been killed or have been injured.

A report in a British newspaper quoting classified US intelligence revealed that the casualty rate amounts to half of the number of troops which were initially committed to the war when President Vladimir Putin announced his "special military operation" against Ukraine on February 24.

The report said if the new classified casualty rates are true then the Ukraine war is the "worst ever war in terms of casualties" and the "second worst worldwide since World War-II" with only the Vietnam war being the biggest in which at least 350,000 US troops were killed. The report claimed the former Soviet Union suffered nearly 70,000 casualties in the Afghanistan war in the mid-80s.

Russia had decided to concentrate its forces in the eastern region after suffering reverses at the beginning of the war with its forces failing to capture Kyiv as Ukrainians put up a fierce defence.

However, the report added that casualty rates are highly speculative. The report comes just days after CIA Director William Burns estimated that nearly 15,000 Russian forces were killed and "maybe three times that wounded" adding that it was "quite significant set of losses". Burns informed that "Ukrainians have suffered as well" saying that it was "probably a little less than that".

Last month Ukraine said 100 to 200 troops were being killed per day. Burns said Russia has "retreated" to a "more comfortable way of war" by using "long-range firepower to stand off and effectively destroy Ukrainian targets" in order to "compensate for the weaknesses in manpower".

Russia is planning to hold big military exercise in the east thousands of miles away from where war in Ukraine is raging. The military exercise is planned for next month. The 'Vostok' exercises are slated to take place from August 30 to September 5.

They appear intended to send a message that Russia, despite the costly five-month war in Ukraine, remains focused on the defence of its entire territory and capable in military terms of sustaining "business as usual".

Russian military has emphasised in a statement that its capacity to hold drills remains unaffected. The statement said that no training activity had been cancelled and all necessary personnel, equipment and weapons will be supplied for the exercise.

"We draw your attention to the fact that only a part of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is involved in the special military operation (in Ukraine), the number of which is quite sufficient to fulfil all the tasks set by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief," the statement said.

After its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia has suffered heavy losses and it progress has been slow. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has not ordered mobilisation of reserves. The reserves are estimated to include 2 million people.

CIA Director William Burns has said that about 15,000 Russian troops had been killed in Ukraine conflict. This is as many deaths as the Soviet army suffered during its decade-long occupation of Afghanistan in late seventies and eighties.

The upcoming military exercises have been planned to take place in the eastern military district. This includes part of Siberia. Headquarters of the eastern military district are in Khabarovsk, near the Chinese border.

His comments came as the war in Ukraine is approaching its fifth month. Lavrov told state media that now, the “geography is different”. He said: “It’s far from being just the DPR and LPR, it’s also Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and a number of other territories. And the process is continuing.” ‘Peace talks don’t make sense right now’ Lavrov also said that it makes no sense to resume peace talks with Kyiv at the moment. Lavrov said, “As the West pours more and more long-range weapons, such as HIMARS, into Ukraine in an impotent rage or in a desire to exacerbate the situation as much as possible, these HIMARS, (Ukraine’s Defence Minister Oleksii) Reznikov or someone else was boasting that they have already received 300 km ammo — well, that means the geographical tasks of the special operation will extend still further from the current line.” WATCH | Turkish President Erdogan keeps Vladimir Putin waiting ahead of talks in Iran Russia plans to annex additional Ukrainian territory: US Lavrov’s comments came a day after US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that they have “ample evidence” to claim that Russia plans to annex additional Ukrainian territory. 'Geography is different now': Russia's objectives in Ukraine not limited to eastern Donbas region, says Lavrov

Amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the United States is set to provide four more precision rocket systems to Ukraine to help counter the Russian aggression. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Wednesday (July 20) that his Ukrainian counterpart requested for Washington to send more M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (Himars). The Ukrainian official had claimed that Kyiv's forces have used them to destroy some 30 Russian command stations and ammunition depots so far. During an interaction with journalists at the Pentagon, Austin said: "Washington will send four more Himars advanced rocket systems for a total of 16. The Ukrainians have made excellent use of Himars, and you can see the impact on the battlefield." "Russia is keeping up its relentless shelling, and that's a cruel tactic that harkens back to the horrors of World War I. So Ukraine needs the firepower and the ammunition to withstand this barrage and to strike back," he said. It is said that the US will also send additional GMLRS ammunition, which can precisely strike targets up to 80 kilometres away. So far, in its military aid to Ukraine, US President Joe Biden's administration has refused to send longer-range ammunition. Long-range missiles would facilitate Ukraine to strike targets inside Russian territory and potentially expand the war into a direct clash with the West. On being asked about longer-range ammunition on Wednesday, Austin said: "We think what they have and what they're working with is really giving them a lot of capability." On Tuesday, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov urged for a major increase in the number of Himars. Reznikov claimed that at least 100 were needed for an effective counter-offensive against Moscow's troops. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
