Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the missile strikes on Ukraine that killed at least 21 people and injured dozens in built-up areas. Zelensky termed it as "conscious, deliberately targeted Russian terror". On Friday, explosions rocked Serhiivka while residents slept. This happened hours after Russian troops abandoned the Black Sea outpost of Snake Island. ALSO READ | Dozens of Russian weapons tycoons have faced no Western sanctions As per reports by news agencies, the missiles hit a nine-storey apartment building and a recreation centre in Serhiivka about 80 kilometres south of Odessa. The officials revealed that two children were among the dead and six others among the injured. Responding to the same, Zelensky said, "I emphasise: this is an act of deliberate, purposeful Russian terror -- and not some kind of mistake or an accidental missile strike." "Three missiles hit a regular nine-storey apartment building, in which nobody was hiding any weapons, any military equipment. Regular people, civilians, lived there," he added. United States President Joe Biden is sending more weapons to Ukraine to counter Russia's aggression. In a press conference on Thursday (June 30), Biden said that the US will provide another $800 million in weapons and military aid to Ukraine. The US President also praised the courage of Ukrainians since Russia invaded on February 24 this year. Biden said the United States and its NATO allies were united in standing up to Russian President Vladimir Putin. His comments came after a NATO summit in the Spanish capital Madrid. Biden told a news conference: "I don't know how it's going to end, but it will not end with Russia defeating Ukraine. Ukraine has already dealt a severe blow to Russia." In the aftermath of Russia's invasion, the United States has already announced more than $6.1 billion in aid to Ukraine. The formal announcement of more weapons would come on top of that. Biden announced an $800 million disbursement of US funding for Ukraine's military in "the next few days". As per reports, this will include "advanced Western air defence systems for Ukraine, more artillery and ammunition, counter-battery radar, additional ammunition for the HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems that we've already given Ukraine and more HIMARS coming from other countries as well." As per Biden, international contributions now amounted to "nearly 140,000 anti-tank systems, more than 600 tanks, nearly 500 artillery systems, more than 600,000 rounds of artillery ammunition, as well as advanced multiple launch rocket systems, anti-ship systems and air defence systems". Joe Biden to send more weapons to Ukraine: 'It will not end with Russia defeating Ukraine'

The United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday (June 29) said that if Russian President Vladimir Putin was a woman, he would not have invaded Ukraine, what Moscow calls a "special military operation" that was launched on February 24 this year. In a quite sarcastic way, Johnson dubbed Putin's decision of Ukraine's invasion a "perfect example of toxic masculinity". The British PM also mocked Putin's macho posturing. Boris told German broadcaster ZDF: "If Putin was a woman, which he obviously isn't, but if he were, I really don't think he would've embarked on a crazy, macho war of invasion and violence in the way that he has."

In the latest development, Russia on Thursday summoned Britain's ambassador to Moscow to seek clarification on Johnson's "offensive" remarks about Putin.

In a statement, the Russian foreign ministry told Ambassador Deborah Bronnert that it "firmly" opposed "the openly offensive comments by the British authorities towards Russia, its leader, its officials as well as the Russian people."

Slamming the "unacceptable insulting rhetoric", the ministry's statement further added, "in polite society, it is customary to apologise for remarks of this kind".

The Russian foreign ministry also objected to British statements about "deliberately false information, in particular about alleged Russian 'threats to use nuclear weapons'".

Previously, British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace accused the Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman of "every week, threatening to nuke everyone or doing something or another".

Putin also responded to Boris' remarks

Putin also rejected what Johnson had said about "toxic masculinity". In response, he gave an example of when ex-British leader Margaret Thatcher decided to send troops into the Falklands.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday during a visit to Turkmenistan, Putin said: "I just want to recall the events of recent history, when Margaret Thatcher decided to launch military operations against Argentina for the Falkland Islands. So, a woman took the decision to launch military action."

"Therefore it's not an entirely accurate reference from the British Prime Minister to what is happening today," he added.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo meets Putin to deliver Zelensky's message

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday that Russia's pullout from captured Snake Island shows futility of President Putin's strategoc goals in Ukraine.

"In the end, it will prove impossible for Putin to hold down a country that will not accept his rule," Johnson told a news conference after a NATO summit in Madrid.

Johnson added that agreement over any peace deal would be entirely upto Ukraine. He stressed unity against Russia from the NATO alliance and from G7 countries at a leaders' summit in Germany.

"We've seen what Ukraine can do to drive the Russians back," Johnson said.

"We've seen what they did around Kyiv and Kharkiv, now on Snake Island. I think the right thing for us is to keep going on the course that NATO has set out, no matter how difficult."

At the G7 summit, Johnson joked to fellow leaders that they could emulate Putin by posing topless to show their toughness.

The Russian leader responded that seeing Johnson and the other leaders half-naked would be "disgusting".

The prime minister refused to extend the war of words, arguing that Putin should reflect instead "about the consequences of his barbaric actions", including NATO's planned admission of Finland and Sweden.

"The most important conclusion that Vladimir Putin needs to draw from today and the last few days at NATO, and previously in the G7, is we are totally united in condemning what he has done in Ukraine," Johnson said.

Driven by Russia's actions, NATO members were committed to spending at least 2.0 percent of their gross domestic product on defence, he stressed.

Britain "will reach 2.5 percent of GDP on defence by the end of the decade", he added, although a row has erupted in London over whether Johnson's government is indeed sticking to that commitment.

General Sir Patrick Sanders, Britain's Chief of the General Staff, said on Tuesday (June 28) that the United Kingdom must be prepared to "fight and win" against Russia. Talking about the current tectonic shift in the geopolitical relations caused by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Sanders drew parallels with the build-up to the breakout of the Second World War. The country's army chief has said that "this is our 1937 moment". The new head of the British army warned that the country must mobilise in response to the threat posed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, invoking the Allies' struggle against Nazi Germany. ALSO READ | Russian missile strike on shopping mall kills at least 16 people, Ukraine says Patrick Sanders, a general who became the army's top officer this month, said that the Russian President Vladimir Putin and his "expansionist ambitions" represented "a clear and present danger" to Western "principles of sovereignty and democracy". While addressing an audience at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) for an annual army conference in London, Sanders said, "We are not at war. We must act rapidly so that we aren't drawn into one through a failure to contain territorial expansion." His comments were made as NATO members are meeting in Madrid Tuesday for a summit. The meeting is expected to be dominated by the West's response to Russia's war. He also called the scale of the war in Ukraine "unprecedented". He said, "In all my years in uniform I haven't known such a clear threat to the principles of sovereignty and democracy and the freedom to live without fear of violence as the brutal aggression of President Putin and his expansionist ambitions." The army head also backed the US and UK governments' stance of aggressively arming Ukraine in its fight against Russia to maintain peace throughout the rest of Europe. Russian president Vladimir Putin has now offered his Belarusian counterpart 'missile systems' that are capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The Kremlin has offered Iskander-M missile systems which can use ballistic or cruise missile.

The United States is expected to provide an additional $450 million in security assistance to Ukraine, including more long-range rocket systems, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Thursday.

Moscow’s forces are advancing in Ukraine’s east in a bid to capture the industrial heartland known as the Donbas, where Ukraine fears some of its troops could be encircled in a Russian pincer move.

One of the officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said an announcement was expected later on Thursday and the latest package is expected to include four additional High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).

The official added that details on the package could change at the last minute.

Earlier on Thursday, Ukraine said it had received the first tranche of HIMARS, a powerful long-range weapon system that Kyiv hopes can help turn the tide in the months-long battle.

The latest package comes after President Joe Biden's administration last week announced a fresh infusion of $1 billion in weapons for Ukraine that includes anti-ship rocket systems, artillery rockets, howitzers and ammunition.

The war has entered a brutal attritional phase in recent weeks, with Russian forces concentrating overwhelming artillery firepower on the Donbas, which Moscow claims on behalf of separatists.

Ukraine says it needs the HIMARS systems to better match the range of Russian rocket systems that it says are being extensively used to pummel Ukrainian positions in Donbas.

Washington has said it has received assurances from Kyiv that those longer-range weapons would not be used to attack Russian territory, fearing an escalation of the conflict.

U.S. officials have said that while HIMARS are important for Ukrainian forces, no single weapon system alone can change the war.

Moscow has warned it will strike targets in Ukraine which they "have not yet been hitting" if the West supplies longer-range missiles to Ukraine for use in high-precision mobile rocket systems.

In the ongoing war, two Britons and a Moroccan were captured while fighting for Ukraine against Russia. They were sentenced to death by a court in the self-proclaimed breakaway Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). Now, they are preparing to appeal, Russia's TASS news agency reported on Thursday (June 23) citing one of their lawyers. The court found Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner - and Moroccan Brahim Saadoun guilty of "mercenary activities" seeking to overthrow the republic. News agencies have noted that the court in DPR is armed and supported financially by Russia. "My colleagues and I are currently preparing the full text of an appeal against the sentence in the interests of our defendants," said Pinner's lawyer, Yulia Tserkovnikova as quoted by TASS. "Undoubtedly, if the appeal is dismissed and the sentence comes into force, a request for clemency will be filed as this is an inherent right of the defendants, under the legislation of the Donetsk People's Republic," she added. While WION takes utmost care to accurately report this developing news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos. The website of UK-based newspaper The Telegraph has been blocked in Russia, state communications regulator Roskomnadzor's data showed on Tuesday (June 21). TASS news agency cited the regulator as saying that the access to Telegraph.co.uk was restricted after it was found to have disseminated "inaccurate information about the special military operation conducted by Russia's Armed Forces on the territory of Ukraine." Russia announced the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, calling it a "special military operation". Ever since the invasion, Russia has cracked down on media coverage of the conflict, blocking the websites of foreign news outlets. Russia claims the international sites might have spread "fake" news about its military campaign. Although, The Telegraph has claimed that it is the first British newspaper to have its website blocked in Russia. But, notably, the website of the BBC was among other sites that were apparently blocked in Russia for their coverage of the Ukraine war. The Telegraph said: "The Telegraph is proud of its reporting of the invasion of Ukraine and regrets attempts by Russia to restrict press freedoms." Meanwhile, a Russian television signal was turned on in the occupied southern region of Kherson. It appears as the latest move aimed at strengthening Moscow's control over the area. Russia has already introduced the ruble in Kherson and begun distributing Russian passports. Kherson is the city of the same name was the first to fall to Russia within days of the invasion. The Russia-Ukraine war has threatened to cause an energy crisis in the coming winter as Europe's biggest gas buyers from Moscow are finding alternative fuel supplies.

The Russia-Ukraine war has threatened to cause an energy crisis in the coming winter as Europe's biggest gas buyers from Moscow are finding alternative fuel supplies. As a result, they could burn more coal to cope with reduced gas flows. Recently, Germany said that it will take emergency measures to ensure it meets its energy needs after the drop in the supply of Russian gas. The so-called, emergency measures include increased use of coal. Germany's economy ministry said in a statement: "To reduce gas consumption, less gas must be used to generate electricity. Coal-fired power plants will have to be used more instead." On the other hand, Austria also announced that it would reopen a mothballed coal power station because of power shortages. After a crisis meeting of the government, the authorities said that they would work with the Verbund group, which is the country's main electricity supplier, to get the station back in action. Meanwhile, the Netherlands said it would lift all restrictions on power stations fired by the fossil fuel. Earlier, they were limited to just over a third of output. Dutch climate and energy minister Rob Jetten told journalists in The Hague that the cabinet has decided to "immediately withdraw the restriction" on production for coal-fired power stations from 2002 to 2024. Europe is trying to cope with the crisis. In the process, European nations are inclined to burn more coal, but isn't it hypocrisy? The European governments have been accused of exploiting the fossil fuel reserves of the developing world. Leading European nations are firing up their coal plants again - after refusing to commit to climate financing. WATCH this report: × If we talk about Germany, how the country will plan to exit coal in 2030? As the authorities said that will ease restrictions on power stations fired by fossil fuels. Not just Germany, the EU's ambition is to become climate neutral by 2050. Going back to using coal for power generation seriously threatens that. Even Brussels raised concerns as European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen told several European media in an interview: "We have to make sure that we use this crisis to move forward and not to have a backsliding on the dirty fossil fuels." She added that it's a "fine line and it is not determined whether we are going to take the right turn". Neil Makaroff of Climate Action Network said that turning back to coal "is a bad choice" with structural consequences. Makaroff said that the "countries are continuing to back fossil energy rather than investing enough in renewables." "The risk is substituting one dependency for another: importing Colombian or Australian coal, US or Qatari liquified natural gas, to replace Russian hydrocarbons," he added. 'Ukraine crisis is a wakeup call': Xi Jinping warns against 'expanding military alliances'

Disclaimer: A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While WION takes utmost care to accurately report this developing news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos. Stephen Zabielski, a United States citizen was killed while fighting for Ukraine against Russia amid the ongoing war, the US State Department said Tuesday (June 21). Zabielski is the second US citizen to die fighting against Russian forces. As per an obituary published in a New York newspaper The Recorder, the 52-year-old Zabielski was killed on May 15 in the village of Dorozhnyanka, Zaporizhzhia Oblast. However, US State Department confirmed the news on Tuesday. The department has not revealed the details about Zabielski's unfortunate death as it said: "Out of respect to the family during this difficult time, we have nothing further." In a statement, a State Department spokesperson said the agency has been in touch with his family and provided "all possible consular assistance." However, a report by Rolling Stone mentioned that Zabielski, who was a US war veteran-turned-construction worker, died after stepping on a landmine. The spokesperson's statement repeated earlier warnings that US citizens should not travel to Ukraine because of the conflict and the potential for the Russian government to single them out. It added that any citizens in Ukraine should depart immediately. Despite the earlier warnings not to take up arms in Ukraine, several Americans have volunteered to fight alongside Ukrainian forces. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday confirmed that Americans Andy Huynh, 27, of Hartselle, Alabama, and Alexander Drueke, 39, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, were detained while fighting on the Ukrainian side. Peskov said they were mercenaries who endangered the lives of Russian servicemen and should face responsibility for their actions. 'Africa is actually a hostage': Zelensky blames food crisis on Russia

Amid the Ukraine war, Russia has become China's biggest supplier of oil, customs data showed on Monday (June 20). Amid sanctions on Moscow for invading Ukraine, China's imports of oil from Russia rose 55 per cent in May, displacing Saudi Arabia as China's biggest provider. In May, China imported around 8.42 million tonnes of oil from Russia.

Unlike the West, Beijing has refused to condemn Moscow's war. This year in February, China and Russia declared their friendship had "no limits". Moreover, Chinese President Xi Jinping last week assured his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that Beijing will support Moscow's "sovereignty and security".

In the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Western countries imposed economic sanctions on Moscow. It caused a massive impact on imports and exports, and disturbances in supply chain issues. The customs data comes four months into the war, with other buyers avoiding Russian energy imports.
