On New Year, Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of attacks

Russia on Sunday (Dec 31) claimed that it attacked military facilities in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv overnight, including a hotel housing military commanders and "foreign mercenaries", calling it retaliation for Ukraine's strikes on Belgorod the previous day.&nbsp;

Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said on Sunday that at least six missiles hit Kharkiv in the first wave of Russia's attacks. It injured at least 28 people and hit residential buildings, hotels and medical facilities.&nbsp;

According to Russia's statement, the attack targeted the former Kharkiv Palace hotel as well as the Kharkiv region offices of the Ukrainian Security Service.&nbsp;

It further added that military and intelligence professionals participating in Ukraine's offensive on Belgorod, as well as "foreign mercenaries and militants" planning cross-border incursions, were among those killed.&nbsp;

However, Ukraine denied Russian claims that Ukrainian intelligence officers were killed in the strike. As reported by Euromaidan News, Andriy Yusov, who is a spokesperson for the GUR military intelligence agency, said the statements from Russia were "yet another delusional fantasy from the terrorist regime waging a genocidal war against Ukraine".&nbsp;

"As for the latest nonsense from what is called the Ministry of Defence of the aggressor state, we can assure you that no DIU [Defence Intelligence of Ukraine] officers, nor any DIU soldiers from Ukraine’s Kraken special unit, were injured during another terrorist attack on Kharkiv yesterday [30 December]," Yusov added in comments to the Ukraine Pravda media outlet.&nbsp;

Earlier, Ukrainian officials said that two boys aged 14 and 16 and a security adviser for a team of German journalists were among those injured in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city.&nbsp;

Russia-Ukraine war: Drone and artillery attack kills 6 in Ukrainian city, causes power outage

Russia on Monday (Dec 25) claimed to have fully controlled the town of Marinka in eastern Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin hailed it as a "success" that would mean less shelling on the nearby Russian-held city of Donetsk.&nbsp;

In a meeting shown on state television, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told Putin that "our [Russia's] assault units have today completely liberated the settlement of Maryinka".&nbsp;

Maryinka, which was once home to 10,000 people, is located southwest of Donetsk and most accounts have described it as a ghost town, but Moscow sees it as Russia's most significant gain since the capture of Bakhmut in May.&nbsp;

Earlier, the Russian army's victory in Bakhmut was a major success, which came after some of the bloodiest fighting. Russia-Ukraine war: Moscow claims to have seized town in eastern Ukraine

Former TV journalist and Russian lawmaker calling for peace in Ukraine, Yekaterina Duntsova, submitted her application on Wednesday (Dec 20) to challenge incumbent President Vladimir Putin in the country’s upcoming elections in March 2024.&nbsp;

She presented her documents to Russia’s Central Election Commission to register as a candidate days after taking her first steps toward candidate status Sunday. In line with the country’s law, her run had to be endorsed by 500 supporters.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Humane’ Russia</h2>

The 40-year-old Russian lawmaker hopes to challenge Putin by promoting her vision of a “humane” Russia “that’s peaceful, friendly and ready to cooperate with everyone on the principle of respect.”

Duntsova, in an interview with Reuters last month, called for an end to the war in Ukraine and the release of political prisoners, including opposition leader Alexei Navalny.&nbsp;

She has submitted her documents to formally enter the election which Putin is expected to win, a foregone conclusion by supporters and opponents alike.&nbsp;

Former TV journalist and Russian lawmaker calling for peace in Ukraine, Yekaterina Duntsova, submitted her application on Wednesday (Dec 20) to challenge incumbent President Vladimir Putin in the country’s upcoming elections in March 2024. She presented her documents to Russia’s Central Election Commission to register as a candidate days after taking her first steps toward candidate status Sunday. In line with the country’s law, her run had to be endorsed by 500 supporters. ‘Humane’ Russia The 40-year-old Russian lawmaker hopes to challenge Putin by promoting her vision of a “humane” Russia “that’s peaceful, friendly and ready to cooperate with everyone on the principle of respect.” Duntsova, in an interview with Reuters last month, called for an end to the war in Ukraine and the release of political prisoners, including opposition leader Alexei Navalny. She has submitted her documents to formally enter the election which Putin is expected to win, a foregone conclusion by supporters and opponents alike. Russia-Ukraine war: Zelensky says Trump presidency could have 'strong impact' on war

Vladimir Putin told the conference of senior defence officials on Tuesday (Dec 19) that Russia is upgrading its nuclear arsenal amid its ongoing war against Ukraine and Western fears of nuclear conflict.&nbsp;

Putin said that Moscow is keeping its strategic forces at the highest level of readiness as the West wages a "hybrid war" against it.&nbsp;

"Due to the changing character of military threats and as new military and political risks arise, the role of the nuclear triad has significantly increased. It ensures a strategic balance of power in the world," Putin said as translated by the news agency Reuters.&nbsp;

"Overall, the level of modern weaponry in the strategic nuclear forces has been brought (up) to 95 per cent. When it comes to naval forces, it's almost (at) 100 per cent. By the end of the year, 15 Yars and Avangard missile complexes will be deployed for service," he added.&nbsp;

"We need to continue maintaining combat readiness of the strategic forces at the highest level. All the approved goals in this area will be reached without a doubt," he further said.&nbsp;

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (Dec 14) said that Moscow's goals of "military special operation" in Ukraine haven't changed as he&nbsp;renewed confidence in Russia's victory in the war against Ukraine.&nbsp;

He provided a rare detail on Russia's military operation stating that some 244,000 Russian troops are currently fighting in Ukraine, and further mentioned that there was no need for a further mobilisation of army reservists.&nbsp;

During his press conference, the Russian president said that a total of 486,000 soldiers had signed a contract with the Russian military as of Wednesday evening.&nbsp;

He said that the Kremlin doesn't need a second wave of mobilisation of reservists, with 1,500 men recruited into the army every day across the country.&nbsp;

Ahead of the conference, Putin was greeted with applause as he arrived in the hall in central Moscow, which is close to the Kremlin.&nbsp;

<h2>'Peace possible in Ukraine after...'</h2>

Putin said that peace was possible with Ukraine only after Moscow achieved its goals in the nearly two-year conflict.&nbsp;

He said, "There will be peace when we achieve our goals. They are not changing. I will remind you what we talked about: the de-Nazification and de-militarisation of Ukraine, and its neutral status."&nbsp;

He also said that Russian forces were "improving their position on almost the entire line of contact".&nbsp;

Putin also weighed in on the ongoing war in West Asia as he described the situation in the Gaza Strip as a "catastrophe". He said that the Israel-Hamas war can't be compared to the Ukraine conflict. Putin's government has maintained ties with Hamas and Israel.&nbsp;

"Everybody here and around the world can see and look at the special military operation and at what is happening in Gaza and feel the difference," he said, using the Kremlin's name for its conflict in Ukraine.

Putin also said that he is hopeful about the Russia-US deal on detained Americans. He said he wanted Moscow and Washington to arrive at a solution to secure the release of two high-profile Americans — reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US marine Paul Whelan — held by Moscow on espionage charges.&nbsp;

Putin said, "There are contacts on this issue and dialogue is ongoing, but it's not straightforward. I hope we will find a solution. But the US side should also hear us and make a decision that will suit the Russian Federation."&nbsp;

His comments came just after a court in Moscow ruled that Gershkovich, arrested in March, be held in detention until January 30.

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (Dec 14) said that Moscow's goals of "military special operation" in Ukraine haven't changed as he renewed confidence in Russia's victory in the war against Ukraine. He provided a rare detail on Russia's military operation stating that some 244,000 Russian troops are currently fighting in Ukraine, and further mentioned that there was no need for a further mobilisation of army reservists. During his press conference, the Russian president said that a total of 486,000 soldiers had signed a contract with the Russian military as of Wednesday evening. Also read: At least one civilian killed, 11 injured after Russian drone, missile attacks in southern Ukraine He said that the Kremlin doesn't need a second wave of mobilisation of reservists, with 1,500 men recruited into the army every day across the country. Ahead of the conference, Putin was greeted with applause as he arrived in the hall in central Moscow, which is close to the Kremlin. This year, ordinary citizens have the chance to phone in questions along with those asked by journalists. For two weeks Russians have been submitting questions for Putin. Putin said that peace was possible with Ukraine only after Moscow achieved its goals in the nearly two-year conflict. He said, "There will be peace when we achieve our goals. They are not changing. I will remind you what we talked about: the de-Nazification and de-militarisation of Ukraine, and its neutral status." He also said that Russian forces were "improving their position on almost the entire line of contact". Watch: War in Gaza would continue 'with or without international support' × Putin on Israel-Hamas war Putin also weighed in on the ongoing war in West Asia as he described the situation in the Gaza Strip as a "catastrophe". He said that the Israel-Hamas war can't be compared to the Ukraine conflict. Putin's government has maintained ties with Hamas and Israel. "Everybody here and around the world can see and look at the special military operation and at what is happening in Gaza and feel the difference," he said, using the Kremlin's name for its conflict in Ukraine. "But there is nothing like this in Ukraine," he added. Putin on Russia-US deal on detained Americans Putin also said that he is hopeful about the Russia-US deal on detained Americans. He said he wanted Moscow and Washington to arrive at a solution to secure the release of two high-profile Americans — reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US marine Paul Whelan — held by Moscow on espionage charges. Putin said, "There are contacts on this issue and dialogue is ongoing, but it's not straightforward. I hope we will find a solution. But the US side should also hear us and make a decision that will suit the Russian Federation." His comments came just after a court in Moscow ruled that Gershkovich, arrested in March, be held in detention until January 30. Russia-Ukraine war: Missile attack rocks Kyiv, cyberattack leaves millions without internet

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reached Capitol Hill on Tuesday (Dec 12) morning to meet the members of the Congress and newly minted House Speaker Mike Johnson before meeting President Joe Biden at the White House to discuss critical aid that his troops need in the war against Russia.&nbsp;

This is Zelensky's third visit to the US but unlike the maiden trip last year when he was serenaded by both houses and sent back&nbsp;with a $50 billion cheque, it looks highly unlikely that he will receive a similar treatment this time.&nbsp;

The Republicans, ahead of the crucial presidential election, have put their foot down and are refusing to send additional weapons and other aid unless it is paired with a crackdown on migration from the south of the border (Mexico).&nbsp;

With winter already here, Moscow is expected to ramp up its attack on civilian and energy infrastructure in Ukraine. Zelensky is worried that the aid faucet may run dry and thus another round of funding is required to continue the war, which has already been going on for over 21 months.&nbsp;

<h2>Zelensky's previous meeting with Biden</h2>

Notably, Zelensky&nbsp;met Biden in September and after much back and forth, managed to walk away with another tranche of aid package from Washington. However, his demand to address the joint session of the US Congress was shot down without giving any major clarification.&nbsp;

Despite the refusal, Biden formally announced a military aid package worth $325 million that included air defence systems and the second tranche of cluster munitions fired by a 155-millimeter Howitzer cannon. Additionally, the US delivered US M1 Abrams tanks to Kyiv to bolster its counteroffensive against the Russians.&nbsp;

The counteroffensive, launched by&nbsp;Ukraine under Zelensky earlier this year, has made little to no inroads. His visit to Washington is an attempt to regroup and secure military funding for another round of defence.&nbsp;

In recent days, Moscow has tried to intensify the assaults by using a record number of drones, according to Kyiv. Moreover, Putin has hinted towards a major change in strategy as he signed a decree that allows the army to boost its troop numbers by 15 per cent.

According to estimates, the move is expected to increase the number of serving army soldiers by at least 170,000, which is being touted as an&nbsp;"adequate" response to the "aggressive activity of the NATO bloc".

Zelensky arrives in Capitol to secure another round of funding from Biden

The Biden administration is considering getting behind new restrictions on who can seek&nbsp;asylum&nbsp;and an expanded deportation process to secure new aid for Ukraine and Israel in a supplemental funding bill, a source familiar with discussions said.

The White House and US&nbsp;Congress are racing to strike a deal that would deliver military aid to the two allied nations while discouraging illegal immigration across the US-Mexico border with only a week until lawmakers depart for a Christmas break.

Republicans have refused to approve more Ukraine funding without additional measures to reduce the record number of migrants attempting to cross the US&nbsp;border illegally, leading to a complex negotiation pairing the largely unrelated issues.

President Joe Biden, a Democrat seeking reelection in 2024, said on Wednesday that he would be willing to make significant concessions on border security as Senate Republicans rejected a Democratic aid package with $20 billion in border funding.

The White House would be open to heightening the standard for initial&nbsp;asylum&nbsp;screenings, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters, requesting anonymity to discuss the talks.

The Biden administration also would entertain some form of a "safe third country" provision that would deny&nbsp;asylum&nbsp;to migrants who pass through another country en route to the US, the source said.

Another possible point of agreement could be expanding a fast-track deportation process known as "expedited removal." The authority would be employed nationwide instead of its current application at the border, the source said.

A bipartisan group of senators trying to reach a deal are also discussing a numerical limitation on&nbsp;asylum&nbsp;claims, the source said. The Biden administration position on such a cap remains unclear.

White House spokesperson Angelo Fernandez Hernandez said Biden has made it clear "the border is broken" and that Congress should take action to fix it.

"The president has said he is open to compromise," he said in a statement.

The Republican-led House of Representatives is scheduled to wrap up work for the year by Dec. 14, leaving a tight window to pass legislation. The Democratic-led Senate faces a similar timeline.

With that in mind, the goal seems more to strike a top-line deal and perhaps work on the exact details of the legislative text over the break, sources said.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons said Thursday the gap between his party and Republicans remains "stubbornly large" but that he remains optimistic they can find common ground.

White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre criticized Republicans during a press briefing on Thursday.

"They are playing chicken with our national security," she said. "History will remember them harshly."

Republican Senator Thom Tillis, part of the bipartisan group trying to hash out a border security compromise, told reporters on Wednesday that any proposal would have to cut illegal immigration at least by half and that he did not know if a deal could be reached before Christmas.

"We’ve got a lot more work to do," he said.

<h2>Nuke fears loom&nbsp;</h2>

During the course of Ukraine's war, which started last year on February 24, Putin has often warned the West by saying that Russia would retaliate if anyone tried to launch a nuclear attack against it.&nbsp;

The tensions escalated after Putin deployed tactical nuclear missiles in Belarus and shifted Russia's stance on two major arms treaties. Moscow has insisted that it is not recklessly "brandishing" atomic weapons or changing its doctrine on their use.&nbsp;

This tour also came ahead of a re-election campaign as Putin is expected this month to confirm that he will run for another six-year term in March.&nbsp;

As seen in the videos released by local outlets, Putin was with a group of schoolchildren writing a message on a giant whiteboard about his hopes for their future.&nbsp;

He was also seen selecting from among wishes that children had pinned to a Christmas tree in the hope he could make them come true.&nbsp;

And that's where we start telling the story about the summer after WWII. It's 1945, and the parade on Red Square in Moscow takes place on June 24." As translated by the news agency Reuters, Polunin showing an exhibition to Putin further said: "When he (US President Harry Truman) met (nuclear physicist and inventor of American atomic bomb Robert) Oppenheimer, he asked him, when the Russians will have a bomb. Oppenheimer said he didn't know." The tensions escalated after Putin deployed tactical nuclear missiles in Belarus and shifted Russia's stance on two major arms treaties. Moscow has insisted that it is not recklessly "brandishing" atomic weapons or changing its doctrine on their use. This tour also came ahead of a re-election campaign as Putin is expected this month to confirm that he will run for another six-year term in March. He was also seen selecting from among wishes that children had pinned to a Christmas tree in the hope he could make them come true. (With inputs from agencies)

Kyiv officials accused Moscow of committing a war crime after a grainy video on social media appeared to show several soldiers shooting two surrendering military personnel who emerged from a dugout at gunpoint.

The unverified video shows one soldier coming out of a foxhole on the battlefield with his hands up and then lying on the ground. A second soldier stumbles out and also lies down. The Russian troops then appear to open fire and the video ends.

Russia denies committing war crimes during its 21-month-old war in Ukraine. Kyiv says Russia regularly violates the rules of war.

"The execution of those who surrender is a war crime!" Ukrainian human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said late on Saturday on the Telegram messaging platform.

"Today, a video of the execution by Russian servicemen of Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered as prisoners appeared online. This is another violation of the Geneva Conventions and disrespect for international humanitarian law."

Deepstate, a popular Ukrainian war blog which posted the video clip, said the footage was filmed near Stepove on the Avdiivka front line in Donetsk region.

The General Prosecutor's Office said the incident took place in Pokrovsk district, a large area of the Donetsk region that runs close to Avdiivka, site of some of the fiercest fighting in recent weeks.

Oleksandr Shtupun, a spokesperson for Ukraine's Tavria military command, told the Ukrainska Pravda news website that the video was "glaring confirmation" that Russia violates the rules of warfare on a daily basis.

In March, a Ukrainian sniper was seen being shot dead in a video after defiantly saying "Glory to Ukraine," or "Slava Ukraini," a phrase that has taken on special significance as a common public greeting since the start of the war.

White House says time running out to support Ukraine's fight against Russia

Many US and European arms companies could not significantly ramp up their production capacity in 2022 due to the Ukraine war, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in a report on Monday (Dec 4).

Many US and European arms companies could not significantly ramp up their production capacity in 2022 due to the Ukraine war, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in a report on Monday (Dec 4). As per the report, Russia's offensive in Ukraine (which started in February 2022), and geopolitical tensions around the world fuelled a strong increase in demand for weapons and military equipment last year. "However, despite receiving new orders, many US and European arms companies could not significantly ramp up production capacity because of labour shortages, soaring costs and supply chain disruptions that were exacerbated by the war in Ukraine," the report said. "In addition, countries placed new orders late in the year and the time lag between orders and production meant that the surge in demand was not reflected in these companies’ 2022 revenues," it added. Also read: Putin signs decree to add 170,000 troops to its armed forces as war with Ukraine takes toll Dr Lucie Béraud-Sudreau, Director of SIPRI’s Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme, said that many arms companies faced obstacles in adjusting to production for high-intensity warfare. "However, new contracts were signed, notably for ammunition, which could be expected to translate into higher revenue in 2023 and beyond," Dr Béraud-Sudreau added. Asia, Oceania, Middle East see increased revenues Contrary to US and European arms companies, those in Asia, Oceania and the Middle East saw their arms revenues grow significantly last year, demonstrating their ability to respond to an increased demand within a shorter time frame, as per the SIPRI report. Also read: Ukraine launches investigation into alleged Russian execution of surrendering Ukrainian soldiers In 2022, the arms revenues of the 22 companies from Asia and Oceania listed in SIPRI's Top 100 ranking of arms producers and military services providers rose by 3.1 per cent to reach $134 billion. This was the second consecutive year where the Top 100 arms revenues for Asia and Oceania were higher than those for Europe. Xiao Liang, a researcher with the institute's Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme, said domestic demand and the reliance on local suppliers shielded Asian arms companies from supply chain disruptions last year. "Companies in China, India, Japan and Taiwan all benefited from sustained government investment in military modernisation," Liang added. US arms companies see drop in revenues due to production challenges Monday's report said that arms revenues of the 42 American companies in the Top 100 fell by nearly 8 per cent to $302 billion in 2022. "Of the 42 US companies, 32 recorded a fall in year-on-year arms revenue, most commonly citing ongoing supply chain issues and labour shortages stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic," the report said. Nan Tian, a senior researcher at SIPRI said that there was an influx of new orders linked to the Ukraine war and some major American companies, including Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies, received new orders as a result. "However, because of these companies’ existing order backlogs and difficulties in ramping up production capacity, the revenue from these orders will probably only be reflected in company accounts in two to three years’ time," Tian added. European firms see modest revenue growth The SIPRI report further said that European arms firms saw a modest growth in their revenues which rose by 0.9 per cent to reach $121 billion in 2022. "The war in Ukraine created a demand for material suited to a war of attrition, like ammunition and armoured vehicles. Many European producers of these items saw their revenues grow," said Lorenzo Scarazzato, a researcher with the Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme.

In what can be seen as another Russian attempt to control public opinion on its soil, the country's interior ministry has prepared a draw legislation that would in effect, make foreigners sign a "loyalty agreement" which will forbid them from criticising Russia's official policy, discrediting history of the Soviet military or contravening traditional family values.

Russian people have been witness to introduction of series of tough laws since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. These laws forbid people from discrediting the military. War critics and opposition activists have been handed lengthy jail sentences by courts which held that the defendants violated these laws.

Russia is due to hold presidential elections in 2024. Since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin has sought to portray what he calls the 'special military operation' as part of an existential battle with the West. He has said that he will defend the 'sacred' civilisation from what he calls as the West decadence.

According to a report by state news agency TASS, the legislation has been prepared by the interior ministry and it forces all foreigners to sign an agreement that would restrict what they can say publicly.

TASS said that a foreigner in Russia will be prohibited from "interfering with the activities of public authorities of the Russian Federation, discrediting in any form the foreign and domestic state policy of the Russian Federation, public authorities and their officials"

It has been reported that the proposed agreement would have clauses that deal with family, morality, &nbsp;"propaganda about non-traditional sexual relations" and history.

Foreigners will be barred from "distorting the historical truth about the feat of the Soviet people in the defence of the Fatherland and its contribution to the victory over fascism".

It was not immediately clear if the legislation was aimed at certain nationalities or all foreigners. Also, there was no information about what the punishment would be if a foreigner is held to have violated terms of the agreement.

Reuters reported that Kremlin declined to comment.

Russia takes steps to make foreigners sign a 'loyalty agreement'

Ukraine has claimed that Russian forces have intensified the fighting to capture the eastern Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, which has been at the forefront of the conflict since 2014. The town's top official was quoted as saying on Monday (Nov 27) that the Russian army was trying to advance on all sides after weeks of fighting.&nbsp;

Avdiivka was briefly captured in 2014 by Russian-financed separatists who seized large chunks of eastern Ukraine. However, fortifications were later built around the town.&nbsp;

Since mid-October, the Russian troops have been pressing land and air-based attacks on Avdiivka to achieve their aim to push through eastern Ukraine's Donbas region.&nbsp;

Vitaliy Barabash, who is the head of Avdiivka's military administration, gave the latest information, which came after last week's reports that Ukrainian troops had made some headway in halting and pushing back the Russian advance.&nbsp;

Barabash told the media outlet Espreso TV: "Things in the Avdiivka sector have become even tougher. The intensity of clashes has been increasing for some time."&nbsp;

"The Russians have opened up two more sectors from which they have begun making assaults - in the direction of Donetsk ... and in the so-called industrial zone. The enemy is attempting to storm the city from all directions," he added.&nbsp;

The region has faced the wrath of ongoing fighting as Ukrainian officials claim that not a single building remains intact after months of battle&nbsp;in the town. They also noted that fewer than 1,500 residents remained of 32,000 before the war. Major fighting has focused on the industrial zone and the coking plant.&nbsp;

In the earlier reports, Barabash said that Ukrainian forces had in recent days pushed back Russian forces near Stepove, a village northwest of Avdiivka, pinning them down near a rail line.&nbsp;

Ukraine has claimed that Russian forces have intensified the fighting to capture the eastern Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, which has been at the forefront of the conflict since 2014.

Ukraine has claimed that Russian forces have intensified the fighting to capture the eastern Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, which has been at the forefront of the conflict since 2014. The town's top official was quoted as saying on Monday (Nov 27) that the Russian army was trying to advance on all sides after weeks of fighting. Avdiivka was briefly captured in 2014 by Russian-financed separatists who seized large chunks of eastern Ukraine. However, fortifications were later built around the town. Since mid-October, the Russian troops have been pressing land and air-based attacks on Avdiivka to achieve their aim to push through eastern Ukraine's Donbas region. Vitaliy Barabash, who is the head of Avdiivka's military administration, gave the latest information, which came after last week's reports that Ukrainian troops had made some headway in halting and pushing back the Russian advance. Also read: Oil's new currency landscape: Russia's struggle beyond the dollar Barabash told the media outlet Espreso TV: "Things in the Avdiivka sector have become even tougher. The intensity of clashes has been increasing for some time." "The Russians have opened up two more sectors from which they have begun making assaults - in the direction of Donetsk ... and in the so-called industrial zone. The enemy is attempting to storm the city from all directions," he added. The region has faced the wrath of ongoing fighting as Ukrainian officials claim that not a single building remains intact after months of battle in the town. They also noted that fewer than 1,500 residents remained of 32,000 before the war. Major fighting has focused on the industrial zone and the coking plant. In the earlier reports, Barabash said that Ukrainian forces had in recent days pushed back Russian forces near Stepove, a village northwest of Avdiivka, pinning them down near a rail line. Ukraine claims Russian forces advancing on eastern town of Avdiivka from all sides

United States and Germany are reportedly nudging Ukraine to end its war with Russia, German media reported quoting sources, indicating that “war fatigue” and economic problems are making difficult for the NATO allies to back Kyiv.

German tabloid BILD reported that during talks between United States President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in March at the Roosevelt Room, both had agreed to deliberately limit arm supplies to Ukraine and put indirect pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to come to the peace talks with Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

<h2>'Appropriate amount' of weapons to Ukraine&nbsp;</h2>

The tabloid, quoting an unnamed official, reported that both US and Germany, two primary military donors to Ukraine, intend to supply just an “appropriate amount” of weapons so that Ukraine can maintain its lead and have sufficient room for peace negotiation, but just not enough to reclaim its land.

The German federal government has now set itself the main goal of putting Ukraine in a “strategically good negotiating position,” BILD said.

“The country should negotiate with (Russian dictator) Vladimir Putin's regime about its ‘sovereignty and territorial integrity.’ The White House and the Chancellery are coordinating on this,” government sources told BILD.

Berlin and Washington expect that if Kyiv and Moscow refuse to hold formal negotiations, the issue will remain frozen, and there will be no official accord.

“Zelensky&nbsp;should come to the realisation that things cannot go on like this,” a German government insider told BILD.

<h2>If peace talks fail, then Plan B</h2>

However, if limiting weapon supplies fails to enable Ukraine with peace talks, the source told BILD that US and Germany have a “Plan B” in place.

“What Berlin and Washington are striving for as an alternative to negotiations is a frozen conflict, without agreement between the conflicting parties,” the source said.

US, Germany forcing Ukraine to end war with Russia and ready to accept new boundary: Report

Local Ukrainian officials have alleged that Russia on Saturday (Nov 25) launched its largest drone attack against the capital of Kyiv since the war started last year in February. Media reports claimed that at least five people were injured.&nbsp;

Ukraine's Air Force in a Telegram post noted that "a total of nearly 75 Shahed drones were launched from two directions – Primorsko-Akhtarsk and the Kursk region, Russia. The primary target was the city of Kyiv". The official said that there was a "record number" of drones.

The air force also stated that the air defences intercepted 71 of the Iranian-made drones across six regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv.&nbsp;

The Air Force said: "Anti-aircraft missile troops, tactical aviation, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare units were involved in repelling the air attack." As per the Air Force, a Kh-59 guided missile was also destroyed in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Ukraine also said that dozens of residential buildings and over 100 facilities were without power in Kyiv. Ukraine's energy ministry said in a statement that the "large-scale drone attack" cut off power to an overhead line.&nbsp;

"As a result, 77 residential buildings and 120 facilities in the central part of the city lost power," he said, further adding that work was underway to restore service.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Friday (Nov 24) that the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine risked lasting until 2030 if peace talks did not start. Addressing a press conference in Prague after meeting his Czech counterpart Petr Fiala, Prime Minister Fico said, "This conflict is frozen, it is in a state wherein it may last until 2029 or 2030."&nbsp;

"It is better to lead talks for 10 years in peace or with suspended combat operations than to go to the negotiations table after 10 years without any result, only to find out that we have another 500 or 600 thousand dead," he added.

Fico won Slovakia's parliamentary election in September. During the election campaign, he pledged to discontinue the military aid given to Ukraine by previous governments. Before he came to power, Slovakia sent military aid in 13 packages worth $718.24 million to Ukraine.

However, Fico's three-party cabinet comprising far-right ministers has already blocked a $44-million military aid package to Ukraine planned by the previous administration.

Fico pointed out that although Slovakia would not provide Ukraine with further military aid, it would not object to others offering it. "If the Czech Republic or any other country in the world or Europe decides to provide Ukraine with military aid, we won't condemn anyone," he said during the joining press conference with Czech PM Fiala.

Since the beginning of the war in February last year, the Czech Republic and Slovakia both accepted thousands of Ukrainian war refugees. But the two countries have now split over whether to continue military aid.&nbsp;

"I am convinced it still makes sense because Ukraine needs our help for its courageous struggle," Fiala told reporters.&nbsp;

Ukraine war: Conflict risks lasting to 2030 without peace talks, says Slovak PM

Ukraine's&nbsp;largest private energy company DTEK is ready for another&nbsp;winter&nbsp;and Russian attacks, but its&nbsp;power&nbsp;plants&nbsp;need&nbsp;more&nbsp;missile&nbsp;defence&nbsp;systems to operate safely, Chief Executive Officer Maxim Timchenko told Reuters.

Since Russia's February 2022 invasion, Europe, including members of the former Soviet Union and the ex-Communist bloc, has supplied hundreds of transformers, miles of cables and thousands of diesel generators&nbsp;needed for light and heat in the country in&nbsp;winter, when temperatures fall well below freezing point

However, the experience of the past 12 months has prompted Ukraine to seek more air&nbsp;defence&nbsp;systems to protect its critical infrastructure.

"We&nbsp;need&nbsp;more Patriots, more IRIS systems. We cannot protect ourselves against ballistic&nbsp;missiles if we don't have air&nbsp;defence&nbsp;systems," Timchenko told Reuters in an interview in Warsaw.

"I know that our president and our government have been doing everything that they can to bring the message that we&nbsp;need&nbsp;this equipment to protect our energy system."

In the first 10 months of this year, DTEK’s&nbsp;power&nbsp;plants&nbsp;produced enough electricity to meet the demand of around 4.1 million households.

Every one of DTEK's 13&nbsp;power&nbsp;stations has come under fire from Russia, which has launched sustained attacks on the country's&nbsp;power&nbsp;grid. In recent weeks alone, Russia has attacked Ukrainian energy infrastructure with different weapons 60 times.

In total, 13 of DTEK's&nbsp;power&nbsp;units, with a total capacity of 2.3 gigawatts, have been damaged, destroyed, or occupied, causing blackouts, Timchenko said.

Since April, DTEK has managed to bring back eight out of 13&nbsp;power&nbsp;units, two are under repair, while two coal-fired&nbsp;plants&nbsp;that were mothballed are also set to work during the&nbsp;winter.

The company will have brought all of its lost capacity back into operation, Timchenko said.

DTEK has also secured enough coal and gas to feed its&nbsp;power&nbsp;plants, including 280,000 metric tons of coal from Poland, which could be increased to as much as 400,000 tons.

"Coal from Poland is more expensive than the fuel that could be sourced in Amsterdam but it's definitely less expensive than in Ukraine," he added. BETTING ON LNGDTEK, the largest private gas producer in the country, last year produced 2 billion cubic metres of gas or about 10% of&nbsp;Ukraine's&nbsp;total consumption. Gas usage has fallen by 30-35% since the start of the war, but the company has managed production to maintain a balance between supply and demand, Timchenko said.

The company's trading arm, D.Trading is now exploring opportunities in the liquefied gas trading business, betting on expectations that LNG will play a crucial market role after Europe reduced supplies of pipeline gas from Russia.

Last summer, several traders opted to store gas in Ukraine to profit from the summer-winter&nbsp;spread. In September, spot gas in the TTF Dutch gas futures market traded at about 30 euros ($32.96) per megawatt-hour, while forward prices for the first quarter of 2024 stood at 49 euros.

The move was a sign that the trading community had trust in Ukraine, Timchenko said. Stored gas can only be treated as a contingency reserve in case of destruction of infrastructure and, as of today, Ukraine has met its entire&nbsp;winter&nbsp;demand with gas produced in the country.

Meanwhile, D.Trading is expanding in Europe. The company is trading energy from Kyiv, Zagreb, Poland, Switzerland and Amsterdam and is now looking to develop transition products, such as emissions trading, Timchenko said.

"I think that we've doubled our trading team over the past 12 months, we have about 100 people working in trading and analytics today," Timchenko said.

<h2>Grid synchronisation</h2>

DTEK is also working with the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSOE) to expand&nbsp;power&nbsp;transit capacity with neighbouring grids in Europe.

At present, transmission lines allow Ukraine to export as much as 2,000 megawatts of&nbsp;power&nbsp;daily, but in practice exports are usually only around 350-400 megawatts, due in part to insufficient connections and regulatory issues. Imports amount to about 1.3 gigawatts.

Regulation guiding joint auctions for&nbsp;power&nbsp;capacity at its borders is&nbsp;needed, Timchenko said.

"We hope that it can be done during the next year," he added.

Last summer, several traders opted to store gas in Ukraine to profit from the summer-winter spread. In September, spot gas in the TTF Dutch gas futures market traded at about 30 euros ($32.96) per megawatt-hour, while forward prices for the first quarter of 2024 stood at 49 euros. The move was a sign that the trading community had trust in Ukraine, Timchenko said. Stored gas can only be treated as a contingency reserve in case of destruction of infrastructure and, as of today, Ukraine has met its entire winter demand with gas produced in the country. Grid synchronisation DTEK is also working with the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSOE) to expand power transit capacity with neighbouring grids in Europe. At present, transmission lines allow Ukraine to export as much as 2,000 megawatts of power daily, but in practice exports are usually only around 350-400 megawatts, due in part to insufficient connections and regulatory issues. Imports amount to about 1.3 gigawatts. Regulation guiding joint auctions for power capacity at its borders is needed, Timchenko said. "We hope that it can be done during the next year," he added.

Looks like Cardi B is not rallying behind US President Joe Biden anymore. Upset with the US government sending millions in aid to Ukraine and Israel for their respective ongoing wars with Russia and Hamas, Cardi B said she doesn’t like America cutting budgets for its own people while sending money to other countries for their wars.&nbsp;

In an Instagram livestream, Cardi B said that she was done with Joe Biden. Cardi B whose legal name is Belcalis Almánzar, said that US domestic and foreign policies were in stark contrast as she highlighted that while the White House was helping Ukraine fight Russia and Israel fight Hamas, the New York City mayor announced a 5% municipal budget cut last week.

The mayor said that the cuts would affect schools, libraries, the New York police department and the sanitation service, among others.

The mayor warned last week that more cuts would be necessary without additional funding from Washington to manage a rise in the number of migrants in New York. It’s worth mentioning that Cardi B had helped promote Joe Biden’s candidacy as he successfully ran for the White House in 2020. Cardi B said, “I’m endorsing no presidents no more. US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday (Nov 20) that Washington's support for Kyiv was for the long haul. "The message that I bring you today, Mr President, is that the United States of America is with you, we will remain with you for the long haul," Austin told Zelensky as he paid a visit to Kyiv to reassure Ukraine on US support in its fight against Russia.

In a statement, the Pentagon said that Austin visited Ukraine to meet "with Ukrainian leaders and reinforce the staunch support of the United States for Ukraine's fight for freedom."

"He will also underscore the continued US commitment to providing Ukraine with the security assistance it needs to defend itself from Russian aggression," the statement added. This was Austin's second trip to Ukraine since Russia launched an offensive last year.

Austin also told Zelensky that under his leadership, Ukraine defended its sovereignty and has fought valiantly.&nbsp;

"You (Zelensky) have led the Ukrainian people to do things that were unimaginable to most people from the very beginning. And so we've seen grit, ingenuity. We've seen courage on the part of the Ukrainian people that has really impressed the world," he added.

Since the beginning of the conflict, the US has provided tens of billions of dollars in security aid for Ukraine and repeatedly pledged to back Kyiv for "as long as it takes."

However, hardline Republican lawmakers have opposed this assistance.

Till now, the US has been the biggest donor of military assistance to Kyiv, and a cut to American aid would be a major blow to Ukraine as it is preparing for the second winter of the war.

Last month, Austin and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged lawmakers to sustain support for Ukraine, with the US defence chief said that without Washington's support, Russian President Vladimir Putin would be successful.&nbsp;

Apart from the Ukraine, the US has also insisted that it can provide assistance to Israel in its intensifying conflict against Hamas.&nbsp;

US will remain with war-torn Ukraine for 'long haul': Pentagon chief

The Ukrainian military said on Friday (Nov 17) that its troops pushed Russian soldiers out of positions on the eastern banks of the Dnipro river in the occupied Kherson and established several bridgeheads.

The Ukrainian military said on Friday (Nov 17) that its troops pushed Russian soldiers out of positions on the eastern banks of the Dnipro river in the occupied Kherson and established several bridgeheads. Sharing a post on Facebook, the Ukrainian Marines said they had a series of successes, established several bridgeheads and conducted other operations on the river's eastern side. Russia conceded for the first time this week that Ukrainian troops had crossed the river. "Units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces managed to knock out the Russians from their positions on the left bank of the Dnipro and consolidate there," General Staff spokesperson Andriy Kovalyov said on a military channel on YouTube. "One of the main goals of this combat work is to push the enemy as far as possible from the right bank to protect the Ukrainian civilian population, in particular Kherson, from constant Russian shelling," Kovalyov said. 'Our warriors. Thank you for your strength' On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared images from the area showing the military using drones and operating on speedboats on the Dnipro. "Our warriors. Thank you for your strength, for moving forward!" President Zelensky said in a post on Telegram. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the Ukrainian military crossed the river in small groups in the summer to create an initial foothold around a railway bridge near Kherson and then sought to expand their presence in nearby villages on the east bank. Ukraine retook the city and the area around it on the western bank of the Dnipro in November last year. Both Russia and Ukraine have inflicted heavy losses on the other side during operations in the area. Ukraine braced for increased Russian strikes As the conflict rages on, Ukrainian troops are bracing for increased Russian air strikes across the country as winter approaches. On Thursday, President Zelensky warned that Russia was likely stockpiling missiles to hit energy facilities over the coming months. "My estimation is that they are accumulating (missiles), but that they don't have many more missiles compared to what they previously had," Zelensky told reporters referring to last year's attacks which left millions of Ukrainians suffering debilitating blackouts. Ukrainian troops secure several bridgeheads along Dnipro river, push out Russian soldiers

Ukraine has claimed its troops have crossed the vast River Dnipro into occupied areas of the Kherson region. A top Ukrainian official also said that they have established a strong foothold on the eastern bank of the river, which divides the frontline in southern Ukraine.&nbsp;

The advancement is seen as a crucial point in overcoming one of Moscow's most significant strategic barriers in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.&nbsp;

The war-torn nation said that the troops are operating in small groups. Kviy added that it had dispatched more troops to stop Russia, which conceded on Wednesday. Zelensky said it had been a "difficult day" for Kyiv due to deadly Russian strikes in the east of the country.&nbsp;

The development was confirmed by Russia as it said on Wednesday that for the first time, some Ukrainian troops had established positions on the Moscow-held side of the Dnipro River.&nbsp;

Vladimir Saldo, who is the Moscow-installed head of Ukraine's Kherson region, said in a post on Telegram that "small groups" of Ukrainian soldiers were stretched along the eastern bank of the river, and had been "blocked" in the tiny village of Krynky.&nbsp;

"Our additional forces have now been deployed. The enemy is blocked in Krynky. A fiery hell has been arranged for them: bombs, rockets, heavy flamethrower systems, artillery shells and drones are flying at them," Saldo said.

Ukraine claims strong foothold on eastern bank of Dnipro river Kherson city

A Russian artist who used and even replaced supermarket tags with messages against Russia's Ukraine invasion is awaiting the verdict of the court in a case against her. The verdict is expected to come on Thursday (November 16). The state prosecutor has asked for an eight-year jail sentence for her.

The case against Alexandra Skochilenko (33) is being viewed as part of a crackdown on dissent against Russia's "special military operation' in Ukraine. The crackdown has led to almost 20,000 people being detained and more than 800 criminal cases.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 last year. Russia has since then made its laws stricter in an attempt to silence critics of war. Russian President Vladimir Putin has chosen to project the Ukraine war as an existential struggle with the West.

Skochilenko, who is an artist and a musician also known as Sasha, had admitted that she replaced price tags in a supermarket in St Petersburg on March 31, 2022, with pieces of paper urging an end to the war. She has already spent more than a year and a half in prison. She denies the formal charge against her that she knowingly spread false information about the Russian army.

Human rights group Amnesty International has declared that Skochilenko is "a prisoner of conscience" which means someone who is in jail just because of who they are or what they believe.

Yana Nepopvinnova, one of Skochilenko's lawyers, told the court on Monday that she should be acquitted.

"You should never punish people for thinking and feeling differently. You should never punish people for objective criticism of the authorities and their decisions," she said.
