Russia is warning of 'chaos' in global food markets after a major Ukrainian attack disrupted grain terminals at the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. The strikes are threatening a crucial export route at a time when the war is already putting pressure on global supplies. Ukraine reportedly sent an offer to Russia for both sides to halt attacks on civilian targets in the Black Sea. Ukraine's offer was reportedly transmitted to Russia via a third party, and it has yet to receive a response. Russia also launched a major overnight drone attack across Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia sent 133 drones into Ukrainian airspace and that Ukrainian air defences intercepted 111 of them. Satellite imagery shows damage at the grain facilities and a nearby naval base.

Ukraine's security service described the operation as strategically significant and said its forces used drones and missiles to strike the Novorossiysk naval base. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said two frigates, a large landing ship, a corvette and other vessels were hit. The attacks are part of a wider campaign by both Russia and Ukraine against each other's infrastructure. The military escalation is now putting further pressure on one of the world's most important grain corridors. Novorossiysk is one of Russia's main grain export hubs, making the disruption significant for global agricultural markets. Together, Russia and Ukraine account for nearly one-third of global wheat exports. Black Sea grain shipments have already fallen by more than 40 percent compared with a year ago and the latest attacks come during this year's harvest. Ukraine is trying to move more grain by rail, road and the Danube River. But those routes can handle only about half the normal Black Sea volume while drought-driven low water levels are creating additional constraints on the Danube. The disruption is already feeding into commodity markets. Wheat prices have risen nearly 25 percent since the start of the year reaching their highest level in two years. Russian wheat exports fell sharply in July posting their weakest performance since 2017. Ukraine's grain exports have dropped by nearly one-third. As repeated attacks on ports and commercial vessels disrupt shipments, daily tanker operating costs have climbed above 300 thousand dollars, forcing several shipping companies to suspend Black Sea operations. That means higher transport costs, slower exports, and tighter global grain supplies. The pressure comes as wheat production is also being hit by severe drought across major producing regions in the United States, Europe, Australia and parts of South America. The U.S.D.A. expects wheat production among the world's largest exporters to decline this season while available export stocks are also shrinking. As Russia and Ukraine continue targeting each other's export infrastructure, exports from Odesa's ports are largely halted leaving many Ukrainian farmers with few options to sell their harvest. Agriculture accounts for nearly 60 percent of Ukraine's export revenues and industry representatives say the blockade is adding to the strain on the wartime economy. Experts caution that the combination of war climate-related production losses and rising shipping costs is increasing uncertainty over global food supplies, inflation and trade flows in the months ahead.

Three of Russia's largest grain terminals at Novorossiysk have reportedly halted operations after the Ukrainian attack damaged key loading and unloading infrastructure. According to reports, grain shipments from the port are currently impossible. Satellite imagery shows damage at the grain facilities and a nearby naval base.

The military escalation is putting further pressure on one of the world's most important grain corridors. Novorossiysk is one of Russia's main grain export hubs, making the disruption significant. Together, Russia and Ukraine account for nearly one-third of global wheat exports.

The Russia-Ukraine war has witnessed another major escalation after Ukraine carried out an overnight strike on Novorossiysk, a key Russian Black Sea port and naval base.

According to Ukrainian officials, the operation involved missiles, aerial drones and sea drones, targeting Russian air-defence systems and port infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the operation as unique and said it targeted what he called a major remaining stronghold of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

The attack reportedly damaged several buildings in Novorossiysk, including schools and a college, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency.

Russia’s southern Krasnodar region also came under a major drone attack, with the regional governor saying several hundred drones were involved.

Meanwhile, fuel shortages are reportedly emerging in Moscow and surrounding areas, with some petrol stations experiencing shortages. Ukraine has also accused Russia of intensifying strikes on fuel and logistical infrastructure, including petrol stations.

Elsewhere, Ukrainian authorities reported Russian drone attacks in Zaporizhzhia, while Zelenskyy warned that Russia could be preparing for another military mobilisation. Moscow has denied the claim.

Zelenskyy also accused Russia of using North Korean ballistic missiles in overnight attacks on Ukraine, including strikes targeting Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia.

Russia's Ministry of Defence has merged five irregular combat formations into a single new brigade, Ukrainian Volunteer Spetsnaz, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), in a move that Ukrainian officials and independent monitors say formalises a years-long practice of pushing Ukrainian prisoners of war into frontline combat roles. The Russian MoD's Volunteer Corps announced this week that it had folded the Maxim Krivonos and Alexei Berest battalions, along with the Alexander Matrosov, Martyn Pushkar, and Slobodskoy detachments, into a single unit it calls the "first Ukrainian Volunteer Spetsnaz Brigade." ISW, which tracks daily developments in the war, reported the consolidation on August 6, noting that all five constituent units are believed to draw their manpower from Ukrainian POWs and soldiers who allegedly defected to Russian forces. Notably, Russian military bloggers did not mention that the brigade depends on captured Ukrainian personnel units officially, and maintains the "volunteer" branding. Ukraine's Acting Defence Minister has outlined Kyiv's evolving military strategy against Russia, stressing that Ukraine cannot match Russia "punch for punch" and must instead rely on asymmetric warfare. In an interview, he said Ukraine's deep strikes are designed to impose greater costs on Russia than they cost Ukraine to execute. He also emphasized the importance of logistics, battlefield resource management, and expanding domestic defence production, including Patriot interceptor missiles.

The acting minister further expressed confidence that relations between Kyiv and Washington will develop into a long-term strategic partnership, with Ukraine contributing valuable experience from modern warfare. His remarks come amid leadership changes within Ukraine's defence establishment following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's cabinet reshuffle.

Ukraine and Iran have signalled a willingness to prevent further tensions after a recent strike in the Caspian Sea, with the two countries’ foreign ministers holding what Kyiv described as a “frank” conversation on Tuesday (July 28). According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, he told his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi that both sides should avoid “unnecessary escalation” following the incident, which has strained relations between Kyiv and Tehran. Also read: What did Donald Trump say about Guantanamo at Lindsey Graham's funeral? Viral joke from eulogy explained The diplomatic exchange came after Iranian officials sharply criticised Ukraine over an attack on what Tehran said was an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea. Ukraine said over the weekend that its drones had struck two Russian vessels transporting military cargo in the Caspian Sea, adding that both ships had departed from Iran and were heading to a Russian port. Iran disputed that account, saying one of its commercial ships carrying iron cargo had been hit, leaving one Iranian seafarer dead and three others injured. Sybiha said he made clear during the call that Ukraine’s military actions were directed solely at defending the country against Russia’s invasion. The Iran conflict risks expanding beyond West Asia after Tehran accused Ukraine of attacking an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea. Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the incident as an act of aggression, claiming the strike killed one sailor and injured another, while warning that it would defend its national interests. The accusation comes after Ukraine claimed it carried out long-range strikes against Russian military-linked assets in the Caspian Sea. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces targeted vessels allegedly involved in military cargo shipments and also accused Russia of providing satellite intelligence to Iran to support attacks on U.S. bases and Gulf facilities. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said he trusted Russia and China not to assist Iran in the conflict but warned that involvement would have serious consequences

Ukraine has launched one of its deepest attacks yet, striking Russia's largest refinery in Siberia, nearly 2,500 km from the border, dealing a major blow to Moscow's fuel infrastructure. The attack comes as Russia intensifies missile and drone strikes against Ukraine, with President Vladimir Putin warning of even stronger retaliation.

At the same time, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to escalate as the United States and Iran exchange strikes for a third consecutive night. Rising attacks on energy infrastructure and commercial shipping have pushed global oil prices sharply higher, raising fears of inflation, supply disruptions, and a possible global economic slowdown.

Ukraine has reportedly launched one of its largest aerial assaults on Russia, with claims of around 660 drones targeting Moscow and other strategic locations.

The massive wave of attacks has intensified the ongoing conflict, prompting Russian-occupied Crimea to declare a state of emergency amid heightened security concerns.

Production history of Moscow oil refinery
The affected facility, the largest oil refinery in the Moscow region, processed 11.6 million tonnes of crude oil in 2024 and produced 2.9 million tonnes of petrol and 3.2 million tonnes of diesel, according to the latest available figures. Official statistics, social media reports and Reuters estimates indicate that drone attacks on Russian refineries have doubled since the beginning of 2026. These strikes have led to partial or complete shutdowns at several processing facilities, reducing the output of petrol, diesel and jet fuel. The refinery operated by Gazprom Neft supplies the Moscow region, which until now had largely avoided the fuel supply disruptions seen in more than a dozen other Russian regions. Also read: EXPLAINED: How 'good behaviour' law will impact immigrants in Sweden and why it is so controversial
