As part of years-long attempts to meddle in British politics, Russia's intelligence services have targeted prominent British lawmakers, civil workers, and journalists with cyberespionage, the British government announced on Thursday. According to the Foreign Office, Russia's FSB agency was in charge of a number of ongoing cyberespionage operations in the United Kingdom from at least 2015 until this year. These operations included targeting lawmakers from various political parties and selectively leaking and amplifying sensitive information to further Russian interests.

<p>Former British interior minister Suella Braverman, who was recently sacked, slammed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his leadership on Tuesday (Nov 14) in letter that she shared publicly, which also urged the prime minister to change course to avoid election defeat. Sunak vs Johnson: The spat takes new turn with latest war of words

<p>Boris Johnson, the former prime minister of the United Kingdom, has been referred to police by the Cabinet Office, media reports on Tuesday said. The officials reportedly have claimed that Johnson broke coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown rules by hosting family and friends at Chequers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A government ministry handed two police forces material about alleged Covid lockdown breaches.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Cabinet Office looks after the operation of government and it said that it had made a referral to police based on information discovered while preparing submissions for a public inquiry into the pandemic.</p>

<p>This development means Johnson is facing further potential police investigations into the "Partygate" scandal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Metropolitan Police in London said that it was "assessing" fresh material received in the last week regarding "potential breaches" of Covid guidelines in Downing Street between June 2020 and May 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The news was first published by The Times, which stated that the Thames Valley Police were&nbsp;also analysing new evidence related to possible rule-breaking at Chequers, which is the prime minister's country estate outside London.&nbsp;</p>

Boris Johnson, the former prime minister of the United Kingdom, has been referred to police by the Cabinet Office, media reports on Tuesday said. The officials reportedly have claimed that Johnson broke coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown rules by hosting family and friends at Chequers. A government ministry handed two police forces material about alleged Covid lockdown breaches. The Cabinet Office looks after the operation of government and it said that it had made a referral to police based on information discovered while preparing submissions for a public inquiry into the pandemic. This development means Johnson is facing further potential police investigations into the "Partygate" scandal. The Metropolitan Police in London said that it was "assessing" fresh material received in the last week regarding "potential breaches" of Covid guidelines in Downing Street between June 2020 and May 2021. The news was first published by The Times, which stated that the Thames Valley Police were also analysing new evidence related to possible rule-breaking at Chequers, which is the prime minister's country estate outside London. There's a concept in Hinduism called dharma, which roughly translates into duty and that's how I was raised. It was about doing the things that were expected of you and trying to do the right thing." The British prime minister said that even though the job appeared to be a "nightmare", he felt that he could be the "best person" to make a difference at that moment. Sunak has often spoken about his Hindu faith giving him strength. He swore his oath of allegiance on being elected member of Parliament in the House of Commons on the ‘Bhagavad Gita’. ‘There’s a concept in Hinduism...’: Rishi Sunak felt it was his ‘dharma’ to take over as British PM

<p>The United Kingdom last month claimed that the government has secured new free trade deals with over 70 countries since 2016 (since Brexit). In a Twitter post, politician Michael Gove also claimed via an infographic that the trade is over £800bn worth of new free trade.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, a statistics watchdog in the UK has called out the Conservatives, stating that claim is misleading.&nbsp;</p>

UK PM Sunak takes a 'screeching U-turn,' announces he will attend COP27 after all

<p>In a BBC broadcast, a word cloud on new UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak included&nbsp;foul and swear words to describe the Indian-origin premier. The clip of the same went viral online.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Tuesday, Sunak was appointed as the prime minister by the British monarch King Charles III as he scripted history by becoming the first British-Asian to hold the post. A practising Hindu, the 42-year-old Sunak is the nation's youngest leader since 1812.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But there are certainly mixed opinions on Sunak becoming the UK prime minister—some racist remarks have also been made. A video of a British radio show is going viral in which a caller is explaining why a non-white person becoming the PM of the UK is not good.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The caller said: "Can you imagine me becoming the Prime Minister of Pakistan? People of England would like to see someone who looks like them."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, this gaffe by UK's national broadcaster is quite concerning. In the word cloud, BBC missed some swear words when they appeared on TV screens during its coverage of Downing Street developments.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Britons were asked about their opinion on Sunak becoming prime minister. It appeared when BBC presenter Joanna Gosling asked: "How would you describe Rishi Sunak in one word?"&nbsp;</p>

<p>The word cloud, which was created by polling research company Savanta ComRes, contained the words "rich", "capable", "okay", "good", "clever", etc. But some swear words were also displayed.</p>

<p>Apart from some positive words like "smart", "intelligent", "safe" and "strong", the word cloud also had words like "boring", "slimy", "idiot", "backstabbing" and "liar".&nbsp;</p>

'Unbelievable scenes': A 'word cloud' in BBC's broadcast used foul words for Rishi Sunak

<p>Rishi Sunak, if you were to describe him as a social-political-cultural conundrum, would fit Sir Winston Churchill's famous description of Russia: "Riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma".</p>

<p>Argumentative Indians and xenophobic Britons are furiously debating the colonial-era British prime minister's notorious quote about Indians being unable to govern themselves in the backdrop of the Indian-origin Sunak taking over the job once held by Churchill in similarly challenging times, with good reason. It is perhaps best to look at the 42-year-old former hedge fund manager as a Rubik's Cube for grown-ups.</p>

<p>If you look at him as a devout Hindu taking over a British office with a sacred thread on after a childhood of work at the local temple, he is decidedly Hindu -- as those sympathetic to current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP would say.</p>

<p><strong>Watch | Gravitas: Rishi Sunak's plan for strengthening India-UK ties</strong></p>

</div>
<a class="close-mark close-div" href="#" id="jqclosemark">×</a></div>

<p>If you look at the fact that Sunak's parental roots are in East Africa, as a Twitter quip goes, he is as Kenyan as former US president Barack Obama. If you see his partially ancestral town of Gujranwala, that would be Pakistan. If geography is history (and one in which the British played their own part) and you shift your focus to Sunak's Bangalore wedding, he is modern India's own son-in-law by virtue of his marriage to Akshata, daughter of technology tycoon NR Narayana Murthy. She is still an Indian citizen. If his now discarded Green Card is any indication, the former Goldman Sachs analyst is an almost-American.</p>

<p>Look beyond all that and Sunak is a true-blue upper crust Yorkshireman after being born in humbler environs of Southampton. Having connected the extreme dots of England via Winchester school and America's Stanford University, he is a true Briton -- a modern Briton at that, one comfortable with multiculturalism at political levels even as the UK retains shades of a former white colonial power with a xenophobic streak that saw it Brexiting out of the European Union -- led by the likes of Conservative Sunak himself.</p>

<p>Long before Sunak became a topic in the UK for his Indian origin, there was England's cricket captain Nasser Hussain, born in Chennai to a Tamil Muslim father and an English mother. He turned out to be one of England's most respected captains of all time and played against India rather well. He was very English, though he admitted he was "proud of his Indian roots."</p>

<p>Where does all this leave Sunak's Indianness?</p>

<p>Honestly, this is all too complicated but I would put my money on Sunak the Brit over any other identity at this moment when his success seems to have so many fathers. He is Tory to the boot and elected from a county that for too long shunned cricketers from outside England until India's own master blaster Sachin Tendulkar came along to break a glass ceiling in cricket's land of birth. Sunak is no diversity-rider in vote or thought and courts a love of meritocracy his father-in-law wore on his sleeves as the co-founder of Infosys.</p>

<p>However, a rockstar politician in Britain would not be the same as a real rockstar, right? So, why not look at a real one --- and it would seem Freddie Mercury from India fits the bill a lot better than Dishy Rishi if you were to look at his upbringing and influences.</p>

<p>The Queen singer is now a legend thanks to an Oscar-winning biopic from Hollywood. A hard look would reveal he has striking similarities -- and a telling divergence --- when one compares him with Sunak for his Indian-ness.</p>

<p>Farokh Bomsi Balsara was born in Zanzibar, and hence takes a spicy East African connection with Sunak but he spent his formative high school years at Panchgani in Maharashtra. He acknowledged India's own nightingale Lata Mangeshkar as his biggest inspiration for singing.</p>

<p>I cannot recall Sunak acknowledging any Indian influence such as Mahatma Gandhi, who seems to have inspired Martin Luther King Jr or Nelson Mandela more. As Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer, however, he released a Gandhi commemorative coin. In any toss for Indianness with this coin, however, I would think aapro dikra (Parsee Gujarati for our boy) Freddie would come up heads.</p>

<p>I still recall stumbling into a UK-sponsored Freddie Mercury memorial exhibition in Mumbai a couple of decades ago and coming home with a valuable brochure of his childhood photos including one where he is given a sacred thread&nbsp; (Kushti).&nbsp; He is said to have once remarked that his origin was Persian (since his Zoroastrian ancestors fled what is now Iran in the 7th Century to flee Islamic conquest), but he is as Persian as a jalebi, the sweet dish that is an Indian staple though it is recognized to be of Persian origin.</p>

<p>Mercury's songs include Bicycle Race, inspired clearly by his Panchgani schoolday race -- of which there is a lovely picture.</p>

<p>Like Sunak, Freddie Mercury has a personal, cultural and professional track record that touches three continents -- and I would put my money on Farokh as more Indian, if you were to go by influences.</p>

<p>If Freddie was famously mercurial, UK must hope that Sunak, living up to the Sanskrit translation of his first name, will be sage. If that helps, Sunak is a Hindu Brit, Mercury an Indo-Briton. Former Beatles guitarist George Harrison was English and white -- but died chanting Hare Krishna after embracing Hinduism. We live in a rich, complicated world.</p>

<p>But what does all that go to prove? Very little.</p>

<p>This is not colonial-era Britain that a lot of right-wing Hindu Indian politicos would seem to be still dissecting. Nor is it same India that Sunak's ancestors left.&nbsp; Much water has flown down the Indus, Thames, Ganges, whatever...and what remains is the eternal exchange of ideas that argumentative India has always been famous for. &nbsp;</p>

Rishi Sunak, if you were to describe him as a social-political-cultural conundrum, would fit Sir Winston Churchill's famous description of Russia: "Riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma".

Rishi Sunak, if you were to describe him as a social-political-cultural conundrum, would fit Sir Winston Churchill's famous description of Russia: "Riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma". Argumentative Indians and xenophobic Britons are furiously debating the colonial-era British prime minister's notorious quote about Indians being unable to govern themselves in the backdrop of the Indian-origin Sunak taking over the job once held by Churchill in similarly challenging times, with good reason. It is perhaps best to look at the 42-year-old former hedge fund manager as a Rubik's Cube for grown-ups. If you look at him as a devout Hindu taking over a British office with a sacred thread on after a childhood of work at the local temple, he is decidedly Hindu -- as those sympathetic to current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP would say. Watch | Gravitas: Rishi Sunak's plan for strengthening India-UK ties × If you look at the fact that Sunak's parental roots are in East Africa, as a Twitter quip goes, he is as Kenyan as former US president Barack Obama. If his now discarded Green Card is any indication, the former Goldman Sachs analyst is an almost-American. Also Read | 'Proud of him': How Narayana Murthy responded to son-in-law Rishi Sunak becoming UK PM Look beyond all that and Sunak is a true-blue upper crust Yorkshireman after being born in humbler environs of Southampton. Having connected the extreme dots of England via Winchester school and America's Stanford University, he is a true Briton -- a modern Briton at that, one comfortable with multiculturalism at political levels even as the UK retains shades of a former white colonial power with a xenophobic streak that saw it Brexiting out of the European Union -- led by the likes of Conservative Sunak himself. Long before Sunak became a topic in the UK for his Indian origin, there was England's cricket captain Nasser Hussain, born in Chennai to a Tamil Muslim father and an English mother. He turned out to be one of England's most respected captains of all time and played against India rather well. He was very English, though he admitted he was "proud of his Indian roots." Also Read | Kohinoor, Churchill and Ashish Nehra: Rishi Sunak's appointment as new UK PM sparks meme fest Where does all this leave Sunak's Indianness? Honestly, this is all too complicated but I would put my money on Sunak the Brit over any other identity at this moment when his success seems to have so many fathers. He is Tory to the boot and elected from a county that for too long shunned cricketers from outside England until India's own master blaster Sachin Tendulkar came along to break a glass ceiling in cricket's land of birth. Sunak is no diversity-rider in vote or thought and courts a love of meritocracy his father-in-law wore on his sleeves as the co-founder of Infosys. However, a rockstar politician in Britain would not be the same as a real rockstar, right? So, why not look at a real one --- and it would seem Freddie Mercury from India fits the bill a lot better than Dishy Rishi if you were to look at his upbringing and influences. The Queen singer is now a legend thanks to an Oscar-winning biopic from Hollywood. A hard look would reveal he has striking similarities -- and a telling divergence --- when one compares him with Sunak for his Indian-ness. Farokh Bomsi Balsara was born in Zanzibar, and hence takes a spicy East African connection with Sunak but he spent his formative high school years at Panchgani in Maharashtra. He acknowledged India's own nightingale Lata Mangeshkar as his biggest inspiration for singing. I cannot recall Sunak acknowledging any Indian influence such as Mahatma Gandhi, who seems to have inspired Martin Luther King Jr or Nelson Mandela more. As Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer, however, he released a Gandhi commemorative coin. In any toss for Indianness with this coin, however, I would think aapro dikra (Parsee Gujarati for our boy) Freddie would come up heads. I still recall stumbling into a UK-sponsored Freddie Mercury memorial exhibition in Mumbai a couple of decades ago and coming home with a valuable brochure of his childhood photos including one where he is given a sacred thread (Kushti). He is said to have once remarked that his origin was Persian (since his Zoroastrian ancestors fled what is now Iran in the 7th Century to flee Islamic conquest), but he is as Persian as a jalebi, the sweet dish that is an Indian staple though it is recognized to be of Persian origin. Check out | When Cameron did a Nostradamus. Rishi Sunak becoming UK prime minister was predicted long ago - Watch Mercury's songs include Bicycle Race, inspired clearly by his Panchgani schoolday race -- of which there is a lovely picture. Like Sunak, Freddie Mercury has a personal, cultural and professional track record that touches three continents -- and I would put my money on Farokh as more Indian, if you were to go by influences. If Freddie was famously mercurial, UK must hope that Sunak, living up to the Sanskrit translation of his first name, will be sage. If that helps, Sunak is a Hindu Brit, Mercury an Indo-Briton. Former Beatles guitarist George Harrison was English and white -- but died chanting Hare Krishna after embracing Hinduism. We live in a rich, complicated world. But what does all that go to prove? Very little. This is not colonial-era Britain that a lot of right-wing Hindu Indian politicos would seem to be still dissecting. Nor is it same India that Sunak's ancestors left. Much water has flown down the Indus, Thames, Ganges, whatever...and what remains is the eternal exchange of ideas that argumentative India has always been famous for. If there is the last word, it must go to the last stanza from Freddie Mercury's most famous Bohemian Rhapsody: "Nothing really matters....anyway the wind blows." 'Warmest congratulations': India wishes incoming UK prime minister Rishi Sunak

<p>British politician Rishi Sunak was Monday (October 24) elected Conservative leader and will become the next prime minister, after rival Penny Mordaunt failed to secure the necessary 100 nominations from her fellow MPs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Rishi Sunak is therefore elected as leader of the Conservative Party," senior backbencher Graham Brady said, as Mordaunt vowed her "full support" for the former finance minister.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sunak earned praises for shoring up the economy during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. But his refusal initially to authorise more support over a surging cost-of-living crisis has hurt his popularity.&nbsp;</p>

British politician Rishi Sunak was Monday (October 24) elected Conservative leader and will become the next prime minister, after rival Penny Mordaunt failed to secure the necessary 100 nominations from her fellow MPs. "Rishi Sunak is therefore elected as leader of the Conservative Party," senior backbencher Graham Brady said, as Mordaunt vowed her "full support" for the former finance minister. Sunak earned praises for shoring up the economy during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. But his refusal initially to authorise more support over a surging cost-of-living crisis has hurt his popularity. IN PICS | UK's Rishi Sunak joins Indian-origin world leaders. UK finance minister has no desire to succeed Truss, says more political instability would be 'worst thing'

<p>If there is such a thing as a perfect lack of timing, there must be a competition in that sphere in the United Kingdom between two of its most prominent ladies: Prime Minister Liz Truss (who holds the office as this is written but may not hang in there by the time of publication if critics are to be believed), and Home Secretary Suella Braverman (whose love of Britain seems far in excess of King Charles III, to paraphrase the old English saying about one being more loyal than the regent).&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is not an algebra column, but you need to solve the simultaneous equations of these two political variables to get a hang of the country whose economy is in shambles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Puns and punchlines abound in the quest for an accurate description of the situation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The venerable Economist magazine has spoken of "Truss deficit' as markets pounded the pound and the IMF grumbled about the large-scale tax cuts her weeks-old government delivered before reversing about half of it with the sacking of short-lived finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng. The chancellor's arrival was as much steeped in cluelessness as his departure.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I, for one, describe the Indian-origin Suella as a brave woman for declaiming that Indians tend to overstay their visas even as a free trade agreement (FTA) was being worked out between the former colony and its erstwhile coloniser. This could well be a self-goal because India can be a veritable asset for the post-Brexit UK trying to reinvent its economy from the mess created by London's exit from the European Union -- among other things.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Foolhardiness is another way to describe foot-in-the-mouth courage in angels-fear-to-tread situations. This brave woman called Ms Braverman is a sideshow in a larger Truss circus. It may be time to speak of clowns in the British jewel&nbsp;instead of Indian jewels in the British Crown.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I am no big expert on the details of Britain's complicated economy, but I do know that Brexit was caused by an existential crisis in a country whose elites&nbsp;are/were steeped in ideological confusion. What the&nbsp;follow-up required was a fine balancing act. What Ms Truss delivered was a bookish off-with-the-tax eagerness that reminded one of the infamous queen in Alice's Wonderland. Balancing act, balancing budgets: same thing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rishi Sunak, playing a good cop in Conservative Party, must be sitting in a corner trying to suppress a giggle because he is having an I-told-you-so-moment with respect to the woman who defeated him in party polls to become the PM. He has to first look serious and committed to Britain and its greatness to retain his chance of getting the chair he missed sitting on. But his supporters are making all the required noises on his behalf.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Without us stepping into the details, we can say Brexit was a lot about UK feeling uncomfortable with competition from immigrant citizens from the European Union that caused a close-call verdict. Only 51.8% of Britons in the 2016 referendum favoured the exit. Any sensible country would have had second thoughts because only 72% of eligible British citizens took part in that vote. But in the UK, promises are to be delivered in letter, not spirit. That has resulted in a procession of Brexiteer PMs that does not seem to end: Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss may be next? Truss had to deliver on the Tories'&nbsp;tax-cut promises, which turned out to be a case of cutting one's own nose to spite the face.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Xenophobia, a smug dislike of competition at the workplace, colonial-era hubris and plain mood swings seem to have enabled votes in favour of Brexit. But what stares us in the face is the fall in investment and productivity in the UK economy that is at the heart of the crisis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Market fetishists believe in low fiscal deficits as a puller of foreign investment -- and the Truss tax cuts upset the fiscal balance for that. This is because right-wing orthodoxy believes that lower taxes lead to higher efficiency, less bureaucracy and the creation of wealth and capital that fuel more jobs. Things are not so simple. And even if true, that happens in the long run. A more pragmatic Tory like Sunak likes to have safety nets to protect the poorer sections (a completely relative term in Toryspeak).</p>

<p>That brings us to Ms Braverman. In order to boost productivity, Britain needs skilled workers who actually look forward to work, and India with its growing talent pool, is a good hunting ground for that. You know the basics: Indians are not usually tainted by tags of Islamic extremism (hence safe), they have the colonial-era English language comfort, and last but not least, UK universities routinely make Indian students employment-ready for Britain. In such a context, Ms Braverman saying what she said was ill-timed, ill-conceived, and yet factually accurate.</p>

<p>This then is the horrible truth of Britain's crisis. Two women did the correct thing that was simply not appropriate for the moment. Ms Truss went for tax cuts instead of a toil-and-tears speech and Ms Braverman seems to have confused the ubiquitous tourist or family visa seeker with the much-wooed Indian engineer or technologist -- with no clarification on the apparent stereotyping. Indian techies can boost British productivity at optimal costs while foreign investors appreciate red carpets that carry no banana peels -- which is what Trussonomics seems to have laid on UK's intended road to an economic rebound.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the core of Tory economics is the need for market and social stability that Truss has lost sight of. At the core of ongoing FTA negotiations is the need to distinguish between productive business and unwanted immigration that Ms Braverman does not seem to be conscious of.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As wounds are licked and blames are apportioned in Britain's cantankerous democratic discourse, the simultaneous equations of the two ladies in question need to be solved by keeping in mind a simple rule of the game called democracy. You can't keep voters, financiers, nationalists and foreign investors all happy at the same time. This means taking one run at a time instead of trying to hit the ball out of the park. The latter would be risky baseball fit for America's vast fields, not a cold, beleaguered island. What Ms Truss and Ms Braverman have done, oh, well, is simply not cricket.&nbsp;</p>

Cricket lessons from Truss mess in UK: Mistimed strokes lead to catches, losing matches

<p>Battling to salvage her few weeks old government, British PM Liz Truss on Friday undertook some major steps, including a change of the finance minister, to placate the nation even as reports suggest that fellow Tory leaders seek to dethrone her.</p>

<p>The new government's intention to cut taxes and pay it with billions more in borrowing, announced on September 23, set off a financial upheaval that culminated in today's turbulence in the UK.</p>

<p>According to AFP, the embattled leader dropped her main economic proposal and declared that she will stick with the Boris Johnson government's intention to increase corporate profits tax after previously changing her mind about lowering income tax rates for the top earners.</p>

<p>With conservatives allegedly plotting her demise, the Tory leader on Friday sacked Kwasi Kwarteng as chancellor of the exchequer for implementing her own agenda. Many have come out and said that the ex-chancellor was used as the "fall guy".</p>
