The former chancellor has put himself forward for the second time in a matter of months after the extraordinary resignation of Truss on Thursday, just&nbsp;44 days into her premiership.&nbsp;

Sunak is storming ahead in the contest with the backing of enough Tory MPs and if he does manage to win the contest, it would mark a huge turnaround for the MP for Richmond, North Yorks.&nbsp;

Pitted against Truss, he was castigated by Tory MPs for being too gloomy after he warned that Liz’s promises of monster tax cuts would tank the economy and send mortgage costs soaring.

Besides, voters had railed against his mega wealth, as his wife is a billionaire, said to be richer than the King.&nbsp;

UK Home Secretary Grant Shapps has backed Sunak in the contest. Taking to his official Twitter account,&nbsp;Shapps said, "We need someone who can provide stability and proven economic competence in these challenging times, and @RishiSunak is that person."

"That's why I'm backing him in the Conservative leadership contest," Shapps added.&nbsp;

Britain's former interior minister&nbsp;Suella&nbsp;Braverman also supported Sunak. In a column, titled "Rishi Sunak is the only candidate that fits the bill for prime minister", to The Telegraph,&nbsp;Braverman wrote: "I have backed Boris from the start... But we are in dire straits now. We need unity, stability and efficiency."&nbsp;

According to reports, Braverman offered to resign after admitting to accidentally leaking national security details.&nbsp;

"I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign," she wrote in a barely coded dig at Truss, whose disastrous mini-budget sparked financial turmoil. Braverman also talked of "concerns about the direction of this government". She even accused it of breaking manifesto pledges.&nbsp;

Braverman's departure, the sacking of chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng last Friday and a U-turn on most economic policies now mean that the PM is barely holding on to her seat.&nbsp;

British newspapers directly spoke of Truss's vulnerable position, using words like "utter chaos", "more turmoil", "broken"&nbsp;and "Truss on the brink".

A Conservative MP, speaking to BBC, said Liz Truss's position is "wholly untenable" and she needs to stand down "today".

Crispin Blunt said Truss should know that she needs to go and that she shouldn't have put herself up for the post in the first place.&nbsp;

The obvious choice. Sunak and Truss had a neck-to-neck competition for the Tory leadership just about a month back.&nbsp;

He has the added advantage of being proven right. During campaigning Sunak repeatedly warned that cutting too many taxes too soon would be dangerous for the economy. This was portrayed by Truss and her followers as "the over-cautious voice of a discredited Treasury orthodoxy". But now, Sunak's concerns have come true, which makes him appear like the safer choice for a leader.

Conservatives have reportedly been discussing replacing Truss with the joint forces of Sunak and Mordaunt.

This is a name that not many would expect. While in office just a month or so back, Johnson faced a flurry of scandals, but he still has his share of supporters and a "resurrection" just might happen. As per a Guardian analysis, He had a core of supporters who felt Johnson's departure over the scandals was unfair and their numbers are sure to have grown "as Tory MPs and members grasp for anything that could rescue the party from electoral oblivion".

The defence secretary, much like Mordaunt is "getting on quietly with the day job as the chaos rages around him, with the same arguable increase in reputation, even by default," writes Peter Walker for Guardian.

Wallace was seen as a successor to Johnson and is a favourite among Tory members.

<h2>Jeremy Hunt</h2>

As Sky News puts it upon being called in to replace Kwasi Kwarteng, Hunt is currently widely seen as the most powerful figure in the government.

However, Hunt himself doesn't think Truss being replaced now is a good idea.&nbsp;

"The worst thing for that would be more political instability at the top - another protracted leadership campaign," he told BBC during an interview on Sunday.

Without us stepping into the details, we can say Brexit was a lot about UK feeling uncomfortable with competition from immigrant citizens from the European Union that caused a close-call verdict. Only 51.8% of Britons in the 2016 referendum favoured the exit. Any sensible country would have had second thoughts because only 72% of eligible British citizens took part in that vote. But in the UK, promises are to be delivered in letter, not spirit. That has resulted in a procession of Brexiteer PMs that does not seem to end: Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss may be next? Truss had to deliver on the Tories'&nbsp;tax-cut promises, which turned out to be a case of cutting one's own nose to spite the face.&nbsp;

Xenophobia, a smug dislike of competition at the workplace, colonial-era hubris and plain mood swings seem to have enabled votes in favour of Brexit. But what stares us in the face is the fall in investment and productivity in the UK economy that is at the heart of the crisis.&nbsp;

Market fetishists believe in low fiscal deficits as a puller of foreign investment -- and the Truss tax cuts upset the fiscal balance for that. This is because right-wing orthodoxy believes that lower taxes lead to higher efficiency, less bureaucracy and the creation of wealth and capital that fuel more jobs. Things are not so simple. And even if true, that happens in the long run. A more pragmatic Tory like Sunak likes to have safety nets to protect the poorer sections (a completely relative term in Toryspeak).

That brings us to Ms Braverman. In order to boost productivity, Britain needs skilled workers who actually look forward to work, and India with its growing talent pool, is a good hunting ground for that. You know the basics: Indians are not usually tainted by tags of Islamic extremism (hence safe), they have the colonial-era English language comfort, and last but not least, UK universities routinely make Indian students employment-ready for Britain. In such a context, Ms Braverman saying what she said was ill-timed, ill-conceived, and yet factually accurate.

This then is the horrible truth of Britain's crisis. Two women did the correct thing that was simply not appropriate for the moment. Ms Truss went for tax cuts instead of a toil-and-tears speech and Ms Braverman seems to have confused the ubiquitous tourist or family visa seeker with the much-wooed Indian engineer or technologist -- with no clarification on the apparent stereotyping. Indian techies can boost British productivity at optimal costs while foreign investors appreciate red carpets that carry no banana peels -- which is what Trussonomics seems to have laid on UK's intended road to an economic rebound.&nbsp;

At the core of Tory economics is the need for market and social stability that Truss has lost sight of. At the core of ongoing FTA negotiations is the need to distinguish between productive business and unwanted immigration that Ms Braverman does not seem to be conscious of.&nbsp;

As wounds are licked and blames are apportioned in Britain's cantankerous democratic discourse, the simultaneous equations of the two ladies in question need to be solved by keeping in mind a simple rule of the game called democracy. You can't keep voters, financiers, nationalists and foreign investors all happy at the same time. This means taking one run at a time instead of trying to hit the ball out of the park. The latter would be risky baseball fit for America's vast fields, not a cold, beleaguered island. What Ms Truss and Ms Braverman have done, oh, well, is simply not cricket.&nbsp;

According to AFP, the embattled leader dropped her main economic proposal and declared that she will stick with the Boris Johnson government's intention to increase corporate profits tax after previously changing her mind about lowering income tax rates for the top earners.

Kwarteng took to Twitter and while promising to support Truss in the future, confirmed that he was asked to step aside.

He has been replaced by the centrist former foreign secretary and Tory leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt, who is Britain's fourth chancellor this year.

The dismissal saw the pound fall in comparison to USD, falling under $1.12.

At a press conference later in the day, Liz declared, "I want to deliver a low-tax, high-wage, high-growth economy" adding we will get through the storm.

However, not everyone shared the sentiment. Politicians, especially those in the opposition, were quick to ask, "If her Chancellor is gone, what is the justification for Liz Truss remaining in post?"

Kwasi Kwarteng is no longer the United Kingdom's Chancellor of the Exchequer.&nbsp;As Liz Truss, the Prime Minister struggles to preserve her beleaguered premiership, the minister has as per reports been sacked.

As speculation grew&nbsp;about a possible government u-turn on parts of the recently announced&nbsp;mini-budget in order to calm the markets, Kwarteng who was in the US&nbsp;returned early&nbsp;for "urgent discussions" with Prime Minister&nbsp;Truss, reports the BBC.

Kwarteng&nbsp;had just on Thursday declared he was "not going anywhere" despite market turbulence over the government's contentious economic policies.

In a statement published by the now ex-chancellor, he confirms that he was "asked to stand aside."

He further writes "As&nbsp;I have said many times in the past week, following the status quo was simply not an option. For too long the country has been dodged by low growth rates and high taxation - that must change if this country is to succeed."&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Tuesday, the 47-year-old, hours after meeting Queen Elizabeth II, picked a slew of names for the top ministerial positions.

In a bid to push diversity, Truss has formed a Cabinet team&nbsp;where no white man,&nbsp;for the first time, will hold one of the country's four most important ministerial berths, Reuters reported.

Kwasi Kwarteng, who is Truss's ally and friend, has been appointed as the new chancellor. He will take charge of the economy. He was previously the business secretary.

Kwarteng, whose parents came from Ghana in the 1960s, is the country’s first Black finance minister.

Boris Johnson received a huge round of applause from Conservative MPs when he concluded his last session of Prime Minister's Questions (PMQ) on Wednesday (July 20).&nbsp;

He told the PM candidates to "cut taxes and deregulate where you can to make this the greatest place to live and invest... focus on the road ahead but always remember to check the rearview mirror.&nbsp;

"And remember above all it's not Twitter that counts, it's the people that sent us here," he added.&nbsp;

Reflecting on his tenure, Boris said that "the greatest privilege" was the time in office. He also mentioned the Conservatives' landslide victory in the 2019 election and the Brexit deal.&nbsp;

He said: "We've transformed our democracy and restored our national independence... I've helped to get this country through a pandemic and helped save another country from barbarism -- and frankly that's enough to be going on with. Mission largely accomplished, for now."&nbsp;

What will happen next, only time will tell. But it is for sure that at any rate, Boris is far from retired. He's definitely&nbsp;going to get book deals, writing and speaking fees in the millions.&nbsp;

Sunak and Javid both announced their resignations late on Tuesday, which prompted scores of their more junior peers to do the same and forced their former boss to step down as Tory leader 36 hours later.

After declaring his bid via social media late Friday, Sunak, who was ahead of Truss in the most recent survey of party members, received rapid support from numerous prominent MPs.

However, in a sign of the animosity that can taint the race, he has also come under fire from Johnson supporters. According to the Financial Times, Sunak's departure caused "huge anger" inside the departing prime minister's team, with one senior official, referring to him as "a treacherous bastard."

How will the party choose between the candidates?

As the number of contenders grows, several senior politicians have stressed that the field must be narrowed fast and that the final two-person shortlist to be presented to members should be determined within weeks, before parliament's summer holiday begins on July 21.

British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid resigned on Tuesday (July 5) in the aftermath of scandals associated with the government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.&nbsp;

The UK government announced their resignation, as Johnson came under fire for handling a sleaze scandal involving a senior colleague.&nbsp;

In his resignation letter, Sunak wrote, "The public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously. I recognise this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning."&nbsp;

In his resignation letter to Johnson, Javid said that "it is clear to me that this situation will not change under your leadership - and you have therefore lost my confidence too".&nbsp;

The shocking resignations have plunged Johnson's government into chaos. The UK Prime Minister is under fire after he apologised for appointing Chris Pincher to a government role. Pincher is accused of misconduct.&nbsp;

Harper used to be in charge of Conservative Party discipline in the House of Commons.&nbsp;

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: "It's clear that this government is now collapsing."&nbsp;

In a statement, Starmer further said: "After all the sleaze, the scandals and the failure, it's clear that this government is now collapsing. Tory Cabinet ministers have known all along who this prime minister is."&nbsp;

"They have been his cheerleaders throughout this sorry saga. The British public will not be fooled. The Tory party is corrupted and changing one man won't fix that. Only a real change of government can give Britain the fresh start it needs", Starmer added.&nbsp;
