Yaccarino tweeted that "big moves" are necessary to strengthen the platform, emphasising Twitter's mission. Twitter CEO defends tweet-reading limit. Here's what she said about the controversial move

In the latest development of the ongoing rivalry between tech giants Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has confirmed the release date of its new text-based conversation app called Threads. The app, which has been dubbed Instagram's answer to Twitter, is set to launch on Thursday, July 6, according to a listing on Apple's App Store. Users will have the ability to follow the same accounts they follow on the popular photo-sharing platform while keeping their existing usernames.

This announcement has further fueled the competition between Meta's Chief Mark Zuckerberg, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who owns the microblogging platform Twitter. Reacting to the news, Musk took a dig at Meta Platforms, stating, 'Thank goodness they're so sanely run.'

NDTV cited Meta's Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, who referred to Threads as their response to Twitter during a recent company-wide meeting discussing the app. Cox mentioned that creators and public figures had expressed a desire for a sanely run platform, taking a dig at Twitter's management under Musk's leadership.

A Twitter user took to the platform to provide insights into Meta's upcoming app, describing Threads as a competitor to Twitter. The user speculated that the term 'sanely run' used by Meta could imply that the app may collect extensive user data, a characteristic Meta has been associated with in the past. However, the user expressed support for Musk's vision for 'Twitter 2.0,' emphasising his belief that Musk champions freedom of speech compared to Zuckerberg's track record. Additionally, the user anticipated Musk's preparation for the rivalry and declared allegiance to 'team Twitter.'

Twitter vs Threads: Musk takes a dig at Meta's upcoming app

Instagram's potential rival to Twitter has been released on the iOS App Store in the United States. The app, named Threads, is expected to launch officially on July 6, as reported by several media outlets.

This is a strategic move for Instagram, as its competitors, such as Spill, Bluesky, and Post, experienced significant growth over the weekend due to Twitter's rate-limit errors.

However, Threads has an advantage since it directly imports your Instagram followers and the accounts you follow. Instead of starting from scratch, Threads users will already have their existing Instagram community available.

According to the description on the App Store, Threads is a platform where communities can gather to discuss a wide range of topics. Users can follow and connect with their favourite creators and others who share the same interests. Alternatively, users can build their own following and share their ideas, opinions, and creativity with the world.

Features of the ‘Threads’ app

Although Threads is closely connected to Instagram, it functions as a separate app. Limited information is available from the App Store listing alone, but it appears that users can like, comment, repost, and share posts.

The screenshots on the App Store also suggest that users can choose the audience who can reply to their posts, including everyone, people they follow, or only those mentioned in the post.

Threads, a ‘decentralised’ app

The announcement of Threads doesn't come as a surprise since details about the app have been gradually leaking over the past few months. According to an Instagram spokesperson quoted by Money Control, Threads is described as "decentralised."

Australian firm sues Twitter over non-payment of services in four countries

Elon Musk has set reading limits to solve the issue of data scraping and system manipulation brought on by the AI businesses. The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has now compelled Twitter to introduce certain limiting measures to preserve its database. The limits, according to the announcement made by Musk on Saturday, will limit the quantity of tweets that users can read each day.

Elon Musk takes ketamine for depression and parties? This report makes shocking claim

In a recent interview, on Twitter Spaces, Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s biographer, Walter Isaacson spoke about how the billionaire sometimes goes into “demon mode” which makes him highly productive and a tough leader but also “dark”. This comes as the biographer spoke about Musk’s complex life and the upcoming biography about the billionaire on Thursday.

Musk’s ‘demon mode’

During the interview, Isaacson said that one of the difficulties while dealing with smart and innovative people is that they have quite a “dark streak”. Notably, he has previously written biographies on several innovators, like Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein and Leonardo da Vinci.

Similarly, in Musk’s case, the biographer said that his so-called dark streak comes from a very brutal, violent childhood. “A childhood in which he had very strong psychological difficulties with his father,” said Isaacson.

Notably, the term “demon mode” is said to have been coined by Grimes, Musk’s former girlfriend, who told the biographer how it could be “unpleasant” being around the Twitter CEO when he is in that mode but “gets shit done.”

Speaking broadly about the dark streak, the biographer said that many brilliant and successful people, including Musk and Jobs, are not burdened by empathy which allows them to accomplish a larger mission and can make them much tougher leaders.

In the Tesla CEO case, Isaacson said that he has a “maniacal sense of urgency” which would often scare some of his workers. “He’d go dark and I’d know that he was just going to rip that person apart,” said Isaacson about Musk, when someone would not match his sense of urgency. This became common when Musk had just taken over Twitter, said the biographer.

Isaacson, who followed Musk’s day-to-day life for nearly two years, said that these moments of rage would make him “uncomfortable” and it was hard to watch. “He is just brutal,” said the biographer, as per Insider.

He added, “The thing that I noticed is that once he finishes doing it – and it was never physical and it was almost done in a flat monotone – but he would just really attack people and then a few days later if they absorbed the lesson, he’d forget about it.”

Tesla CEO’s addiction to risk

One of the things that surprised Isaacson, he said, was Musk’s childhood and his relationship with his father Errol Musk. According to the biographer, the Tesla CEO’s father shaped his personality and affected his understanding of risk.

Additionally, the biographer has also attributed Musk’s risk-taking behaviour and “dark streak” to his relationship with his father as well as the bullying he endured in his youth.

Musk is almost addicted to risk, said Isaacson. He added, “It’s an important thing because America has lost the ability to take risks and do great manufacturing, and there’s a dark quality to his desire to take risks”.

The upcoming book

Isaacson said that his book, which is due to release in September, is aimed to show the complexity of Musk and the balance between his “dark streak” and his groundbreaking work with Tesla and SpaceX.

During the interview, the biographer also said that Musk is like someone who doesn’t care about anything aside from getting something done, adding that “there are light strands and brilliant strands with Musk, but also dark strands.”

“If you pluck out that strand, you lose the whole claw and that’s what this biography is about,” said Isaacson, as per media reports.

A British man, Joseph James O'Connor, has been sentenced to five years in prison by the US attorney's office for his involvement in hacking schemes that targeted the Twitter accounts of celebrities, including prominent figures like President Joe Biden and now Twitter owner Elon Musk, reported the Guardian. The US authorities announced the verdict on Friday, highlighting the severity of O'Connor's actions.

Joseph James O'Connor pleads guilty to cybercrimes targeting high-profile individuals

O'Connor admitted to participating in a hacking group that successfully compromised over 130 Twitter accounts, using them to promote a Bitcoin scam.

Among the victims were well-known entities such as Apple, Uber, Kanye West, Bill Gates, and former US President Barack Obama. In addition, O'Connor pleaded guilty to stealing approximately $794,000 in virtual currency from a cryptocurrency company based in New York.

The arrest of O'Connor took place nearly two years ago in Spain, following the hacking incident that occurred in July 2020. After extradition proceedings, he was brought to the United States in April to face the charges filed against him.

The list of charges includes conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and stalking of two victims, among others. The most serious charge could have carried a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

Apart from the prison sentence, O'Connor has also been ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay restitution of $794,000. The impact of his criminal activities has been significant, as he harassed, threatened, and extorted his victims, causing substantial emotional harm.

Kenneth A Polite Jr, an assistant attorney general in the US justice department's criminal division, emphasised the flagrant and malicious nature of O'Connor's conduct, noting his attempts to remain anonymous by using computers, stealth accounts, and aliases outside the United States.

This case also involves two other individuals who have been charged with federal crimes related to the hacking incident. Nima Fazeli, hailing from Florida, and Mason Sheppard, a resident of Bognor Regis in the UK, are both implicated in the cybercrimes.

Additionally, a Florida teenager named Graham Ivan Clark, who is believed to be the mastermind behind the hacking group, was sentenced to three years in juvenile prison in July 2021, as permitted under state law.

Joseph James O'Connor pleads guilty to cybercrimes targeting high-profile individuals O'Connor admitted to participating in a hacking group that successfully compromised over 130 Twitter accounts, using them to promote a Bitcoin scam. Also read | Illegal vapes flood UK markets, authorities seized over 2.5 million in three years, reveals data Apart from the prison sentence, O'Connor has also been ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay restitution of $794,000. UFC boss Dana White confirms Musk, Zuckerberg are 'dead serious' about cage fight

The world’s richest person and top entrepreneur, Elon Musk, has described ESG, or the Environment, Social and Governance movement, as the “Devil.” An article published recently by The Washington Free Beacon had the following caption: “From S&P Global to the London Stock Exchange, tobacco companies are crushing Tesla in the ESG ratings. “How could cigarettes, which kill over eight million a year, be deemed a more ethical investment than electric cars?”

To this, Musk responded: “(This is) Why ESG is the devil…”

While ESG ratings are intended to assess a company's sustainability and ethical practices, Musk's behaviour and statements have often put him at odds with ESG frameworks, causing controversy and raising questions about the effectiveness of these ratings. In this article, we will explore Elon Musk's problems with ESG ratings and the debates surrounding his stance.

How does Tesla rate on ESG?

Last year, the Tesla, SpaceX founder said ESG was a “scam” after his electric car company was ejected from the S&P 500 ESG index after only a year.

Musk’s criticism of ESG stems from the fact that tobacco firms tend to receive higher ESG ratings than electric-vehicle maker Tesla. Musk highlighted a report that showed Tesla scoring only 37 out of 100 in S&P Global’s latest ESG rankings, while tobacco giant Philip Morris scored 84. The London Stock Exchange gave British American Tobacco an ESG rating of 94, and Tesla a more middling 65.

MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International) that provides stock indexes, portfolio risk and performance analytics, and governance tools to institutional investors and hedge funds has been downgrading Tesla's ESG rating over time. In 2017, MSCI gave Tesla an ESG rating of "AAA," but it reduced the rating to "AA" in 2018 and "A" in 2022.

The reasons for the downgrades are:

• Labour management: MSCI found that Tesla has had a number of problems with labour relations, including allegations of racial discrimination and poor working conditions.
• Corporate governance: MSCI found that Tesla has a weak corporate governance structure, with a lack of independent directors and a CEO who has too much power.

ESG data can be noisy, which can lead to different rating agencies assigning different scores to the same company. Musk has argued that these ESG scores are flawed and do not accurately reflect Tesla's social contributions.

However, the ESG scores for Tesla from the above-mentioned agencies highlight some common challenges facing the company.

ALSO READ| Elon Musk responds to Jack Dorsey’s claim that India threatened to boot out Twitter

The "S" in ESG

Tesla is a leader in the electric vehicle industry, but it has fallen behind its peers when it comes to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. ESG is a broad framework that assesses a company's performance on a variety of factors, including environmental impact, social responsibility, and corporate governance.

Tesla has been praised for its environmental impact, as its electric vehicles produce zero emissions. However, the company has been criticised for its lack of diversity and its treatment of employees. Tesla's board of directors is overwhelmingly white and male, and the company has been accused of unfair labour practices.

In addition, Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, has been criticised for his support of cryptocurrencies, which have a significant carbon footprint. Musk has also been accused of making offensive remarks about women and minorities.
These criticisms have led some ESG rating agencies to downgrade Tesla's ESG score. While Tesla is a leader in the electric vehicle industry, it needs to do more to address its ESG shortcomings if it wants to be a leader in the 21st century.

ESG is not just about the environment. It is also about social responsibility and corporate governance. Tesla needs to recognise that ESG is a holistic framework. It cannot focus on just one factor, such as the environment, and ignore the others. If Tesla wants to be a leader for the 21st century, it needs to do more than just make electric cars. It needs to be a good company for all of its stakeholders.

One can’t live in a vacuum of just environmental or social issues – they are all intertwined.

ESG vs sustainability vs impact

Some, including Musk, argue that the ratings should recognise and reward companies that actively support the well-being of the planet and society. On the other hand, entities like S&P, who produce these ratings, maintain that the purpose of the ratings is to indicate the extent to which a company's stock faces risks from ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors. This is why companies like Exxon Mobil, which contribute significantly to climate change, are permitted to be part of an ESG index if they can demonstrate efforts to reduce that risk.

ESG and sustainability are distinct yet interconnected concepts. ESG serves as a framework for evaluating an organisation's legitimacy and competitiveness, focusing on performance assessment. Sustainability, on the other hand, operates as a management paradigm aimed at ensuring an organisation's long-term viability or "the business of staying in business."

ESG primarily centres around evaluating the risks and opportunities posed to companies by evolving social, environmental, and governance factors. In the United States, it primarily considers the impact of the world on the company, rather than the impact of the company on the planet.
.
Effectively, Musk is conflating ESG with sustainability and impact. The issue with Musk's claims is that ESG is not concerned with impact but rather with operations. It provides a lens through which to assess how global events might jeopardise a company's enterprise value, rather than focusing on how a company itself may pose risks to the world. Hypothetically, if there were an S&P 500 Impact Index, Tesla would likely be included while Exxon Mobil would not. However, this does not mean that Tesla can automatically claim compliance with ESG principles.

Therefore, Musk is both correct and mistaken. Tesla has undoubtedly made significant contributions to addressing climate change, but ESG does not necessarily measure the aspects that Musk and others believe it does.

In the context of investors, instead of relying solely on generic ESG ratings, it would be advisable for them to first identify the specific ESG considerations that are most important to them and then select an investment strategy accordingly.

The unplugged version: Elon Musk Vs ESG

An Australian cyber regulator on Thursday said it has demanded Twitter explain its handling of online hate as the microblog has become the country's most complained-about platform since new owner Elon Musk lifted bans on a reported 62,000 accounts.

Australia says Twitter is top platform for online hate, demands explanation

Australia’s internet safety watchdog has given Twitter an ultimatum of 28 days to clean up “toxicity and hate” on its platform, threatening to fine the company if it fails to comply. Twitter discovers deeply buried code that shadowbans accounts. Musk reacts

Elon Musk is sounding the alarm again about the dangers posed to humanity by AI, warning that more has to be done to limit its development or risk sleepwalking into a disaster.

Twitter is being forced to leave its Boulder, Colorado headquarters because it hasn't paid the rent in months, according to a report in the Denver Business Journal.

As reported by TechCrunch, the company moved into the premises in February 2020 and used a letter of credit with a value of about $1 million to pay for the first three months of rent.

The judge issued an order on May 31 for the sheriff to assist in evicting Musk's company within 49 days after the landlord sued Twitter in court last month, according to TechCrunch.

The company has previously faced legal action from a number of other landlords who claim it hasn't been paying rent on its San Francisco headquarters and its King Charles-owned office in London.

Musk allegedly stated in a 4 a.m. conversation that the company would only pay office rent "over his dead body," according to a lawsuit brought by former Twitter workers last month.

As per the lawsuit, Alex Spiro, Musk's lawyer, "loudly opined" that it was unfair for Twitter's landlords to expect it to pay rent since San Francisco was a "shithole."

It appears to be a strategy to assist Twitter save expenses after Musk, as previously reported by Insider, reduced employees by over 90 per cent to save money.

As per the lawsuit, Alex Spiro, Musk's lawyer, "loudly opined" that it was unfair for Twitter's landlords to expect it to pay rent since San Francisco was a "shithole." It appears to be a strategy to assist Twitter save expenses after Musk, as previously reported by Insider, reduced employees by over 90 per cent to save money.
