End of era for Twitter users: 'Time to say adieu to all the birds,' says Musk | World News | WION

Be ready to bid adieu to the famous ‘blue bird’ logo of Twitter as elon musk is looking to redefine Twitter’s branding and add an ‘x’ factor to it. The move aims to change Twitter's brand perception and bring advertisers back to the platform.

Elon Musk rebrands Twitter to ‘X’ in brand overhaul

Twitter is now the ex-name of the social media platform which is now 'X'. This may sound a mouthful but Elon Musk-led biggest microblogging platform in the world has undergone a complete transformation in a step towards what the eccentric billionaire calls a 'super app'. A lot is probably yet to happen, but Twitter's official Twitter handle showed the logo of 'X' on July 24 and this created a major buzz worldwide. Shortly before that, Musk had hinted that the iconic blue-bird logo would be dropped soon.

This may just be the end of an era and the start of a new one at Twitter. But rebranding Twitter as 'X' is definitely not the only reason Twitter under Musk has made global news.

Let's take a look at how some controversies at Twitter after Musk's takeover have shaken the tech world and more.

The sackfest

Soon after taking over Twitter, Musk hinted that the company would do some major cost-cutting. It was clear that the jobs of those working at Twitter were not secure but just to what extent Musk would rock the boat was unclear, at least in the initial period.

Then the axe fell!

By the end of May 2023, the headcount at Twitter fell by over 80 per cent.

“There were a lot of people that didn't seem to have a lot of value. I think that's true at many Silicon Valley companies. I think there is the possibility for significant cuts at other companies without affecting their productivity, in fact increasing their productivity," Musk told Wall Street Journal in a virtual interaction.

The massive culling was not without consequences. The stability of the platform online and of the company itself came under the scanner. Add to this several Twitter outages and enough people, including the all-important advertisers, were spooked. Those sacked included Jack Dorsey-appointed former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal.

The 'Blue Tick' blues

Before Musk took over Twitter, the blue tick was something to be coveted. The simple verification mark was hot property and a sign that an account is indeed what or who it claims to be.

But Musk replaced the old system with Twitter Blue, a subscription which awarded a blue tick to anyone who was ready to spend some money monthly.

Twitter's content policy

Musk, who called himself a 'free-speech absolutist', soon found himself at the receiving end of global criticism over his views on content moderation. Shortly after acquiring Twitter, Musk said in October 2022 that he would establish a “content moderation council” which will advise him on certain key decisions, like upholding former US president Donald Trump's suspension from the platform. Musk himself had said that he wouldn't reinstate Trump without consulting the council. But in November, Musk unilaterally revoked Trump's suspension.

Under Musk, Twitter also removed bans on many accounts, owners of which were called 'neo-Nazis' by news outlets.

Musk disbanded the Trust and Safety Council which was already existing within Twitter.

The Elonjet saga

In November 2022, Musk declared that he would not ban an account which monitored flights of his Gulfstream G700 private jet in real-time.

“My commitment to free speech extends even to not banning the account following my plane, even though that is a direct personal safety risk,” Musk tweeted.

But the account was banned in December. Musk claimed that the account was violating Twitter's doxxing policy. Supporters of the account claimed that the action was taken in spite of the account using information about his jet which was already public.

Allegations of stifling free speech

In December last year, Twitter suspended the accounts of several prominent journalists who had retweeted info about Musk's private jet. The accounts were later re-instated but Musk attracted criticism for targetting accounts based on personal preferences and prejudices.

Elon Musk looks to change Twitter logo with focus on branding overhaul

Elon Musk is changing the way Twitter treats media queries as per a comment dropped by the Tesla CEO on a post by a social media user. Usually, when any media outlet approaches Twitter for queries, the company reacts with an auto-reply message which is a poop emoji.

Musk, a billionaire, after taking over Twitter, has been making quite a number of changes to the microblogging website. One of these changes was when in the month of March Musk announced that journos who seek to ask questions to Twitter will get a poop emoji in response.

So what happened?

A Twitter user, Shibetoshi Nakamoto, shared a screenshot of an article that stated, "Twitter responded to a request for comment by sending a poop emoji, as is its standard practice." Captioning the post, the user wrote, "Every time I see an article mention this it amuses me… why do they bother trying though?"

How did Musk respond?

Responding to this post, Musk wrote, "We are changing the auto-reply from 💩 to a “We will get back to you soon” infinite loop."

A Twitter user, Shibetoshi Nakamoto, shared a screenshot of an article that stated, "Twitter responded to a request for comment by sending a poop emoji, as is its standard practice." Captioning the post, the user wrote, "Every time I see an article mention this it amuses me… why do they bother trying though?" How did Musk respond? Responding to this post, Musk wrote, "We are changing the auto-reply from 💩 to a “We will get back to you soon” infinite loop." "Or maybe a “Check with us again tomorrow” loop" he added.
A little more than ten days after its launch, Meta-owned Threads is now facing its first major hurdle. Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Monday announced that the platform was implementing rate limits on Threads, akin to the one imposed by Twitter earlier this month. The announcement, however, provided the ammo to Twitter boss Elon Musk, who took the opportunity and poked fun at the newly-launched platform.

"Spam attacks have picked up so we're going to have to get tighter on things like rate limits, which is going to mean more unintentionally limiting active people ( false positives). If you get caught up those protections let us know," Mosseri wrote.

The announcement went viral, allowing Twitter boss Elon Musk to take a shot once again at the Mark Zuckerberg-owned company. Responding to a screenshot of Mosseri's statement, Musk tweeted "Lmaooo" and “Copy” with a cat emoji, insinuating that Threads was a copycat platform of Twitter.

In a series of Tweets, CEO Elon Musk revealed that the company's cash flow remains in the negative territory, primarily due to a significant drop in advertising revenue and a heavy debt burden. Musk announced that the company's cash flow remains negative, attributing to a massive 50% drop in advertising revenue.

Threads touched a hundred million users in less than five days of its launch but the buzz around the app only meant to last a fortnight. The question which arises now is - does the app have something more than there is to offer? Can it beat Twitter?

One week of the threads: What's the USP?

Twitter has urged a US federal court to amend or terminate an order of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that lets it monitor the social media app’s data security practices.

Elon Musk’s lawyers have claimed that once the 52-year-old billionaire took over the company last year in March, the FTC intensified its investigation into the company which “has spiralled out of control and become tainted by bias,” AP news agency reported.

The FTC has been monitoring Twitter since it gave consent to the order in 2011 following allegations of security data lapses. But the lawyers have claimed bias once Musk bought the company.

It comes after reports in March revealed that FTC was probing Musk's mass layoffs at Twitter and trying to obtain his internal communications as part of ongoing oversight into the social media company's privacy and cybersecurity practices, according to documents described in a congressional report.

In May 2022, Twitter paid nearly $150 million for violating the 2011 consent order, about five months before Musk took over.

An updated version established new procedures requiring the company to implement an enhanced privacy-protection program as well as beefing up information security.

'FTC pummeling Twitter'

In the filing, Twitter, whose corporate name was changed to X Corp last year, claimed that the FTC has “pummelled” the company with “burdensome letters and requests for depositions,” issuing demands for information as frequently as one letter every other week.

The FTC wanted to depose Musk on July 25, the filing states, but FTC Chair Lina Khan declined to meet with him personally until Twitter complied with the information requests.

Twitter has sought intervention of the US District Court for the Northern District of California, seeking a protective order and relief from the consent order.

“X Corp has responded to this avalanche of demands as best it can, responding promptly to FTC inquiries and producing more than 22,000 documents to date,” the filing states.

"The FTC’s overreach has now culminated in a demand to depose Musk, who is not, and never has been, a party to the consent order."

US billionaire Elon Musk and Twitter have been slapped with a $500 million lawsuit over alleged non-payment of severance packages to ex-employees. The lawsuit was filed by law firm Sanford Heisler Sharp on Wednesday in US District Court for the Northern District of California on behalf of employees who were fired from Twitter post Musk's takeover.

The lawsuit seeks damages worth $500 million as well as directions for Twitter to “abide by all terms of the severance plan by paying all terminated employees what they are owed.”

Twitter’s severance plan gone for a toss

It is alleged that prior to Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter, the company had a severance plan in place for its employees, which was protected under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). According to the complaint, both Musk and Twitter assured employees that the benefits provided by the severance plan would continue even after the acquisition.

However, the lawsuit claims that Twitter and Musk have failed to uphold their promise and have not paid the expected benefits to the terminated employees.

“Musk initially represented to employees that under his leadership Twitter would continue to abide by the severance plan,” Sanford Heisler Sharp’s firm administrative partner in Washington, Kate Mueting, said in a statement. “He apparently made these promises knowing that they were necessary to prevent mass resignations that would have threatened the viability of the merger and the vitality of Twitter itself.”

The lawsuit seeks damages worth $500 million as well as directions for Twitter to “abide by all terms of the severance plan by paying all terminated employees what they are owed.” Twitter’s severance plan gone for a toss It is alleged that prior to Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter, the company had a severance plan in place for its employees, which was protected under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). According to the complaint, both Musk and Twitter assured employees that the benefits provided by the severance plan would continue even after the acquisition. However, the lawsuit claims that Twitter and Musk have failed to uphold their promise and have not paid the expected benefits to the terminated employees. Watch: Are Elon Musk's Starlink satellites leaking radiation? × “Musk initially represented to employees that under his leadership Twitter would continue to abide by the severance plan,” Sanford Heisler Sharp’s firm administrative partner in Washington, Kate Mueting, said in a statement. “He apparently made these promises knowing that they were necessary to prevent mass resignations that would have threatened the viability of the merger and the vitality of Twitter itself.” Twitter’s legal challenges This is not the first time Twitter has faced legal challenges regarding its mass layoffs. Twitter threatens legal action against Meta's Threads, unraveling battle for social media supremacy

Meta's new Threads app, aimed at competing with Twitter, will not be launched in the European Union (EU) for now, media reports said. AFP news agency, while citing a source close to the company, said that the app will not be launched in the EU due to regulatory concerns. However, the source added Meta has decided to hold back the release in the EU's 27 countries as it seeks clarity on the bloc's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which will be fully implemented next year.

What is Digital Markets Act?

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) is a significant regulatory framework introduced in Europe to address the dominance of large digital platforms and ensure fair competition in the digital market. It aims to regulate the behaviour of "gatekeeper" platforms, which have substantial market power, by imposing specific obligations and restrictions on them.

The DMA establishes stringent regulations for major internet companies operating in Europe. One of these regulations prohibits platforms from sharing data across different services and restricts companies from directing platform users solely to their own products.

Meta's decision to postpone the Threads app release in the EU is likely influenced by the need to ensure compliance with these new regulations, media reports said.

Data privacy concerns and EU rules

The description of Threads on app stores in the United States reveals that personal data, including contact and geolocation information, will be collected and used for advertising purposes. Meta has previously faced scrutiny from European regulators for attempting to leverage data from WhatsApp to strengthen Instagram and Facebook, which was prohibited by EU rules.

As a result, it appears that Meta's decision to delay the Threads app launch in Europe aligns with its commitment to avoid further conflicts with EU regulations.

The Data Protection Commission in Ireland, where Meta's EU headquarters are located and which oversees the company's activities in Europe, stated that Meta has confirmed it will not be releasing the app in Europe "at this point."

According to the app's description on the app store, Threads provides a space for communities to come together and engage in discussions covering various topics.

Meta's compliance with new EU rules

Meta, along with other major companies, such as Amazon and Apple, informed the EU that they meet the threshold to be subject to the new rules when they are enforced next year. This indicates that Meta recognises the significance of complying with the DMA and is actively engaging with the regulatory framework to ensure its future operations align with EU requirements.

When contacted by AFP, Meta did not provide an immediate comment on the matter. However, it remains to be seen how Meta will navigate the regulatory landscape and address the concerns raised by the EU.
