Elon Musk says you'll have to pay to read news on Twitter from next month. Know why

Elon Musk, the current owner of Twitter, is seen by many as the reason behind its decline. User experience on the platform and satisfaction with work have both plummeted after Musk's takeover.

As the saying goes, customers owe businesses nothing and will look elsewhere if a platform doesn't satisfy their needs. This is exactly what's happening as Jack Dorsey's BlueSky project picks up steam and users start to consider alternatives.

The former CEO of Twitter, Dorsey, created BlueSky as a rival to Twitter. BlueSky's user interface and Twitter's are quite similar. The microblogging platform even gave it the label "Twitter 2" because of how popular it has become, reported India Today.

For the time being, BlueSky's only goal is to lure the Twitter users who are dissatisfied with their user experience on the service. BlueSky aims to save users from the chaos that Twitter has descended into over the past months.

But there's a catch. Not everyone can use the BlueSky platform. Currently in beta, it can only be accessed with an invite code.

One million people are currently on the waitlist for BlueSky, despite the fact that it is not accessible to the general public, demonstrating how strongly people want to get away from Twitter.

According to consumer analytics company analytics.ai, the software has been downloaded from the Apple app store more than 360,000 times across the globe, reported India Today.

Although Twitter and the BlueSky app are similar, Dorsey wanted to create a decentralised service. Because Twitter is a centralised service, all user information, including tweets, likes, and comments, is kept on Twitter's servers. In this configuration, Twitter has control over who gets access to, manages, and uses user data.

“We envision an open social media ecosystem where developers have more opportunity to build and innovate, and users have more choice and control over which services they use and their experience on social media as a whole,” Jay Graber, CEO of BlueSky, wrote in a blog post in 2022.

Additionally, Twitter has taken away the blue ticks from all the accounts that had previously been verified, including famous people like journalists, celebrities, politicians, and more. Now that Musk is charging for the blue tick, anyone, regardless of his or her social status, is able to obtain a verified badge on Twitter, which has caused a lot of confusion on the platform.

Verified Twitter accounts are now 'prioritised', says Musk amid blue tick fiasco

Days after the Blue Checks disappeared from various accounts, the esteemed badge for verification suddenly appeared on any and every account that has more than a million followers on Sunday morning. Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, the social media platform has seen some major and shocking developments, but this update has left netizens wondering if Twittersphere has actually gone bonkers.

Blue Check – paid or unpaid?

The appearance of Blue Checks on accounts with more than a million followers has resulted in more meme accounts getting the blue tick compared to the account of newsmakers. The Blue Checks appeared on the accounts regardless of whether they paid for the Twitter Blue subscription which charges $8 per month.

The users have been left baffled by the update, which to some is appearing as a glitch, while those who were earlier enjoying the exclusive verified status have now become part of a bizarre club.

Celebs, alive and deceased, get verified

This sudden appearance of Blue Checks returned the verified status to the accounts of celebrities, even those who are dead like - Anthony Bourdain, Chadwick Boseman, and Kobe Bryant. Consent as a necessary aspect has certainly lost its place on the social media platform as the dead celebrities won't be ever able to provide their consent for the blue verification.

Despite no consent from the deceased, the accounts have still been given the honoured status of paid blue checks.

Elon Musk pays for few celebrities to retain their Twitter blue ticks

Elon Musk’s Twitter finally did what it had decided to do over two weeks ago; remove its blue checks from verified accounts. This has left many confused over which accounts of celebrities, lawmakers, and so on, are real and which are not. The move which was announced weeks ago finally took place on Thursday (April 20).

What does the blue tick mean now?

Previously, Twitter’s blue tick had been given to celebrities, influencers, journalists and other people who fit a certain criterion and followed rules made by the social media platform which were described on the company’s website as “active, notable, and authentic of public interest”.

The blue tick, which was given to a select group of users- both individual and business accounts- would gain significance and credibility from the millions of others on the microblogging platform.

ALSO READ | Elon Musk says ‘legacy’ blue checks to be removed soon from Twitter accounts

The company introduced the blue check mark system in 2009, in order to help users identify genuine accounts as opposed to impostors or parody accounts. However, last month, Twitter announced that it would be shutting down its ‘legacy verified programme’ on April 1 but continued for nearly 20 days after.

As of now, the blue checkmark does not mean that the account belongs to someone who they claim to be but that the account has an active subscription to Twitter Blue and meets another set of criteria by Musk’s Twitter.

What is Twitter Blue?

Twitter Blue is a paid subscription that adds a blue checkmark to a user’s account and offers other features like the ability to edit a tweet, upload 1080p videos, bookmark folders, undo tweets and more. In the United States, it costs around $8 a month on the web and $11 per month through the in-app payment on iOS and Android.

Therefore, the blue check mark which was once a goal and achievement has become a monthly paid subscription for which a user needs a phone number. There have also been reports that Twitter Blue users may soon be able to hide the blue tick or verified badge and identity details.

What are these criteria?

“Only accounts actively subscribed to Twitter Blue are eligible to receive the blue checkmark. Our team uses an eligibility criteria on when the checkmark is given to ensure we maintain the integrity of the platform,” the company has stated on their website.

This includes having a display name and profile photo which has been active in the past 30 days and other than 30 days upon subscription and a confirmed phone number.

Additionally, a user’s account should not have made recent changes to its profile photo, display name, or username and their “account must have no signs of being misleading or deceptive” or signs of engaging in platform manipulation and spam”.

Who is real and who is not?

Some might agree that the blue sticker next to a person’s name has lost its appeal because anybody may buy one and display it on their profile. However, people cannot deny that it was useful and served its purpose of identifying real accounts from fake or parody ones. While Twitter has set guidelines in place for these accounts the problem may continue to persist.

Therefore, the users might have to go one more step which includes cross-referencing the accounts against other websites. For example, most celebrities or organisations post their Twitter handles on other social media platforms. Additionally, most organisations post their social media handles on their websites through which one can make sure that the account they are following is real.

What about media and government accounts?

Earlier this month, Twitter also announced that it will make its ‘Verification for Organisations’ service available across the world. The feature will allow organisations and their affiliates to differentiate themselves on Twitter which is reportedly not different from the Twitter Blue service except it is for businesses rather than individuals.

The subscription will cost $1,000 per month (plus tax) and $50 per month (plus tax) for each additional affiliate sub-account. However, government accounts and agencies or heads of government such as the US President Joe Biden or Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have grey ticks that note their connection with government agencies.

However, this is not extended to every politician like the member of the Congress and recently disqualified Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, who was among those who lost their blue tick on Twitter, on Thursday, at the time of reporting this story. Meanwhile, some media accounts have been given yellow ticks but it is always better to cross-reference those without one from their website.

Musk ‘personally’ pays for certain accounts

Elon Musk-owned Twitter started the process of removing legacy blue checkmarks from user profiles on Thursday. As soon as the exercise started, several big names, including Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church lost their blue tick.

The Holy See (the government of the Roman Catholic Church) was taken aback by the removal of the verified symbol. In a statement, the Vatican said it was aware of the rule change but noted that the pope had more than 53 million followers on his @Pontifex accounts in various languages.

"While awaiting to know the platform's new policies, the Holy See hopes they will include certification of the authenticity of the accounts," read a statement released.

After a period of confusion, Twitter restored the checkmark, albeit in grey colour this time. According to Twitter's terms of service, the grey tick is given to any government or multilateral organisation account.

The blue tick

The blue tick was earlier given to a prominent group of users, both individual and business accounts as a way to lend credibility. With millions of users on the platform, the blue checkmark was a way to differentiate if the individual or organisation was original and not phoney.

As soon as Musk took over Twitter, he announced there will be no discrimination on the platform and even a commoner will be able to have a checkmark against their name. Thus, he introduced the Twitter Blue subscription service.

The initial iteration of the service caused chaos as scammers changed their names and pretended to be someone else, forcing Musk and his team to halt the service and close the loopholes.

After a relatively smooth rollout, Twitter announced that it would be shutting down its ‘legacy verified programme' on April 1 but continued for nearly 20 days after.

WATCH | Many high-profile users lose verification symbol on Twitter × The blue tick The blue tick was earlier given to a prominent group of users, both individual and business accounts as a way to lend credibility. As of now, the blue checkmark does not mean that the account belongs to someone who they claim to be but that the account has an active subscription to Twitter Blue and meets another set of criteria by Musk’s Twitter. Twitter drops 'state-affiliated' labels from media accounts

Since a change to Twitter's venerable blue tick mark system went into effect on Thursday, the iconic blue tick verification symbol has vanished from a number of accounts. Notable users who have lost their verification include former US President Donald Trump and Pope Francis.

Many high-profile users lose verification symbol on Twitter

Twitter's inventor of the hashtags that are used to categorise messages has quit the platform, claiming Elon Musk mismanaged it. Following the loss of his verification badge, Chris Messina, who in 2007 suggested Twitter begin using hashtags to organise tweets by topic or event, said goodbye to the platform this weekend.

Twitter has also begun the process of deleting the legacy blue ticks this month, and users who want to retain them would have to start paying $8 per month for a Twitter Blue subscription.

"My choice isn't about the badge; it's about everything that lead up to the badge and how it has been handled. Whatever Twitter was before deserved more dignity and consideration than it's received in the last six months," Messina tweeted, as reported by The Verge.

Birth of the hashtag

In 2007, Messina proposed the concept of hashtags, which allowed users to look up topics by using the hash sign (#). On a number of social media sites, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, the concept gained considerable traction. The hashtag allows quick subject searches for users and helps in extending the reach of posts. Trending hashtags are now shown in real time in a separate section on Twitter.

Additionally, hashtags can be used to filter out the most popular, most recent, photographs, and videos relating to a specific topic.

Elon Musk-owned Twitter is seeking new avenues to raise money as well as bring more creators to the platform. The billionaire on Thursday informed that creators will be able to charge certain money from users to access their content, ranging from 'longform text to hours-long video'.

Musk said subscriptions were now enabled on the platform but added the caveat that only Twitter Blue users could receive the benefits. However, to be eligible for the 'monestisation' feature, a person needs to have at least 500 followers, should have posted 25 tweets in the last month and should be at least 18 years old.

The feature allows creators to charge a certain fee which followers will have to pay to gain access to exclusive tweets, subscribers-only Spaces and special subscriber badges.
