Tokyo 2020 Paralympics bronze medalist Sharad Kumar is currently admitted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The high jumper is under observation for the last five days after complaining of chest pain.

But Sharad is totally relaxed as the doctors look to carry out some tests to check on the exact reasons behind the pain. "I am admitted here in AIIMS Delhi for the last 5 days now," Sharad told ANI on Monday. "Doctor told me that they need to carry out some tests. This is certainly not good signs for me, but I am totally relaxed and chilled because I know the nation`s support and love is behind me.

"Elaborating on the reason behind getting admitted, Sharad said: "I complained of a little chest pain, but now I am okay. Once my test is done then the actual picture of my health will come out." On Saturday, Sharad along with shuttler Pramod Bhagat, shooter Manish Narwal, and javelin thrower Sundar Singh Gurjar were recommended for Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award 2021 by the Paralympics Committee of India (PCI). All four brought laurels for India in the recently concluded Tokyo Paralympics.

In India, it isn't easy to keep cricket at a backseat. Workplace deadlines are given a miss. Leaves are consumed if Team India have a marquee series or World Cup in the pipeline. Thus, the India-England Tests commenced on August 2 and has lived upto expectations so far, with some pulsating affair between two top sides in the United Kingdom. Nonetheless, the inspiring journey of Indian athletes in Tokyo 2020 and Tokyo Paralympics have pushed the gentlemen's game, India's most adored game, to the back foot in the last few months.

While Tokyo 2020, which lasted from July 23-August 8, was a huge success for Team India and reignited the faith of the Indian sports audience towards hockey, wrestling and many other sports, the humongous success of para-athletes have been a new chapter of learning for the sports lovers nationwide.

With a total of 26 medals coming in for India, including both the Olympics, we look at some of the huge moments of pride provided by the women athletes in varied sports.

1) Mirabai Chanu: After the shambles of Rio 2016, the 27-year-old weightlifter rose to the occasion on Day One of Tokyo 2020 with a silver medal in the 49kg category. Her success has paved way for many young athletes taking a liking towards the sport. A viral video of a young girl lifting weights, seeing Mirabai's podium finish, speaks volumes of her incredible success and overall impact.

2) Lovlina Borogohain: The youngster became the talk of the nation with a bronze medal finish, in the 69kg category, in Tokyo 2020. The boxer's resume is already a glittering one; being a World Championship medallist, Arjuna awardee and Asian Games medallist. Safe to say, Tokyo heroics is just a sneak peek of things to come from the boxer.

3) Avani Lekhara: The story of the 19-year-old so far has been awe-inspiring. In her maiden Olympics, i.e. Tokyo Paralympics, she became the first-ever Indian woman Paralympian to win two medals. She won gold in 10m air-rifle SH1 standing final event and bronze in 50m rifle 3P SH1 shooting final. She is also India's first woman para-athlete to win gold.

4) Bhavina Patel: She became India's first-ever para-athlete to win a medal (silver) in table tennis at the Olympics. While she missed out on gold by a convincing margin, she made the whole nation beam with pride with her overall performance.

5) PV Sindhu, women's hockey team: The list cannot be complete with the omission of either of the two. While Sindhu displayed her experience and consistency with a bronze medal finish in Tokyo 2020, after silver in Rio 2016, the Rani Rampal-led women's team have revamped hockey despite returning with no medal.

From battling early group stage elimination to beating pre-tournament favourites Australia (in the quarters) and losing to Great Britain 4-3 in the bronze-medal face-off, the women's team's impact was certainly more than the men's, who ended with bronze. Given how Rio 2016 was a forgettable affair for Rampal & Co., where they finished last, the fourth-spot finish is surely a strong base created for plenty of glory to follow in the near future.

How it all panned out

Praveen, who became the youngest Paralympic for India at 18, passed on his first attempt of 1.83 and directly cleared 1.88m in his initial jump. After sitting through the 1.93m mark, the youngster cleared 1.97m on his first attempt which was enough for him to add another medal for the nation at the showpiece event.

Later, it took a total of two attempts for Praveen to clear the 2.01m mark, alongside Great Britain's Jonathan Edwards Broom and Maciej Lepiato of Poland. The Indian then cleared 2.04m jump in his first attempt. He couldn't clear the 2.07m mark at one go, however, he achieved it on his second attempt and also created the new Asian record in the process. As his Polish opponent fell flat to clear the mark in his third attempt, it assured Praveen of a silver. Britain's Broom cleared the 2.10m mark in his second attempt and got the first spot whereas the 18-year-old Indian athlete settled for silver after failing to clear the mark in his three attempts. Given his inexperience, he has surely made a mark at the international level, leaving his countrymen mesmerised.

For the unversed, this also becomes India's fourth medal in high-jump. Praveen has, thus, joined the likes of Nishad Kumar (silver), Mariyappan Thangavelu (silver), and Sharad Kumar (bronze).

Tokyo Paralympics: Praveen Kumar bags silver in high-jump T64 final, takes India's medal-tally to 11

Tokyo Paralympics has so far been a huge success. However, there was a shocking turn of events as Malaysia's Ziyad Zolkefli was denied of his gold medal for arriving three minutes late for the shot put final event in the F20 class.

The International Paralympic Committee spokesman Craig Spence revealed that Zolkefli along with two others who did not reach the podium were allowed to compete under protest after they failed to appear at the scheduled time for the event.

"They were late, they may have had a logical reason for being late, and therefore we allowed them to compete and look at the facts of the matter afterward,” Spence said as per a report in The Guardian. On the other hand, a statement from World Para Athletics stated that a referee had revealed that “there was no justifiable reason for the athletes’ failure to report” on time.

Following the unfortunate turn of events for Ziyad, his disqualification served as a huge gain for Ukraine's Maksym Koval who ended up securing gold whereas his Ukrainian teammate Oleksandr Yarovyi took silver. Meanwhile, Greece's Efstratios Nikolaidis ended at the third spot with a bronze medal.

Severe heat on social media platforms

Spence further revealed, "We are now seeing comments on all our social media posts that have nothing to do with the men’s shot put F20 event." In addition, he stated that the Ukrainian Paralympic Committee “was getting a lot of abuse from Malaysians" post what happened with Ziyad.

Spence added, "I’m sorry. Rules are rules. The decision was taken. It wasn’t the Ukrainians’ fault that the Malaysian was late. Others get there five minutes early."

He revealed that the excuse given was that the Malaysian athlete Ziyad and two others defended themselves by saying that they didn't hear the announcement or it was in a language they didn't understand for their late arrival. Following the episode, reactions have come in from all corners with many sympathising with the Malaysian athlete Ziyad.

Talking about the medal tally, China continues to top the overall standings whereas Ukraine finds itself at the 5th spot following Ziyad's disqualification.

India's medal-tally continued to rise up on Tuesday (August 31) in the Tokyo Paralympics as Mariyappan Thangavelu won the silver medal in the men's high jump T42/T63 class. Mariyappan successfully cleared 1.86m to clinch the second spot. On the other hand, Sharad Kumar won the bronze medal in the T42 class after clearing 1.83m.

While Mariyappan couldn't better his Rio gold and had to settle for the second spot, with a silver medal, the athlete rued his chances and blamed the rain playing spoilsport to him missing out on gold.

Mariyappan said after the event, "I could have won gold and claimed the world record (1.96m). I came here with that aim. But the rain played spoilsport. It was a drizzle initially but after the 1.80m mark, it became heavy. The sock on my other leg (the impaired right leg) got wet and it was difficult to jump. For the unversed, the athlete had suffered permanent disability in his right leg after it was crushed under a bus at the age of five.

“I could not execute my plan here. I could have cleared 1.90m had it not been the weather conditions. I will try for gold and world record in Paris 2024,” he further added.

“Weather was the reason why he failed in clearing 1.88m. It is three years from now (for 2024 Paris Olympics). He will win gold there,” said Satyanarayana, who is also national Para Athletics chairman and national coach.

Despite Mariyappan not being satisfied with his own performance, PM Narendra Modi was all praise for the champion athlete and tweeted following his win, "Soaring higher and higher! Mariyappan Thangavelu is synonymous with consistence and excellence. Congratulations to him for winning the Silver Medal. India is proud of his feat."

Courtesy Mariyappan and Sharad's heroics, the Indian contingent's medal-tally at Tokyo Paralympics has touched the double digits (10). Earlier, the likes of Avani Lekhara, Singhraj Adhana, Devendra Jhajaria, Sumit Antil, etc. made India proud with their respective medals.

So far, the Indian team has already crossed the national side's overall medal-tally in Tokyo 2020.

It's important to mention here that this is Lekhara's first major international medal. She had finished fourth in the last world championship in 2019.

Her profile on the Paralympics page says that she is inspired by Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra, who won the first individual Gold medal for India at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

She sustained spinal cord injuries in a car accident in 2012 and began shooting in 2015 at Jagatpura Sports Complex in Jaipur.

Avani tried both shooting and archery at the beginning after her father encouraged her to get involved in a sport. But later she found that she enjoyed shooting more, and was also inspired by Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra after reading his book.

A student of law, Lekhara made her debut for India in the 2017 World Cup in Al Ain, UAE.

Her journey has not been easier as last year the COVID-19 pandemic impacted not only her shooting training but also her essential physiotherapy routine.

But fighting in the face of adversities, Avani emerged as a champion, an inspiration for generations to come.

Tokyo Paralympics: Biggest-ever contingent of 54 athletes set to represent India

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic organisers on Saturday (August 21) announced several national Paralympic Committees had withdrawn from the Games, while one more positive COVID-19 case was detected amongst Paralympic athletes already residing in Japan.

According to International Paralympics Committee (IPC) spokesman Craig Spence, the four national Paralympic Committees that withdrew include those of Samoa, Kiribati, Vanuatu, and Tonga, all citing difficulties and financial burdens caused by pandemic travel and quarantine measures.

Afghanistan's Paralympic team has also been forced to withdraw due to the current unstable situation in Kabul, as organisers said there would be "no safe way" to bring the athletes to Tokyo.

Tokyo 2020 authorities said on Saturday that a total of 15 new Paralympic Games-related COVID-19 cases had been detected, one of them being an athlete. It comes a day after the first positive case among Paralympic athletes was reported.

With less than a week to go until the Paralympics, organisers are warning that the event will be held in challenging circumstances. Japan has extended COVID-19 emergency measures in the capital and other regions that will run through the Games and, like the Olympics, it will take place from August 24 to September 5 without spectators generally.

Several more countries withdraw from Paralympics, new COVID-19 case among athletes

The Paralympic flame arrived in Tokyo on Friday as virus cases hit fresh records nationwide just four days before the Games begin.

Japan's daily infections topped 25,000 for the first time on Thursday, with the number of severe cases also higher than ever as the nation battles a fifth wave driven by the more contagious Delta variant.

As Tokyo prepares to host the top sporting event for athletes with disabilities, organisers urged participants to follow virus rules with increased vigilance.

"The infection situation today is different to how it was before the Olympics. It has deteriorated," said Tokyo 2020 official Hidemasa Nakamura.

"And the local medical system is also in a very tight situation," he told reporters after a meeting of experts to discuss Covid-19 measures.

"Para athletes, compared to Olympic athletes, risk having even more serious symptoms, so we need to be even more careful."

Flame-lighting ceremonies were held without spectators across the capital on Friday, after the traditional torch relay was scrapped over fears that crowds could spread infections.

Over the past week, multiple Paralympic flames have been transferred from torch to torch at similar scaled-back events across the country.

These flames were combined at an evening ceremony in Tokyo attended by top officials including Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

"From the bottom of my heart, I am looking forward to being able to share excitement with everyone as Para athletes from around the world do their best," Suga said.

International Paralympic Committee chief Andrew Parsons said the Games would show "that there is light at the end of the dark tunnel we have all experienced over the last 20 months".

Earlier in the day, a huge version of the red, blue and green Paralympic agitos symbol was brought to the Tokyo bay area on a barge, replacing the five rings which were towed away after the Olympics.

The pandemic-delayed Olympics were held mostly behind closed doors, with athletes tested daily and confined to their accommodation and Games venues.

These conditions will largely be replicated at the Paralympics, which open on Tuesday with around 4,400 athletes set to compete in 22 sports.

So far, 86 positive tests have been recorded among Paralympics participants, mostly among Japan-based employees and contractors.

Organisers insist the Olympics did not cause any significant increase in virus cases in Japan, with 546 cases detected out of tens of thousands of athletes, officials and media.

An estimated 88 percent of those in the Paralympic Village are vaccinated, according to organisers.

Around 40 percent of Japan's population are fully vaccinated.

Tokyo Paralympics organisers opened a repair centre on Sunday for prosthetic limbs, wheelchairs and other equipment in the athletes' village ahead of next week's start of the Games.

The organisers said about 100 staff will provide repair and maintenance services at the centre as well as in booths at 14 competition venues. Services will include tyre replacements and welding repairs on wheelchairs.

The service team includes three technicians from German artificial limb maker Ottobock, which is operating the repair and maintenance centre in the Paralympic village.

Heinrich Popow, a German Paralympic gold medallist who is affiliated with Ottobock, said the centre provides Paralympic athletes with technical as well as mental support.

"Friendships develop from the close cooperation between technicians and athletes, which inspires courage during the competitions," said Popow, who won gold medals in the 2012 men's 100 m T42 and the 2016 men's long jump T42.
