When going to invade Umrao Singh Jewellers in south Delhi's Bhogal area, he carried a packet of cashews and almonds to ensure he didn’t go hungry.

<h2>The accused toured Delhi three times before burglary</h2>

According to the police, Srivas stayed at the Rajdhani Guest House at Chandni Chowk. In addition to performing a reconnaissance on September 21, Srivas had previously made two trips to the city for the same reason, police said.

He arrived in Jangpura on September 9 and remained there till September 12, when he departed for Mathura-Vrindavan. On September 15, he left for Delhi again, where he remained until September 17. From Kashmere Gate, he then boarded a bus bound for the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

He made his last trip to Delhi on September 21 and at 9.20pm, he left for Jangpura to conduct another reconnaissance.

A screwdriver and a plier were among the two tools Srivas allegedly took to Delhi on September 21 and used to commit the robbery at Umrao Singh Jewellers, according to the police. Aside from these, he also spent $16 (Rs 1,300) for a disc cutter from GB Road and a hammer from Chandni Chowk.

Delhi Police have also discovered CCTV footage from the store, in which Srivas is seen covering his face with a white towel and unplugging the CCTV equipment.

<h2>How police reached the accused&nbsp;</h2>

As part of a joint operation between the Delhi Police and the state's police, Srivas was taken into custody from Kabirdham district in the eastern state of Chhattisgarh on Friday (Sep 29) morning.&nbsp;

In Chhattisgarh, he already has multiple cases registered against him. The arrest happened when Chhattisgarh Police informed the south-east district police that they had apprehended a man named Lokesh Rao who admitted to assistant sub-inspector Shamit Tiwari that one of his colleagues "had committed a big crime in Delhi" after being apprehended.

The Chhattisgarh Police then provided a photo of Srivas that matched the suspect's body type and appearance from the CCTV examined by Delhi police that showed him entering the shop on September 24.

For the heist&nbsp;on&nbsp; September 24, the&nbsp;accused entered the shop through the terrace and escaped with ornaments worth $3 million (Rs 20-25 crore).&nbsp;

This is one of the biggest robberies in Delhi since 2015. Back then, a cash van driver fled with almost Rs 22.5 crore in cash from the Govindpuri neighbourhood in southeast Delhi.

Fischer, a German art historian who had led the museum since 2016, announced last month that he planned to step down after his eight-year stint.&nbsp;

He admitted that his response to the warnings that an employee may have been stealing items should have been better and that the failings “must ultimately” rest with him.&nbsp;

“It is evident that the British Museum did not respond as comprehensively as it should have,” said Fischer.&nbsp;

Notably, in an earlier statement the British Museum said that Fischer would step down “with immediate effect,” but later changed it to say that he would resign once an interim leader had been found.&nbsp;

<h2>What was the case all about?</h2>

Last week, a member of staff had been dismissed after gold jewellery and gems dating from the 15th century BC to the 19th century AD, had been found stolen from a storeroom in the museum. It also was found that items from the museum’s collection were found to be “missing, stolen or damaged” prompting a police investigation.&nbsp;

The police on Thursday (August 24), said that they had interviewed but not charged the unnamed man over the stolen artefacts. Fischer accepted the responsibility for the museum’s failure to respond to warnings about possible theft of thousands of objects in 2021.&nbsp;

“It is evident that the British Museum did not respond as comprehensively as it should have in response to the warnings in 2021, and to the problem that has now fully emerged,” he said, in the statement.&nbsp;

Fischer’s resignation also comes days after he defended the museum’s handling of warnings from an author, academic and antiquities dealer, Ittai Gradel who had raised alarm about the stolen items.&nbsp;

Gradel also went on to dismiss claims by Fischer who said that the concerns were raised about a “small number of items”. He accused the museum of treating him like a “village idiot” and welcomed Fischer’s resignation, reported the Guardian.&nbsp;

According to Gradel’s estimates, up to 2,000 items could have been stolen, including the entire collection of unregistered gems. “They have been lying there without any registration at all for over 200 years,” he told the Guardian.&nbsp;

“If they can’t be identified how can they return them to the museum.” This was amid concerns about the absence of proper record-keeping at the British Museum.

Fischer also said that he later withdrew remarks made about the antiquities dealer and expressed “sincere regret” over the “misjudged” comments.&nbsp;

One of the accused first fled with his mobile phone on the pretext of calling home and later when he was heading towards the police station to lodge a complaint about the stolen mobile phone, the other accused ran away with his bike on the pretext of helping him reach the police station and lodge a complaint in the matter.&nbsp;

The victim had come to Pune around two months ago with a private job at Mhalunge MIDC and did not know the city well, said his brother-in-law.&nbsp;

According to police, an unidentified person approached the complainant seeking help to call his home and claimed that he does not have his own mobile phone. The complainant with good intentions gave him his mobile phone to contact his family members. But the one seeking help was a thief as he ran away with the mobile phone.

In another incident, the victim who was unaware of the locality approached a person standing nearby to find the address of the local police station. The man&nbsp;assured him of help&nbsp;and said that he knows several policemen at the local police station.&nbsp;

In return, he asked the victim to get a cigarette for him. However, as the victim reached a nearby shop to get a cigarette the accused ran away with his bike.&nbsp;

The victim, later on, checked his phone and got to know that the man who fled with his mobile phone had made a Rs 3,000 money transfer through a UPI transaction.

Police have booked two unidentified men under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).&nbsp;Further investigations into the matter are underway.&nbsp;

Recently released bodycam footage has shed light on the aftermath of a major jewellery heist in Lebec, California. The jewellery heist as per a BBC report could be valued at $100 million, that could mean that the theft could be the most expensive jewellery heist in US history.

<h2>What happened a year ago</h2>

Almost a year ago, in 2022, two security guards made a stop at a Flying J convenience store while transporting jewellery worth millions from a show in San Mateo to Pasadena.

As per LA Times, in the early hours of July 11, 2022, sheriff's deputies responding to a vehicle burglary arrived at the Flying J Travel Center in Lebec, California.

There they discovered was a bold late-night heist that had just taken place—a Brink's tractor-trailer carrying millions of dollars worth of jewellery, watches, gems, and other items from a trade show had been breached.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies, Jeremy Viger and David Swigart, engaged in a conversation with the Brink's drivers, capturing the interaction on their body cameras. The footage, recently obtained by The Times, provides new insights into the aftermath of the crime, which affected 14 jewellers whose merchandise was on display at the International Gem and Jewellery Show.

<h2>What does the newly unveiled footage show?</h2>

The deputies, as per the LA Times report, arrived at around 4 am, finding the truck stop filled with parked big rigs. They approached the drivers cautiously, aware that the thieves might still be in the vicinity.

"We are gonna post up here because you never know — they could still be lurking," says one deputy Viger.

The body camera footage, recorded from different angles, reveals a conversation that lasted approximately 45 minutes.

During the recorded conversation, Tandy Motley, one of the truck crew, mentions that he had been watched by a man at the jewellery show.

"He was staring me right in the eye," said the driver, as per the report.

"I’m pretty sure we were followed from the show where we got loaded," adds Motley.

Another revelation is the estimate cost of the heist.

The drivers discussed the value of the stolen merchandise, initially estimating it at $2.7 million. However, Brink's later stated in a legal filing that the stolen shipments were worth more than three times that amount. The conflicting valuations have led to lawsuits between Brink's and the jewellers involved.

<h2>The lawsuit</h2>

The heist has sparked a lawsuit filed by 14 jewellers against Brinks, the company responsible for the transportation of the precious jewels.

The value of the stolen jewellery is the subject of duelling lawsuits. One lawsuit was filed by Brink's against the jewellers whose merchandise was pilfered, and a counter-lawsuit filed by the jewellers against Brink's and other parties.

While Brink's has sought to limit the payout to the jewellers at $8.7 million, Attorney Jerry Kroll, representing the jewellers, puts the estimated value of the stolen jewellery at around $100 million.

However, Brink's says that the $8.7 million payout appropriately reflects the value declared by the merchants on shipping manifests.

Brinks as per a CBS news report stated that the jewellers had undervalued their goods, which impacted the security measures implemented during transportation. The company claims that if the jewellers had accurately declared the value of their goods, appropriate security measures would have been taken, and they would have compensated the customers accordingly.

Captured on camera: Body cam footage from biggest jewellery heist in US history reveals unknown facts

Jordan Thomson, 30, was caught on video taking 48 Twix bars, 48 Snickers bars, 24 Bounty bars, and 24 Yorkie bars from the Co-Op in New Broadway, Worthing, on April 30 — just a few days after he was freed from jail for crimes similar to these, according to Sussex&nbsp;police.

In the weeks that followed, Thompson was also seen taking 11 coffee jars, five packs of laundry detergent, two bottles of vodka, and a significant amount of meat from various establishments in Worthing.

Staff soon recognised Thomson as a frequent offender and informed police, offering many CCTV footage as proof.

“I hope Thomson learns from his previous mistakes and gets the support he needs to put a stop to his criminality, which causes so much harm to the business community,” he added.&nbsp;

They chose to tour the restaurant's precious wine cellar. At 2 AM, the woman ordered a salad. Initially, the receptionist resisted. He found it odd as they served a 14-course meal to the woman for dinner. But he gave in. While he was away from the reception, the man stole a key card from the reception. However, according to the court, the key card failed to open the door. So, the man called the woman from the cellar door and asked her to distract the receptionist again. The woman called reception, this time asking for dessert. The employee agreed to bring her some fruit. The man stole the master key card from reception. He entered the wine cellar and stuffed 45 bottles in three bags. The couple checked out from the hotel at 5 AM. According to the court documents, they placed hotel towels between them to prevent the bottles from clinking. In collusion with other railway officials and security personnel, the engineer allegedly sold the engine using a falsified letter from the divisional mechanical engineer of Samastipur.

The 29-year-old Mexican woman, who has competed in a beauty pageant as per Spanish media, distracted waiters of El Atrio, a Michelin-starred restaurant, while her 47-year-old male accomplice entered the wine cellar using a master key and stole the wine bottles worth 1.7 million dollars. 
The next day, hotel CCTV captured the pair, who had checked in with false Swiss identity documents, checking out at 5.30 a.m. and leaving on foot with no forensic trace of their presence left at the hotel, it said, leading police to initially believe an organised gang was behind the heist. 
The police statement said that the pair had visited the hotel before and had, like many customers, been given a tour of the wine cellar.&nbsp; 
Among the stolen wine was a bottle of prestigious French Bordeaux Chateau d’Yquem from 1806, which had an “incalculable” value, said sommelier Jose Polo, a co-owner of El Atrio. 
“That bottle was part of my personal history, almost part of me, of the history of Atrio, but also of Caceres, of its citizens, of wine lovers all over the world,” Polo said in a letter to local media quoted by Spanish daily El Pais. 
The two suspects left Spain within days and were pursued for months across Europe before being identified by Croatian border guards as they crossed from Montenegro, police said.

Millions of dollars' worth of jewellery stolen from security truck at California rest area

Cybercriminals laundered $8.6 billion in cryptocurrencies last year, up 30% from 2020, according to a report from blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis released on Wednesday.

Overall, cybercriminals have laundered more than $33 billion worth of crypto since 2017, Chainalysis estimated, with most of the total over time moving to centralized exchanges.

The firm said the sharp rise in money laundering activity in 2021 was not surprising, given the significant growth of both legitimate and illegal crypto activity last year.

Money laundering refers to that process of disguising the origin of illegally obtained money by transferring it to legitimate businesses.

About 17% of the $8.6 billion laundered went to decentralized finance applications, Chainalysis said, referring to the sector which facilitates crypto-denominated financial transactions outside of traditional banks.

That was up from 2% in 2020.

Mining pools, high-risk exchanges, and mixers also saw substantial increases in value received from illicit addresses, the report said. Mixers typically combine potentially identifiable or tainted cryptocurrency funds with others, so as to conceal the trail to the fund's original source.

Wallet addresses associated with theft sent just under half of their stolen funds, or more than $750 million worth of crypto in total, to decentralized finance platforms, according to the Chainalysis report.

Chainalysis also clarified that the $8.6 billion laundered last year represents funds derived from crypto-native crime such as darknet market sales or ransomware attacks in which profits are in crypto instead of fiat currencies.

"It's more difficult to measure how much fiat currency derived from off-line crime — traditional drug trafficking, for example — is converted into cryptocurrency to be laundered," Chainalysis said in the report.

"However, we know anecdotally this is happening."

Over 90 containers were vandalised every day in LA County in the last quarter of 2021.&nbsp;

The police have arrested over 100 people in the last three months of 2021 for "trespassing and vandalising" trains.&nbsp;

A spokesperson for Union Pacific said, "While criminals are being caught and arrested, charges are reduced to a misdemeanor or petty offence, and the person is back on the streets in less than 24 hours after paying a nominal fine. In fact, criminals boast to our officers that there is no consequence."

The damages doe so far from such thefts in 2021 amounted to nearly $5 million.

A limited-edition Hublot watch that once belonged to the football legend late Diego Maradona was recovered from India’s northeastern Assam state on Saturday morning after it went missing from Dubai.

The watch, worth around Rs 2 million (approx. US $13,206) was allegedly recovered from an Assam resident who used to work in Dubai and had returned to India recently, the Assam Police said.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted that it was recovered with assistance from Dubai Police.&nbsp;

According to police, the accused person was working as a security guard at a company in Dubai in UAE that was storing the belongings of the late Argentinian footballer.

The accused is suspected to be involved in the theft of a safe in which the limited edition Hublot watch was also kept, Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said.

After working for a few days at the company, the accused returned to Assam in August, citing his father’s ill health as the reason.

After Dubai Police reached out to the Assam Police with information about the accused, the cops launched a massive hunt to trace his whereabouts.

Subsequently, Wazi Hussain was arrested from his residence at 4 am and the watch was recovered, he said.

Diego Maradona was seen wearing two Hublot Big Bang watches during the FIFA World Cup 2010 when Hublot launched its Maradona Big Bang Chronograph Limited Edition.

The watch has the football legend’s photo, with arms raised in victory, engraved on the back of the Hublot Big Bang Maradona case. It also has his signatures and jersey number.

At least 14 incidents have been reported in affluent parts of southern England with incidents reported in Poole, Wimborne, Wareham, Ferndown, Highcliffe and Poundbury, Dorset in the last two months.

There hasn't been a formal linking of the thefts yet, however, the Dorset police acknowledge "a number of incidents of the same nature".

In one case, a theft was committed in the parking lot of the Ferndown golf club, which charges £2,000 a year for their membership, while another theft occurred near a golf club in Poole.

One of the Rolex Rippers' victims, Alan Bruce, described the pair as "highly trained professionals." On 15 July, Bruce, a 63-year-old marine engineer in Wimborne, was approached by the pair while walking in town.&nbsp;

The taller one was portraying that she was deaf and they sought signatures for a petition for a new deaf centre, he told Bournemouth News and Picture Service.

This thief revealed that he had at first hid these paintings in a home but later decided to stash them in thick vegetation at a local gorge. He has now been arrested.

"Today is a special day, (a day of) great joy and emotion," Culture Minister Lina Mendoni told reporters. He also clarified that it would have been impossible to sell this painting as it had a personal note at the back that read, "For the Greek people, a tribute by Picasso". The thief, however, claimed he never intended to sell the paintings as he was an art lover.

This painting was gifted to the Greek state as a symbol of respect for the country’s resistance to Nazi Germany during the period of 1941-44.

"This painting is of particular importance and sentimental value to the Greek people, as it was personally dedicated by the great painter to the Greek people for their fight against fascist and Nazi forces," Mendoni said.

In addition to Picasso’s gift, another painting titled 'Stammer Windmill' by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian was also recovered. This painting was also stolen in the January 2012 heist.
