The Indian government has greenlit four new air routes connecting northeastern states to international destinations under the flagship regional air connectivity scheme, UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik), which translates to "Let the common citizens of the country fly." This government initiative promotes regional air connectivity by making air travel affordable and accessible to a larger population, especially in remote regions. This has marked a historic first for the region. The routes include connections from Assam to Thailand and Bangladesh, Manipur to Myanmar, and Tripura to Bangladesh. Subsidised fare Scheduled to become operational within a few weeks, the airfares on these routes—Guwahati-Bangkok, Guwahati-Dhaka, Imphal-Mandalay, and Agartala-Chittagong—will be subsidised under the UDAN scheme. Residents say that these are the worst floods they have ever experienced. The water levels in the yom river have gone up significantly. Local residents and officials are using sandbags to hold back the flood waters and minimise the damage caused to their homes. Top Thailand activist who called for monarchy reforms jailed for 4 years

Arnon Nampa, one of Thailand's most prominent political activists, has been sentenced to a four-year prison term under the country's controversial lese-majeste law or royal defamation law.

The verdict, as per a BBC report, was handed down by a Bangkok court over comments he made during a protest in October 2020.

Questioning the role of monarchy in modern Thailand

BBC reports that Arnon Nampa, a human rights lawyer, was the first activist to publicly call for a national dialogue about the monarchy's role in today's Thailand.

Thailand sentences prominent activist Arnon Nampa to prison for royal defamation

Thailand is making headlines today as it seeks substantial investments from some of the world's tech giants. In a bid to revitalise its economy, prime minister Srettha Thavisin has announced that Tesla, Google, and Microsoft are considering pouring a collective $5 billion into the country.

Thailand courts Tesla, Google, and Microsoft for $5 billion investment

Thailand's Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, announced on Sunday a landmark investment commitment from technology giants Tesla, Google, and Microsoft, potentially injecting a substantial $5 billion into the Thai economy. The Prime Minister gave his statement upon returning from the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he engaged with top executives from these influential companies to promote investment in Thailand, according to a report by the Bangkok Post.

According to Mr. Thavisin, Tesla is eyeing the construction of an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility, while Microsoft and Google are exploring the establishment of data centres within the Kingdom. While he made the statement, he emphasised the importance of these investments in rejuvenating Thailand’s economy.

This investment surge comes at a crucial time for Thailand, whose economy is facing challenges, with growth projected at 2.8 per cent this year, lower than initial estimates, due to limited exports. Prime Minister Thavisin's discussions with Tesla CEO Elon Musk in the U.S. underscore the potential of Thailand's electric vehicle (EV) industry, with the nation actively incentivising EV and battery manufacturers to set up regional production centres. Concurrently, the Thai government is offering tax incentives to boost local EV adoption, aiming to become a regional leader in EVs.

In addition to this, Thavisin expressed his intent to attend the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Leaders' Meeting in San Francisco in November. He plans to collaborate with Thai business leaders to engage with global companies and discuss investment opportunities both in Thailand and the United States.

Thavisin emphasised the importance of financial support for international investors looking to establish branches in Thailand and hinted at potential collaborations with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to list Thai companies in the U.S., marking a significant step forward in international investment relations.

However, the Bangkok Post also reported that some experts, such as Tawisant Lonanurak, a former secretary-general of the Thai Chamber of Commerce's northeastern divsion, urge caution. They believe that major foreign companies will carefully evaluate various factors, including political stability, tax policies, and the rule of law, before committing to investments in Thailand. Lonanurak also underscored the need for Thailand to prioritise negotiating more free trade agreements with its global trading partners to maintain a competitive edge.

Fugitive ex-Thai PM, who arrived in Thailand after 15-year self-exile, jailed for 8 years

Srettha Thavisin, formerly the chief of one of Thailand's largest real estate development firms, has ascended to the role of prime minister in an unexpected turn of events. Thavisin, 61, won a parliamentary vote on Tuesday (Aug 22) to assume the country's highest office, ending weeks of political deadlock after the elections.

This coincided with the return of Thaksin Shinawatra, the founder of Thavisin's populist Pheu Thai Party, to Thailand after 15 years of self-imposed exile, only to be imprisoned.

Following the vote, Thavisin expressed his gratitude to the Thai people and conveyed his sense of honour at being elected as prime minister. While he beamed with optimism, he refrained from answering questions until royal confirmation of his election was received, a customary practice in Thailand.

A tactical alliance

Tuesday's vote for Thavisin's premiership received critical support from pro-military members of parliament, effectively sidelining the progressive Move Forward Party, which had emerged as the largest single party in the recent elections.

The conservative establishment views Thavisin and his Pheu Thai Party as a more acceptable option, prompting an unlikely alliance with former political adversaries aligned with pro-military factions.

Together, they seek to govern Southeast Asia's second-largest economy.

In 1990, alongside some cousins, he co-founded Sansiri, a property development company that grew to become one of Thailand's largest.

In 2022, Sansiri posted impressive revenues and profits, leading to an over eight per cent surge in its stock on the day of Srettha's election.

Despite his success, Thavisin's journey to power has not been without controversy. Allegations of wrongdoing in two land deals during his tenure at Sansiri surfaced earlier this month, claims that both Sansiri and Thavisin vehemently denied.

Who is Srettha Thavisin, Thailand's property mogul and next prime minister?

Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has returned to the country after 15 years in self-exposed exile. His historic homecoming comes on a day when his party is seeking to form a government and end the political deadlock in the nation.

Thailand gets its 30th Prime Minister as Srettha Thavisin elected as new PM

After three months of political turmoil and on the same day former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra returned from exile, Thai lawmakers on Tuesday (Aug 22) voted to approve tycoon Srettha Thavisin as Thailand's new prime minister.

This decision, which came as a surprise to many, marks the end of a prolonged deadlock in Thai politics. Despite his Pheu Thai party finishing second in the May election, Srettha secured a comfortable majority across both houses of parliament to become the 30th prime minister of Thailand.

Thavisin's resounding majority

Srettha Thavisin garnered more than the 374 votes required for a majority of elected lower house MPs and senators appointed by the previous junta. This victory was a clear demonstration of support for his leadership and policies.

Pheu Thai coalition, which includes approximately a dozen parties, controls 314 seats in the lower house out of a total of 500. However, this coalition raised eyebrows by forming partnerships with former political adversaries, including pro-military parties that had previously ousted a Pheu Thai prime minister.

Shinawatra's return and immediate detainment

The approval of Srettha Thavisin as prime minister coincided with the return of Thaksin Shinawatra to Thailand, marking his first visit since 2008.

However, Thaksin's return was short-lived as he was promptly detained upon arrival. His presence added a layer of complexity to the already intricate political landscape.

Pheu Thai's emergence

Pheu Thai, despite finishing second in the May election, stepped in to form a government after the reformist Move Forward Party (MFP), which won the most seats, saw its leader denied the prime ministerial position due to opposition from conservative, pro-military factions.

Thavisin, formerly the head of Thai property giant Sansiri, made several promises upon assuming office.

He pledged to address poverty and inequality issues in Thailand, promising much-needed reforms.

Additionally, he staunchly rejected corruption allegations made by an anti-graft whistleblower.

MFP's rise and challenges

The May election saw the unexpected rise of the Move Forward Party (MFP), fuelled by urban and youth discontent after nearly a decade of military-backed rule. While MFP secured the most seats, its commitment to reform royal insult laws and challenge powerful business monopolies encountered fierce resistance from the country's influential elite.

MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat's failure to secure support from pro-military and royalist senators in a previous prime ministerial vote led to his suspension from parliament by the Constitutional Court.

Srettha Thavisin's approval as prime minister represents a significant development in Thai politics, breaking a prolonged deadlock. However, this decision also raises questions about the future direction of Thai governance, especially in light of Thaksin Shinawatra's return and the political controversies that surround it.
