Thailand&nbsp;is benefiting from India's rice export ban and has no reason to halt its own shipments as it has sufficient output for exports and domestic consumption, its commerce minister said on Monday.

India in late July ordered a halt to its largest rice export category in a move that will roughly halve shipments by the world's largest exporter of the grain, triggering fears of further inflation on global food markets.

The Indian ban provides an opportunity for Thai rice producers, especially in Africa which consumes large volumes of rice from India, minister Jurin Laksanawisit told a press briefing.

"With India's export ban, global prices rise as volumes drop ... farmers can sell paddy rice at higher prices," he said.

But global prices are volatile and the government will closely monitor the situation, he added.

Thailand, the world's second-largest rice exporter, is expected to export more than 8 million metric tons of rice this year, Charoen Laothamatas, president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, told the briefing.

In the first seven months,&nbsp;Thailand&nbsp;shipped 4.8 million metric tons, he said, with monthly exports of 700,000 to 800,000 tons. Last year's rice exports were 7.71 million tons.

"The world market is very turbulent because of speculation in every market, affecting countries that do not have stocks in hand," he said.

Thai rice export prices might increase by 20% after the Indian ban, Charoen said.

Exporters were reluctant to quote prices while waiting for more clarity and were likely to halt shipments for a time, said Chookiat Ophaswongse, honorary president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association.

"Now we're worried about old contracts with delivery over the next two or three weeks as prices are quite volatile," he said. "But this should be a temporary event, until there is more clarity from India."

Two trade sources said last week that some rice exporters in&nbsp;Thailand&nbsp;and Vietnam were re-negotiating sales contracts for around half a million metric tons for August shipment.

The government would also ensure domestic rice prices do not rise too high, minister Jurin said, adding that inflation is expected to stay low.

"As rice exports remain normal, domestic consumption is not affected yet but paddy rice prices are higher, so rice prices must be managed to stay at appropriate levels," Jurin said.

Paddy prices were currently a record 12,000 baht ($344.43) per metric ton, he said, with paddy output expected to fall by an annual 5.6% to 32.35 million metric tons this year.

Thailand says no rice export halt, to benefit from India's export ban

In Thailand, a seemingly innocent chocolate-mint ice drink has become entangled in a political storm.

Some cafes have suspended its sale&nbsp;due to its association with a prime ministerial candidate from the opposition Pheu Thai party, Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

The beverage, once a harmless treat, is now seen as a symbol of political betrayal, as reported by The Guardian.

<h2>Election results and coalition dynamics</h2>

In the May general election, Pheu Thai won the second-highest number of seats, and it subsequently formed a coalition with Move Forward, a party advocating for reforms to remove the military from politics and amend the country's lese-majesty law.

Both parties pledged to uphold democracy in a country prone to military coups. They vowed not to join a coalition with the army generals who have held power since the 2014 coup.

<h2>'Betray-your-friend'&nbsp;drink</h2>

As Pheu Thai's coalition dynamics remain uncertain, creative protests are emerging. Many support shops have removed the choc-mint drink from their menu as a symbolic gesture.

However, some worry about the pitfalls of symbolism in polarised politics.

They fear that associating the chocolate-mint drink with a specific political party could lead to division and further polarization.

Critics argue that the drink should be enjoyed by all, just like the colour yellow, which was once associated with the military and monarchy but is now seen as neutral.

Move Forward leader, Pita Limjaroenrat, was blocked from becoming prime minister by military-appointed senators. As a result, Pheu Thai, the expected coalition partner, may be seeking alternative alliances. The delay in announcing a prime ministerial candidate for a vote on Thursday has given Pheu Thai extra time for negotiations.

What's happening in Thai politics?

Pita Limjaroenrat, the prime ministerial candidate in Thailand, was temporarily suspended from parliament on Wednesday (July 19) by a Constitutional Court. This comes after a case was accepted against him alleging he was unqualified to run in a May 14 election. This comes as another blow to his hopes of becoming the nation's next leader, despite a stunning election win.&nbsp;

The suspension was announced when Pita was returning to parliament for another day of deliberation on whether he could become prime minister after his initial effort failed by 51 votes last week.&nbsp;

The court said in a statement that Pita has 15 days to respond.&nbsp;

A complaint was filed by the Election Commission against the Move Forward Party (MFP) leader accusing him of violating election laws for allegedly holding shares in a media company.&nbsp;

This is also a setback for the party as it has ridden high on the hopes of young and urban Thais tired of nearly a decade of army-backed rule.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the court announced that it would hear a case on whether Pita should be removed from parliament entirely for owning shares in a media company. It also ordered him to leave the assembly in the meantime.

"It was commanded that the respondent must suspend his role... until the Constitutional Court has made its decision," the court said in a statement.&nbsp;

Thai court suspends PM frontrunner Pita as lawmaker as parliament votes on next leader

Thailand Elections - Pita promises to 'not give up'

Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of Thailand’s pro-reform party which won the most seats in May’s election, on Thursday failed to get the desire majority vote in the parliament to become the next prime minister.

The 42-year-old, who heads the Move Forward part, could not muster up the support due to host of abstentions and votes against him.

According to the new election rules, which was amended post the 2014 military coup, the party with the most parliament seats needs the backing of some military-appointed senators in the parliament.

Pita failed to secure 375 votes in the 749-member parliament. Only 324 people supported him, while 182 voted against him. And 199 lawmakers abstained, AFP reported.

Pita’s eight-party alliance controls 312 seats in the lower house and he needed support from some of the 249 members of the conservative-leaning upper house, which was appointed by the military after the coup.

<h2>Reason for setback</h2>

Pita’s defeat in the parliament is attributed to his Move Forward party’s electoral promise that seeks to amend the law that prohibits insulting the monarchy.

A few lawmakers accused Pita of stoking tensions and seeking to undermine the royal family.

“It’s clear that this operation is aiming to overthrow [the royals]. How can we, the senators, support you to do this?” one senator, Seree Suwanpanont, said, according to the Guardian.

The latest setback would unlikely hold Pita from running again, as a repeat of the ballot is scheduled to take place next week, for which two days have been allotted.

<h2>Gravitas: Will Thailand get an anti-monarchy prime minister?</h2>

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/gravitas-missing-indigenous-children-archaeologists-dig-remote-site-in-nebraska-614861/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

It is believed that Move Forward’s coalition partner, Pheu Thai, the party associated with the exiled leader Thaksin Shinawatra, will put forward a candidate for either the second or third ballot.

However, it is not going to be smooth sailing for Pita, who faces the threat of parliamentary suspension, and two cases filed against him and his party.

A day before the vote, the Election Commission recommended his suspension from parliament over allegations he broke campaign rules — a move the MFP branded as an "abuse of power."

The recommendation followed a probe into Pita's ownership of shares in a media company, prohibited under Thai law.

According to reports, the station has not broadcast since 2007, and Pita has said the shares were inherited from his father.

<h2>Protest imminent?</h2>

The development is likely to provoke people to go on street protests as they had turned out in large numbers in May to oust the military junta rule after being fed up with their corruption-laden bureaucracy.

On Wednesday evening, crowds had gathered in central Bangkok, with some holding signs that read “Respect my vote” and “Senators don’t vote against the people’s will”.

Thailand's Election Commission (EC) recommended that Pita Limjaroenrat, a top prime ministerial hopeful, should be suspended as a member of parliament (MP) following the commission's investigation, the news agency AFP reported on Wednesday (July 12) citing chairperson Ittiporn Boonprakong.

The commission is set to submit to the Constitutional Court the findings of its investigation into whether Limjaroenrat, a leader of the Move Forward Party (MFP), broke campaign rules. The move comes just a day before Limjaroenrat is due to contest a vote in parliament on the premiership. He has the support of eight parties in an alliance seeking to form the next government. "The EC will send a case to the Constitutional Court for ruling," the poll body said. It is not yet clear what the Constitutional Court's ruling will be, should it accept the case, the AFP report said. The Election Commission's investigation centres around Pita's ownership of shares in iTV -- which has not been broadcasting in years. And as per Thai election law, politicians are not allowed to hold media company shares. If found guilty, he could be barred from politics while facing up to 10 years in prison. Limjaroenrat hits out at EC; says in good spirits despite suspension risk On Wednesday, Limjaroenrat hit out at the Election Commission's action and accused it of abuse of power. In a statement, the MFP said, "The decision to submit a case to the court saying there was enough evidence, without informing him of any charges and not allowing him a chance to explain as under the regulations set by the EC... is an abuse of power under the criminal code." The PM hopeful also said that he was in good spirits despite facing the risk of being suspended as a lawmaker. He vowed that Thursday's parliamentary vote to decide the next premier would go ahead. Limjaroenrat eligible to run for PM even if he is suspended as MP Even if Limjaroenrat is suspended as a lawmaker, he is still eligible to run for prime minister, the report further said. In the May elections, his MFP won most seats. But despite the victory, Limjaroenrat faces several challenges including the Election Commission investigation. His alliance together has 312 seats in parliament, but he needs at least 376 votes in a joint sitting of the bicameral legislature. Last Sunday, the PM hopeful held a huge rally for support in Thailand's capital city of Bangkok to thank the voters. "What we are asking is just to return common sense to Thai politics because it’s been irregular for quite a decade now after the constitution that was drawn," he said at the time. "So, we’re not asking for more, we’re not asking for them to vote for me, we’re not asking them to vote for my party, we’re asking them to vote for democracy, for the majority, and return common sense to Thai politics so that we can finally move forward," he said. "Now that we have come to a critical juncture of the country and then we put our personal differences aside, and then we start talking about the people, we start talking about the opportunities and the crisis that are lying ahead of us and then we're starting to have a closer gap, a closer gap (with the senates," he added. At least two people were killed and 11 others were injured after an elevated road in Bangkok collapsed on Monday (July 10), the news agency Associated Press reported on Tuesday citing authorities in Thailand's capital city. The elevated road had been under construction since 2020. The report said that authorities had launched an investigation to find out the reason for the collapse. Addressing a press conference, Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipan said that the debris at the accident site was being removed after authorities confirmed that no one else was trapped. Sittipan added that it could take several days for the rubble to be cleared. Inspecting the site, the governor further said the accident should not have happened. “Someone needs to be responsible for this because someone died...this wasn’t something unpreventable,” he added. As per the Office of the Official Information Commission, the construction project (of the elevated road) was commissioned by authorities to Construction and Npa Construction. Further details are awaited. In May, a construction worker was killed and, five others were injured after a floor in a riverside condominium building in Bangkok’s Bang Sue district collapsed, a report by Thai PBS World said. And in February, three workers were killed when a scaffold collapsed at a construction site of a hotel in the Khlong Toei district, the Italian Thai Development (ITD), which is responsible for the project, said. A tectonic shift is underway in the Thai automotive industry. Chinese automakers are making their presence felt, challenging the long-standing dominance of Japanese companies. Thailand is southeast Asia's largest car producer and exporter, and its second-largest sales market after Indonesia. Japanese automakers have traditionally been dominant in the region. With a focus on electric vehicles, Chinese investments worth $1.44 billion since 2020 have created a new battleground in southeast Asia's largest automaking hub.

Elephant Muthu Raja that is at the centre of a Sri Lanka-Thailand diplomatic row is to be translocated back to his home country Thailand. Raja had been gifted to Sri Lanka in 2001 to carry Buddhist relics at processions. 22 years on though, he suffers from a range of health issues arising out of alleged negligence and even maltreatment. The issue takes centre stage amid reports of lack of care of pachyderms and other animals in Sri Lanka. Echoes of the Nur Jehan case in Pakistan earlier this year ring out too.

Thailand's prime ministerial frontrunner Pita Limjareonrat will be investigated over whether he was qualified to run in last month's election, a top official said on Monday, in another setback as he battles to win backing for his premiership.

Pita, the 42-year-old leader of the progressive Move Forward party whose election victory stunned&nbsp;Thailand's military-backed establishment, has faced multiple complaints from rivals, three of which the poll body has dismissed for late submission, while four others against the party have been thrown out.

But Pita is by no means in the clear, with the commission looking into whether he was knowingly unfit to register as a parliamentary candidate because of his ownership of shares in a media firm, which is prohibited under election rules.

Pita has downplayed the issue, arguing the shares in the firm, ITV, have since been transferred and the company was not an active media organisation. He faces disqualification, up to 10 years in jail and 20 years banned from politics if found in violation.

"There is sufficient information to suspect that the candidate is unfit or prohibited from seeking public office, according to electoral regulations, to further investigate Pita," election commission chairman Ittiporn Boonprakong told Reuters in a text message.

The opposition Move Forward and Pheu Thai parties thumped conservative opponents allied with the military in a resounding rejection of nearly nine years of government led or backed by the army after its 2014 coup.

They have formed an alliance with six smaller parties, but Pita's bid to be premier and form the government is expected to face resistance in a conservative-leaning Senate that was appointed under the military. A bicameral vote on a prime minister is expected by August, with weeks of uncertainty ahead.

Move Forward's anti-establishment agenda clashes with the interests of a royalist military and old-money business elite that has influenced politics for decades in Southeast Asia's second biggest economy.

The party won huge support among the youth and the capital Bangkok with a platform of institutional change, including reducing the army's political role, undoing monopolies and reviewing a controversial law against insulting the monarchy.

Asked about challenges against Move Forward, its secretary-general Chaitawat Tulathon on Monday said the voice of the people will be protected.

"The election commission may take action against Pita in the future," he told a press conference.

"The party is confident that the allegations do not have sufficient evidence."

Canadian national&nbsp;Matthew&nbsp;Dupre&nbsp;has been successfully extradited to Thailand in connection with the killing last year of a criminal gang member, Thai authorities said on Monday, after the former soldier arrived in Bangkok on a special air force flight.

Dupre, 38, is wanted for the alleged murder of suspected criminal Jimi Sandhu, who was shot dead in Phuket in February 2022, central investigation bureau commissioner Jirabhop Bhuridej told a news conference.
