Young Indians are driving the increased Indian tourist inflows to Thailand with Airbnb reporting a more than 60 per cent year-on-year increase in bookings by Indian guests and tourists to Thailand between 2022 and 2023. This surge in interest, particularly notable during the recent Holi and Easter long weekends, saw searches for Thai stays by Indian travelers increasing by over 200 percent during these periods.

The surge in travel interest is predominantly driven by India's younger demographic. Gen Z and Millennials, who constitute the largest share of the Indian population, accounted for 80 percent of Airbnb bookings to Thailand in 2023.

According to data from Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports, India ranks as the fifth largest inbound market for Thailand. The recent boost in travel can be attributed to several factors, including the Thai government’s visa-free policy for Indian citizens, which has been extended until November 11, 2024, and the availability of numerous non-stop daily flights. This policy has significantly lowered barriers to travel, making Thailand an even more attractive destination for Indian tourists.

The most popular destinations for Indian travelers on Airbnb include a mix of vibrant cities and beach locales. Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi, and Koh Samui emerged as the top five destinations. The type of travelers and their preferences indicate a broad spectrum of travel interests. Duo and solo travelers made up the largest segment, while small groups (3-5 people) and medium-sized groups (5+ people) were the fastest growing, with increases of approximately 67 per cent and 68 per cent year-on-year, respectively, in 2023.

Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s General Manager for Southeast Asia, India, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, commented on the trend, stating, “Travelers from India on Airbnb continue to show their love for Thailand with a growing interest in exploring destinations across the country. We see Indian guests not only visiting top destinations but also exploring lesser-known areas, thereby supporting a more inclusive tourism in Thailand that spreads economic opportunities to more people in more places.”

Indians are now also driving the global tourism market as many countries have announced visa free travel for Indian tourists, particularly in Asia.

Thai courts on Monday (May 27) issued a four-year jail sentence to musician Chaiamorn Kaewwiboonpanto for allegedly insulting the monarchy. These convictions are among the latest under Thailand's stringent lese-majeste laws, which are considered some of the strictest in the world. Thailand’s lese-majeste law, designed to protect the monarchy from criticism, carries penalties of up to 15 years in prison for each offence.

The musician received the prison sentence for burning a portrait of King Maha Vajiralongkorn. He was convicted of arson, lese-majeste, and computer crimes, as reported by Reuters. Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR), a legal aid group, indicated that Chaiamorn was seeking bail and planning to appeal the decision.

Chaiamorn denied the charges of insulting the monarchy. The courts have not yet released official statements regarding the sentence. The royal palace typically refrains from commenting on lese-majeste cases.

Widespread use of Lese-Majeste law

Since 2020, over 272 people have been charged under the lese-majeste law, with 17 held in pre-trial detention, according to TLHR.

In one notable case, a 65-year-old woman received a 43-year sentence in 2021 for social media posts critical of the monarchy.

Another individual, jailed for 28 years in 2023, received an additional 22 years in January after appealing a similar verdict and is now appealing to the Supreme Court.

Chaiamorn admitted to burning the king’s portrait in 2021 as a defiant act and to express frustration over the detention of fellow activists on lese-majeste charges. These latest court rulings come just two weeks after the death of activist Netiporn "Bung" Sanesangkhom, who died in pre-trial detention while facing royal insult charges. She had been on a partial hunger strike, according to TLHR.

A British tourist in Thailand, reportedly disgruntled, is facing legal trouble for alleged online retaliation. 21-year-old Alexander was arrested after supposedly posting fake negative reviews about a Phuket restaurant, as reported by The Metro.

The dispute arose when Alexander, as per accounts, was denied entry to the restaurant for not being a customer while attempting to use it as a shortcut home. Seeking revenge, Alexander allegedly enlisted friends to flood the restaurant with one-star reviews, causing its rating to drop from 4.8 to 3.1 stars, according to the news outlet.

The restaurant owner, understandably upset by the sudden rush of negative comments and its potential impact on business, filed a complaint. Subsequently, Alexander was arrested by the Central Investigation Bureau at his new Bangkok residence, based on an arrest warrant. The warrant accuses him of a crime termed "entering false computer data likely to cause damage to the general public."

He got arrested for writing a negative review on TripAdvisor, saying a hotel was like "modern-day slavery." Although he got released after saying sorry, it's a lesson for anyone posting online reviews while visiting Thailand. Even if it seems harmless, it can get you in serious trouble because in Thailand, saying bad things about someone can land you in jail for up to two years.

In recent weeks, Thailand has been dealing with sweltering conditions as temperatures soar across the region. Experts attribute this trend to climate change, which is causing heatwaves to become more frequent, prolonged, and intense.

In Nakhon Sawan province, located in central Thailand, the absence of rain for months has led villagers in Phayuha Khiri District to resort to a unique ritual to break the drought.

Traditionally known as "Hae Nang Meaw," or the parading of a female cat, villagers have opted to parade Japanese manga cat Doraemon or HelloKitty dolls instead.

Thai villagers stage 'Doraemon parade' to appease rain gods in sweltering heat: WATCH

Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts gathered on the runway of Bangkok's main airport on Saturday (April 27), reaching toward the reddening sky as they laid out their mats.

Despite the early morning flights rumbling overhead, participants engaged in their yoga practice, including the downward dog pose. This unique event took place on the airport's third runway, which is still under construction.

Alongside the workout, participants were provided with beverages such as coconut, iced tea, and water to enhance their routine. Around 500 yoga practitioners and camera-ready influencers began arriving at 5:00 am, navigating in the darkness to find their designated spots on the runway.

As the sun came up, yoga instructors led the group through two sessions with high spirits, despite the pollution, industrial surroundings, and occasional airplane noise.

"Today is going to be very special," an instructor blared, before urging participants to "put your coconut in the air!"

"Feel like a beautiful bird," she said, as a plane rumbled along the concrete and lifted into the air behind the participants.

Although many attendees were influencers, possibly more concerned with capturing the perfect shot than executing the perfect lunge, most appeared to be there for a good time.

"This was something fun, this was a nice event," said lawyer Rugeradh Tungsupakul, attending with a friend.

"Right now, because of our jobs, we are too busy to go to a yoga studio," she told AFP.

Despite Rugeradh's concerns about pollution, a common problem in the smoggy city of Bangkok, which often ranks among the world's most polluted cities, she mentioned that they had checked the air quality before heading to the event.

Also read | Explained! Yoga, an ancient Indian practice, for stress relief and intense relaxation "Today is going to be very special," an instructor blared, before urging participants to "put your coconut in the air!" "Feel like a beautiful bird," she said, as a plane rumbled along the concrete and lifted into the air behind the participants. Thailand's parliament overwhelmingly approved a marriage equality bill on Wednesday, a landmark step that moves one of Asia’s most liberal countries closer to becoming its third territory to legalise same-sex unions.

Thailand: Lawmakers approve a bill to legalise same-sex marriage

Thailand's lower house of parliament on Wednesday (Mar 27) approved a bill granting legal recognition to same-sex marriages.

The bill still requires endorsement from the upper house Senate and royal approval to become law.

Anticipation is high that this will occur by end of 2024, positioning Thailand as the sole Southeast Asian nation to officially acknowledge same-sex partnerships.

This move will solidify Thailand's status as a comparatively safe space for LGBTQ+ couples within a region, where such acceptance remains scarce.

"This is the beginning of equality. It's not a universal cure to every problem but it's the first step towards equality," Danuphorn Punnakanta, an MP and chairman of the lower house's committee on marriage equality, told parliament while presenting a draft of the bill.

"This law wants to return these rights to this group of people, not grant them the rights," he added.

The newly passed law, supported by 400 out of 415 lawmakers present, redefines marriage as a union between two individuals rather than specifically between a man and a woman.

It ensures that LGBTQ+ couples have equal rights to access marital tax benefits, inherit property, and provide medical consent for incapacitated partners.

Thailand already boasts legislation prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation, positioning it as one of Asia's most LGBTQ+ inclusive nations.

However, achieving marriage equality has been a prolonged struggle, despite widespread public backing.

Previous attempts to legalise same-sex marriage faltered, despite strong public support. A government survey conducted late last year revealed that 96.6 per cent of respondents favoured the bill.

Before last year's election, multiple political parties pledged to recognise same-sex unions in Thailand. Prime Minister Sretta Thavisin has vocally supported this cause since taking office in September 2023.

In December, the lower house of parliament passed four bills to legalise same-sex marriage, including one from Thavisin's administration and three from opposition parties.

Despite the visibility of transgender communities, proposals allowing gender identity changes have been rejected.

How are other Southeast Asian countries faring?

Thailand's stance on LGBTQ+ rights distinguishes it in Southeast Asia, where some countries criminalise same-sex relationships.

In Asia, Taiwan legalised same-sex marriage in 2019, while Nepal registered its first same-sex union in November 2023.

Conversely, India's Supreme Court ruled against it in October 2023. In Japan, efforts for marriage equality face opposition from traditional factions.

Singapore abolished a colonial-era ban on gay sex in 2022 but amended its constitution to preserve marriage's heterosexual definition.
